SPEAKER_00:Hey guys, welcome to Crunchy Moms Unfiltered, where we talk about all the things that no one else will, uncensored truths, right? So today we're gonna dive into a little bit about us. We're going to start with sharing our stories. This is Brandy, my co-host, and myself, April Locanti, and today's all about Brandy. I wanna know, and I want you guys to know, all about her story, what brought her here, what her why is, and what keeps her going with this much passion in this world that we're in. So Brandy, share with us, what led you here? What guided you to be this passionate about like the Crunchy Mom movement and all the things?
SPEAKER_01:Gosh, I feel like we've been sharing this story so much with all these interviews lately. Like, and I gotta give us a little shout out. April and I were just interviewed by the Washington Post. And that article is going to be out in the next week or two, which is so exciting. But I feel like we keep sharing this. So for me, my story really goes back 12-ish years. And I'm going to start with me and then go into what really, really led me down this path and how I connected the dots. Because I think that's really important. I don't think that we're taught as women to connect the dots as much as we should be. I was 30. So gosh, I'm going to date myself. But so like 13 years ago, I got really sick and I had back to back strep throat, which led to an abscess tonsil, led to me getting my tonsils out and then psoriasis. And this was back in the day when I was a makeup artist. I was a makeup artist for like Mac and NARS and Tarte and all these big brands. And, you know, being covered head to toe in psoriasis. That sucks as it is. But as a makeup artist, I mean, it was on my hands. Like it was awful. And so I went in, they tried to put me on Humira and listen, your girl was not the least bit crunchy back then. Like typically if the doctor gave me anything, an antibiotic, I mean, I was on Percocet for like a decade for endometriosis. Like whatever they told me to take, I took. But they tried to put me on Humira and I just remember my discernment going off and I'm like, okay, I looked it up and saw the side effects and I was like, no, I'm good. And that was the first time I've ever like really questioned things with pharma. And so I was doing red light therapy at the hospital twice a week. And I was like, I'm going to go home and just, I'm going to do a little research. And so I found triggers for psoriasis, like gluten, dairy, stress, alcohol, things like that. So I started cutting those things out of my life and cleaning up my diet a little bit. And my psoriasis healed, you know, I had great success. It healed quickly, but it still wasn't enough to like, I wasn't ready. I wasn't ready to like fully have my eyes open, you know? And
SPEAKER_00:it's way before gluten-free and all that. So it's probably extremely challenging too.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Oh, for sure. It was, I mean, this is, this was like a whole nother world back then. Social media was totally different, which we'll, we'll get into. Yeah. So it, you know, I was vaccinating, my teenagers were vaccinated, all the things. So then fast forward to, I meet Mike and we have our third. And I was, I mean, I was educated enough to like when my first, who's going to be 20 this year was born. I remember making his birthday cake and being like, I don't want him to have like all this bad stuff in the cake. So I made his cake. So I like, I got it, but I didn't. And so with Anya, my youngest, I had a natural childbirth. I did delayed cord clamping. I mean, I breastfed the girl till she was like three. There's animals climbing everywhere. This is real life. It's life. So I vaccinated her. And at her two month well baby visit, she had a reaction that like that evening. And so her leg was red and swollen. We couldn't touch her. She was screaming bloody murder. And so I called the doctor at the after hours and the doctor was like, oh, that's all normal. That's normal. That happens. Give her Tylenol. She'll be fine. So I gave her Tylenol. I had to dangle feed her to nurse her to sleep. She because I couldn't touch her. She slept like something crazy, like eight hours. It's funny because there's a picture I love. I love Facebook memories. And how they come to smack you in the face sometimes.
SPEAKER_00:Right in the
SPEAKER_01:face. So I have this picture that pops up. I think it's like October-ish, every year. And it's that picture of her laying on the bed with the Tylenol syringe. And I was like, hashtag shot. Hashtag Tylenol. I spelled Tylenol wrong. I
SPEAKER_00:know the exact picture. She was in a pink onesie, I think.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, with a little deer on it. Yes, good memory. It just was all bad. So she developed eczema afterwards. And then I went to her four-month appointment. And, you know, my discernment was starting to, like, creep up a little. And I started asking the doctor questions. And she's like, no, it's all normal. That's normal. It's fine. You know, whatever. Convinced me to do the next round of shots. She did not have a reaction like she did the first time. However, she developed– her eczema got worse. She developed ear infections. I knew enough then to not give her antibiotics for those. I think actually– They prescribed the antibiotic. I tried to give her one dose of amoxicillin and she spit it out. And I was like, okay, I didn't want to give that to you anyways. So we treated her ear infections naturally. She's almost nine now. She's never been on an antibiotic.
