Today we have a guest in studio with us that is the queen of side hustles. Okay, so let's talk about some of your side hustles. So you are a flight attendant. What was the first side hustle that you remember doing?
SPEAKER_01The contagious Andrew Lab. We can cut that if we need to do that. You hit the nail on the head. Oh my god. You just had the and then all the memories go.
SPEAKER_03As soon as you hear it, you're like, meetup, that's the one. Flight attendants are often so underestimated. Over the years, we've shared jump seats with flight attendants that are nurses, doctors, lawyers, real estate agents, actors, musicians, and so much more. Today we have a guest in the studio with us that is the queen of side hustles. From fitness instructor to yoga teacher to our tour guide, painter, author, and most recently filmmaker. This guest has done just about everything you can imagine. And we are so excited to welcome Kara Adams to the studio. Hi, Kara. Welcome to Two Guys on a Plane.
SPEAKER_02Honored to be here.
SPEAKER_03We're so honored to have you.
Kara, normally when we start our podcast, we open with some sort of like rant about our week or flying or what's happened with us that day. Um, but when we have a guest, we like to ask you about a crazy story you've had with a passenger on your on one of your flights. Do you have any fun stories for us?
SPEAKER_01Of course. I'm all fun story.
SPEAKER_03Like, where do I begin? She was like in that list of jobs. You remember that I'm a flight attendant, right?
SPEAKER_02Right. So I guess like this week alone, it was kind of crazy. Um, just got back from Geneva yesterday, and right before that, I was in Dublin. So um had a birthday for one of the flight attendants yesterday, and she's just amazing. So she was been in the industry for 40 years. Really cool. So um, but yeah, crazy story. Let me think, let me think, let me think. Um, why is it when you're on the spot, you just like it's true.
SPEAKER_03And in this question, because there's so many of them, honestly. Yeah. And people ask this question all the time, and I'm always like, where do I begin?
SPEAKER_02Yes, exactly. So, um, well, you know the story, like delay to delay, delay, and then we're like finally get on the plane and we're going, going, going. Um, so we were flying somewhere internationally, like a couple weeks ago.
SPEAKER_04Can't tell you where or when or why.
SPEAKER_02So we're flying and I come out of crew rest. As soon as I like open the door, it was on a triple seven. I remember that part. So on a triple seven come out, like, we had an emergency. I was like, what? What do you mean, emergency? And they're like, and then they start spewing in the mouth. I'm like, what do you mean? What do you mean? And like there was a cat that got loose, apparently, cat flying through the aircraft. And like, um, there were the guy was under everybody's seat, chasing everybody, the flight attendant. In the meantime, not alone with just the cat, somebody passed out.
SPEAKER_04Oh, which always, yes, it always compounds. When it rains it forest, yes.
SPEAKER_02So, and then I think I can't remember the third thing that happened, but it comes in threes, apparently.
SPEAKER_03So there's a little bit of raining cats on your airplane, too.
SPEAKER_02What? I was like, oh my God. But I'm allergic to cats, so I'm really thankful I was not awake.
SPEAKER_03Somebody else was dealing with it.
SPEAKER_02Yes, somebody else is doing dealing with it. But I usually um deal with everything. As you know, I'm a purser, um, which is a lead flight attendant for international flights. So it was just funny coming out of that, like they just hit me, they're like boom, boom, boom. And I'm like, okay.
SPEAKER_03And you're like half awake too. You're like, my eyes are fuzzy. Yeah. I'm gonna go run some mouthwash and then I'll be back to handle this.
SPEAKER_02But the cat just had me laughing. And um but I think
the funniest thing I will say, like when I um about five years ago, I was on a plane and it was a 737, and we like we were going, like, I was in the one of the aft galleys. I was in the aft galley, and this flight attendant um we were talking, and then this customer came up and she says, Can you please move my seat? Can you please move me? And like she was like really intense, and I was like, um, we're on a little aircraft right now. She's like, Well, look at this. She hand she shows me her phone. On her phone, she's showing me a video that she was taking of the person sitting next to her cutting her nails. Oh no, her toenails, not just her fingernails. She, this woman was cutting her toenails.
