AI SUMMARY FOR GIGGLES:
Naomi steps off a shiny chrome bus into “New York Town” on a sweltering July day with a dream in her head and pockets full of waitressing cash. That’s also the moment Greedy Jake decides she’s his next big score, and our live, fully improvised Golden Age of Radio noir starts sprinting. We pull real audience prompts from the room, then spin them into a fast-moving audio story with classic narration, big character swings, and old-time radio sound effects that make the city feel loud, crowded, and just a little dangerous.
Back in Toledo, Naomi’s dad Bill Weatherson realizes she’s gone and does what any calm, polite man would do: panic, grab an unreasonable number of guns, and chase her to New York. While the big city runs at double time, Toledo slows into absurd chaos as observant Gus watches calamity unfold and Naomi’s mom discovers the joy of an expectation-free morning. The cross-cuts turn into a comic pressure cooker, pushing Naomi toward a nightclub deal, a new “friend” named Stinky Tom, and a romance sparked by a weirdly perfect detail: blueberry pancakes.
Then a telegram drops a twist that reframes everything, and Donnie the boss shows up with a deadline and a harbor threat that forces a finale. If you like improvised comedy podcasts, live theater energy, old-time radio style storytelling, and sharply timed character comedy, this recording from the Yes Ann Improv Festival at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor is for you. Audience Prompts Become The Story
Chuck CottermanThank you for your patience. We are the Improvised Golden Age of Radio, and I am your host, Chuck Cotterman. Thank you, Ann Arbor, for having us tonight, and thank you to the S Ann Festival. Um now we are still setting up. We have Ed Zach right there on our digital sounds, and Caitlin Schneider. She is our analog at the Foley Table. And I'm gonna get the rest of our cast out here. We already have Eric Peterson right here on stage, everyone. Philip Amler, come on out. Jordan Reichhardt, and Eric Muller. Now, before we get started, I would like to get to know a few of you for just a second. Uh couple questions for you, everybody. Uh, usually I would come down into the audience, but we have these wonderful vintage microphones. So I'm gonna ask from up here and ask you to shout it out. And I might not be able to see you, so I'm gonna do like this and try to get some people from the back as well. Uh, first things first, could anyone who would like to answer a question raise your hand? That's the best bit ever. Alright, right there. What was your favorite toy as a child? Can I ask you that?
unknownBuzz Lightyear.
Chuck CottermanBuzz Lightyear. Buzz Lightyear, an astronaut, famously. Uh, can you tell me what was the f your favorite thing to pretend to do with Buzz Lightyear, your toy? Crash him into stuff. That's a really great job. Anybody have any questions about Buzz Lightyear up on the back of the stage here?
SPEAKER_00Uh did someone particular give you that toy? Your mom. Okay, was it for an occasion? Okay, great. Thank you.
Chuck CottermanExcellent. A wonderful Christmas present. Uh, anyone else? Let's see. Sir, right there. I uh you made eye contact. It was very uh very obvious for you. That's on you. And I have to ask you, where did you get that shirt? Coles, uh, did you get it for yourself or was it a present? Alright. Um when you put in that I love, by the way, everyone, I love this shirt. There are palm trees on it. It is abs. Please stand up. Please stand up. What a shirt. I personally have a couple of shirts that when I put them on make me feel very relaxed. What do you feel when you put on that shirt?
unknownVery tense.
Chuck CottermanVery tense. Excellent. He wore the right shirt, everyone. Your name, sir? Bill! Bill had to think about it, but a round of applause for Bill! And now, my friend with uh the Buzz Light Your Toy, your name? Naomi. Round of applause for Naomi as well. And now I'm gonna ask one more person. Let's see. Uh, anyone in the back? Yeah, I've got you right there in the back. Your name? Stephanie, thank you very much. Stephanie, what's your favorite town other than Ann Arbor? New York City. Ooh. Big town. I've I've been there once or twice. The town name is probably a bit of a misnomer, but I will take it. And what was your favorite thing to do in New York City? Anyone on the back line have a question about New York City? Yes.