SPEAKER_00:Didn't
SPEAKER_01:she
SPEAKER_00:get a lazy eye as well?
SPEAKER_01:Yes. So she developed a lazy eye and I had to patch her. She was like a
SPEAKER_00:pirate. Like patching as a baby. Can you
SPEAKER_01:imagine? It's insane. And so... I think that's about a little bit later. Um, so I, I posted in this mom's group. Okay. And it was that, that group was local to Cleveland. And so it was called ironically judge free mom. And so I post now this is, this is nine years ago. I posted in this mom's group and I was like, Hey, I think something like, I think my baby's having a reaction to her vaccine. Now this, I've also had Facebook memories pop up where I was posting, making fun of moms who don't vaccinate. Okay. So for me to be like, I think my kids having a reaction to vaccine, like a big deal. That was a tough pill to swallow.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Right. So I made this post and I'm like, I don't even understand this. Like I just am looking for guidance. And the woman, I think her name was like Colleen or something. She, the woman who owned the group, deleted my post and messaged me. And she's like, you can't talk about vaccines in here. We don't talk about that stuff. And I'm like, but this is a mom's group. I remember arguing with her. It's
SPEAKER_00:like, why? You know, even, like, you weren't bashing. You were inquiring information.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. And I was like a hardcore Provax mom. Right. And so... She's like, well, you just can't, but I can introduce you to one of those moms.
SPEAKER_00:You can't sit with us.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, basically you can't. On Wednesdays, we wear pink, but you can't sit with us. She was like, I know one of those crazy anti-vax moms, and I can introduce you to her if you really want to. And I'm like, I'm desperate. So I said, yeah. The girl's name was Megan. She lives back in Ohio. She was amazing. She literally was just so kind and loving. And taught me how to read inserts and she showed me documentaries and she just led me down this journey. And I remember sitting on the couch in our condo in Green, Ohio, watching these documentaries, absolutely bawling my eyes out, holding my four and a half, five month old baby. And so I went into the six month appointment and I was ready for a fight. Mike actually was hiding his phone, ready to record the doctor. And when it came time to vaccines, because let's be real, while baby visits are vaccine visits, the doctor brought up vaccines and I was like shaking and ripping in sweat. I'm like, we're not going to be doing those. And she was like, oh, okay, well, can I ask you why? And I honestly don't remember what I said. It was like Ace Ventura, like. Let me tell you why not. It just came out. And she sat there and listened to me. And I think I might have been crying. I mean, literally dripping in sweat. And she listened. And then she's like, well, you sound like you really educated yourself on this topic. So I'm going to respect your decision. And I was like, Mike, you can put your phone away. I think we're good here. And so not many moms don't have it. Many moms had a much worse experience. scenario with their doctor. So I do feel really blessed that she respected me enough, but that was my story. And so, you know, then I started connecting those dots, crazy how that happened.
SPEAKER_02:And
SPEAKER_01:I fell so far down the hole. I still never came out of it. And I went back to my medical records and I looked back to that whole strep throat psoriasis thing when I was 30, And wouldn't you know it, I had gotten a flu shot like a couple weeks prior. But nobody ever thought to ask those things. And when you look at inserts, everything that I was dealing with, that Anya dealt with, lazy eyes, ear infections, strep throat, psoriasis, all those kinds of things are literally listed in inserts.
SPEAKER_00:My son had back to back to back ear infections his whole first two years of his life. Horrible. And
SPEAKER_01:they never tell you that. They never connect those dots for you. And so when we were moving to Florida six years ago, I found my teenager, she's actually going to be 18 this month, I found her medical records in a box in our basement. And this will kind of lead into our next, I think our next topic, but um i started going through her medical records because at this point i was like hungry for information like i wanted to learn everything i wanted to understand everything going on in our lives
SPEAKER_00:that's where like i'm at i'm like tell me more tell me more tell me more
SPEAKER_01:like you and it's it's like one thing leads to the next and one rabbit hole you don't come out of a rabbit hole it's like another one
SPEAKER_00:it's like the wall of a detective and you got the string to the string to the string and you're
SPEAKER_01:like It's funny, but it's true.
SPEAKER_00:It's actually the sad truth. We can laugh about it, but it's so true. It's almost not funny, right?
