The inevitable is this, I'm gonna get the football and I'm going to either go this way or I'm gonna go that way. So you've got to, you know, like Dirty Harry, do you feel lucky today? Let's go. Goal line. Goal line. I left tight wing, 70 chip on white. Ready? Here comes the diesel. Here comes the Jesus 41, yellow 41. There's the snap hand. Good hole. He's first. He's gone. He's gone. Touchdown. Washington Reds 42 yard touchdown run on fourth and a foot. John Reagans has given a Redskins the lead in Super Bowl seven.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:welcome to another edition of the Hail on Free podcast. I'm your host, Josh, Sunday night, late Sunday night, actually. UK time. Joined by both James and Lee on the weekend before the Super Bowl. No football this weekend for the first time in a very long time. Uh, I saw you yesterday, James. It was Town Football Club. Lee, I haven't seen you obviously. How was your weekend? What have you done on this weekend that you haven't had a game to watch?
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Hello sports fans. Hello, Josh. I have not done too much. Just relax. Caught up on some sleep please. January's over. It's been rather. at work, to say the least. So, that I'm showing much signs of improvement to that to the end of the winter, I don't think. But overall, nothing really to be honest. Just relaxing, sleeping. Watch the game you're at yesterday. That wasn't very impressive. Uh, super Bowl next, next weekend. I'm already looking forward to spring now. It's been a, it's been a bit slog
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:so far.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah, totally, totally understand that. Especially with the weather reports your side. Uh, James, it was nice to see you yesterday. In spite of not the best sporting attendant, uh, game to attend in the world.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yes. Um, but good to see, uh, Mick as well, uh, in good spirits. Had a little bit of Washington chat with him.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:gave me praise for calling out back in the summer that Terry McConn would get injured.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Did he?
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:He, he, he threw back a call back to that, so I was, I took that, um, from the OG Redkins fan.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Nice little bit of a Mini Madrid reunion with, uh, Jake there briefly as well.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yes,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Uh, I have to just quickly get my brownies outta the oven. So James, if you, if you don't mind, vamping while I do that.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Uh, yeah, it appears Josh is having a bit of a late night, so he puts some brownies in the oven. but yeah, not, not much to say about yesterday's game. Good to see Josh. Lee, there's been not an awful lot of news around the NFL this week, but a few head coaching spots getting filled. Dunno if you've seen any of that.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:No is the answer. I haven't been too, um, tied
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Working out. Working out?
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:world. Yeah. It's been some rather long working days, so I haven't seen too much of that since. Of course we saw the, uh, news of our defensive coordinator, which no, that will get into, but enlighten me. What's happened on
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Well, the most, the most noteworthy one. We, we had some jokes in the week. Ron Ron Rivera was, um, having interviews with the Arizona Cardinals. Um, one of
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:That wasn't a wind up. I thought you were winding me up.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:One of them was a seven hour long, um, discussion.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:That's probably, that's probably him answering one question.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:the, to the disappointment of Ron. However, they have hired Matt LaFleur's brother, the Rams oc uh, today. I think Kubiak was first choice, but he chose the Raiders earlier today, so that's noteworthy as sea. Uh, Seahawks, uh, fence coordinator uh, wound up with, uh, nice gig at the Raiders with the number one overall pick and, uh, yeah, should be an interesting one to see how that pans out.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:I mean for the,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:sorry, go on Josh.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:so for the comedy value, um, and on this podcast, I was very much hoping Rivera got another gig so that we could do a Rivera Clipse segment every week.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:That's not an appealing, it's not an appealing job. That one that cardinals on, don't think.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:No, it doesn't sound like it. They're also on our schedule next year, so that would've added some, some spice to the podcast and just generally,'cause I can imagine going to Arizona and leading to Ron Rivera after appearing in an NFC championship game. But this offseason coaching cycle, which will lead into some nice chat about, um, our staff situation has been crazy, right? It feels like it's been almost double, like a usual year of turnover. Lots of movement all over the league. And for Washington, locked up Blau early, which there was reasoning behind that for sure. Did we go through every possible candidate for a defensive coordinator? I think there was nine interviews, but then when we did make the move, there was a couple of other people who became available as well. Um,'cause Schwartz left Cleveland. Right. So
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:He's still there. He is actually still there and under contract, but he wants to leave'cause he got passed up for the the top job. So I can't see, I can't see how he does stay there now though, to be fair.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Yeah. Okay. That's interesting. Um, what did you, what did you think overall of the, the process for Washington and were we just kind of throwing darts a little bit with the amount of interviews we had going in there? Obviously it wasn't the massive, the appealing in terms of our talent on that side of the ball.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:It does it seem a little bit panicked this off season in terms of what we've done? Where are you feeling about it? I guess overall in general, just include the offensive side in, in this conversation, considering we've, we've got a rookie play corner as well. I.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm. Good question. On the defensive side, I felt like they had the right approach to begin with in terms of the type of candidate they were. Interviewing'cause they were going for, um, well-regarded, experienced defensive coordinators. A number of those were interviewed alongside the up and coming or well-regarded kind of positional coaches. Like we said, we might end up hiring. So they kind of did, did the due diligence on both types of candidates. So, so for me that was a good process, but it's just underwhelming. Ending up with someone who isn't that experienced defensive head and someone who is relatively inexperienced. Now, I'm not gonna say that Deonte Jones isn't gonna be a success in the league. Who knows who might be a success of us. It's a hell of an uphill battle for a, an experienced guy. Um, so I feel like process was good, but at the end, result wasn't really.