How DJs Read the Room and Rock Your Wedding
We dive into the world of wedding DJing with Javier from SeaWest Entertainment, exploring everything from outrageous song requests to the art of reading a dance floor. Javier shares his professional insights on music selection, revealing that minimal song requests are actually the mark of a well-prepared DJ who understands their audience.
• Javier recalls his weirdest song requests, including "Deep Throat" at a lesbian wedding and a Russian EDM track
• Good DJs receive few requests because they prepare thoroughly and understand their audience
• Wedding DJs must profile their audience based on who will actually be on the dance floor
• Successful DJing requires balancing music that appeals to diverse age ranges and preferences
• Understanding demographics helps DJs create the perfect atmosphere without awkward moments
• Different music preferences emerge based on age groups and cultural backgrounds
If you're planning a wedding, make sure to communicate with your DJ about who will be dancing, not just who's attending. This information is crucial for creating the perfect atmosphere for your special day.

Hey queens, welcome back to another episode of the Daily Buzz. Today we are here with Javier from SeaWest Entertainment to help answer these questions. So, javier, real talk. What is the weirdest song request that you've gotten mid-set?
Speaker 2:I'm going to have to think so shoot.
Speaker 3:She's like do-do-do.
Speaker 2:No, I'm just kidding. Oh, another inappropriate song Cupcake Deep Throat. What Wicked song Cupcake Deep Throat. What Wicked song. Cupcake Deep Throat, deep Throat by Cupcake. Cannot repeat the lyrics on this segment part, but it was a lesbian wedding. They liked WAP, they liked all that.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I'm here for it.
Speaker 2:Let's do it it was fun though it's fun when, like, the crowd just wants that nasty song.
Speaker 3:He's like they just want to get dirty.
Speaker 2:It's just fun Cause it's like people are letting loose and having fun, but it's like inappropriate.
Speaker 3:Yeah, but if, like the whole crowd's like that, I feel like, then it's fine.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:Like, if like somebody was like what the heck Like, it's not fun. But if the whole crowd was just like you know what?
Speaker 2:Just get dirty, or recently I had this Russian like EDM song that only the groomsmen like, but the bride told me I had to play it and they rushed up like halfway through and they're like yo, yo, there's this weird Russian song. I don't know if you're gonna have it. I'm like, bro, I got you right now. So I like let it like kind of die down for a second, like at the end of that song I was playing, I was like alright, everybody, this song goes out straight to our groomsmen and I dropped it because it's so like what the heck is happening. But they got so lit and everybody was like jumping on having fun. I don't know how the song goes or what it's called, but it was fun.
Speaker 1:Was it in English or was it in Russian?
Speaker 2:Oh, I was going to say Actually, no, the lyrics were in English. It was like this is how we dance in the Russian discotheque.
Speaker 3:Wow, okay, I wish I honestly hate EDM music so much. I'm like I don't like it at all, like people who go to raves. I'm just like how do you enjoy? I love EDM, I don't. Maybe it's the millennial in you, okay.
Speaker 1:So I'm told alright, grace, I think my yeah she's called you old she's the same age as my sister. My sister's not old she thinks her sister's old no, I don't anyway alright. Well, I think that wraps up our daily. It was just one question, yeah it was one question and Grace brought some haterade, so it's fine.
Speaker 3:Do you feel like you see a lot of inappropriate songs at weddings? Requested?
Speaker 2:no honestly, I think if you don't get a lot of song requests, you are a good DJ. I don't get a lot of song requests. You are a good DJ, I don't get a lot of song requests anymore because you prepare.
Speaker 2:I always go back to demographics. If you're a DJ listening to this, or you're a couple planning your wedding, think about who's going to be dancing on the dance floor and tell your DJ that, because it'll help them to profile. A lot of DJing is just profiling and thinking about who's in front of you and what they might like. A lot of assumptions, right. That's not okay in day-to-day life, but as a DJ, that's your reality. But with that in mind, if you know, well, shoot, we're going to have a giant age range. We're going to have two-year-olds all the way up to 80.
Speaker 2:Well, not the two-year-old to the 80-year-old are probably going to be on the dance floor. Of course, you want to play music throughout the event that's accessible for all, especially when open dancing starts. You want to see grandma on the dance floor. You want to see that baby breaking it down. When it comes to the folks that are actually going to be dancing, that's what your DJ needs to know, and it's also helpful to know that ahead of time, before the open dancing actually starts, just so you could be prepared. It's always about being prepared.
Speaker 1:I was a Boy Scout, so yeah, okay, so you're the DJ here. If you had to pick one song for each of us to get the party going, what song would you choose?
Speaker 2:Like a song that you would dance to.
Speaker 1:Yeah, like if you were like okay, I need to get Grace on the dance floor, I have to get Kelsey on the dance floor, what song would you choose? And we're not dancing together.
Speaker 3:You have to think two songs. We gave away too much.
Speaker 2:Oh man, I should have put it on my. If I had my computer out in front of me, that would help me a little bit, just because that's like where I store all this stuff. Okay, I'm just going to profile you based off of what you said so far.
Speaker 1:Yeah, he's the profiler and I don't think that you are but you strike me as like somebody who's you don't like to go to the club.
Speaker 2:You don't like to do all this crazy stuff. You seem like you would like the regular party hits. You said you like September, so maybe you would like just the generic party songs that people say at a classic wedding. Unfortunately, kelsey, I know you from before and I saw what you got down to, so I know you like that 2000 stuff. I know you're getting crazy and crunk, I know you like that crunk.
Speaker 2:You don getting crazy and crunk. I know you like that crunk, so you don't like yeah by Usher. But maybe back in the day before you saw all these weddings, maybe you would have liked that song, maybe you would have liked like some crunk.
Speaker 1:Good job Now our producer?
Speaker 2:no idea, I feel like he likes rock, indie.
Speaker 1:I don't even know. I don't know our producer is in, I know we're not showing him, but yeah we actually don't know.
Speaker 3:We don't know, we don't even know.
Speaker 2:The secret. That's what I mean. He's like he has a good selection of music. He does Yep, but right now Maybe Taylor Swift.
Speaker 1:No, maybe For her. I mean, yeah, I like Taylor Swift yeah, she's good, but I'm not like die hard. All right, I love it. I love it for me. That is your daily buzz.
