--> 00:00:35.121 However, the main thrust of the book is to encourage God's people. 00:00:35.121 --> 00:00:38.469 So before we get to the encouragement, we're going to take a step back. 00:00:38.469 --> 00:00:42.088 Even before we get to the who, when, where, what and why, we're going to quickly look at how the book of Zechariah is structured and then how it communicates. 00:00:42.088 --> 00:00:47.490 And when I say how and why, I'm going to quickly look at how the book of Zechariah is structured and then how it communicates. 00:00:47.490 --> 00:00:52.564 And when I say how it communicates, I'm just simply referring to the genre of the book. 00:00:52.564 --> 00:00:56.351 So how is the book of Zechariah structured? 00:00:57.274 --> 00:01:03.789 In our English Bibles we have 14 chapters, and those 14 chapters can be divided into three main sections. 00:01:03.789 --> 00:01:06.674 Part one is chapters one through six. 00:01:06.674 --> 00:01:09.323 Part two, chapters seven and eight. 00:01:09.323 --> 00:01:13.171 And part three, chapters nine through 14. 00:01:13.171 --> 00:01:14.521 I'll say that one more time. 00:01:14.521 --> 00:01:22.484 Part one is chapters one through six, part two, chapters seven and eight, and part three, chapters nine through 14. 00:01:22.484 --> 00:01:32.909 Part one opens with this call to repentance and then from there it moves on to a series of eight night visions that the Lord shows Zechariah. 00:01:32.909 --> 00:01:35.353 Part 2, we have two sermons. 00:01:35.353 --> 00:01:39.549 The first sermon can be found in chapter 7, and second oracle, chapters 12 through 14. 00:01:51.155 --> 00:01:55.111 That's the basic outline of how Zechariah is structured. 00:01:56.040 --> 00:02:05.451 As for how the book communicates, I mentioned that there are eight visions in part one of Zechariah, and you can think of those visions as a series of dreams happening in one night of Zachariah. 00:02:05.451 --> 00:02:07.838 And you can think of those visions as a series of dreams happening in one night. 00:02:07.838 --> 00:02:15.981 If you've ever had multiple dreams in one night, a lot of times you don't remember everything, and And so the first part is just picture, picture, picture, picture, picture, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, and it's kind of like what is this, what's that, what's this and what that? 00:02:27.149 --> 00:02:34.070 And these pictures do leave a lot of room for questions and we're going to look at some of them right now. 00:02:34.070 --> 00:02:39.826 So look with me to Zechariah, chapter 1. the horns that scattered Judah, israel and Jerusalem. 00:03:00.211 --> 00:03:02.828 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 00:03:02.828 --> 00:03:05.606 I asked what are they coming to do? 00:03:05.606 --> 00:03:10.513 He replied these are the horns that scattered Judah so no one could raise his head. 00:03:10.513 --> 00:03:20.243 These craftsmen have come to terrify them, to cut off the horns of the nation that raised a horn against the land of Judah, to scatter it. 00:03:21.086 --> 00:03:27.739 Here's another example you can look at chapter 5 and read verses 5 through 11. will be placed on its pedestal. 00:04:30.908 --> 00:04:40.351 A lot of weird images, but without getting too much into it, all of the visions ultimately embody in symbolic form what God plans to do the oracles use a little bit more poetic language Now, even though the visions and the oracles themselves demonstrate a rather abstract form of communication. 00:05:06.983 --> 00:05:15.466 We do see, in the two sermons found in chapters 7 and 8, very clear communication that leaves little room for question. 00:05:16.548 --> 00:05:20.903 So listen to these words from Zechariah 7, verses 8 and 10. Lord of armies. 00:05:56.225 --> 00:06:03.024 So I have resolved again in these days to do what is good to Jerusalem and the house of Judah. 00:06:03.024 --> 00:06:04.947 Don't be afraid. 00:06:04.947 --> 00:06:07.333 These are the things you must do. 00:06:07.333 --> 00:06:21.713 Speak truth to one another, make true and sound decisions within your city gates, do not plot evil in your hearts against your neighbor and do not love perjury, for I hate all of this. 00:06:21.713 --> 00:06:24.324 This is the Lord's declaration. 00:06:25.528 --> 00:06:31.995 On one level, this book communicates in a way that's not the most straightforward, but in other parts it is clear. 00:06:31.995 --> 00:06:37.053 And so what makes Zechariah a difficult book is that it essentially just mixes genres. 