SPEAKER_03People are disgusting.
SPEAKER_02They are, they're so gross. And I was like, I couldn't hold it. And I started laughing, and I could and then I covered my mail and I was like, I'm so sorry. And she's like, and then she starts laughing, the passenger, and she's like, No, it's she's like, Thank you.
SPEAKER_00I need just some comedy room.
SPEAKER_03Right, right. At least, at least she found some humor in the situation. Yeah, because sometimes it's like you have to laugh at some of these situations or you'll lose your mind. Yeah. Oh my god, I wish somebody would clip my finger toenails. I can't get down there anymore. But I was like, if you want to chill out of here, every time I try to do it. Ever heard of a nail salon though? Like, come on now.
SPEAKER_02And the worst is they start painting after they cut them. No, and then the smell is like you're on a tin can in the sky. Don't do that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, awful. That drives me crazy. That's funny. Those are some good stories. The wild stories that and people are always like, that didn't happen. It did. It a hundred percent did. Absolutely. People are wild. They are funny. Well,
before we get into the many, many side hustles that you've had over the years, let's start with your main gig. Being a flight attendant, being a purser. Where did you get your start with all of that? What brought you into aviation? What made you want to fly? How did that process look for you?
SPEAKER_02Well, I will say, I know a lot of people, they're like, Oh, I've always wanted to be one, or they're just inspired, and and and that's beautiful. And I love the fact that there's billions of people and we all have a different story. But my story is I literally was trying to escape. So I was going through like an eight-year custody battle, um, single mom, and my ex married a lawyer, and it was just so hard, and I didn't know what to do, and I literally wanted to escape reality. Um, I was very I was fighting depression because of all of that, and I just wanted honestly to get on a plane and leave everything. And I know that sounds horrible because you're oh, you're four kids. I was like, but it was it was so much intensity and so intense. And my friend was like, I'm applying to be a flight attendant. I was like, Why the hell not?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And so I was like, I'll do it too. And then literally that's how I got in. And it's so funny because my friend didn't even become a flight attendant.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that is funny.
SPEAKER_02And I got I got hired right away. It was weird because I went to the interview. It was with um a different airline, the regional. And so I got into the interview. I went out to my car, I was on the friend with the I was on the phone with a friend, and she said, um, I was talking to her, and I get a ding on my phone back in the day. This is like 10 years. When your phone made noise. Yeah. Before I silenced it for life.
SPEAKER_03No, if it does it, it's going in the toilet.
SPEAKER_02Because of reserve life. Um, yeah, so I hear a ding, and um, it was an email saying congratulations. So I literally just left the interview and I was in the car and I got it. And I was like, Do I really want this? And I got all excited, and I was like, Yeah, I do. Because um, what a privilege to be able to like travel the world and be able to um be a light to people.
SPEAKER_03I don't think it I mean, you mentioned it makes you a bad mom that you wanted to escape because you were going through about a bunch of stuff, but I don't think finding a job that allows you to like go be a grown-up and a human and forget for a minute makes you a bad mom. I think the fact that you were aware of aware of yourself enough to like know that that's what you needed to be a good mom makes you a better one, truthfully.
SPEAKER_02Well, my kids are pretty amazing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. Well, you can't give from an empty cup, truthfully. So you have to go take care of yourself.
SPEAKER_02You have to feel
your own. And I've learned that throughout the years, like big time.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like I the more I take care of myself, I just feel so much better. And like people notice too. They're like, what are you doing? And I'm like, I'm just taking care of myself. If I want something, I get it. If I like, you know, I'm like, if I want to do something, I go and do it.