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah, and interesting'cause Raheem Morris got hired by the Niners today. Um. I wonder if they were holding out for that. But once that Niners job came up, that was kind of his, his first choice. I wouldn't say I know enough about this coordinator. It did seem to, like you said, it did seem like they were thrown darts and just with the way the season's gone and some decisions that haven't worked out, it's hard to have full confidence. So you do kind of question what, what the process is. But um, by all accounts, it sounds like this is someone who's. Should have been a coordinator, maybe even last, uh, last year. Um, so we'll, we'll see. You know, uh, who, who knows it, it can't, surely cannot be worse than last year.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:It can't be west. I've got a little bit of a counter to, to Josh's theory there a couple of thoughts on, Jones. Taking, taking the gig. So. I don't mind somebody who's highly touted in a defensive staff getting the role and the promotion and bringing somebody new with fresh ideas in. So I'm on board with that. My concern a little bit about Jones is it's not like he's like 30 years old and I'm like, you know. The Seattle staff and is the next big thing as a divisional, as a, um, sorry, divisional as a positional coach. He's like been around forever. So he is just, if you look at his career, he is literally, know, gone from the east coast to Hawaii to back and he is been all over the place in college and football and he's only job as calling plays as an actual coordinator. Was LSU in 2021. Now that is a big gig, obviously LSU, we know about that program. But don't know, I guess I'd feel a little bit better about it if it was an up and comer who's, you know, just one of
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:brand new ideas, fresh ideas, who's come from an elite staff. So the fact he's been around the block a bit and he, and he hasn't been put on a staff as a DC in the NFL before, that concerns me a little bit more.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Mm
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:he just kind of living off the reputation of, you know, Brian, Brian Flores and that unit for the last few years? That would be the cynic in me.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:mm
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:the other hand, he is
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:It's a big part of you, Lee.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Yes. Yeah, but do you know what I'm saying on that?
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah, yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:he's
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:years
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:No, it's 47.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:it gives you pause, isn't it? It does make you wonder, okay, why hasn't it happened sooner? But sometimes it's just how these things work out. And maybe that has hindered him being with Flore in recent years and maybe they've fought, you know, he's not ready. I dunno. What do you
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:He is. He's an in. Yeah. You say he is gone around the block a bit. He is an interesting guy in that sense. Like he, um, I was looking at his resume. He's coached at every level. Like, and when I say every level, it's high school, division one, division two, division three at college, Canadian Football League, and the NFL. There's not many people have been all the way through it in some ways. His kind of arc when you look down his Wikipedia jobs he's had has been quite like progressive. He's not kind of gone back any steps or like gone to be a head coach and then gone back and then it has been pretty solid. It's just taken forever. So he says 47, he um. He's actually a local guy who was born in Maryland, went to college at Temple before he went and transferred as a cornerback. He got hurt. He is one of those guys that like didn't have much of a career as a player'cause he got hurt. So he went straight into kind of coaching 2001. Interesting guy for that sense, like you say, as a defensive backs coach. For the Vikings, they were pretty good as a secondary, but as you say, hey, you, you can't really assume that's all down to him. Um, and in the situation where Flores is your head coach, is is the guy ahead of you there? The assumption is probably that it isn't as much DTE Jones. So really like in terms of jury out, it's like, it's about as much as you can get in it really.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah, I.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:it's hard for us to even analyze it, isn't it? But if you take the floret kind of approach and envisage him bringing those ideas to dc that does excite me on, on the flip side of that. And surely they're gonna have to at least give him some better tools to work with. And you would think if it's gonna be the Minnesota That there's gonna be fairly blitz heavy,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Mm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:we were very underwhelmed, weren't we? With kind of our packages and
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:in that, in that space under Joe Witt. So I do have. Uh, benig Substack up in front of me as a loyal subscriber. So
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:home. Your home page.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:no, his article when, when the announcement was, was, was made. Um, so taking keys from Flores means a blitz heavy approach with a mix of alignments, administrators, 48% blitz. Led the league this season far ahead of Atlanta at 34%. The Vikings ranked top 10 in points allowed per game in each of the past two seasons and finished top 10 in turning over three of Jones's fourth seasons in Minnesota. So interestingly, when he was at LSU ranked, um, he was ranked seventh nationally in interception percentage, and among the top 25 in turnovers. So. Some, some
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:That's really interesting. I, I, I, that's really, I mean, so I didn't. Know about the blitz stuff as much, but my immediate concern there is two immediate concerns. One, we don't have fast linebackers, and two, we don't have cornerbacks that can play man coverage at the line very well. And you need both of those to have blitz heavy packages successfully. So I mean, I mean, I know they're thinking it's not a one year turnaround and there'll be a lot of turnover in the roster, so. I'm, I'm, they're not matching him to what we've got. I think they're basically saying, I like that philosophy and we are gonna have to have a lot of change to be able to, to blitz effectively with our current personnel. I would say.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:It excites me that there might be a bit of an overhaul. To be honest, we have 65 million I believe, in cap space and the seventh over overall pick. So not like we don't need stuff on our fence as well, but surely this would be. The focus and Quinn cannot, cannot put that kind of, know, out there again as a defensive minor head coach. Can he? So,
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Latimore, if they cut him, we get another 18 million, I believe. And they'll, if they give tons a deal, that should lower the cap more. And I think pain is a 28 million hit next year. I think that needs to be restructured or cut or traded or something. So you can't be
