@HailOnThreePod
How would you describe the culture surrounding this football team? You know, the culture is actually damn good. He's got a side, he's into the end zone in the touchdown game, decider inside the touchdown for two, and the win has rejected by Bon and Denver has won nine in a.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Welcome to another episode of the Hail on Free podcast. I am your stand-in host Lee, coming to you live from Siberia, I mean Chicago. how's it going over there, sir?
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Good. Um, Lee looks very wrapped up. On this early Chicago morning, Lee. Um, yeah, I'm, I'm fine. It's a little bit chilly here, but you look very cold. So tell me a bit about what's going on there.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Winter has hit, winter is coming, winter has
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:So maybe, did I mention on Friday I was staying local for Thanksgiving this year and I'm very pleased that was the decision that was made because on Saturday we actually had record. It's snowfall for a November day in Chicago, which is obviously saying something. So about a foot of the white stuff dumped Saturday early morning, and it's been very cold ever since. So it's all still out there and it will be for the remainder of the week, I should imagine. Um, yeah. So just a reminder that we. Uh, thrust into winter rather quickly around these parts. But, you know, I like the seasons and all that, and the city can still survive and run on it. But yeah, I just, uh, maybe it hit me a little bit unprepared as we get into early December here, so we'll be bundled up for the foreseeable feature as temperatures hover around the minus 10 centigrade.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:we do love some weather chat on here. It's interesting about, uh, you know, there's a lot of chat about how hot you are in the summer and now here we are. How time flies. Lee is, uh, all bundled up. Little cold boy.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, I, to be fair, I, I do like the seasons and how festive it is, but obviously, Chicago is known for its rather harsh winters. It does sound like if the weather people are correct, we might be in for a extra snowy one this year, which has, you know, some pluses in terms of some, you know, scenic kind of stuff. But it can be also be rather harsh and by the time you get to mid-January, you are pretty much over it, but. We'll see, we'll see. We'll see how it goes. I'll be, I'll be back in the, you know, hot UK for Christmas anyway, where I'm sure it'll be about
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Of course.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:and
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:gray.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Just mild and boring.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, not really, not really too festive. The last few Christmases, um, I've had over there. Do you, do you have any snow these days in
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:can't really, I as a, as a kid, I remember all the, you, you had days off school and all sorts,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I don't, I don't think that's a thing anymore. I dunno. Not that I, not that I recall anyway. Certainly not in London anyway. But, um,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:yeah, you may have noticed Josh isn't here.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Josh is not here, so I've had to try and fill in at the last minute, this early, early December morning. So this, this will be an interesting
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:You,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:because
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:you're also the only one that watched the game in f Well, has watched the game at all. Really. I, I sort of did, but we'll touch on that.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:yeah, exactly. This will be an interesting one because James kind of woke up and watched some of the game. Um, obviously I watched it. Watched it in full, but a lot to talk about in terms of the game from my, per my perspective. Um, but yeah, in terms of the, the weather. One last thing on that. It will be, it will, it will. Well, I thought, I think it's really good viewing for, for football fans personally. I think that phrase football weather is one that the rings true. And nowadays, you know, all these teams, Buffalo next season, right? Bears have got their plans in, so all these teams are gonna have stadiums that are gonna. I we're not gonna see this probably in 10, 15 years time. So enjoy this slate of NFL'cause I'm sure over the next six weeks there'll be some, some weather games. I did, I did take a look at, uh, a college game, Northwestern. We're playing Illinois. Locally here on Saturday, which was quite just quite fun. Remind me, I used to play in Madden when you used to be able to set the weather, weather conditions and I, I always used to just do snow. to just be fun. Um, but that would be a thing of the past scene, right? With all these d stadiums, I guess makes sense.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:when you get that late lake effect snow that you can get in Chicago and Buffalo, it does make, um, football rather interesting. I, I like the, um. When you see the Bills fans, they're trying to shovel the stadium so they can actually get the game on. It's always quite, quite fun. Um, anyway, enough weather talk, I'm sure.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:So, so the commanders played one hell of a football game on Sunday night, as I'm sure everyone listening is aware. Uh, they lost the game. They lost the game by a point to the way they lost the Chicago game by a point on the last play of the game. But a lot to take from this one. Before I get into it, James, you wanna tell me how you watched the game? Because I was sitting there glued to my screen on this back and forth, fourth quarter, and then suddenly I saw your, your name pop up on my phone, at which I was like, well, it's about 11:00 PM central time, so you must have woken up.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah, I just thought I'd give you a little, little surprise. Yeah, no, I, I woke up, I dunno, for what reason Must have known something big was happening, uh, in this game. So, yeah, I woke up, rolled over and just, well, I checked the score first to see if we were getting blown out and I just thought, right, it's a close game. So I sat in bed on my phone watching it, uh, through to the end. So I think it's quite a long end to the quarter actually, wasn't it? There's a lot. A lot going on. So yeah, caught the last 45 minutes, uh, or so, I guess, um, most of the, most of the fourth quarter and obviously overtime as well. So, yeah. Uh, then couldn't get back to sleep after that because, you know, frustrating not to come wherever, wind. So, uh, yeah. What should have just been a normal night's sleep turning sort of like three hour sleep, really? But, um. Yeah, obviously you watched the whole thing. How did the game really start? I've not had time to go back and watch it. I've obviously watched most of the fourth quarter and saw some pretty good stuff, to be honest, and some bad things, and obviously, um, some big plays being made by both teams and obviously a big dramatic end and some, I mean, I couldn't believe what I was seeing from the officials. I didn't have the sound on, um, on my phone, but. It. So I wasn't really getting the full idea of maybe what was going on, what's been said. And I was thinking, am I missing something here? Some of these calls are just absolutely crazy. Um, but yeah, maybe you can tell me a bit more about how the game started and kind of your thoughts on some of those refereeing decisions down the stretch.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah. I mean, firstly, why do you do it? So why do you do it to yourself? That's brutal. Just waking up like,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:on purpose. It's not on purpose, I dunno, you know?
