Your dog’s comfort can change fast, and it usually starts with something small you almost missed. We sit down with Shannon and Tanya from Hound Therapy, with Sophia Yvette back in the studio, to unpack the tiny habits that quietly shape your dog’s day. Think nails that “don’t feel sharp” but still throw off movement, coats that seem fine until a little moisture turns tangles into mats, and the subtle smells and behaviors that signal irritation early. Our motto holds up here: humanity over vanity.

We get practical about dog grooming essentials that pet owners can actually keep up with. You’ll hear why nail trimming supports healthy joints and confident traction, how a simple brushing schedule improves airflow to the skin and helps you spot lumps or cuts, and why ear cleaning matters even when your dog looks clean. We also share low-stress dental care options like sprays and water additives that make a real difference in dog breath and oral health without turning your night into a struggle.

Then we zoom out to comfort beyond grooming: training basics that help dogs handle real-world situations safely, plus mental stimulation that can be as important as exercise. Sniffing, puzzle toys, frozen treats, and creative enrichment can reduce stress and boost confidence, especially during hot months when routines change. We also touch on summer realities like fleas, ticks, and weight shifts, and how quick daily check-ins can catch problems before they escalate.

If you found this helpful, subscribe, share this with a dog parent who needs a simpler routine, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show. What tiny habit are you going to start this week?

Welcome And The Big Idea

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to Tale Talk Grooming Chronicles with Health Therapy, the podcast where we talk all things pet grooming, daycare, academy, and more. Hosted by Shannon and Tanya of Health Therapy, serving pet owners across North Texas. We're here to share expert tips, hilarious pet stories, and the inside scoop on keeping your furry friends happy and healthy. Our motto, humanity over vanity. And don't worry, we don't fight. Let's get started.

SPEAKER_01

Tiny habits, tiny tools, tiny adjustments. They can completely transform a dog's comfort. Today we're exploring the small things owners overlook that make a big difference in your dog's daily life. Welcome back, everyone. I'm Sophia Yvette, co-host and producer, back in the studio with Shannon and Tanya, professional groomers at Hound Therapy. Hi, ladies. It is wonderful to be back on with you both today. Now let's dive into this topic. How can small things impact your dog's comfort and overall quality of life?

SPEAKER_02

Well, let's say the, I mean, it's the little things, right? All of those little things just add up, um, as they do in our regular life. Um, you know, owners tend to focus on the big things, you know, the food, the exercise, the vet visits, you know, are we current on our shots? Um, but it's often the very small everyday details that make the biggest difference on how your dog feels.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And comfort isn't one just one big decision, it's hundreds

Nail Length And Pain Signals

SPEAKER_02

of little ones. So let's start with the most obvious for me and the most easiest, I think, to keep up with, which is nails. Nails matter more than you think. Uh, long nails that click on the floor, uh, they change how the dogs walk. Uh, it it's an easy thing that you can visually see and hear. Um, over time, you know, it can affect if if you if you go long distance. In fact, we had somebody today come in that had a dog that was matted. She knew it was matted, you know, she made no apologies, um, you know, just kind of got out of her way. And uh I said, well, the nails are very, very long. She said they don't feel sharp. Well, they can curve back in underneath under those pads. And just because they don't feel sharp, that you know doesn't mean they're not long. And if it if it's a fast growing nail, that quick grows with the nail. So, you know, it's it's it can affect a lot of things. Um it can it can cause infections, it can rip at the nail bed, it can get caught, uh, especially when they're running, uh, you know, uh carpet or rugs, yep, all of that stuff. So um put put extra strains on your joints, uh that just that one little thing alone, um, it can it can increase slipping on on on the hardwood floors, which if you've got an older dog or a dog that's got some you know dysplasia or some hips or knee issues, um, I don't know if you've ever, you know, almost slipped and caught yourself, but it's painful.