00:06:37.053 --> 00:06:44.512 But broadly speaking, if the book did have one genre, it would be futuristic prophecy. 00:06:44.512 --> 00:06:52.127 It's almost apocalyptic in that it is simply unveiling the spiritual realities behind the physical world. 00:06:52.127 --> 00:06:59.213 Futuristic prophecy helps us understand how God is going to work out his eternal plan of salvation. 00:06:59.213 --> 00:07:01.701 That's just, briefly, the how. 00:07:02.101 --> 00:07:07.934 Moving on to the who, who was Zechariah and who was his audience? 00:07:07.934 --> 00:07:11.230 Let's look at Zechariah, chapter 1, verse 1. 00:07:11.230 --> 00:07:21.586 Verse 1 says In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah. 00:07:21.586 --> 00:07:27.351 Lord came to the prophet Zechariah, son of Barakaya, son of Edo. 00:07:27.351 --> 00:07:31.235 For starters, zechariah was a prophet. 00:07:31.235 --> 00:07:40.249 People did not have immediate access to the word of God in the Old Testament like we do today. 00:07:40.249 --> 00:07:42.156 When we want to hear God speak today, all we have to do is go to his written word. 00:07:42.156 --> 00:08:00.694 We have the fully inspired word of God at our fingertips in our Bibles today, but in the Old Testament times, the writer of Hebrews tells us this long ago, god spoke to our ancestors by the prophets, at different times and in different ways. 00:08:00.694 --> 00:08:05.848 Prophets were individuals that God used to speak directly to his people. 00:08:05.848 --> 00:08:11.685 Prophets were God's spokesmen, and we see this very clearly in verse 1. 00:08:11.685 --> 00:08:16.060 Zechariah was one who received the word of the Lord. 00:08:16.060 --> 00:08:20.466 Zechariah was a prophet, but he was not only a prophet. 00:08:20.466 --> 00:08:26.954 We also see in verse 1 that he was the son of Barakiah and the son of Edo. 00:08:27.896 --> 00:08:31.326 Now most of you are probably wondering who the heck are those guys? 00:08:31.326 --> 00:08:38.272 If you turn to Nehemiah 12, you don't have to turn there, but we're given a list of names in Nehemiah, chapter 12. 00:08:38.272 --> 00:08:47.958 And in those list of names you have a list of individuals and families who represent priests and Levites. 00:08:47.958 --> 00:08:53.839 And in verse 4 and 16 of chapter 12, you'll see the names Edo and Berechiah. 00:08:53.839 --> 00:09:00.778 Zechariah was a descendant from a family of priests and he therefore was most likely a priest as well. 00:09:01.700 --> 00:09:07.950 And moving on to Zechariah's audience, you can say that Zechariah had a shared audience. 00:09:07.950 --> 00:09:16.926 He shared his audience with one prophet by the name of Haggai Haggai comes before this book and then another prophet by the name of Malachi, which is followed by him. 00:09:16.926 --> 00:09:26.721 All of these prophets were speaking to Israelites who were coming out of Babylonian captivity, were speaking to Israelites who were coming out of Babylonian captivity. 00:09:26.721 --> 00:09:33.764 The audience of Zechariah's ministry did not include every single Israelite, while there were many who left Babylon to return to the land that the Lord had promised them. 00:09:33.764 --> 00:09:39.384 Sadly, there were many who decided to stay in Babylonian captivity after 70 years. 00:09:39.384 --> 00:09:44.964 Those who had decided to stay were those who had grown complacent with being in enemy territory. 00:09:44.964 --> 00:09:51.467 Those who stayed in Babylon essentially represented those who lacked faith in God's promises. 00:09:51.467 --> 00:10:01.847 But the ones who left Babylon to return back to the land of promise, they were the ones who were eagerly anticipating the fulfillment of God's promises to them. 00:10:01.847 --> 00:10:07.259 The Israelites returning back to Jerusalem were excited to see God move on their rehab. 00:10:07.259 --> 00:10:18.918 However, the Israelites who returned home were met with much difficulty and, generally speaking, when anyone is met with any kind of difficulty, there is going to be some discouragement along the way. 00:10:18.918 --> 00:10:26.049 So Zechariah's audience was a discouraged group of people and his message is tailored to them. 00:10:26.049 --> 00:10:32.505 Moving on to the when, when did Zechariah's ministry take place? 00:10:33.207 --> 00:10:34.436 I'm going to answer this in two ways. 00:10:34.436 --> 00:10:38.844 One is going to be very big picture and then one is going to be specific. 