SPEAKER_03What type of bagel?
Chuck CottermanOh, yeah. Everything cream cheese. These are all very good answers. And whether you like it or not, those answers are now a part of the story for tonight's show. Every one of you are a part of tonight's show, and I thank you very much. But we do need one last piece of information for that. I'm going to the cast. Cast, do we have a title for tonight's episode?
SPEAKER_08Okay, yeah. Yeah, here we go.
Chuck CottermanReady?
SPEAKER_08Naomi crashes New York.
Chuck CottermanNaomi crashes New York. Everybody, round of applause for that title. I love it. Now you see, long hours, countless rehearsals, and meticulously written scripts went into the classic style of Golden Age of Radio. Uh, we've done none of that. But we will attempt tonight to give you a wonderful episode of Golden Age of Radio. Uh, sit back, relax, enjoy the sights, and especially the sounds. And please laugh loud and laugh long, because when you get picked up by the mics, you will be a part of radio history. And now, tonight's episode, Naomi Crashes New York.
Naomi Arrives In New York Town
SPEAKER_10It was a sweltering hot July day in the big town. As they called it, the souvenir merchants were plying their trade up and down the boulevards and avenues. What is it? The plastic statue of liberties were melting into the sidewalks that July. Lady Liberty got Lady Liberty here. And just then, a shiny chrome bus pulled up to the port station. The famous New York port station, as it's called by the locals. And off that bus came Naomi. A Haysie, you might call her. Excuse me, sir. Not now, I'm narrating, baby.
SPEAKER_04Excuse me, sir.
SPEAKER_08What do you want, kid?
SPEAKER_05Is this a New York port station?
SPEAKER_08It sure is. What kind what town you think you're in, huh?
SPEAKER_05I don't know. I came a long way from Toledo.
SPEAKER_08Toledo? Toledo? I hey, I don't know. I never left this town.
SPEAKER_05I'm a rolling stone. I don't even memorize the names of the towns before I leave.
SPEAKER_08Wow, you looks a little young to have lived such a life like this.
SPEAKER_05Uh, tell me about it, but I heard here, here in New York, it doesn't matter what age you are, you can really make something of yourself no matter what.
SPEAKER_08That's the law.
SPEAKER_05Oh, you're an officer of it.
SPEAKER_08Oh, no, but I knows a thing or two about the underside of the city.
SPEAKER_10Oh, Greedy Jake had found another victim, shall we say? Coming off the bus from good old Toledo.
SPEAKER_08Listen, what's your name, kid?
SPEAKER_05My name's Naomi, and I got a big problem.
SPEAKER_08What's your problem, Naomi?
SPEAKER_05My pockets are all full of cash. Oh.
SPEAKER_10That's a brand. Greedy Jake was standing there with his linen suit that was two sizes too big for him. Sweat dripping down into those July New York sewers.
SPEAKER_08Well, just well, just uh just out of curiosity, why are you uh why are you a person with so much cash on hand?
SPEAKER_05Oh, well, in my old town I was a waitress and I was really good at it. Uh, but there was nothing to do in the town of Toledo, so I didn't spend anything on anything.
SPEAKER_08Oh, well, why don't I uh help you invest it around town?
SPEAKER_05Oh, like in stocks, bonds, and things?
SPEAKER_08And things, but all the way back in good old Toledo, Ohio.
SPEAKER_10There was another gentleman waking up that morning finding out that his little Naomi had flown the coop. What's that you say? Naomi's gone to the big city!
SPEAKER_08This was Bill Weatherson, Naomi's father. He was a calm and polite man normally, but this morning he was quite agitated.
SPEAKER_10I'm quite agitated! This simply shan't do! Well, I I I was just over by the bus stop and I I saw Naomi boarding the bus, and I I saw the name on the side of the bus said New York Town, and oh I thought you might want to know. Oh, observant gus, thank you so much. Your fly's undone. Nothing gets by you. It was just this extreme agitation I'm in. I threw my pants on fundament and got all catty whoopers. Look, you need to look after the family farm and the restaurant where Naomi used to work, and God was she good at it. Whoa, that's two more jobs than I already have. It's gonna cut into my observing time. Well, look, you're gonna have to do something because I'm leaving.
