EP 233 - When Does a Reverse Mortgage NOT Make Sense? 7 Situations Every Family Should Understand
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
One of the biggest misconceptions about reverse mortgages is that they’re the right solution for every homeowner.
They’re not.
In fact, one of the things that surprises people most when they learn I’m a reverse mortgage specialist is how often I actually tell families not to get one.
Why?
Because my job isn’t to recommend a reverse mortgage.
My job is to help families determine the best path forward.
In this episode of Sandwich Generation Solutions, I walk through seven situations where a reverse mortgage may not be the right fit and explain why understanding your family’s goals should always come before choosing a financial tool.
You’ll learn:
• Why planning to move soon may change the conversation
• When other financial resources may be a better solution
• Why aging in place isn’t always the safest option
• Why family alignment matters before making financial decisions
• Common misconceptions about reverse mortgages
• Why reverse mortgages aren’t quick fixes
• The most important question every family should ask before evaluating any financial strategy
One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is simple:
Don’t start by asking:
"Should we get a reverse mortgage?"
Start by asking:
"What are we trying to accomplish?"
Because once the family’s goals become clear, the available options become much easier to evaluate.
Sometimes that includes a reverse mortgage.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
Every family’s situation is unique, and every solution should be built around their care needs, housing goals, financial resources, and long-term plans.