SPEAKER_01:No, and so that's, again, our whole point with this podcast is providing that space so you don't have to go searching like we did. So I found my daughter's medical record. She was born into the military. Her dad was Special Forces. And so I looked at every time she got a shot. Again, I did what the doctor told us. Every single vaccine, I mean, I had to highlight her out. Like, I was serious. Every single vaccine, she was in and out of the doctor's office. Ear infections, strep throw, all the things. She had a flu shot in October. I think she was like, she might have been two at this point. Wow.
SPEAKER_00:Two.
SPEAKER_01:Two. She had a flu shot in October, and she was in and out of the doctor and the ER forever. with flu through January. Of course. It makes me so mad. I know. That I didn't like, I didn't connect any of these things. And every time she had an ear infection or strep throat, I put her on antibiotics.
SPEAKER_00:But you really were pro-vaccinator, like pro-vaccinator because I wasn't anti-vax, but my discernment has gone off since day one. So I never did the flu shot ever. I'm like, no, thank you. I never
SPEAKER_01:questioned. Never questioned a single vaccine, ever.
SPEAKER_00:Which is like most people, so I completely understand.
SPEAKER_01:Yep, so that video where I was looking at Kaylee's medical records was the first time I went viral. And it had like, it was like 90,000 views or 90,000 shares or something like that. And it was the first time I ever went viral on social media. And I don't know what possessed me to go live, but...
SPEAKER_00:And you were crying the first time you were viral and you're crying. I was
SPEAKER_01:crying. I hadn't washed my hair in forever. I think I was even in like pajamas.
SPEAKER_00:That's how it always happens. Totally. Oh, so. So pretty much by accident at that point, you kind of started advocating, right? Is what it sounds like. You went live, you went viral. What led you to kind of like, you have a really strong audience now, right? You have like a really good support systems on a lot of your social media. I mean, you have 90,000 followers on TikTok. You have 135 or more thousand on Instagram. Pretty sure all your Facebooks, you're over 30,000, 50,000, whatever. What led you down the building online stage of your life that ties into this, if that makes any sense?
SPEAKER_01:No, it does. So it's funny. It was network marketing. So it's funny how it's woven. It's woven. It's woven. It's woven throughout my life, but I wasn't ready for it at these times. And this is another episode, another day, another story. Right, right. When I was married and I left my ex-husband, my mother-in-law was obsessed with Sensi, which is so funny because I would never allow Sensi anywhere near my home now. But my mother-in-law was obsessed with Sensi and she had, I was a stay-at-home mom, actually wasn't allowed to make my own money. And another story. And she was like, you need to meet my Sensi girl. Oh my gosh, you'll love her. You should sell this and I'll buy it from you. I'm like, Okay, so I started selling Scentsy and the day I left my ex-husband, I drove from Colorado to Ohio and then it was like November, it was around Thanksgiving. Oh, I left him on my birthday. It was my birthday in November and I had a bunch of Scentsy orders that were local
SPEAKER_00:that I had. Are you a Sagittarius? I'm a Scorpio. A Scorpio, okay.
SPEAKER_01:I'm like right by the cusp
SPEAKER_00:though. Off
SPEAKER_01:topic. Off topic. So I drove around sobbing with my minivan packed of all my stuff And two goldfish and a frog in an iced tea pitcher.
SPEAKER_00:Two goldfish and a frog.
SPEAKER_01:In an iced tea pitcher.
SPEAKER_00:Every time we tell the story, I learn more. I
SPEAKER_01:mean, it doesn't... Well, and the goldfish... One of the goldfish died and we got it over the Ohio line. That's another story for another day. But I was dropping off scentsy orders on people's porches, sobbing on my way to drive cross-country. So... But I fully I wasn't fully like I didn't even get the network marketing side of things. I didn't know what I was doing. I was just having fun. I went to a convention, whatever. So I get home and my girlfriend, another Megan. At this point, I'm in my own. I'm in like a condo in Medina. I'm like on my own. We were having a couple bottles of wine and she convinces me to buy Mona Vee. And I bought, I spent like$400 that I had no business spending.
SPEAKER_00:A buy-in pack.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, on a box of MonaVie that I never sold. I moved it like between like three houses over the years and then finally tossed it. I think that had to do with Robbie Flair. I feel like Robbie Flair was behind that. That's
SPEAKER_00:so funny.
SPEAKER_01:Right? So then, so I was just like, I don't like network marketing. So I got... I took this position with Montrose auto group in Ohio, doing their social media and their marketing. And the guy that hired me, we were, we were at lunch and we were negotiating salary. And I was asking for more money. And he's like, well, this is our budget, but we're part of this MLM. And he starts going off and he's like, we'll pay to sponsor you in and buy you the big pack. And I'm like, well, no, like it's all I'm going to
SPEAKER_00:get.