00:10:38.844 --> 00:10:47.863 If you heard of any Doug's sermons on, if you heard Doug's sermon on Haggai, he touched on three different periods of Israel's history. 00:10:47.863 --> 00:10:51.918 There was the pre-exilic, exilic and post-exilic. 00:10:51.918 --> 00:10:54.566 Pre-exilic is most of the Old Testament. 00:10:54.566 --> 00:11:00.447 Then you have the exilic and then you move on to the post-exilic and Zechariah is ministering around the post-exilic. 00:11:00.447 --> 00:11:08.038 But another way you can grasp the Old Testament timeline is by following the temple. 00:11:08.038 --> 00:11:14.979 The reason why I want to offer this is because the temple in Israel is a big part of Zechariah's ministry. 00:11:14.979 --> 00:11:19.995 So the history of the Old Testament history can be divided into four temples. 00:11:19.995 --> 00:11:27.941 You have one, the Garden of Eden, and you have the tabernacle, solomon's temple, and then you have the temple after Solomon's. 00:11:29.144 --> 00:11:42.667 And you could be wondering, you don't recall an actual temple in the Garden of Eden and there technically wasn't, there wasn't a physical building, but the temple always symbolized God's meeting place with humanity. 00:11:42.667 --> 00:11:49.701 Before sin came into the world, god could freely meet with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. 00:11:49.701 --> 00:11:53.638 So the Garden of Eden was essentially a type of temple. 00:11:53.638 --> 00:11:58.129 The next temple that we see is the tabernacle in Exodus. 00:11:58.129 --> 00:12:09.438 This tabernacle was built around 1450 BC and it was essentially a big tent that served as a portable temple While Israel was wandering in the desert. 00:12:09.438 --> 00:12:14.948 For 40 years God's presence was with them by virtue of the tabernacle. 00:12:16.154 --> 00:12:18.683 Fast forward many years to King David. 00:12:18.683 --> 00:12:22.034 David wants to build a more permanent tabernacle. 00:12:22.034 --> 00:12:24.043 He wants to build a house for the Lord. 00:12:24.043 --> 00:12:29.047 And God says you have too much blood in your hands, but your son will do it. 00:12:29.047 --> 00:12:38.210 So in 2 Samuel 7, the Lord says one of your sons will build that tabernacle, that temple. 00:12:38.210 --> 00:12:45.244 And so in 957 BC, solomon builds the first temple. 00:12:45.244 --> 00:12:50.777 Think of this as the third temple of the four in the Old Testament. 00:12:50.777 --> 00:12:54.063 This temple was gorgeous, it was absolutely beautiful. 00:12:54.063 --> 00:12:58.581 It essentially became a symbol of national pride for the Israelites. 00:12:58.581 --> 00:13:04.884 But keep in mind, the true purpose of the temple was for worship and for the dwelling place of the Lord. 00:13:04.884 --> 00:13:18.986 Sadly, about 400 years later, in the year 586 BC, solomon's temple is destroyed, jerusalem is left to ruins and the Israelites were taken into captivity by the Babylonians for 70 years. 00:13:19.815 --> 00:13:25.748 And then that brings us into the year of 520 BC, where Zechariah begins his ministry. 00:13:25.748 --> 00:13:37.606 His ministry begins way after the destruction of Solomon's temple, which is the third temple of the Old Testament, and it starts right at the beginning of the temple that followed that, the fourth temple. 00:13:37.606 --> 00:13:42.787 This is the big picture for where Zechariah's ministry takes place. 00:13:42.787 --> 00:13:52.148 As for the smaller picture, the book of Zachariah gives us multiple specific dates of his ministry, but for tonight I'm just going to look at one. 00:13:52.148 --> 00:13:58.607 But before we look at Zachariah's specific date, you can quickly look with me to Haggai, chapter 1. 00:13:58.607 --> 00:14:07.956 That's page 839. 00:14:07.956 --> 00:14:19.461 And you have these words in the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Haggai. 00:14:19.461 --> 00:14:36.684 Zechariah 1.1 starts off like this In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah, son of Berechiah, son of Edo. 00:14:37.794 --> 00:14:47.599 And one of the main reasons why I said that Zechariah had the same audience as Haggai is because Zechariah started his ministry literally only two months as Haggai is because Zechariah started his ministry literally only two months after Haggai. 00:14:47.599 --> 00:14:59.042 Now, moving on to the where and what when did Zechariah minister and what was the focus of his ministry? 