How Does Copper And Zinc Compare To Traditional Materials?
Discover why copper and zinc stand as timeless champions in the building world, outperforming traditional materials in ways that might surprise you. Jorge Fiscal reveals how these remarkable metals deliver three to four times the lifespan of conventional alternatives while requiring virtually no maintenance—a compelling combination that makes their higher initial investment tremendously worthwhile over time.
Beyond performance and aesthetics, Jorge highlights the sustainability advantages of copper and zinc. These 100% recyclable metals create zero waste impact, standing in stark contrast to many conventional building products. Whether you're a homeowner, general contractor, architect or interior designer, this is your go-to space for inspiration and expert insights into copper and zinc craftsmanship. Let's get started.
Speaker 2:Are copper and zinc just pretty faces or do they bring real advantages over traditional materials? Let's dive into the durability, aesthetics and sustainability of these powerhouse metals. You might be surprised at how they stack up against the classics. Welcome back everyone. I'm Sofia Yvette, co-host, slash producer. Back in the studio with Jorge Fiscal. Jorge, how's it going?
Speaker 3:Hello Sofia, Doing well. Thank you for asking. I hope you are.
Speaker 2:Thank you, I am too Thank you, so, jorge how does copper and zinc compare to traditional materials?
Speaker 3:Copper and zinc stand out from the rest of the materials because their longevity, their aesthetics and the performance on our historic landmarks had been for decades, but most of them easily over a century. So the beauty of their patina and intricate designs comes to a no-brainer, and intricate designs comes to a no-brainer.
Speaker 2:Lasting these many years is definitely cost effective over the years. So, jorge, how do copper and zinc compare to materials like steel, wood or asphalt in terms of longevity?
Speaker 3:In terms of longevity they are highly resistant to corrosion, even in harsh environments. Besides, the lightweight of these materials, the aesthetics and the longevity and the cost, and all of these attributes with very low maintenance, in my opinion, it's the way to go to preserve these historic buildings.
Speaker 2:And what are the maintenance requirements for copper and zinc versus more common materials?
Speaker 3:Basically when we have facades it's virtually no maintenance. All of this comes to the installation procedures. The majority of them, if they are done properly, the traditional way, we have a maintenance-free product most of the times. And that answer it varies because sometimes we have some other systems with it that basically the other elements, such as, let's say, snow guards for instance. That's when the maintenance. If some adhesives are involved, then the faulty issue is the adhesive. But whenever we have a true system that goes with a true standing seam system, what are the maintenance requirements for copper and zinc versus the more common materials?
Speaker 3:But basically it's both of these materials require low to no maintenance, especially on walls.
Speaker 2:And are there cost differences that homeowners or designers should consider when choosing these metals?
Speaker 3:Originally. The way that I see it, is an investment, an original investment for these materials. Depending on the system these are on, the long run will be paid off due to decades. Let's say, for instance, when shingles or wood or any other type of materials, or even a metal roof, but ferrous materials, will have a lifespan of 20, 30 years. Copper and zinc will last three to four times more.
Speaker 2:So, jorge, can my house be both stylish and survive the next century, or is that asking too much?
Speaker 3:No, there are several advantages. Yes, a couple of the properties of these metals are malleability. Metals can contour intricate shapes. Intricate designs come to be one of the architect's favorites because it's not only the shapes but comes along with the beauty of their developed patinas.
Speaker 2:So, Jorge, if copper and zinc were superheroes, what powers would they have over wood and asphalt?
Speaker 3:I will say a lot of attributes for these beautiful metals Lightweight, long-lasting. The aesthetics, sustainability. All of these materials are 100% recyclable, so there is zero waste and impact on the environment. The durability even on the harsh environments, such as by the water polluted cities, we still see these historic landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty for over a century.
Speaker 2:Amazing. Any final words today for our listeners about custom copper and zinc. Any final words today for our listeners about custom copper and zinc.
Speaker 3:Yes, one thing is to consider the materials. A whole different thing is to consider your installer. So do your research. Because these metals, basically they have called us several times and we have to redo something because it was not properly installed All of these materials, we have to follow through how they behave, we have to learn how they behave to be able to make them last as long as the metal itself.
Speaker 2:Love it, Jorge. We'll catch you in the next episode. Have a fantastic rest of your day.
Speaker 3:Thank you, Sophia.