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:You're, you're probably almost hoping that you see something like
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Well.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Denver
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I mean, yeah. I mean if I, if, if I, yeah, if I wake up at four o'clock and I know, I know my head, the game's like happening, like I, I can't get back to sleep anyway. I'd have to check. So, um, if we were getting blown out, would've been an easy rollback to sleep sort of thing, but.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:yeah, this is the kind of elite, um, analysis we have when we are free and 10, and we have Sunday night, Sunday night football. But no, I obviously watched all of the games, so I, it was quite funny that I saw you awake and get frustrated. Um, some of the, some of the stuff going on, but yeah. But the game started and I thought we were gonna have a decent night really, because it just looked like we had the energy about us. the buy, which was good. I'm, I mean, we both called it close games, right? I, I'm not a hundred percent sold on Nicks as a quarterback yet, so I was like, if we can move the ball, maybe we can be, um, a little bit, a little bit dangerous, say, yeah, first half, um, was a bit, was a bit back and forth. Now, Marietta did throw a terrible interception, um, in the. In the red zone, which was his biggest mistake of the night. that was some points off the board. But outside all of that, it was, it was just kind of how the, the whole game played out really. Now, our defense was definitely improved one sense, bit more on that later, but they were playing a lot of zone, which, which is not the really philosophy of Dan Quinn and Joe Witt at all, but they've just had to do that to try and stop the big play. Um, Denver did take advantage of that and move the ball down the field nicely on multiple, multiple drives. But yeah, Washington offense were, were great. And Rodriguez, who I've been shouting about all, um, about the last few years really, but all off season for people that remember on this part. I love him as a runner. He, he had a really good first half. He obviously had had that touchdown as well, so it was, it was. Going to script in terms of, yeah, this is gonna be a football game. I thought with Washington this season, I think, you know, really early, they knew if it's gonna be a game or just gonna be an embarrassment. It kind of feels like
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah, definitely.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:couple of drives you get that sense. Like, you know, you look at the Seattle and the Detroit game and then you look at the, the game in Madrid and I think within the few minutes you're gonna, you get a real feel for the game. So I was like, yeah, okay. Um, and you know, for me it's. I want, really wanted to win. But it's a game. You just, with the record you watch with less stress as a fan, um, for me at least.'cause I'm just like, this is just more of an interesting situation. Let's see how we, how we felt, let's how we can pull it out. But. If that was like a playoff on the line game, I, you know, I probably wouldn't talk to anyone for two days or whatever. I'd have been absolutely gutted, but I just, I just don't feel like that with this team this year, just because of how the season's, uh, played out. But I was, I was really disappointed from Mariota in the end. But to be fair, James, you saw when the real action started and when you get a fourth quarter like that, think people always forget the rest of the game.'cause just so much happened, um, at the end. So, For, for me it was, it was some good, some bad that the defense, um, really were poor. At the end of the first half. Denver took the whole clock to score a touchdown. Um, so it was kind of similar to what we saw in overtime, to be honest. But they obviously done really well in the fourth quarter. Um, they actually forced, uh, was it, three or four punts in a row and a picked, I mean. The interception from Nicks was kind of like the other interceptions this year. I've not really given us too much credit for that. He just didn't see Wagner and just like free, just free the ball right to him. I don't even know what Wagner was really doing. The flavor. Uh, outside of that, I give them more credit for those stops, which gave our offense a chance. And last couple of drives was. Yeah, let's talk about the officiating briefly, because I don't know what you saw without the sound on, but the, if I'll try and do it chronologically. There was, I don't even know if this was the last drive, maybe it was the second from last drive was was a play where Mariota, um, ruled down in the play and kind of scrambled towards the first down marker. But it looked to me that he was down and Peyton threw the challenge flag. But it was a clear trip, like, and the referees gotta see that it's right there. It, the, the only action from the Denver, um, defender was to actually trip him. There was no like hands anywhere near Marita flagged doesn't come out, um, from the official, I don't even think Peyton had to use a challenge. I think they'd done that. you know,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:um, expediting, which was, and
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:was given a sack, and it's just, that is, that's like inexcusable really. Did you see that play
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:No, I've heard all about that one. I, so as I was watching the game, I was also checking on Twitter to see what else had happened in the game. Obviously I saw like the Berks catch
In the back. Unbelievable touchdown, insane stuff. The one thing that we heard from Dan Quinn was that Berks was so hungry for action. And that is a classic one handed, one fingertip over the edge of the ball. To stop that thing. Hold off the defense. Stop it. That's insane.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:and I'd seen, um, everyone, you know, neutrals just saying, what are the rest doing to Washington here? And I could see, um, what, based on what people said, what had happened. But I hadn't actually seen it myself, but.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, well that was the first. Disgrace or call and like it. And you know, this isn't watching it like with the burgundy glasses on because
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:X is quite a good
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah, definitely.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:go on there and you seal the, like, just because it's
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah. We're not the most popular team. So if, if, if, if neutrals are kind of on our side, I, I'll take that. Take that for it's worth.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:exactly. And you see like all the analysts and stuff'cause it's,'cause it's the only game on doing that window.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Sunday night football that are all saying Washington just getting hazed here. But yeah, so the last drive we a chance, actually we, at this point I had the score correct, which was worrying me'cause it was 2017 to