00:14:59.042 --> 00:15:05.071 Haggai and Zechariah both ministered in Jerusalem. 00:15:05.071 --> 00:15:13.426 Now, while they both focused on the rebuilding of the temple, zechariah's concern was more to the heart of his listeners. 00:15:13.426 --> 00:15:29.645 Zechariah's message was twofold On one side, he called his listeners to return back to the Lord, and Zechariah wanted his listeners to know that God was not just interested in the rebuilding of the temple, which dealt with worship on an outward level. 00:15:29.645 --> 00:15:33.701 In some sense, he was also interested in worship on an inward level. 00:15:34.803 --> 00:15:39.258 Listen to these words from chapter 1, verses 1 through 3. 00:15:39.258 --> 00:15:46.870 In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah, son of Berechiah, son of Edo. 00:15:46.870 --> 00:15:51.586 The Lord was extremely angry with your ancestors. 00:15:51.586 00:17:18.840 On one side, zechariah's message was that God on the other side of Zechariah's message, that God was completely sovereign and, regardless of how things seemed, god was still a covenant-keeping God. 00:17:18.840 --> 00:17:27.971 Moving on to the why, which is the last of part one why was this Zechariah's message and why was it significant? 00:17:29.195 --> 00:17:33.905 I mentioned earlier that Zechariah was speaking to Israelites who were coming out of Babylonian captivity. 00:17:33.905 --> 00:17:38.423 After 78 years, these Israelites were excited to be going back home. 00:17:38.423 --> 00:17:43.207 They were excited to reclaim their name, their land and to start rebuilding the temple. 00:17:43.207 --> 00:17:47.481 Excited to reclaim their name, their land and to start rebuilding the temple. 00:17:47.481 --> 00:17:50.050 However, when the Israelites got there, they had to essentially start from scratch. 00:17:50.050 --> 00:18:07.718 There were Samaritans who had made themselves at home while they were in captivity, and so when the Israelites came back, they had a lot of opposition from the Samaritans once they started to build the temple, and so the Israelites were faced with much difficulty when they were trying to resettle. 00:18:07.718 --> 00:18:19.909 And so it was only natural for the people of God to wonder where God was and to wonder what he was doing, because, judging from appearance, nothing seemed to be going as planned. 00:18:21.516 --> 00:18:25.348 Now, even though things didn't seem to be in Israel's favor. 00:18:25.348 --> 00:18:35.122 The reason why Zechariah called them to return to God first and foremost was because the whole reason why things were looking bad in the first place was because of their own sin. always quick to turn to other gods of the other nations rather than trusting and worshiping the one true God. 00:18:50.105 --> 00:18:55.106 That is why we have those strong words in verses 3 and 4 of in addition to that, god's people needed to be reminded that God would dwell with them again. 00:19:37.948 --> 00:19:44.988 Remember that the temple served as a symbol for God's meeting place with his people. 00:19:44.988 --> 00:19:57.931 And at the time of Zachariah's ministry, the second temple wasn't finished yet, and so the question that would have lingered in their hearts would have been is said that in the beginning, zechariah is to be a book of encouragement. 00:21:41.627 --> 00:21:48.119 It ultimately takes us beyond the immediate and helps us to see what the Lord is doing at large. 00:21:48.119 --> 00:21:58.207 And with that said, now moving into our second part, and this will just be three major encouragements that we can receive from this book. 00:21:58.207 --> 00:22:04.663 Encouragement number one God is abundantly gracious. 00:22:04.663 --> 00:22:07.329 God is abundantly gracious. 00:22:08.296 --> 00:22:16.644 Listen to these words from chapter one, verses two and three the Lord was extremely angry with your ancestors, so tell the people. 00:22:16.644 --> 00:22:18.635 This is what the Lord of armies says. 00:22:18.635 --> 00:22:20.698 Return to me. 00:22:20.698 --> 00:22:29.086 This is the declaration of the Lord of armies and I will return to you. 00:22:30.568 --> 00:22:39.028 If you understand Old Testament history correctly, you will understand that God's anger towards his people is a fair and righteous anger. 