SPEAKER_01:So, so it, they were actually on Mike's team and some of Mike's best friends. That's how I met Mike.
SPEAKER_00:That's so funny.
SPEAKER_01:I was in his downline, met him through these guys. And so Mike has been in the industry. I mean, he was born in the industry. It's other than the Marines. And now he went from being an MLM to being a private investigator, which is amazing.
SPEAKER_00:Gotta love it. Gotta love it. None of these guys
SPEAKER_01:just aren't for us. No, no. We were like, we can't be normal. So yeah, I went from like not understanding the industry to being with someone who was like well-connected, opening countries, like working with owners. And so that's
SPEAKER_00:actually what led us to...
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, it was our whole lives. That's what led us to Florida. We moved out here working with a network marketing company that we opened Mexico and the Philippines with this company. So I've been... in the top 10 of a company. We launched our own company, which I don't recommend. I don't know what we were thinking, but it was such amazing experience. I learned so much. So I consult in the industry. I've been on all sides of network marketing.
SPEAKER_00:So what exactly pulled you away from network marketing? What made you walk away from the top 1% of the company?
SPEAKER_01:So that specific company, I got sick with mold. And so I was already super crunchy and I was knowledgeable about a lot of things. And I knew that this company's products weren't like the best. They weren't super clean. And so I, I, there was some, I didn't promote some I did. And then our home that we were living in had mold. And most people don't realize that the 70% of homes have mold. And we were living in Florida, which makes it even worse. And so I, We were in this gorgeous five bedroom house with a pool and a gated community. We were renting it. And there was a leak in the roof that they weren't taking care of properly. And so we had mold growing behind the walls and didn't know it. And this was during 2020 when we were all at home. And so I started getting really sick. I lost like significant amounts of hair. I could barely walk up our stairs. I mean, it was bad. I was really, really sick. And That made me– I went on an AIP diet, and I started really deep diving into ingredients. And I'll never forget it. I was floating in the pool with Mike. After we'd moved out of that house, we were in an Airbnb because of the mold, trying to figure out what to do. And we were floating in the pool, and I was like, I can't sell these products anymore. And he's like, what? And I'm like, I ethically, now that I know– citric acid and natural flavors and this ingredient and this ingredient, I can't sell these products. So I don't know what to tell you, but we got to figure something out. And so that's, I walked away. I walked away from this business that we had that was an incredible business because I couldn't, if I personally couldn't take something and I knew it wasn't right for my body and it wasn't healthy, I couldn't get on social media and tell you to buy these products for you or your family.
SPEAKER_00:Of course not. And, and I mean, at one point you said like you were making 50,000 a month, like, and you walked away from a real business.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. I mean, our highest month was like 55 or 56. Like,
SPEAKER_00:yeah. It's so crazy to me. I mean, it's amazing. It's a blessing, but it just shows your authenticity and you know, that you just, You stand behind what you believe. You walk the walk, you talk the talk. Like you don't just put something on social media and then go light a cigarette. Like, you know what I mean? So I think that's huge.
SPEAKER_01:No, there's a lot of people. There's a lot of people that do that. And there is a company out there that's really big in our space. It's crazy. And these women think that their products are non-toxic and they're not. And they're believing the Kool-Aid the company is selling them and they will fight you to the death. trying to defend ingredients that are crap. And it's like, I just, I just couldn't do that. I couldn't do that.
SPEAKER_00:I'm the same exact way. And it's, it's, it's so hard because like everything is like that. So when you first start getting into it, you're like, ah, like we were in a company together that it wasn't as clean as we thought it was either. So I was like me deep into that. And I'm like, what do I do? It's like, That's when we learned about branding yourself, right? We learned about branding yourself. That's a whole different topic. So tell us a little bit more about the mold. I've been going through some stuff. Tell us a little bit about how that's affecting you now, how that got you to where you are today. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:So that was a really eye-opening journey. I never knew mold could make you sick like that. And going back and thinking about things, growing up, my basement in Ohio was was so damp and it had tile floors and it would flood. And I remember there being mold in the corners. And I remember there being mushrooms growing. We would find mushrooms.
SPEAKER_00:My childhood house had that in the bathroom.
