Back in the Grey Plane, beneath the impossible boughs of the exiled Gulthias tree, the party finally stands before the source of the soul plague.

But the horror of what they find is far worse than the tree itself.

From its vast, twisted branches hang strange fruit.

Not apples.

Not offerings.

Not anything the world was ever meant to grow.

Within each swollen fruit, shapes stir in terrible silence—humanoid forms curled in darkness, suspended as if in utero. Half-formed. Waiting. Breathing. Becoming.

Around them move root-like shadow puppets, thin and twitching things made of bark, darkness, and stolen instinct. They tend to the fruit with awful devotion, crawling across the branches and roots like servants caring for a nursery.

A nursery of souls.

The party has only moments to take in the truth before the tree becomes aware of them.

The air changes.

The roots shift.

The fruit trembles.

And something deep within the massive trunk begins to wake.

Whatever has been feeding on the plague, whatever has been gathering souls from Light of Doruusk, whatever horror has taken root at the center of the Gulthias tree—it emerges.

Not as a beast.

Not as a spirit.

But as the tree’s will made flesh.

A guardian born from rot, shadow, and stolen life rises to defend the fruit. And it does not come alone.

The shadow puppets stir into violence. The roots begin to move. The Grey Plane twists around the party as the boundary between worlds grows thin and unstable.

What follows is one of the most dangerous battles the party has ever faced.

Seriously.

Eric might TPK the whole party.

WTF.

With the strange fruit hanging overhead and the souls of another world trapped in the balance, the party is forced into a fight where retreat may be impossible, victory may come too late, and every mistake could mean becoming part of the tree’s next harvest.

Because the Gulthias tree is not simply surviving.

It is growing something.

And now the party has seen it.

Some evils do not hide in darkness.

Some bloom.

Some are tended.

And some defend their fruit with everything they have stolen.

Death and destruction lay out before you like a canvas, a well-crafted painting of gore. A black tree spiraling upward, larger than you remember it being. You only saw the bottom half of this tree and the top half of this tree at different times. But in its full space, taking up the entire canopy of this area, and you look up, all four of you see souls in the treetops. And what it looks like is a pod, maybe a fruit. Within each one of these very large pods is kind of translucent and filled with a red liquid and a vaguely humanoid form inside of it in a fetal position.

No. There's a lot of them though, right? That's a subject.

Atop each one of these fruits is a um a kind of like opening. I think like a like a cranberry or blueberry, has like a little stem kind of a thing. And then from that there is a feeder puppet attached to it. And it's almost like it is tending to its harvest.

With a natural twenty. You see how to put this the right way. You see in the twisted bark itself a an opening that has been unopened. Like if you were to crack a walnut and you see where the seam is that this thing will open up, but it is closed. There is the fruit it is feeding. You with a natural twenty can see almost the energy force, the thunk thunk thunk, coming from each one of these as veins might go to the main tree, this vampiric tree feeding on things, and you realize that the um the main trunk of the tree that looks more like a cocoon than it does a tree itself. And it is pulsating.

I would narrow in on the unopened but openable spot and basically relay what it seems like as Oh, sorry, I'm gonna give you one extra thing too.

You know now exactly 100 souls were taken. You do some counting on this, and you realize that there are only ninety-four of them currently hanging. And at the base of the cocoon area, um you see a little sliver of one of those top pieces of the fruit, but not the others.

They've already been fed in there. I believe this is all a harvest for what lies right there, and I'll point out where it is so that others then can perceive it too, and that might help them see what is in there, or that it's an opening. But I have a strange suspicion that Laryl survived and he's in there.

And this is all feedy that form.

These are all parts of those taken and in some sort of harvestable form to feed what's in there. Can you see it?

As she relays this information, I want you guys to all make a medicine check for me. Uh with advantage because you just described the uh the network that's happening.

Twenty-five. Um people 15 to 20 would know that directly trying to cut down any of these pieces of fruit uh humanoid harvest would probably damage them in some way. Um over a 20, you taking a look at how things are kind of spiderwebbed in with these veins that are pulsing. If you did, you know that the uh embryotic uh fluid sac within it would milk the corpse spirit on the inside.