00:22:39.028 --> 00:22:56.906 One of the best illustrations that helps us to understand this is a faithful and loyal spouse finding out that her husband or his wife is having an affair, and it is an illustration that we see in scripture, where God makes a covenant with his people, as a husband would with his wife. 00:22:56.906 --> 00:23:11.248 God promises to bless, to cherish and to love his bride, but the sad theme of Israel's history is that, instead of it being the faithful wife in return of God's goodness, they play the prostitute instead. 00:23:11.248 --> 00:23:16.826 Keep in mind that we are well along in Israel's history when these words were given. 00:23:16.826 --> 00:23:17.556 That we just read. 00:23:17.556 --> 00:23:23.157 And again, the reason why Israel fell into captivity in the first place was because of their own sin. 00:23:23.157 --> 00:23:30.700 If God wanted to, he could have left them in captivity and he would have been fair and just in doing so, but he doesn't do that. 00:23:30.700 --> 00:23:39.845 In his mercy, god freed the Israelites from captivity so that they may freely worship him again and so that they may be known as his special people. 00:23:41.654 --> 00:23:49.760 However, along in that journey of God slowly working out his promises, his people were losing hope in him. 00:23:49.760 --> 00:23:52.954 They had stopped working towards the building of the temple. 00:23:52.954 --> 00:23:58.558 They stopped looking forward to God's promises being fulfilled. 00:23:58.558 --> 00:24:13.229 So, as mentioned earlier, so as mentioned earlier, zechariah was speaking to a group of discouraged people, but the words of encouragement are these, found in verse 3. 00:24:13.229 --> 00:24:19.032 He says to the people of Israel return to me and I will return to you. 00:24:19.032 --> 00:24:29.796 Return to me and I will return to you. 00:24:29.796 --> 00:24:31.098 Return to me and I will return to you. 00:24:31.118 --> 00:24:32.903 We sometimes tend to focus only on the condition of that statement. 00:24:32.903 --> 00:24:36.068 We like to focus on what we must do in order for God to return to us. 00:24:36.068 --> 00:24:41.261 But may I encourage us to consider more the grace of God in this statement. 00:24:41.261 --> 00:24:45.930 Consider the promise and the promiser more than yourself. 00:24:45.930 --> 00:24:52.867 Consider the fact that God has absolutely no reason to return to you or to return to us. 00:24:52.867 --> 00:24:57.522 He does not need us, but in actuality we need him. 00:24:57.522 --> 00:25:08.527 So the abundant grace of our God is revealed in the promise is that he will return to us when we return to him. 00:25:08.527 --> 00:25:17.166 That was the hope of Israel when they continued to build the temple and that is our hope when we continue to live our life in this fallen world. 00:25:17.166 --> 00:25:21.365 Return to God and he will return to you, amen. 00:25:22.715 --> 00:25:23.619 Encouragement number two. 00:25:23.619 --> 00:25:27.440 This next one may seem a little bit funny, but it is true. 00:25:27.440 --> 00:25:30.346 We see it in Zechariah and we see it in the rest of scripture. 00:25:30.346 --> 00:25:36.263 Encouragement number two Sometimes God is hard to understand. 00:25:36.263 --> 00:25:39.809 Sometimes God is hard to understand. 00:25:39.809 --> 00:25:48.749 One of the first things that stood out to me when I was reading this book was how often Zechariah was asking questions about the visions he was seeing. 00:25:48.749 --> 00:25:53.362 He was constantly trying to understand what God was showing him. 00:25:53.362 --> 00:25:57.356 And I'm just going to read a couple of verses from Zechariah to show you. 00:25:59.559 --> 00:26:01.323 Chapter 1, verses 8 and 9. 00:26:01.323 --> 00:26:05.950 I looked out in the night and saw a man riding on a chestnut horse. 00:26:05.950 --> 00:26:09.144 He was standing among the myrtle trees in the valley. 00:26:09.144 --> 00:26:13.164 Behind him were chestnut, brown and white horses. 00:26:13.164 --> 00:26:17.345 I asked what are these, my Lord? 00:26:17.345 --> 00:26:20.884 Verses 18 and 19 of chapter 1. 00:26:20.884 --> 00:26:23.683 Then I looked up and saw four horns. 00:26:23.683 --> 00:26:29.000 So I asked the angel who was speaking with me what are these? 00:26:29.000 --> 00:26:32.986 Chapter four, verses 11 through 13. 00:26:32.986 --> 00:26:38.384 I asked him what are the two olive trees on the right and left of the lampstand? 00:26:38.384 --> 00:26:46.701 And I questioned him further what are the two streams of the olive trees from which the golden oil is pouring through the two golden conduits? 