SPEAKER_03And yeah. And and I I know this is such a cliche, especially given that we're all flight attendants, but like that whole thing about putting the oxygen mask on before helping someone else. Like in those situations, you know, I'm sure there's a lot of parents out there who've been in, you know, really difficult, traumatic situations like that, and they relate to that, where it's like you really have to do something to fix life for yourself before you can give back to them. So it's beautiful that this job came at just the right time and that you were able to step back and like kind of breathe for a minute so that you could keep going, keep pushing. I mean, I that's so inspiring.
SPEAKER_02And it taught me so much. I learned so much. Like just because I mean, you know my story. I like literally lived out of my car when I first started because with regional is a lot less pay.
SPEAKER_04And so um we've talked about that a lot on here, yeah, actually.
SPEAKER_02So now I'm with a major airline, but um, but I worked so hard, and that's why I was always working and I was used to working. So I mean, I've just done so many jobs to like keep the paychecks coming because I had to pay child support for a long time, and so um well, not a long time considering my kids were getting older. So but they're all in like college now and graduating. But with that said, I worked many jobs to like um supplement what I needed to.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um I I mean, as as we all do, I mean, the I think for whatever reason that we get into the side hustles, I think a lot of us have different things that we do. I think a lot of people think that this is a brainless job, and I don't think that they realize that they're sitting on the jump seat with nurses and uh real estate agents and um, you know, just very educated people.
SPEAKER_02True. I've sat with a doctor and so many people. I'm like and a lawyer and you know, a paralegal, and like you just sit with so many amazing people.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Jump seat therapy is real.
SPEAKER_03Well, I yeah, it really is. And I also think that the escape ism part of the job is a big draw for a lot of people because you're really hiding in plain sight. Like you can put down whatever the other thing is. If you know, you had this stressful accountant job, and you're like, I can't do this anymore. I but I still want to be in the workforce, and they escape all of that stress and they come find this job, and they're like, actually, this is a lot of fun. I don't need to go back to that other thing. But that's something I've ended up really loving about
this job because I it was escapism for me. Like I was working in the nonprofit world, overworked, underpaid, stressed out, and I was like, There's gotta be more to life than this. But now it's like with side hustles and things, you can go find your purpose, find your passion, find other hobbies, find things to do with your life that give you, you know, a little more meaning than maybe our job does on a day-to-day basis, which is part of what makes flight attendant life so damn incredible. Yes.
SPEAKER_02Agreed.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so let's talk about some of your side hustles. So you are a flight attendant. What was the first side hustle that you remember doing?
SPEAKER_02So when I became a flight attendant, I was a barista, but I'll be honest.
SPEAKER_03So the flight attendant was a side hustle.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Flight attendant was the OG side hustle. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So like people didn't care to get touched and stuff. So that became more of a big business for me during the COVID times, and I was like, and I was still a flight attendant. So, but I was doing the massage therapy. I've taught yoga for 25 years, and I literally jump off the plane, go do a massage, then go teach a yoga class, and then like just plan around my schedule. So it was really challenging. And I do want to say when I started, I said I like slept in my car, and but I own my own house now, and I'm actually considering buying a different house now with my sister, which is exciting. So it's closer to the water.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I live at the beach. Um but you know, kind of rags the riches story, but anyway, so massage therapy, and I did that for 20 years, like I said, 25 years um teaching yoga. And then I've done a lot of things. Like when I was younger, I used to teach at a um rock rock climbing wall facility. So I don't know if you've ever been rock climbing.
SPEAKER_03Yes. I have not not real rock climbing. Shocker, I know, but facility.
SPEAKER_02You have to learn to tie the knot first.
SPEAKER_03You know, I'd fall off the wall for sure.
SPEAKER_02I did some personal training. I used to be a personal trainer before I can became a flight attendant and nutrition. I worked at a like a nutrition facility where we teach people like about nutrition and things like that, which is really hard to do while you're traveling.
