Dr. Gretchen Hoak is an Associate Professor of Journalism in the School of Media and Journalism at Kent State University, Kent, Ohio. Before entering academia, she spent 10 years as a local television news reporter and anchor, focusing mostly on police and crime stories. Her PhD and research agenda focuses on the psychological and emotional effects that covering traumatic news stories can have on journalists. She has 14 publications on journalism and trauma in various national and international academic journals including Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Practice, and Journalism & Mass Communication Educator.