SPEAKER_01:Like in how anyone, my parents never thought like, Hey, this is a problem. It was just, it was normal. It was just normal. So going back, like, and then I lived in Hawaii for like, you know, on and off for almost seven years. So it's like, I wonder how much mold I was exposed to in Hawaii. So I think we're exposed a lot more than we realize. And I think we're so, we've normalized not feeling good that we just, we justify like, oh, I just don't feel good. Like this is just, it's just normal. This is how I feel. And it's mold, it's food, it's all the things. And so I got really sick. We found the mold and, right before we moved out, actually what had happened was this was up in our office. The wall was discoloring. Then it was a blessing. Water started coming up from our floorboard in the kitchen, all the way through the kitchen, the laundry room, our dining room. And so there was water coming up. We had these gorgeous dark wood floors. Water was coming up and bubbling. And so there was a leak in the foundation. So we literally had water coming in two different ways and so we ended up moving out when we moved our furniture out to find the picture when we moved the furniture out of our office I used to get these date boxes that Mike and I used to do and it's like a date night in a box and one of them was a painting night and he had painted this beach scene this was like 10 years ago and he painted this beach scene and he's like we're gonna move to Florida one day and it was like he and it happened and so we had this beach painting that mike made it looked like a five-year-old made it but it was super cute we had this beach painting up on our desk in our office well it had slipped down between the desk and the wall and so when we moved our desk the painting fell and it had been stuck to the wall with mold and we like
SPEAKER_00:we had oh my gosh it was just riddled with mold everywhere
SPEAKER_01:that whole they had to gut like half the upstairs i found out after we moved out so For me, Mike, when he tells the stories, like I thought you had cancer. My hair was falling out. My skin started aging. Chronic fatigue to literally, I couldn't walk up our stairs. It would take me like, like I'd have to walk up a few stairs and stop and then go. And I couldn't carry laundry up the stairs. Like it was a nightmare. I was having digestive issues where my stomach would bloat really bad. Every time I would eat, I would look pregnant. And then Anya was like six, I think five or six at the time. No, she would have been, she was probably like four. She was having really bad dark circles under her eyes, behavioral issues. I had this thing where if I tried to take a deep breath, it would like catch in my chest. She was having the breathing things like that. Stomach aches every time she would eat, behavioral issues. My teenager had some neurological things going on. And so we, I got tested and found high levels of like three different types of mold in my body.
SPEAKER_00:Wow. That's insane. I mean, I completely understand, but that sounds like that house was riddled and it's crazy because by the time you take certain, like I did the blood test for mold as well and they find past mold exposure, like from when me and you were talking about mushrooms on the floor, well, they could find that from like when you're a child, like colonizing in your body. So it's just insane. So it pretty much like your story is wild. I've been following it forever. So I love sharing it. I feel like it helps empower people. But what would you say to the mom who is just starting out right now? Maybe is having some health issues. Maybe he's questioning vaccines. Maybe he just doesn't know what to do. What would your message be to them? That's the whole point of this podcast we created, right? Is to speak to our past selves. So what would you say you would like to say to your past self?
SPEAKER_01:You know, I would encourage myself to keep asking questions, keep digging for information, trust your gut. You know, when I was talking about the vaccines, my sister's a nurse and her youngest is like six or eight months older than anya and anya had the reaction and so then she's like well maybe i should look into this too she went into the hospital to ask questions on vaccines and i went to other parents whose kids were injured and i went to the inserts and i watched the documentaries one of us vaccinates one of us doesn't one of our kids well she's got two kids someone's kids are always on antibiotics someone's never been on one and so I guess my advice would be if something is going off in your gut, if that discernment is saying something, you need to honor it. You need to listen to it. You need to not care what other people think. I think that's a big one. Like we were asked that the other day. We receive a lot of pushback, people losing friendships, losing social media friends, getting nasty messages, like literally all the things for speaking up. You don't have to speak up on this topic, but... You have to not care what other people think about your health decisions for yourself, your children. Like we have to be our own advocates and we have to advocate for our children.
SPEAKER_00:So good. So true. I agree with everything. So, well, I won't, we won't keep everyone for too much longer. I just wanted to give you guys a little bit about the history of why we do what we do. Right. And Here we can talk about it, where on social media, we can't. Every time we say the word vaccination, our account is flagged for six months. So I'm on like my fifth Instagram.
SPEAKER_01:I have two Facebooks. TikTok is banned. Like it's just, it's wild.
SPEAKER_00:It's a wild ride. So with that being said, that's exactly why we did this. I love, I love your story. I think it's going to help so many people. And we're just super excited that you found us, that you're here.