SPEAKER_03

And I mean, I've seen dogs that come in with like big long nails and for a nail trim, and you can visibly see them more comfortable after.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

Brushing To Prevent Mats And Heat

SPEAKER_02

Um, I think another really easy thing is just you know, brush a little bit more, especially um, you know, during the summertime. They're shedding, you've got a lot of hair in your house, so it's just gonna help you pick up. But it's another really easy thing. Regular brushing, set yourself on a schedule. Yeah. Um, this prevents, you know, tangles and knots from from happening later, especially if they're gonna be getting wet in that dog park scenario or in your pool or, you know, in in any kind of a a situation where that's gonna create that mat to be worse. Uh, it improves the airflow to the skin, which will help keep them cooler in hotter heats. Um, it distributes the natural oils on the dog. Uh, and it helps you as the owner to find lumps, bumps, cuts that may or may not be there. It's gonna help you know your dog's anatomy a little bit better.

SPEAKER_03

So um, and five minutes of brushing can take away hours of brushing at the groomers.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, and save tons of discomfort for all of us.

SPEAKER_03

And fun fact, if you have a really sheddy dog, you can take all that hair and throw it outside. The birds will use it.

SPEAKER_02

They will and yes, and you can put it in your garden. We have people that come in and ask for dog hair for the bar for gardens, uh, save it and put it away. Believe it or not, it does keep all the rodents out of your vegetable gardens and things. Kind of a weird thing for hair, but you know. But you can use it. Yeah, we can't sell it. If I could, we would. Um, is

Ears And Teeth Made Simple

SPEAKER_02

your dog telling you something? You know, it's small dog behaviors. I I think we've we we've covered this quite a bit. So, you know, just watch for, you know, irritations, constant licking. Um, you know, this time of year, you can get some hot spots. Uh, that licking can create that to be worse. Um, you've got a lot of ants popping up. It's raining and then it's dry. So then get into ant hills. You've got mosquito bites. Um, you know, you just you tend to be outside a little bit more doing things you haven't done. Um, so just kind of watch and see if your dog is is trying to tell you something. Uh, I think another really easy thing that is a great preventative is ear cleaning. It's not hard to clean your dog's ears. Um, you know, you can use a try paper towel, a cotton ball, you can use a little bit of rubbing alcohol, you can buy any kind of uh, you know, ear cleaner that's I I I like an alcohol-based if your dog is in water just to dry that up. But it it makes your dog smell good, it makes them look good. You know, they usually like their ears rubbed and tugged on, especially if they've got those big long, fluffy, soft ears. Um, so you know, just wipe your dog's ear out. It's it's gonna save you from moisture buildup, it's gonna save you from oil from from odor, from ear infections, uh, any kind of irritation that you know you're gonna get later. Um, and and most breeds, I I would say benefit from ear cleaning anyway. But that's especially this time of year, you can you can you can really smell that. Um teeth, I love the teeth spray. It's another really easy little thing. There's a, you know, that's that's care for your your your dog's mouth. You don't necessarily have to be brushing it with a toothbrush and toothpaste, but you can take the dental sprays and they're awesome. You can just spray it right in their mouth.

SPEAKER_03

I use a water additive. I put it in their food every day or their water every day. And it kind of just helps scrape that puck off.

SPEAKER_02

Especially while they're panting. Like with panting in your in front of your face, you know. Uh, and at least it's not a bad smell. Yeah.

Training And Brain Work For Calm

SPEAKER_02

Um, comfort isn't just physical, you know, it's it's it's it's basic just training lessons, making sure that your dog listens and behaves so they can go more places. Um we literally went to an adoption place uh yesterday. Tanya's looking for a puppy, and somebody told me that worked there to put my dog in the car and then come back in and look at dogs. I'm like, I don't I don't feel comfortable with that. So, you know, uh, you know, just be aware that a lot of people don't think. Uh so you need to be that person. Is that physically gonna be comfortable? Like, would you sit in the car and wait for me for me to go get a dog? Uh probably not.

