Beyond Poor Me: Choosing Your Path When Life Gets Hard
Finding strength during life's hardest moments often comes down to the simplest of actions - movement. This deeply personal episode explores how fitness became a lifesaver during periods of intense struggle, offering practical wisdom for anyone facing mental health challenges.
The transformative power of consistent physical activity stands at the center of this conversation. From losing 50 pounds through a workplace Weight Watchers program to discovering the joy of home workouts and CrossFit, we learn how even 20-30 minutes of daily movement can completely reshape your mental landscape. "You never feel bad after you exercise," becomes a guiding principle worth embracing - especially on days when motivation is nowhere to be found.
Beyond structured workouts, simple practices like lunchtime walks provide crucial mental space for processing emotions and finding clarity. The episode tackles the dangerous trap of "wallowing in sorrows" and offers actionable alternatives that have proven effective through real-life application. With vulnerable honesty, we explore those inevitable moments when tears come, and the powerful choice that follows - to wipe them away, get moving, and choose your own path forward. Whether you're struggling with grief, stress, or simply feeling stuck, this conversation reminds us that while we can't control everything in life, we always maintain the power to take the next step. What daily practice will help you choose a better path forward today?
Okay, guys, this is Heather and I am going to go ahead and put this one out here. My sister, jennifer, who you met the last two, has been sick and so we need to record our questionnaires the both of us, which we really thoroughly enjoyed. But new app and user errors it only captured my speaking and not hers, so we got to redo that one. So I do apologize and she's been sick. So today I'm going to talk about mindset and what has helped me throughout the years on overcoming those bad days that we all deal with. So my biggest number one help has been fitness. Now, am I fit and eat healthy and in shape 100%? Absolutely not. But at work we started Weight Watchers where we could go weekly check in and run the game plan throughout the week. That would allow us reimbursement through work, etc. So I got to doing that and went down like 50 pounds and 50 pounds and and that is what has helped, I think keep me going in ways, because you never feel bad after you exercise. I mean that's a given. No matter if you hate it, you go, you exercise, it gets you pumped up and you're gonna feel better. I started a couple of groups online that were workout programs. So I've actually done home workout programs for probably five plus years and I really enjoy it. I've not been able to get anybody in my house on board with me, but that's okay, I enjoy it. 20-30 minutes I did take a break and I went and did CrossFit here in Sedalia. Absolutely loved it. It's a challenge every day, no matter what, and you feel like you've been ran over, but it definitely keeps you going and motivated. And I gave that up when we had a few family things going on and change of jobs etc. And I do at home workouts again. So I do enjoy it. I follow the company first form and I love doing their. They have workouts, they have advisors, one-on-one advisors. I can track my macros and it's absolutely life-changing. And I don't tell you that just to be like, hey, sign up. I tell you that because they do, monday through Friday morning, 30 minute videos on all topics. It's not only you know, buy our products, do this, do that. It's not only you know, buy our products, do this, do that. It's mental, physical, food, everything, all topics, hormones. But the mindset is truly can be opened up and changed by listening to different people talk and especially people who is experienced in it. So I highly recommend their app if you're looking for a fitness challenge, just something that has truly gave me the confidence to make changes in my life for the better that I wouldn't have done before, and I can't I mean, I'll always tell everybody about that app and those people because they're 100% USA, they're there for their customers and they're not out to just sell products. So I think that fitness and their first form is forever changed my life.
Speaker 1:So I try to work out three to five times a week and I actually do Mackenzie Wells workout program currently. I bought her year membership and it's literally 20 to 30 minute workouts Monday through Friday. She has a Saturdays listed if you want to do them, and it's amazing. I mean you can make it as easy or hard as you want, but it gives you the confidence.
Speaker 1:And walking sorry, walking and working out is a big stress reliever for me. I could feel like not walking and I've walked on my lunch break for years, even when I worked at the hospital, and I do it here at home and walking a good 20 to 30 minutes a day just gives you that away where you can think you can really relieve stress and then, if you work out, you again, you never feel bad after a workout. You might be tired, you might be feel like you got hit by a bus, but your mind is not going to be like, damn it, I shouldn't have worked out. No, it always pumps you up. So fitness is what keeps me going and I highly, highly, highly Fitness is what keeps me going and I highly, highly, highly. I can't stress it enough because if I get stressed out where I don't have patience or I'm just at that point of breaking and I just want to cry and I want to think about all my life, past history, things I can't even. They're out of my control and I can't change. I can take a walk and feel better, or I can work out and feel better, and that is, I think, what keeps me going. I also like to read. I don't read as much as I used to, but I do enjoy reading. Now, if anything, I download the book and listen to it, but I enjoy reading as it's an out and it gets your mind open and busy on other things and anything to keep your mind busy.
Speaker 1:If you sit in the house and you sit in front of the TV and you just sit and think and wallow in your sorrows. You're not going to feel good and, honestly, your body's just going to go downhill where, if you can do some weight training, you are building your bones, muscles up and it will help you through the rest of your life. And you know, there's people 80 years old out there doing workouts. So you are capable. So don't feel like, oh, I'm too old, you know I can't do it. You can grab canned goods or I've used water bottles when we're at a hotel and do my exercises and, honestly, bottles when we're at a hotel and do my exercises and, honestly, I get just as good a workout out of it. So it's kind of mind mindset.
Speaker 1:You have to get your mind out of the poor me Because, honestly, if I just sat in poor me, I could just sit and cry and not even want to get up and that's no way to live a life. So, again, it's up to you to change it. Like I tell my sister, they chose their path, I will choose mine and that's why I choose to get up and keep going. Now, some days it really does suck and I'm sorry to say that, but it just does. I mean I think I had a day a few days ago, I just cried and you know what? I wipe it up, I go for my walk and and I get over it. Just because we don't have a choice, we have to keep going. But if I can give you any piece of advice, of something that's helped me work out, exercise, eat healthier, walk, do whatever you can to keep your mind busy and don't just set and wallow in your sorrow, because that will not get you going, that will not get you motivated and it doesn't help you. So choose to do better, choose to change your ways, believe in yourself and keep your head up, because that's what we have to do in this life to keep going. So with that, hopefully my sister Jennifer will be feeling better and we can rerecord that last episode and get it out there and get going. But I just wanted to give you a little few notes to take what has helped me throughout the years.
Speaker 1:So please listen like share. We don't get the word out unless we share it. If you want to tell a story, it doesn't have to be suicide, it doesn't have to be loss. It can be any struggle that you have, because you know what, if you have it, somebody else has it. We are all more alike than we are, different in multiple ways than we realize. So email us, text us. You can send back feedback. But again, use your resources. Ask for help when you need it, call, reach out. If you need assistance, call 911, reach out out for help. Don't harm yourself or others. And again, remember we are here for you, others are here for you. Like I tell my kids every day be good, do good, save lives. So thank you guys for listening and we will talk to you next time.