SPEAKER_03So it's such a struggle for flight attendants. I mean, we always talk about this like meal prepping and stuff is such a stressful thing. I think a lot of flight attendants have made that kind of a side hustle thing with like nutrition and diet because it it goes hand in hand with what we do. Right. Well, it sounds like you've always been the type of person that's held multiple jobs or done multiple things at one time. Yes. Um, do you think that flying has influenced the type of hustles that you do now?
SPEAKER_02Like Absolutely. Like
um not just the other jobs, but also like doing murals, like squeezing in, because I'm an artist at heart. And you know, I've written several books, 10 books, and one is actually about a flight attendant. It's a children's book. It's a day in the life of a flight attendant called The Happy Flight Attendant.
SPEAKER_03So cute. Such a cute book. If you have chick kids or no kids or have kids in your life, you should go look it up.
SPEAKER_02I remember who made me read it on the Bali trip.
SPEAKER_03Uh both of us did. Yeah, I think we made read it out loud. I was like, what? A little backstory for those of you listening/slash watching. Um, Kara has been on multiple of our group trips now, and when we were in Bali, she brought her kids' books with her, and we made her read one of them on the bus because we were stuck in traffic, I think, going somewhere. And we were like, it's story time with a parallel. So we had the microphone and made us read her or read us her whole book. It was story time with Kara. It was great. It was like a classroom. She like showed us all the pictures. I felt like a preschool teacher. Yeah. It was great. I mean, honestly, you were that day.
SPEAKER_02One of the many hats we put on as flight attendants.
SPEAKER_03Yep. Well, I mean, it being a flight attendant has to influence the jobs that you pick now. Like talking about being a muralist, you have to make sure that you have the time to complete it. Right. I mean, I know we talk about the joys of our job being flexible,
but um, if you're starting a project like that, yeah, it has to take time.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. The venues too, like the people that hire you, they um depends on how fast they want it done. And a lot of people want things done fast. So, like, I I do work pretty fast. I'm a little ADHD, as you can see. So I have a lot of energy. So when they hire me, though, I'm like, how long do you like what do you want exactly? I need to know exactly what kind of art you want on your wall because I feel like I'm like, you show me what you want, I'll try to give it to you. And that's what I do. And so um, like I did a winery, like not a winery, but it was a wine bar. And so it said, make poor like you pour it, poor decisions. Poor decisions. And then I wrote the it was graffiti looking, and I put this is what she wanted, and it it turned out so beautiful. It was one of my favorite pieces, and then in between all the um this huge font of make poor decisions that's in graffiti, there was the different type of wines written in different script. Oh, that's fine. Yeah, so that took about three days, and I was on a ladder and got exhausted, and then they also wanted a map of the world in a really funky way, so I did that freestyle on one of their walls. So I did that really quick. Like it was like it took me about uh going back and forth between work, about two weeks, but honestly, it only took three days per mural. Right. So it can come across like it takes longer, but honestly, because I had to step away and come back to it because I had a flight or something to had to go to work.
SPEAKER_03So that's a really cool way to like incorporate the brand and add in a little creativity though. I love that you can kind of mix both worlds. What was that like creatively though? I feel like when you're kind of at least for me, when I'm doing something creative, I'm
either like in the zone or I'm not. And if I'm not motivated to be creative, it's not, it doesn't come. Right. So, like, how are you able to turn that on and off with okay, now I have to go fly a trip and then come back and jump back into this creative space? Yeah, what what's your process like?
SPEAKER_02So I cannot remember the book, but there is a book I read about writing because I'm such a big writer, like I'll write and journal a lot, and that's why I have my books um like doing the labors. We're talking about another writer that writes on the plane, like she'll write it, whatever. But um during the labor layover, like I'll get an idea and I just start writing for 30 minutes, boom, there it is. But this writer, and I hate that I can't remember her name, she's a great writer, but she wrote a book about writing and she said do it like a minute a day, and then it built up to two minutes, three minutes, four minutes, five minutes, five minutes a day. Then it turns into thirty minutes a day. But creating, and that's the same with the gym. I was reading another book about how to get back in shape, and they were saying, just go to the gym, don't do anything. Literally just drive up, sit there in the parking lot. You don't want to go in, right?