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:him 28 million next year. I.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Um, just to couple more things on Jones. Um, obviously under Flores, he also coached under Vance Joseph in Miami and Mike Zimmer in. Um, Minnesota as well. So he is, had a, he's had a lot of kind of time under well respected defensive minds, so the pedigree's kind of there. It's like he's gotta prove it. I'll say. Um, good luck to him. That's, that's the thing is we are, we are all hoping he succeeds and he's got, he's on a hide into nothing in the sense of the team at the moment, so,
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:problem was we all had ideas of different names being thrown out there, so then it was underwhelming.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:yes, yes.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:I've not really looked him, looked at it much at all. Uh, to quote Malcolm Tucker, haven't had time to, uh, cross the i's and fuck the T's on, uh, on, Durante Jones, but wish more the best. Sounds like he's a good bloke and he's finally got his chance. So
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah, I knew this would be a, I knew this would be a Sweary podcast when I saw we were all having a drink late on a Sunday. A different, is that a Red, red wine for James?
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Support Josh
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Oh, I support a nice interest town mug with some sort of beer in for Lee. What is the.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:This is my Christmas present from you, Josh,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:UA for cup 40th year and edition in, so this would've been 2021 Christmas present. It's,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Nice.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:it's a local IPA anti-hero or anti-hero as the locals say.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Anti-hero.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Sound
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Nice.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:to me, Lee is.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:It is pretty strong. Just one other, uh, just one other thing on, on this, it sounds like we're, we're going big on trying to get someone to create turnovers, which was the philosophy with wit as well.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Mm
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:make about what you will. But you know, James, is Mr. Running back in the group?
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:mm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:would probably have myself as Mr. Secondary. There's something about cornerbacks and safeties I like. They're just,
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah, that's very much on your radar, isn't it? Gonzales Cooper de Jean.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:exactly. So I am
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Who.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:in. I'll put it out there early. Now it's February, I can do this.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Oh God.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Caleb Downs,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Okay.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:That's, that's my, my just initial. Want, and I know we need Russia's edge rush, et cetera, but I have seen this team make big trades for Josh Norman, for latimore have passed off on Hamilton Deje brisker for poorer players. So I want ca downs. I want a star in the, the secondary.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:He, he would fit the bill. Um, about as good a pedigree as you can get in College. National Champion played for Alabama and Ohio State. So as a big safety, I like it. Yeah. Nice. Oh, we're gonna get into some serious draft chat, aren't we? I don't think I'm gonna find any tight ends in the first round that we, I can go for
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:running backs, leaders, some nice ones in free agency, which might
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:is
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:to be had. I've got a few wants in free agency, I must say.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:nice.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:because when you start the podcast you kind of think, well, in the in season will be our forte'cause there'll be so much going on. There'll be games to talk about.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:For this year. Obviously it sucked in terms of the performance, but it became quite, it also became quite challenging for the podcast with
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:It did.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:hours, et cetera. I, I'm quite looking forward to some of the off-season chat, especially with a lot of changes and the seventh favor all,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:for after a little break, I think free agency and draft talk in March. Will, will get going. It'll, we'll, we'll get going. It'll be, it'll be easier to find a time slot as well for us.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Uh,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:We were a bit restricted, weren't we, by the kind of how things panned out and now we are freeform. Let it flow.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:also mention there's quite a few coaches that got let go yesterday. I think Kerrigan
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yep.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Others? don't know. I can't remember their names, but
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Sheriff Floyd and Pete on a Hagan both came across from Dallas.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:coordinator is still there.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Interesting.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:he's gone asap.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:I'd, I'd like to clear house really on the defensive side personally.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm. Yeah. Well, I think we'll see some more of those sorts of things happen when the, the, the, the new guys get their staff together. Right.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:taking views. I wonder if he might bugger off somewhere.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:As a coordinator,
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:we'll get a coordinator job, but I dunno.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Um, he.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:at the Broncos, I
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah, assistant head coach and offensive pass game coordinator. It's that step before oc, isn't it? Basically for the Broncos. So yeah, good luck.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:has there been much chatter on Anthony Lynn? Because I know the Buffalo
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:No. Well the Browns, Browns went moning in the end, didn't they? I think that's his only shot. I.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:I got briefly excited that we might get two third round picks as compensation if he went as a head coach somewhere,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Really?