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I was, I was thinking about that.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:I was like, we're just gonna, we're just gonna throw a pick and they're gonna kneel it out or whatever. but then that was like, well, at least I'll be able to brag about getting the score grade. But anyway, obviously I was rooting for us to go and win the game. But yeah, so sequence was probably one of the worst officiated sequences I can remember. Uh, so it starts from, we get the first down and then they give Terry, similar to that
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:with, in New
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:this is worse than that.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, it was worse. Uh, that was the New York Giants one. We needed to win the game at the end of the season a couple of years ago with Rivera. But he gets set, like, it's not even close. He is set, he was
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:relatively late, but he gets, gets set and the official, which is right there, like just throws the flag. Um, and like kind of just says, what, what's he doing? And it's, it's just on replay. Like there's a good second and a
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:And so that's,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:So j just to jump in, because I, I feel like watching it without sound kind of made it even more ridiculous. Just from like another, without the commentators being describe what happened. I, I, I couldn't see anything, so it all stopped and they're standing there for ages looking like idiots trying to decide what they're gonna say it was. And they show a replay of Terry getting set. Get lined up and that was it. So I was thinking, well, surely they haven't called, called him on that, but that's what they'd circled. I was, I was mind blown.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, it's, it's unbelievable. Role actually with that, with watching Without sound. It probably you the sense of absolute confusion the
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah, a hundred percent.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:And
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:how long everything was taken and like people and Sean Peyton was like
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:game down, talking
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:That was annoying me.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:and
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:the whole thing was a the shit
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:that main of fish, he had a smug look on his face as well. I don't know what his deal was.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah. It was weird. And then the next, the very next play. It's a little bit of a broken play. Um, Terry Slips'cause they'd, they'd redone the turf when we were in Madrid, hadn't they? And I dunno if it, it looked really good, but I, it was obviously a bit of an issue for a few of the, uh, receivers and those that were cutting out there. Um, but the cleats maybe, but Terry Slips, mariotta is launches it over his head, so over the numbers when he's outside the hash mark. That's a clear and obvious rule that can't be grounding and fair play to the rules Analyst, is it Terry McClory or something? I can't
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:NBC, but he comes right in and says it. Now, some of these old score analysts will sometimes kind of protect their, like, you know, their colleagues as such back in the day. But yeah, he just says no. That is like not grounding by all and
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:obvious. So. And the thing is, with grounding, you can pick the flag up because it's incomplete.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Right. I.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:it's like, you can actually talk about that.'cause the play's
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:dead. It's not like calling, you know, a hold and you have to, they're quickly trying to get reset. It's just like, you can
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:the flag up.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:So,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:That's like, that's like basic lack of knowledge of the
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:There's, it wasn't like a tough call,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:You, you, you know, when you've been watching football all day and you see like the amount of frozen when quarterbacks are thrown away, there's no difference like your normal one. And again, watching it without sound, I did not know. What they, what they, what it was. I didn't know what side it was on. Um, then they showed that replay and I'm like, I don't see any holding or anything like that. I don't see any interference. The grounding hadn't even crossed my mind. That's how ridiculous it was.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Which is, um, yeah, it's unbelievable, isn't it? And then I believe that they put it up as far down to Washington because they'd forgotten the, the penalty they called before May the first. So our sidelines erupting apparently, probably about the call and the fact it's far down. then they had to get told, actually it's not third and 25, it's second and
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Fuck sake.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Just
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:just an absolute shambles. Both penalties were completely bogus. So at worst it should be, um, it should be, well, the first play didn't even happen, so it should be second and 10. It should be second and 10 and second and 25, which is. because that most, that is like a death sentence in most situations, especially against that
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Right? So they basically just ended the game in all