SPEAKER_03There's a plan I could get behind.
SPEAKER_01You just sit there, you sit there and you're like, okay.
SPEAKER_03I don't think you drive any Cheetos, though. I think you have to like eventually you have to go into the gym, eventually you have to like walk up to a machine and start working on things telling people I go to the gym every day. And that's what happens.
SPEAKER_00She said, even like going into the gym, sitting on the toilet, like if you're having the toilet, and then leave the gym.
SPEAKER_02But you made it. And then eventually they got to the point where like, I'm already here. Let's work out. Right. Like, let's do five minutes or whatever. Yeah. So making yourself commit, like create the habit by just sitting there and go, okay, I'm gonna write, even if you don't have anything to write, and then eventually it creates such a habit, and then things start coming, you know, even if like, oh, what I dreamed about last night. Oh, I can remember that. Oh, okay. If not, okay, write about something else. Like, you know, just write it right, you're grateful for like just sitting there and trying to think, okay, creating that habit alone is so is the biggest part creating the habit of doing it, and then it flourishes because you start to commit more time to it.
SPEAKER_03So that's how you keep your creative juices flowing when you're flying, so that you're not totally turning that side of your brain off.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. So when um I have a book.
SPEAKER_03That's what I hear. You just don't turn it off. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02People inspire me. Like, so there was a passenger, there's a little girl that came on with
this little, you know, lion, and she was holding it tight. She's like, This is my Simba. And I was like, Oh, Simba. I was like, does he roar, you know? And like, you know, she was that was the inspiration for Jane Takes Lane on a plane, which is a book I read about a little girl commuting to see her father. And the little toy lion comes to life on the plane and he gets in a bad mood, needs everybody's food, you see the biscoff flying. So, like, it was cute, you know, the inspiration you see all around you, and just I guess being in the moment.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Well, I mean, we can totally relate to that. Obviously, our version of creation is a little different than yours, but it's great that you can pull moments from the job and turn that into some beautiful piece of art. I mean, we joke about this a lot when it comes to like memes and things that we make. We're like, you can tell if we've been at work or we haven't been at work because the account will go quiet for like a week when we're not at work. And then the second one of us is back on a trip, it's like bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, memes, memes, meme, meme, memes. Like we've got inspiration for days now. So yeah, so you know, it's obviously a different level of creation, but we totally understand the pulling inspiration from the world around you.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's like I said earlier. I was like, you guys inspire me and I love you so much. Like when I found your account, I was like, hell yeah.
SPEAKER_00I was like, oh like laughing and scrolling, and I didn't realize how I like you dive into the internet, into the interwebs.
SPEAKER_03Oh yes, we've fallen down that rabbit hole many, many times. Yeah. We love finding a new creator too and just absorbing all their content. I do it all the time. Yeah. I totally understand.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03There's just so many people doing so many different things out there. Like there really is a space for everyone, as saturated as the internet has become, like there's someone doing what you're doing or is doing something that speaks to you. And like that's what I love about our account and our brand as two guys on a plane is like, you know, people are like, Oh, that's you know, that is that even popular. And it's like you'd be surprised how many people out there exactly it connect with it. And it's really cool to be able to connect with people that way.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I just assume I automatically assume that flight attendants do something else now, to the point where like we're sitting on the jumpsy, and I'm like, So what do you do? I was flying
with somebody the other day and they were like, I'm a flight attendant, what do you do? And I was like, no, no, like, but like what do you do? And she was like, I'm a flight attendant, what do you do? And I was like, I do a lot, like I do so many things outside of this. Like, do you have a hustle? And she was like, No, I'm a flight attendant. And I was like, Good for you. Love this journey.
SPEAKER_02Well, there's those that like that's all they've ever wanted to be.