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:yeah. Yeah, this year and next year I've been lovely.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:helpful actually.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:I didn't think there's any chance
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:with that.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:anyway. Yeah.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:been great, wouldn't they? No busts in there. I'm sure.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Alright. Nice. Um,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:McCaffrey's cousin.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:uh, God. Okay. Uh, I, I did have a couple of things I wanted to touch on before we do. Any talk of next Sunday's game? Uh, well, one thing is that we will have another pod out before next Sunday's game. We are gonna pod next Saturday, including Lee's famous Super Bowl trivia, which is, uh, gonna be on that on the Super Bowl weekend itself, rather than tonight. It will be after the episode. Um,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Damn right. It is famous within certain circles, but.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:yeah, yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:But a lot of them, you know, have to be NFL fans in the,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:to, to
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:I,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:But I'll,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:okay, I'm glad you, I'm glad you said nineties.'cause my other.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:for me.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah, I'm glad you said 90. So my other bit is I did wanna talk about briefly the, um, the 43 year anniversary, which was Friday of, um, the first ever game televised NFL game televised in the uk, uh, which was Washington's victory over the Miami Dolphins in the Super Bowl. So that was 43 years ago on Friday. Um, and was the game that got so many fans in the uk, uh, or so many people as fans of, of the skins basically on channel four. Um, and I wanted to touch on it just because we talked about John Riggins a fair few times, and you heard him in the intro. Actually, I played it in the intro to this show of the famous run in the Super Bowl, um, on fourth and one. Um, it wasn't a walk off touchdown, actually, by the way. It was just us going ahead in the fourth quarter of that game. Um, but I looked at the stats for Rico. He was the MVP of that Super Bowl. He had 166 Russian yards, which was a, a, um, a. Record at the time. Um, but the thing is, we played four games in that playoffs and I, this is not a Super Bowl trivia thing really, so I'm not stepping on it. Hopefully Lee. But I wanted James to guess how many rush yards John Riggins had across the playoffs in those four games. Now he had 166 in the Super Bowl, so you've got three more games to add onto that. And it is still an NFL record. I would add. It wasn't as high, unfortunately, as 826. You had 610 rushing yards
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Not bad is
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:in, in the, in the four games in the playoffs that year, including 166 in a score in the Super Bowl. Um,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:mi Minnesota and Detroit maybe. And the Rams
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:good questions. Yes. Um, it was. Detroit, Minnesota. And the Cowboys.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Cowboys,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Cowboys, yeah. Uh, in, uh, in that, um, it was a weird one actually.'cause he, he only had three point, 3.1 yards per carry in the season,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Oh, really? Right.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:so, yeah. So, and he was 33 at the time
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Yeah.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:and he said, I haven't got many of these left. I'm going all out. Uh, in the playoffs. Um, and I think he had, he, he holds the record for yards, but also the record for Carries, which I can't find at this point. But, um, yeah, it absolutely put the team on his back for all those playoffs. And as it was the anniversary of that day, I heard it on another podcast. I thought it was worth mentioning dad's favorite player as well.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Yeah, that was the first ever correct on Channel four, so
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:It.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:I guess that was a big deal at the time for anyone to watch the big game Live