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm hmm. And, and, and how often does this happen in, in games that are going towards like an exciting finish and they just kind of insert themselves and all you see for the last couple of minutes of fourth court, all you see are the rest happens is so many games where it's coming down to an exciting finish.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:yeah, that's, that's the worst part of it. Um, then. We, I think he froze up to us and there's a good play from the defender, but that would've been a first answer.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Short. The first again, wasn't he? Was it that one? He's always full of yard Short.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:that's a, I think it's, I think it's a different, different one. Uh, but Mario eight, I think that, I think there's a, a, a defensive breakup. Um, we could be getting our drives mixed up. But anyway, the next play, Mario, uh, of third and 25. Scrambles out extends and just side arms it to McClarin who keeps the play alive and gets it, gets us into a fourth and five, which is a brilliant play. Like you're not gonna get all 25 yards sometimes, or mostly, sorry. So if you can get 19 yards, that gives you a shot, and then next play. believe it's right to earth again. First down, say. Incredible stuff to overcome that. Just ridiculous officiating. and then there's a, you know, a few play sequence. I was disappointed. I think we had a shot of winning the game there. But Burkes run the wrong route, which is, it's gonna happen when you, you know, you just, they don't have the chemistry yet. He kind of went
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Marietta put it in the corner of the end zone and then I was a little bit disappointed we didn't get one more good look at the end zone. I mean, it's against Denver. They're kind of defending the goal line there, but I, I did have in the back of my head if it goes over time. Ugh. I dunno. But. Yeah, we didn't really have a great, a great opportunity to win the game with the plays that developed after that. We had a couple of throwaways really as the last seconds, uh, their moody kicks, the, the leveler gets into ot, and then even the coin toss here, the refs look a bit clueless as to what we're asking for.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Oh, really? I missed that.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:you see. Yeah. So that, that's the, that's the thing as well, like tress way's, like, um, we're gonna kick that way and the rest, like, what? like, we're gonna kick that way. He is like, obviously you wanna. Oh, you're gonna kick, okay. It was just like, that was like almost bungled because back in the day, obviously you'll receive an overtime, but now you get a guaranteed possession. So generally you'll, um. Your pick. Uh, now this is where the defense looked pretty awful. So you're
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Mm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:at this
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:and I'm assuming, yeah, so Denver just walked down. Was it four plays? Five plays? It
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:It's five
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:chunks. So
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:five
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:yeah, so you try and play, you try and play zone to keep it all in front of you and maybe force of field gold, I
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:mm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:the strategy. But Denver said, no, no, nah. We know you're not co we, you've got no pressure. You're playing 10 yards off. We'll, we'll scheme something up here. And they would just
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Evan Ingram on, uh, Bobby Wagner was like, oh. I was like, oh, he just looks so old in that, in that play.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:No, and I, I give Dan Quin some credit, and we'll talk about this in more detail shortly, but I think some people are okay. I think some people are slightly over. Over celebrating what? He's turned around with the defense. Yes. They look better. Yes. They're just basically trying to stop giving up the big play. But I, I am not quite so sure when you look, it's, um, it's, it's too, uh, and it's, it's just not,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:we talk about it in more
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:people don't, he hasn't just suddenly turned the
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:completely.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:yeah, let, let's say we were playing the Lions or Seahawks again tomorrow. It would be the exact same story, so yeah, I'm, I'm kind of wi you on that. I think it's perhaps matchup dependent at this point.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:yeah. And that's why I said he'll fire wit after Detroit, but people are, people are, I think, are slightly exaggerating how much of a turnaround there's been. But anyway, five plays, we looked a complete sieve on defense. Um, Harvey. Runs it in Matt's call for a bit of a sleeper on fantasy. That wins me my game, by the way. Um, get me back to five and eight, so, you know, every cloud, um, in, in my fantasy game. So I actually scored the most points in the entire league as a four and eight team this year,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I'm not gonna comment on mine actually. Mine's awful.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Okay. Okay. Um. Denver obviously kick at that point. So you, now this is the one, uh, interesting thing with the new overtime rule. So you obviously have to match the touchdown and then I guess you'll go for two depend clock dependent because why would you give them the ball again? Or maybe you want to tie in a different situation the season, depending on your record, who knows? But anyway, if we can get into the end zone, I'm like, well, we'll go for two. So that could be exciting. So we get the ball mariotta straightaway, 20 yards from McClaren. The rest insert themselves again here. Now gets the fourth down. This is probably the play of the game from this unbelievable competitive, almost warrior-like performance from Marcus Mariota. His sacked for all intensive purposes somehow
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:gets the ball out towards, I think it's bs, but one of our receivers and it's clear PIs all over the
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:of him early. As a spectator of the gamer, you're like, oh, it's game over.'cause you don't really, you can't really see it. It's like a split second and Denver like, get the battered down pick and it's just game over collinsworth to his credit, because I don't really like collinsworth too much, but he calls the flag really early to give you some of this, like, oh, maybe it's not over. It's clear
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:I guess I'll have to give the rest credit for that, but it's absolutely clear if they missed it, it'd be like, then, then the fix is on, isn't it? No wonder people talk about the conspiracy stuff, but I do call it, um, a food place later. and this is against Denver, by the way. So this is what I thought was, was so impressive about the whole night really. Mariotte drops back, uh, fantastic ball down the scene to McCluen on the money touchdown. But no, Connolly gets called for a hold now. Even this, so I was listening. I did listen to the, um, heap, the cool podcast yesterday, just, and I just fast forward it right to the Sunday night section at the end. I just wanted to hear what you know, they were saying about Washington and even this, they were like, there's. In the context of the game, and this is not, you know, Washington fans, I can see that being a hold, I think it's a bit 50