SPEAKER_09There's no way I'm letting that big city eat my daughter alive.
SPEAKER_08And at just that moment, Gus noticed the ladder leaning against his shed. He thought, maybe I could get up there and see even more.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, you go to New York. I've got something means doing. All right. Wish me luck. Also, before I go, can you fetch all of my guns from the shed? I'm not going to New York unarmed.
SPEAKER_08I'll be right there. Meanwhile, back in their house, Naomi's mother was waking up to an empty bed.
SPEAKER_05This is nice. This is really nice. No expectations. I got a whole day ahead. Oh my, I'm gonna read! Maybe take a bath. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_10Suddenly she heard a gunshot from out in the yard.
SPEAKER_04Oh, please be my husband. Please be my husband. Yep, this one still works!
SPEAKER_05Oh, damn it, he's still alive.
SPEAKER_04Honey, I'm gonna be going to New York for a while. This one works too. I purposely left the charge of the farm to a man. Don't worry. Oh! Is the man single just asking for no reason at all? It's observant, Goss! He'll hold around, he'll see him, and he'll see you! Oh, I hope so! Don't worry, everything's well and kind!
SPEAKER_06Your night gun's undone!
SPEAKER_05Oh gosh, I didn't mean you to see that!
SPEAKER_08At that moment, the same Chrome bus that 18 hours prior had dropped Naomi off in New York town was pulling back in, waiting for new passengers. Here's my bus! Bill hopped on, gave us 18 pence, and took a seat at the back with the cool jewelry. 18 pence highway robbery. Can't sit here. What? Oh, how about here? No, you can't sit here. You're not cool enough, old man. Oh, all right.
SPEAKER_10Oh, don't you dare sit in this seat, boy. Oh, suck. Don't you call me boy. Uh, you better keep moving down this bus. That's all we will address the use of that word in this time period. Well, you got a lot of guns on you, so actually, I'm gonna I'm gonna get out of your way.
SPEAKER_08Hey, gun guy, sit down back there. I can't see. Oh, if there's an open seat next to you, could I sit there? I'm the driver.
SPEAKER_10Well, sure, pull up next to me. We'll make it work. The observant one's not here right now. Meanwhile, back in New York, greedy Jake was coming back to his hideout where he was being waited for. Hey, Jake!
SPEAKER_08You got them money you owe me? Donnie, I don't got it yet, but don't worry about the what I owe you. We're gonna get ten times that much. Oh, you know what happens to me when I don't get paid back on time.
SPEAKER_03When Donnie doesn't get paid back on time, he runs through the whole town screaming at anyone who will listen.
SPEAKER_08No, don't do it, Donnie. Don't go for a run. I feel like running and screaming.
SPEAKER_06No, I can't chase you down. I'm not fast enough. He started lacing up his shoes. Okay.
SPEAKER_08Donnie, Donnie, Donnie, before you go, listen to what I got to say. I met a bright-eyed and pushy tailed new New York towner. Pockets full of Toledo's, fannyest restaurants, cash. She's maybe the richest girl in Ohio. All right, Jake. You got 24 hours. How many days is that? In New York, that's half a day. Okay, okay. Cause things move faster the fastest town in the world. You know how the song goes. New York, New York, things move fast in here.
SPEAKER_03Hey, moved on to the second first.
SPEAKER_06Oh, and you go down to the point and you see the bus.
SPEAKER_09Naomi heard all the singing out in the lobby and she pushed her ear against the door to listen.
SPEAKER_10The bus, the bus, the bus. I guess they talked about plot or something. Alright, and remember, after you get that dame's money, you gotta make sure she's out of the picture.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, well, I'm not gonna marry her. What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_10No, I she's way too young for that. I mean you gotta make sure she's coolin' her heels in Heaven's waiting room. Naomi. Pretty sure she got the idea. Gasping horror.