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Is at the Rose Bowl as well. So very famous,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Yeah.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:famous photo of, of Riggins, um, handing off the Miami linebacker who kinda slipped as she was going across the field. And, uh, yeah, it's, it is well worth a watch if anyone that hasn't, if anyone's listening, who isn't a Skins fan or hasn't gone back to it for a long time, uh, anyway. Okay, we will move on then to talk about. Next week's game, uh, at the Super Bowl we walk. We're not gonna sort of preview it in too much detail, but we will have a bit of a chat about it, kind of, um, informally who we think might, might win the game and stuff like that. Um, Patriot Seahawks actually got a story briefly of Patriot Seahawks 2012. Um,'cause I wanted to chat about kind of. Super Bowls we'd watched together and watched apart and stuff.'cause many of us, or all three of us have watched games together and apart in various points and stuff. But I was reminded of this the other day by, by our friend Ben Curl over in New York, who I watched that game with. But it was one of those ones where, you know, when you don't have a plan and you aren't actually gonna watch it or you're just gonna watch it at home or whatever. Um, that was when I was living in Clapham. I think both of you have been or, or came to that flat at one point in Clapham, so you'll know it relatively well. And as I tell the story, you'll know where I was. But we were gonna just like wander down to Clapham. And hope that there was somewhere showing it or like try and bust into clap on grand or something for their Super Bowl party.'cause Ben came over and his brother was down as well. And we were wandering down that road towards, um, the pub at the bottom, the north coat, which you both know as well. And we were, it was like 10 30 at night. We were like, this is just stupid. This is a terrible idea. Let's just go back to my flat and watch it. And then we stumbled across that pub, the Merchant of Batey, which was open on that road, and it, it had a sign, which I'll never forget outside, which said American football open late. So
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:American,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:it didn't,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:not even. Not even Super
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:yeah, it didn't even say Super Bowl. This is back in 2012 where it wasn't that common for like just a pub to have it on.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:20 15, the Super Bowl? Correct?
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:2012 you said? Yeah.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:20, 20 12, 13, wasn't it?
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:15, I think. Are
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:2015. Sorry, 2015. Yeah. My bad. 2015, I'm, I'm thinking of that. Broncos one or whatever. 20. Yeah. 2015. Yeah. And that's when I was living in cl That makes more sense, sorry. Yeah. And it just says American football, AP and late even 2015. Right. It wasn't that common for like a pub to show it. Like I live in like sports bars or big venues and we were like, well, it's probably ticketed or whatever. There was not even a doorman on the door. We, we walked in the four of us. And we, and they were like, oh, can we help you? He was like, have you, have you got a table for the game? And he was like, we haven't butched, like, nah. And he dragged the table across in front of the projector screen, just put it at right at the front and gave us a table for five.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:this is fantastic. Did
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:And knew you'd love this.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:did you all have the Monday off as well
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Uh, yeah. So the, so Glen didn't, and he, he went home at halftime.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:This is, this is brilliant. The UK Super Bowls Sunday nights. Now obviously you guys have had. These organized things with your fantasy football team for a long time now, but I've always enjoyed them back in the day, even when I was at university and done some pretty crazy, crazy things like take the Monday off and go to London when I was living in Sheffield and stuff. Uh, had the odd one in. Leads. I think we had one in Josh when you were at university.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Uh, I had, there was one where there was a, we had an open bar situation that we kind of won. If you joined this betting company and done so and done these bets in advance or something, me and my mate. Had some crazy, crazy Super Bowls. We had the NFL uk. What did they used to call it? Was it the Super Bowl Bash? Back in the day
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah. Yeah. This, this, yeah. Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:was, you just had to apply for a lottery system, didn't you? We had that at the O2 when there was like, then four foot of snow dumps during the game. It was some, some interesting
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:of Super Bowls
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:day. Now is that pub, is that near the north now? I, I like the north code. That's clap and junction, isn't it?
