Shalom to You

FRIENDS

Michael

It’s bad, it’s bad the people say   The news full of bad omen   That’s true, says John, yet I can smile   Today my friends are coming.

Friends make a difference and put a smile on our face. In a world full of agitation that is gold. A different and great friend is Jesus, who is always close by.

  Friends

Hello, it’s Michael. Shalom to you! Friends are good to have. Let’s have a look.

I sat with Jeanne on our balcony looking towards the sea on the horizon. We talked about the news and a world in strife. How easy it was to become burdened, if you let that happen. That for all the opinions we may have about matters, it really makes little difference. The world rolls on and struggles. So, what is a good antidote to the news cycle at a personal level? How best to respond with regard to wellbeing. Jeanne and I discussed that. Soon after, I wrote a little poem about John.

The news full of bad omen

That’s true, says John, yet I can smile

Today my friends are coming.

John refuses to let the world take the smile off his face. He keeps an eye on good things happening nearby and makes sure to enjoy it. His friends are coming for dinner. I’m sure that the next day he is still smiling about it. John understands the value of good relating and how it lifts the spirit. The world at large will be as it is. In his private world, however, John has a say.

Keep an eye out for the ‘good’ in every day. Good people. Good happenings. The enjoyment of art and music. Not then ignoring world affairs. As a Christian I like to know what’s going on. But I refuse to suffer from media overload and its focus on troubles.

I have a friend, who is always close. Not your average friend, but a special one. He is ever present and called Jesus. Those who believe in me, I call them friends, he once said. Always, I keep him in mind. There is nothing really spiritual about it. Nor is it religious. Just brief, mental conversations with him about what confronts me – whether for real, or the ideas I might have.

There will never be a barrier between the Lord and myself unless I would raise one. No matter my state or circumstance. The Lord doesn’t do barriers. Not with anyone, actually. All are invited into his presence. Whatever my mistakes, whatever I may feel, he is near. Never a cold shoulder, but a strong one to lean on. He’s a helper in a difficult world.

My friends are coming, John said. He was looking forward to it. As would I and often do. But that ‘special’ friend I have, he is not someone who comes. Jesus is always near; closer than breathing. A great friend to know and to depend on. A fine friend to have.

Keep it simple – keep it focused. I wish you well.