SPEAKER_03True. And I love judgment. Zero judgment. It is beautiful, but I just every flight attendant I know has does something else. Like everyone has something else outside of this. And it just it's gotten to the point to where I was kind of like, wait, what? I you're not just a flight attendant, but everyone would be like, You're just a flight.
SPEAKER_02They fly 200 hours a month.
SPEAKER_03Listen, those people are grumpy. That's insane. You fly with those people, and you're like, oh, I could have guessed you're a little grumpy and need to take a day off.
SPEAKER_02Oh my, oh my god.
SPEAKER_03I'm a hundred and a half hour flyer. As like I'm a hundred.
SPEAKER_02I'm ashamed. I'm like 80.
SPEAKER_0380 is a good number, though. I think 80 is a good one.
SPEAKER_02Stick with the European way of life. They're like 80 hours, you're cut off.
SPEAKER_0380 hours is a respectable amount of flying. I'm a plus a hundred, plus all the other jobs that I do. And that's why people will be like, this is why he acts like this at work. Yes. I find 100 is my max, and then I feel myself getting a little bitchy, and I'm like, okay, you need to drop your next trip and take a day off because you were not being nice to people.
SPEAKER_02That's why I um well, I don't know if you guys wanted to mention the documentary.
SPEAKER_03Um No, we do.
SPEAKER_02So tell us about it.
SPEAKER_03We do. We were gonna get there, but getting there. Great segue, Kara. What's next for you in terms of side hustles?
SPEAKER_02So there's this documentary idea I
had, and I told my oldest son about it who creates film. He's um he was like, Mom, he during Christmas time, he goes, he had this presentation for to be able to present in front of all these like investors. And he was like, Okay, can I practice on you guys? So he was in front of his siblings and me, and I'm watching, and I'm like, this film is gonna be awesome. And I was like, I'll fund you. He was like, What? I was like, one condition you have to do a documentary on flight attendants. And he was like, What?
SPEAKER_03Oh, so that's interesting. That's how that got started then. You made a little deal with him. That was great.
SPEAKER_02I did. And he was like, he thought about it, not even a couple hours later. He's like, okay, I'll do it.
SPEAKER_03I mean, when there's funding involved, yeah. Right, right.
SPEAKER_02I was like, okay. So, um, and this was all possible because you know, you guys know my story. Um, so my mom passed away like over a year and a half ago, and um, so that's why I was able to fund it. Um, even though I've worked multiple jobs and got myself to where I am in life, like I own my house and I do all these things. Um, and I actually did my first mural that was like for a nonprofit for an organization that helps children, and it is just an incredible organization, and they take in kids and give them counseling that I've been through a lot of trauma. So um I was like able to do a dedication mural in their waiting room where the children wait to go see the counselor or you know, talk to the cops and um talk to people to get ready for court and things like that because it's serious stuff, but anyway, long story short, mom's gone and helps Kara like be able to do a little bit more freedom, and so that's why I was like, all right, let me help my son because I was like, this would be awesome. And then the in that part making him go, You gotta do a story on flight attendants. And it's called Cabin Pressure. And I have flight attendants
from different airlines, like all the airlines, regional, major, and they're not saying what airline they're on, but they're gonna they're just telling their story and this amazing um song I found on Instagram. Um I think it's Odnon. I don't know how you say it though, but the creator of this song, Invisible Miles, I messaged on Instagram saying, Can I use this song? Because it's about flight attendants. And they said, Yes. I don't even know if it's a guy or a girl that wrote this song. Like literally, I'm like messaging them back and forth. And anyway, got permission, and I'm just so excited about this. It's coming together amazing. You guys said you'd be a part of it, and so I get to interview you guys, which was amazing and fun. Of course, you're gonna laugh when you see their scene because the contagious Andrew Lav and the rich little it's well known around these parts.
SPEAKER_00It's my favorite.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you'll catch us in these same exact outfits uh in Kara's documentary in 2027.