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:It's Catherine Junction, the pub, the bat merchant of Bates is on the walk between the common and the junction. Up that road. You know the hill that kind of goes between the two? It's banging in the middle. It's a,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:restaurant used
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:yeah, yeah, exactly. Next to the Tesco there. It's great. It's always a good sports pub, but they put us in the front. He just put a table there, went, yeah, you go. And then it was like, oh, you could just order like wings or something at the bar. It was table service for laggers, and I watched the Malcolm Butler interception in that game and then just walked home like 10 minutes to my flat, like three 30 in the morning. That's.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:that game. I was at Riley's of Ipswich with, um, a Seahawks fan in our fancy group. Um, that was a very interesting night. I also vividly recall placing a bet on a Percy Harvey touchdown, um, which I thought I won by. Got call back. Uh, there's a flag on the play. I was most devastated on that one. That was a decent earner. Those are my memories from that one.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:I had two Super Bowls when I was living in California and this was one of them. And we were at a friend's house and there was one Patriots fan there. He was kind of annoying, but I also didn't really like the Seahawks at the time for some reason. Say. I was not too worried about that game up. I was that Super Bowl and then it was the Broncos Panthers Super Bowl with the two I was living on the west coast for. But yeah, I remember just having a house pipe, this one. So certainly finished a lot earlier in the evening. Then
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:done for you.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Actually you reminded me that the Broncos Panthers one is the first one that we've done. We did as a fantasy football group, James, right. At Boines. So this Patriot Seals one would've been the last one that I did before. I've, I've been doing it with all, with all of us a lot. It's good stuff.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:university that there was bars that would stay open for the Super Bowl, but because they're in like students towns, you get a load of annoying students and they're just looking for a late drink. I remember watching. It was the Seattle versus Pittsburgh Super Bowl in Champs in Sheffield. it was just full of not, well, there was American football fans in there, but it was full of like students just noticing it. It was busy. So they were like there at three in the morning just
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:So yeah, loads of funny Super Bowl stories from the UK for
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah, and we could probably do a couple of episodes on them and they would have to be definitely in the rated, explicit version of this show as well, some of them. Um, but yeah, looking forward to next Sunday and, uh, looking forward to the game in spite of the fact that many people think it'll be a one sided affair. So I wanted to get both of your thoughts on whether you agree that the Seahawks are a prohibitive favorite and deservedly so, or whether you think the Patriots do have a genuine chance in this one. With Mike Vrabel. So I'm gonna start with you, James, and your thoughts on the game.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah, I, I certainly give'em a chance. I know they're pretty much being written off. Um. Obviously all signs point towards Seahawks and they deserve to be pretty heavy favorites in this one. I'd say based on what we've seen season and throughout the playoffs, they'd look like they haven't really got too many weaknesses the patriots haven't really been far on all cylinders going through this playoff run has, it's been much taught about the luck they've had carrying on from the regular season in terms of maybe who they face and the quarterbacks they faced, uh, in this playoff run. Um, but. Sometimes. A team just doesn't turn up and if the Seahawks aren't on it, Patriots are the exact sort of team that are so well coached that would jump on any mistakes. And if they're not on it, they will be punished by the Patriots. They just look like the best coach team probably. There's simple things where I, there was. Drake May was running for a, I think it's towards the end of the half, like second left, and Ray had made sure he was right there next to the ref of, um, a timeout straight away. Right there. Knew that happen. You don't see that all the time with coaches and managing time all that well. think they're well prepared for anything. And if Seahawks are. Play as they have been, they will destroy the Patriots. But if they're not, um, the Patriots are well equipped to take advantage, I would say.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:It's a good shout, actually. Interesting. I think that that, that. Vegas might have factored that in a little bit. The variable kind of factor, the, the experience as a player winning, winning these big games because it's only a four and a half point spread, which would probably surprise a few people who probably think the sea should be a bigger favorite. Um, Lee, what do you think about how kind of likely it is that the Patriots can either keep it close or actually pull it up self.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Yeah, really quick, firstly,'cause we didn't do a post game with the championship games because I think we're all so busy, but I'm a little bit. Uh, in the matchup overall, but it's still, it's still gonna be an intriguing one. I'd love to have seen our bracket of like the Rams bills. I think that'd have been a bomb burner. This feels a bit, a little bit more defensive kind of game. Say Seattle, I, I, I have them as pretty strong favorites. When, when you look at, when you look at. Their team in general and just how Drake Mays played in the pace season. Really obviously had an incredible year, but he's been far from flawless as he, so I feel like we could have easily got Rams, Broncos Bowl in a, in a different, you know, with just a couple of plays gone different, but over overall this should be, this should be a decent watch and I'm rooting for Seattle. the Patriots have a chance? Yeah, I think they do. Uh, everyone is still waiting for that bad game from Sam Donald. It hasn't really happened yet. I not sure I see it now with just how confidently he's playing, so we'll see. Um, I think Drake may would have to play out his skin like a kind of surprising performance from him, from what we've seen in the postseason so far, and especially against that defense. He'd have to almost have a faultless game for them to have a good chance.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah, I think just been thinking about it and. You mentioned the Broncos, um, Panthers, super Bowl, Josh, I believe The Panthers are pretty fa heavy favorites in that one and just did not show up and the Broncos destroyed them. That's the only thing I could point to where is there some kind of freak kind of situation where they just don't turn up and they and the Patriots. Pull out a win. seen it happen. Um, I think Panther's here, it says there were six point favorites in that one. so you, you never know. I think people are writing them off, but it's a big occasion. Um, not somewhere Sam Donald's been before either. Well, neither's d Drake may, but, Ray Bull has obviously a bit more experience than my McDonald. Yeah. I dunno. I wouldn't, I wouldn't rule them out.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:I'd be surprised to see New England score more than 21 or 24 kind of. Range in this, in this
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:That's what, and I just, I just dunno if I can see Seattle scoring under 20 points. So in my head it'd have to be a weird game script for, for this to
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:be an upset, an upset victory. But as you said that, it's not like the line is 10 or anything crazy. Is it? So there's obviously some, some people thinking it could be
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:a close game.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah, agreed. And actually when Seattle won their Super Bowl against the Broncos before they were underdogs in that one and that was 43 8 or something. There's an absolute blowout, wasn't it? They, they destroyed them. Um.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:New York one?
