Shalom to You

SHALOM

Michael Episode 1

Lord grant a framework how to be   A blueprint for my soul   That works me fair and sets me free   In ways that make me whole

The idea of shalom offers principles for Christian living that can be trusted. They cover both the personal and communal. Shalom is God’s thought on how to best face the challenges of every day and enjoy wellbeing.

Shalom

Hello, it’s Michael. Shalom to you! Let’s have a look at the idea of shalom.

Shalom is a Jewish concept that I have long appreciated. When in church, people say ‘peace be with you’, it refers to shalom. But, originally, what is this greeting about?

In wishing someone shalom, I suggest the very best for them. As a greeting, it offers a wide range of possibilities towards wellbeing and peace. Shalom applies at a personal level, with family and friends and societies as a whole; everyone living in harmony and nobody being afraid. It is an all-embracing concept and God’s thought on what people should strive after.

Shalom was the first word Jesus said to his disciples when meeting them, as a group, after his resurrection. His appearance would have been vibrant, fully at rest and embracing. Not only was Jesus wishing his disciples well, he was inviting them towards a vision for life. He was offering to help them towards shalom.

I wrote a little poem about shalom as a way of living.

Lord grant a framework how to be

          A blueprint for my soul

That works me fair and sets me free

In ways that make me whole.

The idea of shalom is not complicated. Seek harmony with others while drawing strength from the Lord. Respect people, offer care and try to understand their outlook on life. Don’t be too hard on people and not on yourself either. Take a breather at times.

My good intentions towards shalom may be tested occasionally, but it is no reason to give up. Its principles are good for the soul. They integrate personhood and build resilience. Others may well respond offering me a sense of shalom in return. Not least the Lord, who is its personification.

Shalom is the wisdom of God in a troubled world. And you would be more a shalom person than you might think. Most people are capable of caring and being considerate. Much of shalom simply involves what kind living is about. I can do it. You can do it. While none of us will be perfect. But ideally, we all should aim for shalom.

In a world filled with messages and desires, what might I best aspire to? It would be shalom. It anchors personhood and is an oasis for the soul. I made shalom my aim years ago and without regret. It’s not that hard being a kind and pleasant person. The benefits are considerable. It is great to have a blueprint for living that brings wellbeing and strengthens the spirit. The Lord takes delight in shalom people irrespective of what they believe. Shalom to you!

Keep it simple - keep it focused I wish you well!