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Mm-hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:the context of the game, especially after they've been hosing you for like the last quarter, everyone's saying they should probably swallow that because the Denver, uh, defender gets so low to the ground. you know, it's a bit of a 50
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:It gets called, but again, you just do, you wanna see that in over time, like wiped out on a
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah, I,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:call. It's like,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I was listening to he the call and they were talking about this and, and someone on there, um, saying, yeah, like. The Broncos defensive line, they're known, they get really low. So, and they tend to just, they tend to fall down like that. Um, it, it kind of makes it look like they're being held and Yeah. As you say, another, yeah. Mad, I dunno how we even end up getting touched on with all this going on.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah. Yeah. And the next play says that call goes from. I think it was third and fourth. You know, 50 yard touchdown. So it goes third and 14. So you're like, I just, I think this is, this is probably it now. It's a valiant effort, but mart drops back and Deebo gets free. Um, down the sideline. Moss kind of bites a little bit, hesitates a little bit. I thought for all of the world it was a touchdown. But Denver tackling at the one, there's then the sequence there where, you know, this is where Denver really argued, aren't they, on the, their own goal line trying to run out the middle. So I think Nichols get stopped. Uh, it gets all the way to, oh no, earth drops on, doesn't he?
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:on fa Downs, a perfect play. one. He was unbelievable all night. Zach Erz. But that, that's obviously a, in situationally, that's a horrible drop, but it's hard. It's hard for someone who's made all those plays all night to criticize, but obviously he, he'd hated that one in the moment. Um, that was a very well drawn up play. it was just a flat out drop, really. Probably a bit of exhaustion on that point. Um, I guess the fourth down I look, I saw Terry, I kind of watched Terry on that play on fourth down. Uh. the salon. I've seen him do that so many times. It doesn't matter if it's patane, he still makes the play potentially a bit of a pick call there. But I mean, if they'd have called that, I'd have just turned the TV off at that point, I think with how we were getting. Um, but whatever. Yeah, fourth down McCluen in the end zone and it goes to the last place. So obviously go for two in that situation, you probably go for two anyway. But certainly as a a three and eight football team, you go for two. Cliff draws up a great play somehow. Um, there's a free runner though, and it's
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:just a free runner. What's the guy's name? Sorry, for Denver. I've.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Uh, Beit is Beit, uh, something. Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Benito or so. Yeah, he's one of the, the better, um, edge rushes in the league, isn't he? So, I dunno if we missed a slide of protection there. Um, but anyway, the play is perfect for McNichols coming back, cutting back across the field. just needs some air under the ball and
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:but it's back down game
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:I in the moment was like, ugh. Another gut wrencher just for the effort that the team put out
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:anything. And. dunno how you
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah. I think,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:for, for, for Marcus
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:yeah. Marcus Mario's face. He was devastated and he got a feel from him. He's been through the rigor and he's, you know, he's done his best to lift this team for a lot of, a lot of crap. Um, he really deserved to win. He'd put a lot into that and yeah, his face kind of said it all. Um, so that was quite sad to see. I actually think maybe he was a touch too slow at getting that ball out. Um, I think he could have got out slightly earlier. Um,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, I mean, it was, it was an incredible play, wasn't it? So
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:of course,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:play,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:but that was, that was just perfectly drawn up. Um, yeah, it's a walking, it's a walkin
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:As I said. I dunno if it was, I, I like to listen to the film breakdown on that one because I dunno if. If there was just a missed slightly protection
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:as well.'cause it's just a zero blitz free rush, isn't it? So with that quality of defender as well, it's it that can happen. But
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:the play was there to be had, it was a shame. We talked through a lot of the end of that sequence just because it, how mad it was like. can imagine like football junkies that will just watch um, Sunday night football, whatever around the country, just thinking, oh God, it's Washington. We've seen what happened against, you know, Detroit and Seattle. They were both um, well, sorry, Seattle was Sunday night football, wasn't it? Um, we've not covered ourselves in glory on any prime time slot and I can imagine everyone just being glued to their screens'cause that was just a crazy football game. I really enjoyed it. Um, was probably a bit harder for you'cause it was the middle of the night you'd woke up probably and then we're just hoping
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah, I just wanted to win. Yeah,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:yeah, could you, could you at least tell though that we were like
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:yeah. No, yeah, no, definitely. And just seeing Terry out there and looking like Terry, and you can see it. Opened everything else up as well. But yeah, just on Terry, I briefly touched on that matchup last week, V Pat Satan. He caught three of eight targets of 30 yards and obviously the touchdown, um, he was being covered by Satan. He has not allowed a touchdown on his last 507 coverage snaps, dating back to week 13 of, uh, last season. So, incredible job. Um. Him and even us, 10 of 12 for 106 at that age. Um,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:pretty crazy.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:unbelievable. Yeah. And Terry, I think by the end, had 96
