In this episode, I contrast two traditions that shape this season in Norway. Halloween on October 31 brings costumes, door-to-door visits, and the classic trick-or-treat phrase. All Saints Day, observed the first Sunday in November, invites a quieter vocabulary—candles at the cemetery, memories of loved ones. Halloween took hold in Norway during the 1990s while All Saints Day remained an older, less common tradition with Catholic roots.

Using a clear, repeatable structure—slow sentences, English translation for grounding, then natural-speed Norwegian—to help you hear every sound, catch the rhythm, and build confidence without getting overwhelmed.

Hi, hi. Halloween is just around the corner, so I thought to myself, why not make a listening episode about Halloween? Because maybe you've noticed that in Norway Halloween has become quite uh popular during the last couple of years. It wasn't when I was young, but now it seems like everybody's celebrating Halloween. So why not have a small chat about that? Um, before we get started, I just wanted to give you uh some tips on how to work on this listening exercise and also how it is structured. This exercise can be useful for you no matter your level. If you're a total beginner, you know no words in Norwegian, it can still be very valuable for you. Okay, first of all, structure. I will divide this listeningslash pronunciation exercise in three parts. In the first part, I will read in Norwegian first, very slowly, sentence by sentence, one sentence in Norwegian, and when I say Norwegian, I mean bookmol with eastern accent. And then I will translate that into English, sentence by sentence, and then I will go back to the sentence again in Norwegian, still slow, and then one other time fast or normal tempo. So slower region, English, slower region, normal tempo, Norwegian, and I will do that for every sentence until the end. Second part will be without any translation, normal speed. Last part will be without any translation, normal speed, but this time with Bergensk accent, because that's where I come from. So I always want to include that. In all of the three parts, I always leave enough time for repetition. If you're uninterested in the English translation, either because you understand the sentences, you or you want to try to understand them without any help, or because you're not interested in interested in the translation, you only want to work on your pronunciation, then I suggest you skip the first part and go directly to the second one. If you find the second part or third part too hard because it's too fast, then go back to the first part with the slow pronunciation first. This can be done when you're outside walking, you do not need to have a text, the text under your eyes since the sentences are quite short.
