Your dog’s comfort isn’t a “nice to have” and it definitely isn’t a luxury. It’s the baseline for healthy skin, easy movement, and a calmer, happier life and it starts with grooming choices that match real life, not just a cute look.

I’m in the studio with Shannon and Tanya, professional groomers at Hound Therapy, with producer and co-host Sophia Yvette guiding the conversation. We unpack what it really means when we say “your dog’s comfort is a lifestyle choice,” and why a long, fluffy coat can be unfair if no one is washing, brushing, and maintaining it. Our motto is humanity over vanity, and we use it to talk honestly about matting, coat condition, paw pads, and the simple truth that dogs do not care about being Instagram ready if they’re uncomfortable.

We also get practical about dog grooming between appointments, especially in summer. Swimming, lake days, hiking, travel, boarding, and busy schedules can quietly create knots, odor, and irritation. Shannon and Tanya explain when a shorter “pool cut” makes sense, how sweaters in winter change coat needs, and what early warning signs to watch for before a small issue becomes a vet visit: smell, ear gunk, the comb not gliding, and nails clicking on the floor. We share easy at-home maintenance tips like ear checks, nail trims, basic bathing and brushing, and when to ask your groomer or vet for help with safe products and technique.

If you care about dog comfort, coat maintenance, and preventing matting and ear infections, this one is packed with actionable grooming tips for pet owners. Subscribe for more, share this with a fellow dog parent, and leave a review with the one grooming habit you’re going to improve next.

Let's get started.

Comfort Is A Lifestyle Choice

SPEAKER_00

Comfort isn't a luxury for dogs. It's a lifestyle. Today we're breaking down how grooming habits, home routines, and small daily choices can transform a dog's overall well-being. Welcome back, everyone. I'm Sophia Yvette, co-host and producer, back in the studio with Shannon and Tanya, professional groomers at Hound Therapy. Hi, ladies, let's jump into this one today. Now, Shannon and Tanya, open this one up for

Cute Coats Versus Real Comfort

SPEAKER_00

us. What does the phrase your dog's comfort is a lifestyle choice mean in the grooming world?

SPEAKER_02

So for me, I'm and I'm gonna be really blunt, right? It's just it's whatever. If you're I understand that everybody wants their dog to look cute, and and who doesn't, right? Everybody loves this long, fluffy, flowy coat. But if you're not wearing your own, you know, huge, hairy, furry coats that you're not washing, maintaining, or taking care of because you're out, you know, living life, then that's not fair to make your dog wearing it. Um, long hair uh or short hair, it doesn't really matter. Nails have to be done, ears have to be cleaned, you know, your their skin has to be washed. You've got to maintain these things. So it's the it's it's really about the comfort for the dog. It it even if it's just a bath dog, it could be as simple as you know, just a quick all-over rinse. Uh, we're gonna, you know, check the ears, do the uh do the nails, do the pads so that, you know, uh, or maybe even leave the hair on the pad. Some people like to leave that so that if the ground gets hot, um, that you know, it's not sticking directly onto the pavement. So there's a lot of reasons that your dog could be uncomfortable. Um, the matting, the coat condition, those are just part of it. There's so many other things.

SPEAKER_01

And your dog doesn't care if they look Instagram ready, if their armpits are matted.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they they do not. They don't care. So let's shave them.

SPEAKER_00

Speaking of lifestyle habits, what is the biggest lifestyle habit that impacts a dog's comfort between grooming appointments?

Summer Habits That Change Grooming

SPEAKER_02

Swimming. Right now, this is summertime. Summer is swimming. It's getting hot, summer is swimming. Uh dogs are about ready to go to the pool, they're about ready to go to the lake. Um, we've got so many extra fun things happening. School is leading.

SPEAKER_01

We have vacations are starting.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's it's you know, it's what are we? We have dogs going to the to be boarded, we have dogs going to stay at your mother-in-law's or sister's house. We have all of these things that are planned uh for this time of year. And your dog is gonna get put on the back burner. So let's make sure that we've got a comfortable coat. But that for sure, I would say right now it's it's swimming, hiking, it's outside, outdoors. Um, in the wintertime, it's gonna be the exact opposite. It's gonna be sweaters because it's cold. Um, we don't want your dog to be in a sweater unless they have short hair or if we've given them a haircut that is designed for a sweater. And there is such a thing. We can make sure that we can groom your dog if they're gonna be in outfits that they can be comfortable in and confident and still look cute without everybody thinking that your dog has got a short short coat or that you had him shaved, you know, in December. So I would say right now it's travel, it's outdoor, it's boarding, it's swimming, it's the lake, it's hiking, it's all of these things that we do this time of year that you know, we including our animals, which I think is great for this time of year. Um, but it it it's it's a lot to keep up with on a longer haired dog and and just as much so on a short-haired dog.