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah. Seven catches I think. Um, so yeah, I mean really, really positive to see that it's just like, oh yeah, like that is what we can look like when we've got our best better players out there for the most part. Um, yeah. So yeah, I, I could, I could see from. From what limited I saw and blurry eyed and, um, with no sound. You know, you could, you could see, um, they're putting a really good, really good effort and it was a really good end to the game. Um, but yeah, there's definitely plenty of positive to take from that. Obviously it was been nice to just tick off a win and just kind of end this, end this streak. And especially for Mariota as well
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:a good, yeah, and
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:against good team. Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:It would, yeah. So I, I think the, the big takeaways, we just do a couple of. Minutes to round off, um, the game. I've got a couple of of things to talk about. I, the big takeaways for me were, yeah, this is what we can be when we've got our receivers on the field. Let's not forget how talentless we've been going into some of them games like Dallas on the road. I mean, what was it? Tam Martin Robbie chosen. You know, it is Chris Moore.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:just like, it, like Chris Moore in Madrid. Mariota puts it. Drops in the bucket,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:he inside the five? If that's McClure, you just walk off and win the game,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:So stuff like that. Um, it just shows you though, how how much talent deficiency we had out there at receivers.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:to see Deebo, Terry and Ertz in the passing game with Berk there as well,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:who as James Benjamin made that incredible catch. That's like a bit of a legit receiving covert. We just
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:them healthy all
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah. And it's, you know, it's been tough to watch, you know, and even just as a. A football fan or a general fan of your team, you know, you, you get excited watching ex, you know, exciting playmakers on your offense, right? And it's just been, ugh, just watching. No one can make a play. It's just been really shit to watch. So yeah, having, having Terry out there making those sort of plays is just kind of made me feel like, think back to last year and stuff. So, which we hadn't, hadn't really felt, uh, this year at all. And as I say, just a reminder that, um. We do have something there and there is still a, a culture there that is being built and it's different to previous where this was back under Vera or whoever. Um, if Schneider's still at the helm, this team wouldn't have put in that performance at all. Um, they'd have, they've down tools. So shout out to Dan Queen and I've given him some stick, but, um, he's rallied them together. Coming off the buy, didn't get the win, but, um, props to him for that.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Agreed. And just on that, you've teamed me up nicely'cause I'm gonna do some quick. Like grading here, but just on that, I think that's the game Terry kind of needed, even though we didn't get the win because it just gave the fan base a reminder. It's been a bit of a, a fractured relationship, hasn't it, from both
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Mm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Uh, since the summer. So I think he needed that game. So it'll be great to see him back, um, for the remainder of the season if he can go and. Have some big performances that will just change the mood about McClaren, which I think is important, um, going into next year. And then I just wanted to talk about the offensive line really quickly. Denver best fur down defense. Um, best sack rate in the league, right? So I think we converted over 50% on fur down. We rolled up 400 plus yards on them. So really. go to show that one, the game plan was incredible from Cliff getting the ball out quickly. But two, the offensive line is, in my opinion, the strong point of this team. Now they've had the odd laps this year as well. I think what we're seeing is Ally progressing quite nicely and cosmi getting back to like full speed game shape. So. To me next season, we get all these guys together. If they're all healthy and we can keep them semi-healthy throughout the year, that could be a real strength. And Connolly's last four games, James, I took a look at this, uh, last night. His gradings getting like better and better and better. I know you had the penalty there at the end, but you're not hearing a
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:him are you?
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:good. Like you're not here, you're not hearing, oh, you know, the rookies getting worked or
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:anymore. So I think. We can get some, I think next season that could be a massive strength for us, so
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah. Nice. Just a quick, uh, stat from this I pulled up, um, the other day. Oh, yesterday. So we actually held the Broncos to a 17.9% pressure rate. Um, so the Bronco's lowest in the game, um, since they allowed 70 points to the Dolphins in 2023. So huge out to them because that's no mean fee. And, um. They've been getting pressure all year, and obviously we've had some struggles, but the line looks healthy and as you say, um, kind of progressing, uh, nicely. Um, Broncos had previously produced an NFL high 41.3% pressure rate in the first 12 weeks, the season. So that's a huge drop off. Um, on, on to this.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, massive. And on that, I won't ask you for your grades. I know you only kind of came into together. Him late, but I'll just give them like kind of some really quick ones here. So I'm gonna give Quinn for the defensive calling only I'll give him a CC plus. Um,'cause I think it was a lot better, but I still think there was a ton of weaknesses there, um, for his like game coaching as in having them ready to play, um, and everything relating to just. How he managed the game and how prepared the team was. I'm gonna give him an A, I thought it was one of the best performances of the season and it was no ball to see that after the by and obviously with the players back, as we've mentioned. And then Cliff, I'm gonna go as far, and this sounds maybe a little crazy to some, but I'm gonna go as far as to give Cliff an A plus an
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Whoa.