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah. Yeah. The New York. So I, I, um, I agree, I I what you said, Lee, about May would have to play kind of a flawless game. I think if New England win this, then he's MVP. Like that's the only way that it basically, like as in the game, MVP, like he, he, he, he, he will be, if they win this game, he's the game. MVP, I don't see how Seattle don't score. A few actually
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:can I throw out my. Early Super Bowl. MVP,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:go on.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Jackson Smith in jba.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Shocker.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:with.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Is, is he the favorite or is it Donald or
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:No, it'd be the quarterbacks.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:It it's, he must be the next favorite though. Right?
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Um,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:would be a bit, yeah, the wide receiver that
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:I'm basically saying it's not a hot take.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Not get a, yeah, it's not a
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:I'm not saying it's that hot, but
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Oh, okay. Okay.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:It's usually the callback. But
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:All pro receivers pretty good. Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:in terms of M, in terms of MVP, that they just give in the league that, is that just for regular season? That's correct. Isn't it? Like
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:All right, fine. I'll, I'll go with Jake Bobo.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:There you go.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Fuck yeah.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:No, no, I'm only watching you off. It's, I'm assuming it's like callback, callback, running back, running back, and then it's hitting after that, probably
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:I'll
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:so.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:for you.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Fair enough.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Bill will be up there. Um, yeah, I, I can't believe they, what Stafford done to that Seahawks team Twice. Incredible. Really?'cause no other callback has come close, have they? To doing anything against him and he'd done it twice so. Yeah, that was, that was a really good NFC championship game. But can Drake may put up any kind of performance resembling that? I, I can't see it, so I feel like they'd have to keep it low scoring
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Maybe a turnover or two.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah. Yeah. Okay. I mean, I, I, I dunno if I told you with you that I'm, I, uh. Guest hosted our friend Brett's podcast this week, um, which should be coming out at some point before the Super Bowl, um, because he wanted a neutral host, obviously as a Patriots fan. So you wanna see me, I know you'll see me as well.'cause that was a video video podcast, quite a late night one where I kind of did a few hits for him. Um, and I can't really go against my. Prediction there. I'm not the sort of fell to hedge across different podcasts. And I did say in that one that I thought Seattle would win this kind of going away'cause of their strength and how well-rounded a team that they are. Um, and I think May's just got a horrible matchup against that defense. Just terrible.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Has he played very well? This postseason though? Drake may not, I just don't think he's, he's done. Okay. Obviously,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:played like that well, has he? So. What else to see
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:He hasn't played amazingly. The, the last game was, was hard for anyone to kind of shine in that environment in terms of the weather, obviously. But like, yeah, he, he has, he's been, um, loose with the ball in the previous game against that, in that stupid, crazy Texans game. So, um,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:third kind of elite defenses coming up against in a row.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:mm,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:fair for him,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:yeah, very true.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:either, so he's had a bit of a tough slate.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:He has, uh, my final prediction. I say final. Maybe I'll change my mind next Saturday after the trivia. But, uh, my final prediction at this point at least is Seahawks win 30 to 10. So a very, very comfortable victory. Um, I hope it's a great game for everyone that's, you know, neutrals and, and it's a bit closer than that, but I can't see it unfortunately.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:You are probably right. Um, I need to get more excited for it hopefully this week because I think we're all hoping for that different matchup. So hopefully in the buildup, watch a bit of content, get ready for it. We obviously have a special day plan, Josh.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Not just you and I, just to be clear. We do, I mean, you'll be excited when we play a bit of, bit of five on five on Saffron Walden Common, or whatever, you know, get the, I would need to make sure I, I pump up the pig skin ready for that.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:I'm excited.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Um, you, are you gonna be my tight end in that one, or
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah, sure. Yeah. Tight end slash safety, I think depending on which side, two-way player as you know.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Bates?
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah. Oh God, wow. Yeah. Probably about right. Lee, what are your plans for the big game and your, what's your prediction as well, the final score prediction?