SPEAKER_08Wait, when you say heaven's waiting room, though, I feel that one was pretty clear. Okay, okay, I think I get what you're saying.
SPEAKER_10Maybe she goes for a swim in the famous New Yorktown harbor. Naomi, who didn't know how to swim, gasped again.
SPEAKER_08What was that noise? That's a rat problem. Okay. Let's keep it down in case anyone overhears our plan. I'm gonna go out.
SPEAKER_10Alright, I'm gonna go running and screaming. No, don't do it, Donnie.
SPEAKER_08And you get me my money. Alright, here I go. Naomi.
SPEAKER_05Yeah?
SPEAKER_08So I was thinking, why don't we go and opens a nightclub?
SPEAKER_05I don't know. I was I was listening to you talk to that guy, and I I don't know if I even trust you too much anymore.
SPEAKER_08Oh, crap.
SPEAKER_06I was gasping. Oh, I thought it was the rat! Donnie said that's a rat!
SPEAKER_08Well, what do you think you heard?
SPEAKER_05Well, I heard something about swimming, which I don't know how to do.
SPEAKER_08Oh, okay, we can cancel that activity. That's no problem. No. I was just trying to show you.
SPEAKER_05I trust you otherwise, it was just the whole swimming thing. Hey.
SPEAKER_08All right. All right, let's go down to the nightclub. You can meet my friend Stinky Tom. Stinky Tom! Stinky Tom.
SPEAKER_05I trust him implicitly.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Anyone who's honest like that with their name, what's he got to hide?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, okay. Alright, I'll bring all my pockets of cash.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, please do.
SPEAKER_05Alright.

Dad Hits New York With Guns
SPEAKER_05dad Bill hopped off at the bus at the New York port station.
SPEAKER_09Oh boy, it's just as famous as I'd heard.
SPEAKER_04Oh, wow.
SPEAKER_09I really see why they call it a large apple.
SPEAKER_03Guns kept going off from his pocket. Sorry!
SPEAKER_08What are you apologizing for? You seem like a normal New Yorker.
SPEAKER_10Oh wow.
SPEAKER_04Hey, has anyone seen a young girl from Toledo? Suddenly someone stepped forward to answer his question.
SPEAKER_10Maybe I've seen her? Maybe I haven't. A Frenchman. That's not the accent I was expecting. Oh well, in this town we call Nouveau York. Expect the unexpected. Say, where where would an enterprising young girl with uh with uh pockets full of cash go in this town to make a mark and make her name? Oh well probably she has already been conned into starting a club of Zenoir. Oh, I don't know.
SPEAKER_09My Naomi's awful sharp. She's from Toledo, Ohio.
SPEAKER_10I respect your accent game right back at you, sir. Hey, yeah. Uh anyway, uh where well well where's the CD underworld part of the city? Oh, I could show you easily. By the way, I'm surprised you're not repelled by my o' dare.
SPEAKER_03I lost my sense of smell in a mule kick incident. Oh that was common in Toledo, Ohio. Ah, yes. Mule.
SPEAKER_10I hear they are very popular here in Etas Unis. We! Did I get that right? Oh I want to make love to you now. Oh, I don't swing that way. Oh, in New York, you must expect the unexpected.
SPEAKER_08Meanwhile, back in Toledo, Ohio, a sunset rose on a peaceful hill as wind dusted the grass back and forth, and the trees made a soft and delightful wave.
Toledo Burns While Gus Watches
SPEAKER_05If only I had a man to watch this with.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god! Oh, uh, you gotta help me. Uh, I don't know how to farm, and also I've never went to tables before. The restaurant caught on fire. Uh, so did the cows in the field.
SPEAKER_08Observant Gus had seen a lot, but he had done nothing.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, I watched it all. I watched the greasy rag fall onto the riddle, and then the fire spread into the dining room while all the people were eating.
SPEAKER_05Gus, you may have been told this before, but do you ever feel like everybody in this world does too much doing?