So you can't touch them per se. Those have to be unharmed. Six of them look like they've already been used and fed. You can see it's hops right there, next to that opening.

Do we see anything that's like trying to protect or defend the tree? What were the things that you said are at the top in their feeder puppets. Feeder puppets. And those are the things that we would be. How many of those do is there one perfect?

So there's ninety-six four of them up there. Yeah, there's six unaccounted.

I'll give you a little bonus to that. It looks like they are connected. Um, that they are unable to unhat uh hatch without having to uh sacrifice the the thing within it.

Okay. So they so per se there's nothing that technically can stop us right there unless they chose to give up their sacrifice. Give up the sacrifice and attack it.

Well, yeah, I I would say that um you've received some pretty strong evidence that this thing is evil, that it wants to to leave this place. Um evil because it's a good thing. I will never I will never railroad players into being like you have to fight every battle. It was evil, but you've received a lot of information that this thing is is is quite evil.

So it killed the humble folk back where it was from, which is why we went there to begin with to save the humble folk and find out why. And it was a tree that was rooted in the ground, which was my grandmother with baby Lariel, going like, let's save Lariel, and then she stabbed herself and Lariel, and that's all we knew.

And the crack opens wider. Did it wider. And you see long fingers, griffiside. It comes out. It is uh it is a fungal in nature. It is half formed. It has kind of like mushroom growing of the side. And um it has multiple heads. It's a good name for it. A small baby's head. In the chest, head. A baby's head.

Um the main thing is that liches are able to gain immortality through a phylactery, a physical object in which they're able to bind their soul to it, and if they are separated from this phylactery, then their corporeal form will become much more vulnerable. If the phylactery remains, they will always be able to take their physical form and rebuild somewhere else as well.

And the uh the clawing lich creature is ready to defend itself against this new combatant, and you see it's like and it like puts its arms down and almost pinned back to take the full damage, and you see a look of concentration on Barylia's face as she holds the beast back to enable um, yeah, uh strike it out a true crit. So on top of being vulnerable from the the phylactery being gone.

Yeah, so 64 points of damage as I start hacking into it, and as I'm like raging, uh this earth real bear is gonna kind of like encompass my whole body as I'm swinging with this axe. And it is a magical axe. Um, and I'm just gonna start hacking nonstop. And then how do you want to do this?

Yeah, you'll just see Borislav keep going. His eyes are completely glowing amber. You don't see any eyes there anymore, and he's just like frothing at the mouth as he keeps hacking this thing until it's just crumbling into the mud and the dirt everything, and gets to a point where he's just breathing super heavy, like looking at the thing.

You're hacking your exclusively a dwarf baby face thing as gurgles, gurgles no more. The head is just caved in. Yeah. The the skeletal top, you're chopping through, it breaks in half at the jaw and goes backwards. And Varilia, her eyes so wanting to die, and you give her this grace that she is seeking and end her as well.

There's also this tree that kind of vibrates above you, and then you see all of those um ones go limp, and then just like the spores that were originally pushed off, they evaporate. Oh happens with including our orange friend. There's no way we could have killed him, so that's decay. It's like hyper decay. He was the real boss.

Interact with them and then's what happens with the spirits next. The um the keepers of these fruit, have you guys seen a Rambutan before? Like a little spiky red fruit. Oh yeah, yeah. This is kind of what it looks like um inside of these, you know, kind of like fruit pods. Um, but what you see is you were seeing like a humanoid uh form just vaguely, like elbows and knees, it's it's in there, and you see it go away. And the the pods with all the juice in it just kind of go slack, you know, like a dehydrated grape. They they raisen up a little bit, right? And you know that that uh form has teleported, is no longer on this plane of existence as it has left this. Yes, exactly. When the the decay of the creature went away, um the enforcement, the thing that was keeping it here tethered has also gone away and it's gone away.