SPEAKER_02So, yeah, so we're putting this documentary together and just flying around interviewing flight attendants of from everywhere, different places, even in Europe with the Thanza and I shouldn't have said that right.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_04It's okay. It's okay. It's okay.
SPEAKER_02If you know the colors, you'll know. So, but yeah, it's really it's I'm just honored. I I keep using that word, but I really am. I'm so grateful. Like I am so grateful to be a part of something that helps with human connection. And we talked about that earlier about human connection, and that's what we're here on earth for, like the human connection and being a flight attendant is such a human connection thing. Like when somebody steps on the plane, you're like, hello, and you're like greeting them, and you're like, I'm gonna take care of you, okay? I'm looking out for you. I'm out here, I'm here for your safety, but I'm here to make sure that you get to this other place and I'm gonna service you in a way like, hey, I'm gonna give you drinks, this and that, not you know, my mind, you know.
SPEAKER_00Okay, but you know, we can cut that if you need to. No, we're leaving that in. Okay.
SPEAKER_04100% leaving it in.
SPEAKER_02Professional. Um, but no, like we are here to, you know, we're here to be, you know, help you. And that is the biggest thing, I think, for me in life is to connect. And I love this, like that you have this podcast
because you're connecting. Yeah, and it's beautiful, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, it's it's so cool when you can create something, whatever it may be, that speaks to people, and you know, art really is so powerful in that way where you can make something that just changes people's minds about something or shines light on something that people don't know enough about. Like, it's it's so cool that you're using your resources and your platform and your son to do this project. I mean, and also you must be so proud too, like as a parent, to be like, okay, I not only am I trying to do my best part in the world, but I've also, you know, guided this human being to also be a member of society who cares and has compassion and is creative and and full of full of life, you know. So it's really cool that everything is, it's kind of a full circle thing for you. A creator created a creator.
unknownThere we go.
SPEAKER_03Yes, and also how great is it to like use the connection with your mom to connect with your son on that level. Like, that's also very full circle. I yeah, I thought that was beautiful. Like, I'm sure she's around being very proud of the way that you're using what she left for you to connect with your son on that level.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, absolutely. And it's it's kind of weird, but like I almost forgot yesterday was my dad's birthday. So both my parents are gone.
So um I was very close with my dad compared to my mother. But I'm like I there's that gratitude. I'm so grateful for both of them, even though like you don't have the best of family relationships. Like sometimes like work relationships are not all the best. But I'm still grateful because like every lesson I've learned from my mother, my father, my co-workers, everybody, it's just a gratitude because I have to go into life that way, otherwise I'd be miserable. Um, but I'm very like it is full circle, it's complete full circle. And like my son mentioned he sent he reminded me yesterday about my dad's birthday. He sent me um, you know, a picture of his first film festival like over five years ago when he was a teenager. He sent me a picture of a film festival he was at, and I made a Facebook memory of it about how it was, you know, my dad I put that in there. And so my parents, you know, just it is so weird. It's so I feel like I mean, it's so wild to bring it all together. You're like, whoa, you don't see the full picture. It's like all I can see are bits and pieces, and that's your life, and then everything comes together, and you're like, whoa, full circle.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think that is such a beautiful lesson that you have learned in life, though, that unfortunately a lot of people don't learn, but you seem to understand so well that the trauma and the pain and all of the experiences that you've been through, you have to turn that into something positive. You have to let that fuel your fire, you have to shift the mindset, you know, and and don't let that win. Don't let those things win. Like, exactly, don't let them consume you. I know so many people who've been through like horrible things, and it's just it's taken them down. And obviously, we all fall down sometimes, but it's how you recover and how you get back up in those situations, and you've done it so beautifully to to do so many creative projects and and just be a beautiful light in this world. So seriously, thank you for being you. Thank you for for doing the work that you're doing. It's it's inspiring.