00:26:46.701 --> 00:26:50.934 Then he inquired of me don't you know what these are? 00:26:50.934 --> 00:27:10.709 No, my Lord, I replied and one more, chapter five, verses five and six, when the angel who was speaking with me came forward and told me look up and see what this is that is approaching, and so I asked what is it? 00:27:12.289 --> 00:27:17.813 I have to be honest and say that I can truly empathize with Zachariah from these verses that I just read. 00:27:17.813 --> 00:27:22.446 I felt like him as I was reading this book and preparing for this message. 00:27:22.446 --> 00:27:27.560 But all of that to say is that sometimes God is hard to understand. 00:27:27.560 --> 00:27:38.477 We not only see this in Zechariah, but when we get to the New Testament and Jesus is giving parables, his disciples often go to him and say can you explain this to us? 00:27:40.200 --> 00:27:53.578 Second Peter Peter, when speaking about the Apostle Paul, he says Also regard the patience of the Lord as salvation, just as our dear brother Paul has written to you according to the wisdom given to him. 00:27:53.578 --> 00:27:57.686 He speaks about these things in all his letters. 00:27:57.686 --> 00:28:01.022 There are some things hard to understand in them. 00:28:01.022 --> 00:28:08.207 The untaught and unstable will twist them to their own destruction, as they also do with the rest of scripture. 00:28:08.207 --> 00:28:15.284 So when I say that God is sometimes hard to understand, I'm not saying we can't understand God at all. 00:28:15.284 --> 00:28:31.430 What I am saying is that it is okay and normal for us, as limited and sinful creatures, to struggle as we try to comprehend an infinitely holy God whose ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts. 00:28:31.430 --> 00:28:39.066 I heard Pastor Michael put it like this we can't fully know God, but we can truly know God. 00:28:39.066 --> 00:28:55.667 And this brings me to my last encouragement for this evening, encouragement number three Jesus Christ is the sure fulfillment of the pictures, prophecies and promises in the book of Zechariah. 00:28:57.171 --> 00:29:11.310 Zechariah is one of the most quoted Old Testament books in the New Testament and so much time could be looking at all of the prophecies in this book, but for this evening I'm just going to wrap up with reading two more sections from Zechariah. 00:29:11.310 --> 00:29:21.096 One is a popular passage that really paints the picture of what Christ does for us as sinners, and the second is a verse that inspired the first song that we sang. 00:29:21.096 --> 00:29:23.252 There is a fountain filled with blood. 00:29:23.252 --> 00:29:26.575 So I'm going to read chapter 3, verses 1 through 4. 00:29:26.575 --> 00:29:33.297 And then from there I'll move on to chapter 13 and read verse 1. 00:29:36.006 --> 00:29:45.730 Then he showed me the high priest Joshua standing before the angel of the Lord, with Satan standing at his right hand, at his right side, to accuse him. 00:29:45.730 --> 00:29:49.405 The Lord said to Satan the Lord rebuke you, satan. 00:29:49.405 --> 00:29:52.796 May the Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you. 00:29:52.796 --> 00:29:57.612 Isn't this man a burning snake snatched from the fire? 00:29:57.612 --> 00:30:03.630 Now, joshua was dressed with filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. 00:30:04.692 --> 00:30:10.691 So the angel of the Lord spoke to those standing before him take off his filthy garments. 00:30:10.691 --> 00:30:19.972 Then he said to him see, I have removed your iniquity from you and I will clothe you with festive robes. 00:30:19.972 --> 00:30:24.846 Isn't this such a clear picture of what our Lord Jesus does for us? 00:30:24.846 --> 00:30:28.531 We once stood, condemned and accused. 00:30:28.531 --> 00:30:41.133 All of our works were nothing but filthy rags, absolutely no hope in and of ourselves, but God in and through his Son. 00:30:41.133 --> 00:30:49.590 He says see, I have removed your iniquity from you and I will clothe you in festive robes. 00:30:49.590 --> 00:30:56.736 The guilt of your sin is removed and you are now clothed in the righteousness of my Son. 00:30:56.736 --> 00:31:03.038 And for the last verse, chapter 13, verse 1. 00:31:04.286 --> 00:31:14.837 On that day, a fountain will be opened for the house of David, for the residents of Jerusalem, to wash away sin and impurity. 00:31:14.837 --> 00:31:24.971 Friends, it is the blood of Christ, and only the blood alone, that is the fountain that washes us and makes us clean and acceptable before