SPEAKER_01

Um I will tell you, my Vishla is equally as hard to keep up with. Yeah. Especially with two toddlers.

Early Warning Signs Owners Miss

SPEAKER_00

So, ladies, how can owners recognize the early signs of discomfort before it becomes a bigger issue?

SPEAKER_02

A lot of times it's smell. Um, sometimes it's feel. Reach down and touch your dog, right? I mean, if it uh it mats are hard to find for just the average person. So sometimes they're missed. Uh, go ahead and take your brush and your comb. Uh, you know, don't forget we've got to do a regular maintenance, you know, grooming. You you missed it because of your vacation, you missed your appointment because uh, you know, so-and-so came over, we have a graduation coming in, I've got to pick people up at the airport, you know, whatever it is. Um, don't forget we have to maintain our daily basic routine of bathing, brushing, and at least checking our coat with our combs and our brushes um on the regular. So if we're not, you know, that that's gonna, that's a telltale if your comb or your brush isn't going through simply or as good as it is it has been in the past, that that's the beginning of some discomfort for your dogs. And dogs do suffer in silence. So they're not gonna tell you. Um, the other big thing for me is smell. Um, those teeth will smell bad. Uh, the ears, especially from my diver visla, my dog, um she will, when I, you know, get up in the morning and she comes up, first thing is she puts her head and she's scratching her ears on me because it's you know, it's allergy season. And I take a cotton ball and I wipe out her ears at least three or four times a week, and she loves it. She just, you know, she groans and moans. She does. Um, but she's coming up to me to do that. And I always get big black gooey stuff out of there. And if I don't, then I don't need to keep doing it. But I always check because, you know, that's kind of our routine. Nails. If you hear the click, click, click, clack, clack, clack, you know, stilettos on your floors. Yeah. Got it. We gotta get the nails trimmed down. They can get caught in all kinds of things. Um, it can help them, you know, it it they it can put their posture off. Uh, you they could slip uh, you know, if they're out running in a terrain that they're not used to. Um there's a lot of things that you can do visually uh and also you know, just by smelling. If those ears are dirty, you can smell if the skin smells dirty. If you walk into your house and your house smells like it smells like dog in here. They don't say you walk all the dog beds and bathe your dogs. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Now, what about coat

At Home Coat Care And Smart Cuts

SPEAKER_00

maintenance? Speaking of smell, is there, you know, an at-home time or how frequent would you recommend that someone cares for their dog's coat at home before coming into the salon?

SPEAKER_02

This is gonna depend, I think, on your breed coat, and your last haircut. So if you will use your best judgment and um again, our basic rule humanity over vanity, if you look at your dog and say, I love how you look fluffy, but I know you're gonna be in the pool as soon as I leave. So if you know that, let's give them a pool cut, right? Let's give them, um, hey, my dog is going to stay with grandma who is definitely not gonna brush you. So let's give them that shorter cut, which gives you longer to enjoy your summer activities and allows your dog to stay comfortable on a longer basis. Now, those dogs that are swimming uh that have hair uh that are in a shorter cut, they're gonna be kind of around your same length that your dogs are swimming with your, you know, your labs and your goldens and and your your your little terrier mixes, all of those dogs, you can bathe them in between if they have short white hair. If they're in and out of a lake or uh a pool, especially, uh the the chances of them being really dirty aren't gonna be high. So they don't need to maybe be bathed as often, but they do need to come somewhere, whether it's not here or Tibet, um, or by you, um, maintain their nails and their ears because those are gonna continue to get gooey. And the more moisture and water that's in there, it's going to cause um a higher content of yeast, which could lead to uh either an ear infection or for sure a smell um almost always uh an undesirable problem.

SPEAKER_01

So um and a little maintenance now prevents a big problem later that could end up in a vet visit.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Nobody wants to pay.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_01

Nobody likes to vet.

SPEAKER_02

So if you can't do if you can't clean out the ears yourself, you're not sure about your solutions, you know, either ask us, ask your vet what you can do for home. Um, same thing with the nails. If you're not feeling comfortable trimming them yourself, then bring them to us and and we'll be more than happy to do it for you. You know, I mean, uh cleaning up in front of their eyes. They get those little eye books, you know, kind of mats of their face because they have the little weepy eyes. You know, we can do all of that stuff, keeping their butts clean, their feet clean, their face clean, inside their ears, their nails, just your basics.