SPEAKER_10Uh yeah.
SPEAKER_05I I just like that you and me we can just sit and watch the world go by. You know what I mean? Yeah, well, watch the world burn at the moment.
SPEAKER_10You see, the the cows set on fire, they ran into the barn, the barn's on fire where the guns go.
SPEAKER_04Gus, don't bore me with the details, Gus! Okay.
SPEAKER_08At that moment, the flames leapt and burned down the volunteer from the fire department.
SPEAKER_06Oh, that's not good.
SPEAKER_04Ha!
Nightclub Pitch And Pancake Flirting
SPEAKER_10Oh across the country in New Wave, York at the club with Stinky Tom was Greedy Jake and Naomi.
SPEAKER_08Tom, this is my new friend Naomi. Uh hi! Or as we say in France. Oula!
SPEAKER_05Oh, a man of the world!
SPEAKER_08Oh, Tom's Tom's the best. He owns some of the best nightclubs. If you get in with him, you're set.
SPEAKER_05Hey, hey, Tom, can I ask you a question? Are you a man that likes blueberry pancakes in the morning? I can just tell it's a secret from when I was a waitress.
SPEAKER_10Oh mon dieu. Blueberry pancakes are my favorite food. I have not had some since I was back in France. We're good at this.
SPEAKER_08What's happening?
SPEAKER_10What's happening is I am falling in amour.
SPEAKER_04I don't know what that word means. Hey, say Tom, why'd you leave me out here in the lobby?
SPEAKER_10I well uh buy the way, greedy Jake. I've got another sucker ready for us. Naomi, what are you doing here? With these low lives and my good friend Tom. Who is this man?
SPEAKER_04Dad, your pockets are full of guns. You're GD right they are. That one works. Dad, I I had to make- Wait a minute, wait a minute!
SPEAKER_10You two know each other?
SPEAKER_04Well, well, yeah. I told you my daughter's name was Naomi and she's from Toledo, Ohio, and she's got pockets full of cash.
SPEAKER_10Oh! Hey, wait!
SPEAKER_08They just met. They just met, I gotta tell you. Oh, okay. Yeah, I don't know what you're implying.
SPEAKER_04Sorry. I just, I'm so worried about your sweetheart. You left so quickly.
SPEAKER_05I had to leave. The diner life was not for me. I was ready to make it in the big city. I found a new man. I was talking blueberry pancakes. Everything's going great here, Dad.
SPEAKER_09The blueberry pancakes your mother taught you how to make.
SPEAKER_05Oh, don't get all sentimental.
SPEAKER_10And why are you why are you trash talking the diner? That's what got you all your filthy lucre you're stuffed in your purse there.
SPEAKER_05Ah, what's money for if not for spending?
SPEAKER_10Wow, the big city changing. Don! Don, get in here! All right, where's my money?
SPEAKER_08You're blowing it.
SPEAKER_10Alright, I'll wait outside.
SPEAKER_08That's my boss. What kind of business are you in? We invest in nightclubs like this, and your daughter with her pockets full of waitress and cash was gonna be the newest New York town millionaire.
SPEAKER_05Oh Dad, there's not even any money to spend in Toledo, Ohio. There's only all the buildings are still standing. There's no disasters that I know of, so I had to make it to New York. Spend money on buildings here.
SPEAKER_09Well, I'm sorry. I I don't mean to stand in the way of your dreams, sweetheart. I'll go back to Toedo, Ohawi.
SPEAKER_08Greedy Jake was not a smart man, but he did like checking the news. He
Telegram Twist And A Sudden Proposal
SPEAKER_08walked to the telegram to see if anything had been on the wire. What's this? Wait, what's the name of the town you're from? Naomi, Bill, where did you guys go? Oh, what's our I left? I just went to get the telegram. I wanted to check the notes. You don't want us to come into the telegraph room with you. You have to ask. It's a small booth that wouldn't have fit everyone. I gave you your privacy. I was leaving. Look, if I'm reading this right, and I am, Tolidi, Ohio is burned to the ground.
