California’s Price Gouging Laws: What Landlords in Newport Beach & Costa Mesa Need to Know!

CRITICAL UPDATE – As with many laws, this topic is evolving. On February 4, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom issued Executive Order N-17-25, which modifies California’s price gouging protections and changes two key topics in the article below: 1) “Housing” now applies to leases of ANY duration, not just under 12-months; and 2) various zip codes are now exempt from the HUD calculations.