I would give myself, I would look, I hate to do it, but I will do it. I would give myself an A plus. Is that enough?
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:I thought that was his probably. You can look at the charges. Game I neighbor. He really took advantage of having his people back out there, got them involved. Um, he got the ball out so quickly and he stuck with the run and sticking with the run early. I think that gave Marta a second or two more in the
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:game. Later on, it opened everything up. I think he called the game perfectly. I think if we went out there and tried to pass on them quite heavily, we've had a very,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I'm glad you, sorry. I'm glad you mentioned that.'cause when I switched on, obviously this is late in the game. There's maybe like game script to it. I was like, I don't see us run the ball once. Um, but I could see the stats and Rodriguez, you know, was carrying about 4.5 yards per carry and had a touchdown and everything. Um. But yeah, from what I saw, I was like, I guess getting towards the end of the, I guess it's game script or whatever you might be able to tell me, but, um, there was a couple, I was obviously just switched on and I was like, ah, could we run it there? You know, um, we could see Marriott getting under pressure at times and Yeah. I dunno, what do you, what do you think?
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, I, I think when it on, we probably were always like every single
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:something probably, and we had done the damage in the first half to.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:right.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Keep him honest. And yeah, so I think that just the amount of plays as well, like I think Mary. The amount of snaps he had by the end, they were a little gassed as well. So yeah, I think, I think that's what what you saw, um, kind of pass heavy, but it was a completely different story in the first half, which I allowed for that. I thought Cliff was almost faultless, like the, the, you know, if, if we get the, the walk off there, everyone's saying like, what a play call design as well on, on the two point conversion every, was an amazing game call. I really, I always go that high. That was Kings at his best all night, so I was really impressed. Impressed with him. Um, so yeah, I mean. We lost a football game, so I know we are not really the moral victory type podcast, but when you're coming into a team that's won, what was it, eight or nine straight, we'd lost six, seven in a row. You have to, you have to look at the performance and you have to take so much out of that. When like even Madrid, there was so much where we just. Left so many opportunities out there. Yeah. There were moments where we didn't, you know, we, we weren't playing complimentary football, like the defense got stopped and we were freeing out. So that was just a flow of the game. But overall, I could not fault the effort. I thought some of the individual performances were brilliant and I thought Denver were, know, they'd done, they made the play. But I think they're pretty, they, I think deep down they'd be feeling pretty lucky to get out there with
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah, someone put that to Sean Payton after the game, um, and he was like, well, win's a win. No, we're celebrating, you know, that sort of thing. Like they hadn't kind of got away with one. Um, yeah, they won a lot of, I think they combined win. Um, how would you call it? The amount of points they've won by over the last four games or something is combined for like under 10 or something crazy, so
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, I mean it's, it's them in Chicago, right? That they're doing the same thing. I think Denver probably has, out of those two teams, they have the best unit in terms of their
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:And as you know, the old saying goes, defenses travel. Well, they'll probably be at home anyway with their seating, but you know, defense in January can, can win games. No doubt about it. I'm not complete like on both of those teams and. This isn't me with the Jaden Daniels pick situation. I'm just, I'm not sold on either quarterback, to
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Um, they both had an incredible year and the bears going in there and beating the eagles, I've found hilarious as well. But I don't, I don't, um, I don't see either of those two teams, super Bowl teams. Um,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:more of a shot because. They have actual legit chance of getting the one seed. Now, I think Green Bay are gonna have a say in the north, but we'll do around the league stuff as we get nearer the playoffs. So talking about that, we've got what, how many games left have we got now? We've got four games, five
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:It is
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Um,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:five five, I think. No.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:got Minnesota on Sunday, which you would think would be. The game that we surely can just go and get and get the win. Um, I mean, they've got a good defense. I think JJ McCarthy's back, I
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah. I, I, I mean.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:be about JJ McCarthy,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:caught quite a bit of that Viking Seahawks game, and I was really hoping we'd have that Max Broma guy this week. But sounds like McCarthy's back, not that McCarthy's been great, but um, would've been nice to just have a, a gimme there. Um, seems like every, every week we play someone and they got people, they got the players coming back, so,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:If it, if it was Jaden Daniels versus that guy, they tried out there Sunday,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:yeah. Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:because it's so, so close as well and I'm like, maybe I can just remember what Windfield like. But yeah, I'm not, I don't think I need to be traveling in this kind of weather in the Midwest. But I um, I was looking forward to this game at the start of the season.'cause it's a local one for me. be honest, you know, this game is probably gonna have the lowest due of the entire N-F-L-N-F-L week. Um, the Vikings are done,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Mm-hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:So we'll see what happens. But in general, without just focusing too much on this game, I'm actually a little bit more excited after watching that on Sunday just to watch us down the stretch because we are gonna be playing. In some games here that could have some quite interesting, uh, playoff implications for others. And you, you know, that kind of phrase of a bit of a live dog, I feel like with getting our players back and they're clearly gonna bring JD back when he is ready, whether it's this Sunday or the following week in the Meadowlands. What? Yes, I think it is five, isn't it? Minnesota Giants, Eagles, cowboys, Eagles, right? So that's that, that. That feels like quite fun to me, potentially. Um, I wanna see us go out there and try and win those games. As I said, I'm not one that's gonna be cheering for losses on draft position. Not yet anyway, so we'll lose some of them because I just think that's the way our seasons go and we're not gonna roll off five straight, so
