Supercharging Your Detox After Cryotherapy: Why Lymphatic Support Matters

Catina Wilson Episode 18

The Detox Connection: Why Lymphatic Support Is Key For Post-cryo & Overall Wellness

Ever wondered what happens to those frozen fat cells after cryotherapy? The answer lies in your lymphatic system—your body's internal sewage network that filters waste, toxins, and pathogens. Without proper support, this critical system can become sluggish, compromising your wellness results and leaving you feeling bloated, fatigued, and foggy.

Licensed nutritionist Catina Wilson breaks down the science of lymphatic health in practical terms anyone can understand. Unlike your circulatory system with its powerful heart pump, your lymphatic system relies entirely on muscle movement and proper hydration to function. When you undergo treatments like cryotherapy that intentionally damage fat cells, your lymphatic system becomes responsible for flushing those damaged cells out of your body—a process that can take days or weeks depending on how efficiently your system operates.

The good news? Supporting this crucial detoxification pathway doesn't require complicated protocols or expensive supplements. The cornerstone is proper hydration—drinking at least half your body weight in ounces of water daily. Combine this with regular movement (even something as simple as a 15-minute session on a vibration plate) and plenty of water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, and citrus fruits. These straightforward approaches make lymphatic support accessible to everyone, regardless of where you are on your wellness journey.

Cryotherapy may freeze fat, but what happens next? Discover how lymphatic support supercharges detox and recovery for lasting wellness. Welcome back everyone. I am Millie M, co-host and producer. Back in the studio with licensed nutritionist and clinic owner, katina Wilson. Katina, how are you? I'm great. How are you today Doing well? I'm so excited to dive into this one. Your insights on detox and lymphatic health always leave me rethinking my self-care routine. Can you explain the detox connection and why lymphatic support is key for post-cryo and overall wellness?

Speaker 3:

Yes, thanks for having me. So yeah, let's just jump right in. The lymphatic system is really our body's unsung hero. It's often called the body's sewage system or the drainage system. So, unlike our circulatory system, which has the heart, the lymphatic system relies on muscle contractions and movement to circulate fluid or lymph throughout the body, and it's a vital part of our immune system, filtering waste products, toxins and even pathogens. So, for instance, we've talked about this before specifically, it's like cryotherapy. Cryotherapy, you know, we're freezing the fat, we're damaging those cells. Well, those cells do what they enter into the lymphatic system, and so it's important to have a properly functioning lymphatic system, because, since we intentionally damage those cells, we now want to get them to flush out of the system, and so that's why, you know, when doing a service like cryotherapy, having a great functioning lymphatic system is critically important.

Speaker 2:

So it's true that when you're like losing weight, you kind of tinkle it out. Is that what happens?

Speaker 3:

I mean ultimately. Yes, that's what we're trying to do, right, we're trying to get it to get to the place where you can eliminate it For sure Interestingly enough, you use the term tinkle.

Speaker 3:

Having a healthy lymphatic system is also being very hydrated. So one of the things that we chat about with our with our clients, is before you come into you know your visit for a cryo session, drink at least one liter of water. Now, in general, you know when we're talking about hydration and the importance of hydration in general. Each and every day, we should be at least drinking at least half of our body weight in ounces of water, right, and so hydration is probably the most critical part of having a properly functioning lymphatic system.

Speaker 2:

Absolutely, and I was just talking to a friend of mine about kind of tackling it from two different standpoints actually drinking water and then eating very water-rich foods, fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, tomatoes, cucumbers, things like that, to get those All the things. What are some signs that someone's lymphatic system might be sluggish or overwhelmed?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, great question. You know, cryotherapy aside, you know it's important to just have a healthy lymphatic system anyway and again, as I said earlier, it helps with our immune system. So how will you know? You're probably retaining water, right, Because you know, as we talked a few minutes ago about the importance of hydration, if your body can't release those fluids, you're holding it in, and so you tend to see it in a puffy face or puffy hands, puffy feet, puffy ankles. Right, that's generally like one of the Right butting those pants up.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so bloating for sure, right? So water retention, bloating for sure. And even somebody who is getting colds all the time or they can't kick an illness, an illness that maybe should have only lasted like a day or two, it's dragging on, and a lot of it has to do with the fact that you know your lymphatic system is moving very, very slow. Brain fog is a contributing factor to having an unhealthy lymphatic system and even just feeling tired, right, Because, again, your body is working extra hard to push out the fluids, to push out the toxins, and so you just don't feel your best self when you don't have a high functioning lymphatic system.

Speaker 2:

What about the nodes being swollen? Are they tender and hurt when that happens to you?

Speaker 3:

If that's happening, chances are you might have an infection, right. So that's something completely different. But that is a part of the immune system, right, that is certainly a part of it. But when your nodes, a lot of times when you go to the doctor and you're saying you don't feel very well, and they start feeling those nodes and they're trying to see if there's pain there, that tends to suggest that there's some sort of infection in the body.

Speaker 2:

Absolutely. Are there specific foods or supplements or habits that help stimulate lymphatic flow? I know you talked about staying hydrated, but there are specific foods and supplements that someone can take to keep their lymphatic system flowing properly.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, the best things that we tell our clinic patients to do, first and foremost, water, right, that's the number one thing that you can do. The other thing and we talked about it at the top of this conversation is movement, right. So any movement you can do, and it doesn't have to be 30 minutes in the gym or an hour in the gym just doing things like walking. We like to use a vibration plate. We'll get people on a vibration plate and no, no, I'm just kidding. Exactly, exactly. They're super popular. But even getting on a vibration plate for 10 to 15 minutes, it kind of shakes and stimulates the system and you've gotten those micro contractions from your muscles because you're trying to balance yourself, to kind of hang on.

Speaker 3:

Even something as simple as like a vibration plate can help. But movement is probably the second best thing that you can do. And then certainly food. So you mentioned the citrus fruits, right. You talked about the water-based fruits. Water-based fruits and vegetables are certainly helpful, but movement, water and definitely the right foods will help improve you know, and get that lymphatic system high functioning.

Speaker 2:

So for someone just starting on their wellness journey, what is a simple first step to support a detox Water?

Speaker 3:

Water, water is the number one thing.

Speaker 2:

Answer to every question in the world.

Speaker 3:

Well, I mean, but think about it. I mean, most of our body is mostly made up of water. The earth is mostly made up of water, right, water is critically important and so, for that reason, pure water, right. Not water with your sweeteners and teas and sodas and things like that. Like pure water. Now, if you want to flavor the water, something like like with a lemon, you know, or an orange or a cucumber, right, that also help with the detox, right, but water is the number one thing that you can do. I mean, I can't emphasize the water enough.

Speaker 2:

Gotcha, gotcha. So any last thoughts that you wanted to share as far as the cryo and how it supports the lymphatic system in any detoxing tips that you have.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I mean the thing is is like, when it comes to body contouring, body shaping, when it comes to cryotherapy, it works, it really does work. But you have to do your part Right, because again we're getting in there, you know, we're damaging those fat cells and now they're entering into your body, and so now it's your job to get them out of your body as quickly as possible, and for some people, you know, it could take a couple of days, for others it could take a couple of weeks. But the key is having a high functioning lymphatic system. Water can't stress that enough. Drink water, definitely, stay hydrated. Movement, you know so any and all movement that you can do is helpful. And then eating clean as much as possible, so getting those fruits and those vegetables in your diet as well simple, not always easy.

Speaker 2:

We really appreciate you breaking down the science in such a practical way. It just sounds like drink water and mind your business. I know the listeners are walking away with real tools and we'll see you next time for more wellness wisdom. Thank you.