SPEAKER_02Well, we're reflecting, right? Projection. Yeah. Projection.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, yeah. I am speaking from a place of I understand for sure. Um, well, Kara, thank you for coming and joining us in the studio today. It's been so much fun having you and hearing about all of your amazing side hustles and projects, and you keep us inspiring thinking that we should do more. It's a lightning round of questions where we ask you a bunch of questions, say the first thing on your mind,
and and we'll see.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03All right, you ready? Okay. Uh window or aisle. Of course, it's the best seat.
unknownI gotta exit.
SPEAKER_03Airbus or Boeing.
SPEAKER_02Oh, definitely Airbus.
SPEAKER_03Uh hotel or Airbnb? Hotel. Favorite layover city.
SPEAKER_02Oh gosh, Dublin.
SPEAKER_03Favorite airport.
SPEAKER_02Oh gosh, that's a hard one. I know it sounds crazy.
SPEAKER_03But New York Least favorite airport.
SPEAKER_04Oh. That's a hard one.
SPEAKER_03Is it? Have you been to Atlanta recently? It's not.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03I'm like, we have an idea. Yeah, take it or leave it.
SPEAKER_01You hit the nail on the head. Oh my god. You just had to, and then all the memories go.
SPEAKER_03As soon as you're here, you're like, yup, that's the way. Yeah. Those are always here. Good choices. Those two other good choices. Um go to snack while flying.
SPEAKER_02Go to snack while flying. Um, I hate to say it.
SPEAKER_03Say it.
SPEAKER_00The cookies. The international cookies. No judgment.
SPEAKER_03No judgment. The ones you tried to give us this morning that we said no to. Maybe we should have said yes. Bring those by later. Um, favorite song on your travel playlist right now.
SPEAKER_02Oh, Invisible Miles.
SPEAKER_03Oh, well, of course, that's a perfect answer. Uh, one item that's always in your carry-on.
SPEAKER_00Give me two seconds. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03It's okay. We're gonna start playing Jeopardy Music. Yeah. I'm surprised it's not one of your books, honestly.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay. Well, oh, it's a book. Like I always have to have a book because like I'm literally, I don't know how you say the name, but I'm reading the um Paras Polopolis or I can't pronounce it. Peros Polis or something. It's like this, it's on the Iran revolution in this lady. Anyway, always have to have a book. That's a whole idea. But it's a cartoon version. I've never done that before, and it's so cool. I love it. Anyway, okay, always a book. Always a book.
SPEAKER_03Uh, one place that you've always wanted to visit that you haven't been to yet.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so Antarctica.
SPEAKER_03So high on our list. Where we want to go so bad. We're trying so hard to plan. You're going in the fall. Oh my god, we're so busy in the fall. We don't know.
SPEAKER_04I don't know yet.
SPEAKER_03That's one of our that's one of our destinations that we want to plan a trip to. We're trying to figure out how to make that like a group trip. It's on our list.
SPEAKER_04We're thinking about it.
SPEAKER_03It's gonna be pricey, though, is the problem. It's gonna be hard to get people to pay that. It's so pricey. Antarctica is not sure that staff traveler is gonna be. I'm like, how much in staff travelers? Go through South America. I don't know if Staff Traveler is gonna help me with the routing. So true. Do you think Staff Traveler can find us a way to Antarctica?
SPEAKER_04Staff Traveler.
SPEAKER_03They have that routing tool. They have to be able to. Are you listening? Are you watching? Do you staff traveler? Do you use Staff Traveler when you travel? Yeah. Yeah. Staff Traveler is our favorite app. It helps us get literally everywhere, and it's it's so helpful. But I don't know if it's gonna get us to an arca. But they do have a really exciting new feature. It's called Root Explorer. Uh-huh. And you can go and you can like search all the different like possibilities of places and how to get to where you want to go. It's like changed the way that we're traveling right now because we're like, okay, let's plug it into Root Explorer, see what the options are. And we were talking about this last night. We ended up looking at places like Nepal. We're looking at all these places. We're going to India this fall and we're trying to figure out where to get to from there.