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:I am probably gonna attend the same friends party that I attended last year because they do a good job and loads of, uh, feed and drink on, and then. bring a dish and it was quite good fun, so I'll probably do that. That said, they are Patriots fans. That's a bit of annoying when someone has that much of a rooting interest in the game. It was, it's a bit more easy when it's just kind of mingling, watching the game. But yeah, I'll probably do that. that should be good. I actually took Monday off, so maybe I'll, maybe I'll make it a decent one. I feel like I needed a long weekend after the
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Nice.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:so I was like, I'll take a, take a personal day, a Monday
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Good for you. Good for you. James, you, I forgot about this. You mentioned yesterday in the pub something, which I didn't fact check, but thought was pretty interesting about the Super Bowl be the day after the Super Bowl being the statistically the biggest sick day in the uk.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah, I saw this, a clip. Have you seen the clips of that? Have you
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah,
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:of that commentator that keeps doing the rounds?
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:yeah, yeah. Gavin.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:it was him. He was on a podcast. He had the info on that. Um, the past two years, apparently Super Bowl has been the biggest sick day in the uk.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:So I believe it.'cause we, when when you told me I, I didn't, but then I thought, well. It's too obvious to do other days, right? Like you don't do it on an obvious day. That's like the day after. Like you know, the one after Boxing Day, if that's a working day or something.'cause everyone just knows it. But the Super Bowl is very popular over here, but not like ubiquitous for everyone. So I can see it. I can definitely see it. The lack of sleep thing.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah, I.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:It's also in that kind of range where people have worked five weeks since Christmas, haven't had
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:and are quite miserable. So
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:to, to maximize that. Maybe it won't be this year in a World Cup in North America year,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah, that's it. England games was gonna be the obvious one after an England game or whatever of a big, big victory. But just in case you are listening, my boss, I have got annual leave. So when, when I don't log on on that Monday, ask because I'm pottering back from Saffron Walden nicely.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:also off because of the same reason,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Ah, you go.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:so
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:That's all right then.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:I am gonna try and listen to some podcasts as a week progress to get me more in the mood for I since the, uh. The title games last week. It's always weird that fortnight in between anyway, isn't it? But I
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Hmm.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:I've not listened to anything.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Yeah. Toned out.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Don't.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:some of my, uh, favorite podcasts in as we get into the middle of the week here to get up for the game a little bit more.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Well, don't spend, make sure you've got enough time for the trivia though.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Well
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:yeah, Lee, you know,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:into it.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:come
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah, true.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Get some time aside. Settle down.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:I'm excited.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Have a little coffee. Get the
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah,
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:the trivia sorted.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:you, you guys are gonna be going head to head unless we're inviting anyone else on. So if I
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Uh, don't fancy my chances in that one.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:you're gonna get brushing up.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:we could, um, we could see if, uh, we could see if anyone wants to join us. Miles will be on UK time,
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Yeah.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:so he, he's
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:back, isn't he?
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:he's flying back. Yeah. So, yeah. That's a shame.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Is he flying back for this,
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah. Yeah.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Is it just for this, it's not just for this though, is it?
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:It, that's the, it is the, it was the inciting factor. He's working from the UK for a week. He has to pick a week to do it. And he was like, well, this is the one. So,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:nice.
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Fair enough.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:yeah. Um, no, I look forward to it. I look forward to it now anyway. I, I have to go shortly to one, to, to sort some stuff out. Two, to pour myself, yeah. Have a brownie and pour myself another single malt. But, uh,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Nice as
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:you, if, if you guys.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:as we're together.'cause I think there's a good, good ending anyway, but
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:I'll be the judge of that.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:it's up to you. We can, we can stay James, if you want, we can stay. Um, I've got, what are we gonna do? We're gonna have a little post Super Bowl, maybe a post-game Super Bowl pod
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:break. And then early March to mid-March we'll get the old free agency list
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:Oh yeah,
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:And we'll get, we'll get into
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:I've already got my list, Lee.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:we're gonna have so many people outta contract, et cetera. So we'll have a lot to talk about then.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:we will.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:you
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Yeah.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:draft is what, late April, we'll be right there. I might take a trip to that as well, if I can
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Oh, nice. Oh, live, live draft pod.
ledders_1_02-01-2026_151113:Pit Pittsburgh,
james_1_02-01-2026_211115:oh yeah.
j_1_02-01-2026_211113:Okay, nice. Yeah, that'd be good. No, that sounds good. In terms of a schedule, I mean, any break in obvious break in news, maybe international game news or something like that, we could jump on or big signings, but it's unlikely to happen relatively soon after the Super Bowl, I guess. So fair shout. Let's do a, a trivia one before the game and then a, a wrap up one like you say, and then a little break. Um. Until then. Nice. Okay, well I will, uh, see you both next weekend for that final show before the Super Bowl itself. But until next time, hail. I.