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah, people really need, really don't need to worry about that. I mean, yeah,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, we, yeah,
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:just try and enjoy it like, yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:stop overthinking it because we, we are not gonna win
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:with teams that need a few teams that need to win
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah. And like what? Whatever. Whatever you, yeah. Whatever you are rooting for is gonna change it. So do you really wanna sit there for the last five months? Rooting for us Five months. Five. Five Games rooting for us to lose when you can't change it anyway, so you might as well want us to win. Um.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:so stupid. The only time to do that was when we needed Jaden Daniels in the top two pick, or we needed the top two pick to, to make our quarterback selection with the new regime. It's just dumb. Just enjoy it. Look at Terry catching football and cheer for him to help us win football games. It's like, we're not winning five straight. We'll have a good pick. Let's see what happens. Um, so yeah. Do you, are you looking forward to some of those, uh, divisional matches
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I am, I am.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:I, I've got a sneaky feeling we might upset
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:We are gonna,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:road.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:we're gonna win at least one of the, what? We got Eagles twice. Dallas once, is that right?
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah. So it goes, Eagles sa I think it's a Saturday. Um, and then it's like Christmas Day Dallas. And then Eagles at the link to
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Now, I would love that. I would love them needing to win that last game.
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah. I,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:could be
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I think we'll win at least one of them. Right. Um, which could throw a spanner in the works. The Christmas day one. It'd be great to win on Christmas day, just for, you know, have a nice Christmas day. Um,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:well, it could, could also end Dallas season
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:need to
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:So stuff like that could be quite fun. So the fact we're playing the divisional games late, make it a little bit more interesting to me if we've turned a bit of a corner with um. Health and getting some players
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah,
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:getting
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:I mean if we're, if we're healthy and Jaylen's property back, like we're as good as those teams. Apart from like the defense and Dallas Defense has actually improved since they've made some moves. But yeah, I think, I think it's something to look forward to. I don't think it's like, ugh, it's gonna be watchable, I hope. Now, um.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:a great, that's a great word. Because it was getting to the point where I was like. This is gonna be a chore, but Sunday night gave me a little bit more of a jolt to the rest of the season. And as a fan base, I think we need a couple of wins and we
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:these connections back. And it will, that will change the mood a bit for
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Hmm.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:season, in
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Yeah.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:So
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:yeah, and, and
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:let's enjoy
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:just very briefly on Jayden, if he gets cleared, I think it's actually a good spot to bring him back this week. It'd be in a dome, it'd be a team. We'd be playing a team that I think they've only just really realized they're completely screwed. We are kind of, we know where we are and we're getting healthier. They're kind of more, kind of vibes seem pretty bad there at the moment. Um, I actually like that spot for him if he gets cleared. I'd like to see him play a game before going to the Meadowlands in a, in whatever godawful weather might be next week. So, um, yeah, if he's cleared, I'd like to see him out there.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Yeah, I agree. Um, let's keep an eye on that. Sounds like they're gonna take it right up to Friday on, on that call. So, um, I believe James and Josh will be back later in the week to talk about some those early season predictions around the league stuff and maybe preview them in Minnesota games. So we'll get something out before, before Sunday. I'm not sure on the schedules if I'll be making that one, but. We will have some content out there. Uh, we're running close to 45 minutes, James, so I think we've rounded off, uh, another heartbreaking loss, the second overtime loss in a row. But as you heard from our analysis there, some, some very good elements to that loss if you can ever take that away from a game. So we are excited to see us down the stretch. Um, yeah, so look forward to that. James, anything else to add today?
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Onwards and upwards.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:Onwards and upwards, onwards and upward. Let's go and
james_1_12-02-2025_131441:Let's get a win.
ledders_1_12-02-2025_071441:in the, let's get a win in the Twin Cities. Let's make us feel a little better. Get some festive cheer going early here. Um, but thanks for listening guys, and we will talk soon. Hail.