SPEAKER_04No! Yeah. Dad!
SPEAKER_10Well, then I have to get back double quick. I'm worried about your mom. An observant gus. Not that there'd be anything between them, but just individually. I'm worried about both of them. Well! But do you want me to keep reading? Oh, sorry, yes, there are more? You really finished that thought, and I thought it was gonna okay.
SPEAKER_08Well, the one house survived, and apparently everyone celebrated a wedding there this morning. I don't know if it's related, you know. I don't know. Who is this telegram from and why was that in there?
SPEAKER_10Just the news. Well, that telegram has inspired my cure or art, as you say. So I would like to ask for your daughter's hand.
SPEAKER_05Please say yes, Dad, please. We have such a deep relationship. I've only known her for about 15 minutes.
SPEAKER_10But I can already tell. I've never seen Tom like this for a woman. I feel like since you left Toledo, you're not mine to give away anymore. You're your own woman.
SPEAKER_05Oh, thanks, Dad.
SPEAKER_10That is incredibly progressive of you, sir.
SPEAKER_05Wow. Wow!
SPEAKER_08And I knew you were young when you got here, but you grew up so fast in New York Times. Exactly.
SPEAKER_05It's double time here. Everything moves fast. Listen, we can't find the blueberry pancakes, the best blueberry pancakes in the world in New York. Come home. Come. I I say yes, I do, is what I'm saying. You want to come back to Toledo? Yeah, make blueberry pancakes, rebuild the town with these pockets full of cash. A vec.
SPEAKER_10What?
SPEAKER_05Sure.
SPEAKER_10No! Hey, what's a what does this sure mean? I've never heard that word before.
SPEAKER_09I don't know. Why don't you really woo her by speaking a bunch of French right now? A full one full sentence at least.
SPEAKER_10All right. Here I go. He was
Donnie Threatens The Harbor Finale
SPEAKER_10all right, you mugs! I've been waiting outside long enough. Now somebody's gonna pay Donnie his money, or else you're all sunk to the bottom of the harbor, as in dead. I don't know how to scoob. Wait, dead? Hold on a minute, Buster. I may be from small town Tawaywaha, but I don't put up with no bullies!
SPEAKER_08Come on, Dad, do it! Put down all your guns! There's so many guns.
SPEAKER_10Now these have been going off intermittently for no reason.
SPEAKER_06So now there we go!
unknownOh my god!
SPEAKER_08Tani the runner caught one in the chest and it didn't look like he would survive. You can't outrun that one.
SPEAKER_10I hope no one owes you any money that they're not gonna have to pay back anymore. Oh wow! Wow, what a lucky break for Greedy Jake. Now be careful, you better get out of the way because I still have all of my guns. Oh, I think it's probably okay. My dear, my answer is we. I would love to come home with you to Toledo, and we will mix with love on top of blueberry pancakes. Dad, close your ears. Sorry, I'm right here still, dude. Like I say keep going. Oh look, we better hurry. The town is waiting for us. We need to get back there and rebuild as soon as possible. Come on, can you break a one-dollar bill so we can have change for four of us to get on the bus? Absolutely, I've got it! And they all went down to that famous New York port where a shiny chrome bus rolled in with the words Toledo written on the side.
SPEAKER_08Boy, I feel like I've learned so much since I've been here. You're still sitting next to me as the driver, huh? There's tons of seats open.
SPEAKER_10Oh my dear. I cannot wait for us to be buried. And we will see all the great sights of Toledo together.
SPEAKER_05There's only one, it's the diner. I'll take you there. I'll take you.
SPEAKER_09And meanwhile, back in Toledo, two lovers were enjoying their newly matrimonied time together.
SPEAKER_05You're observant in so many ways. Don't do much, don't do much. Wella.
SPEAKER_10I see that breakfast is over. So I guess I'll head out to and right up outside, a shiny chrome bus rolled up.
SPEAKER_00It was kind of far away, actually, but a fervent gust got a good look at it from pretty far away.