SPEAKER_03

Uh and nobody's mental stimulation helps more than anything. It's it matters almost just as much as exercise.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So those puzzle toys, the sniffle mats, frozen treats, ice cubes, stick them in, you know, you know, make it make it harder for your dog to get, you know, those bones when you're putting them in the crate when you leave. Give them give them those those shoe toys that you know you can stick the food inside that they can't get it out of, or you know, really make them work for it. Uh buying different shapes of toys, that kind of thing, uh, will will kind of entice them to chew, which will also help them with their teeth.

SPEAKER_03

And so I think I read somewhere that um 15 minutes of sniffing is equivalent to 30 minutes of physical exercise. Oh.

Summer Checks Fleas Ticks Weight

SPEAKER_03

Didn't know that. Brandon things, Tanya on this.

SPEAKER_02

Let's catch up with let's catch up with the lumps and bumps. Um, you know, summertime again, we've got fleas and ticks. So uh, you know, you want to be checking your dog frequently um for grooming appointments if you can't get in as often. Uh make sure that you're on your preventatives and your other things if you're gonna be outside more often. But uh, you know, the the broken nails, you know, we we've covered weight changes. If your dog is excessively losing weight. Or gaining weight, then, you know, either not getting enough exercise or something could be wrong. You know, the heat makes dogs do really different things. Tiny adjustments can often improve big mob mobility and confidence. And those are are are big things for for weight for sure. Yeah. Uh, and that brain stimulus, that that brain stimulate will help uh really well too. I've even made little um kind of uh hula hoops and you know, the dog pools. I've done little outdoor um agility things for my dog, uh, which is it, she loves it gets her exercise, it gets her out. I mean, I'm also the person that got my dog a whole other puppy. So, you know, she could have a friend because she was getting old and lazy. So now she has a friend uh that has a lot of energy that she feels the need to keep up with. So I don't recommend everybody go out and get a new dog to keep your dog company, but uh it is a if if you're thinking about getting a new dog, you know, around the five to seven year mark is often a good time if your dog is well trained. It can help train your other dog. Um we're in the in the mode of looking at puppies right now for Tanya's dog who lost her his dog. So, you know, he just needs and he's gained how much 10 pounds.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Since the loss of his daughter.

SPEAKER_03

It's and he's a very active dog. I think he's just lonely and he eats more.

SPEAKER_02

So um it's kind it's kind of sad. But a puppy does, and when he meets my dog, so he comes out, you get that stimulation. They're learning how to retalk to another dog and they're going out. Doggy daycare is a great place for an alternative um, you know, place for your dog to get that exercise uh in a cool environment where they get that stimulation. So that's another really good, even if it's just an hour or, you know, two, it doesn't have to be an all-day event. Um small things that we've noticed during grooming uh here that end up making huge difference for us, I would say, is the dog's comfort and health. Uh is that people who take the time to do the little things for us versus the people who see the big matting solution, the, the, the obvious. Um, as I mentioned today, we this lady when I spoke to her about the dog nails, she almost cried in the lobby because she thought that, you know, we were her dog was in pain because we had to go so far back on our dog and I uh the dog's nails. And I explained to her that the nails are still really long, but we took more than half off. They were starting to grow back into the pad. And she was just so upset with herself because she didn't notice it. She didn't notice it because she didn't look. She was going by feel only. So you need to use all of your senses, your smell. Does it smell bad? Does it, you know, these little things that are subtle changes

Quick Home Checklist And Wrap

SPEAKER_02

make a big, big difference. Um, I think.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

So to recap, I would say really quick, quick brush on their coat. And check their feet, check their paws, check for new lumps and bumps, uh, peek inside those ears, uh, refresh that water bowl frequently, and maybe put some of that dental spray or put it in the water. Yeah. Um, give them a little bit of one-on-one attention. Those few minutes can improve the comfort, strengthen your bond, uh, and it can even catch health concerns really early. Those are all things that we do in here on the daily. Um, if you're not able to do that every day with your dog, you know, at least kind of set up a checklist for whoever is.

SPEAKER_01

Well, wonderful insights as always. Thank you both, and we will see everyone back here next time.
