00:03:24.588 --> 00:03:27.836 But there's a second volume that Luke writes about and what is that? 00:03:27.836 --> 00:03:36.748 After he had suffered, he also presented himself alive to them, by many convincing proofs appearing to them over a period of 40 days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 00:03:36.748 --> 00:03:46.092 So the rest of the book of Acts talks about the ongoing work of Jesus Christ, and tonight we're going to be able to discover more about that. 00:03:46.092 --> 00:04:12.092 And one of the things that I hope we all recognize as we do so is that we're not just having a historical look at the early church, but to be able to find ourselves included in this ongoing work of Jesus Christ, because we're part and parcel of that story that's ongoing yet to this day and I hope it shapes our attitude and understanding about how we do participate in that. 00:04:13.822 --> 00:04:23.488 One of the stories that I like to tell is a story about Sir Christopher Wren, who was the architect for the rebuilding of St Paul's Cathedral in London. 00:04:23.488 --> 00:04:25.213 It's a beautiful edifice. 00:04:25.213 --> 00:04:35.572 If you ever get an opportunity to go to London, I would highly encourage you taking some time to visit St Paul's Cathedral and, if you're not afraid of heights, to go up as high as you can go. 00:04:35.572 --> 00:04:48.134 There's a little whispering gallery there where you can hear one another and if you're really daring, you can make your way through the see-through ladders up to the outer ring and get a nice view of London from the outside. 00:04:48.134 --> 00:04:57.548 It's quite remarkable and one person was going through there and talking to some of the workers and he said what are you doing today? 00:06:03.732 --> 00:06:05.894 I'm showing up for a service. 00:06:05.894 --> 00:06:08.406 What are you doing today? 00:06:08.406 --> 00:06:13.471 Well, you might have something a little more noble than that to answer. 00:06:13.471 --> 00:06:20.930 Or you might say I'm a member of the body of Christ and I'm participating in the ongoing work of Jesus Christ. 00:06:21.980 --> 00:06:33.562 You see how perspective changes a lot of things, and so today, I hope that we'll be able to catch that glimpse, not just an understanding of the historical account of the book of Acts. 00:06:33.562 --> 00:06:49.785 So what we're going to look at are four aspects of the book of Acts, and in so doing, we're going to be going from front to back and front to back and front to back and front to back, because they're all intertwined. 00:06:49.785 --> 00:06:53.934 It's not like one thing and then another, and another and another. 00:06:53.934 --> 00:07:07.793 These aspects weave their way through the whole book of Acts, and so I'd like for us to get a flavor of all of them as we move, and I don't want to highlight each of them in a sort of chronological way. 00:07:07.793 --> 00:07:11.882 I'd like for us to be able to catch it and understand the layers of what's being said here. 00:07:12.303 --> 00:07:21.466 So we're going to look at the message of the church, the growth of the church, the focus of the church and then the breadth of the church. 00:07:21.466 --> 00:07:27.675 The message of the church talks about the proclamation of the early church. 00:07:27.675 --> 00:07:36.723 The growth obviously has geographical aspects, but there's more than just geographical growth going on in the book of Acts. 00:07:36.723 --> 00:07:41.994 The focus of the church what is it that they were primarily about? 00:07:41.994 --> 00:07:50.432 Obviously connected and a little nuanced from the message, but there's something there that we want to highlight that will help us in our day, I think. 00:07:50.432 --> 00:07:57.093 And then the breadth of the church who's included in this kingdom that Christ is building? 00:07:57.093 --> 00:07:58.742 So let's dive in. 00:07:58.822 --> 00:08:14.384 Let's start with the message of the church, and the book of Acts captures the essential proclamation of the early church, centering first of all on an understanding that God has acted in a way to fulfill promises from the Old Testament. 00:08:14.384 --> 00:08:36.224 So when you read the book of Acts and you catch a hold of the proclamation that's there, one of the things that you will see quite often are references back to the Old Testament and how those things that were promised some hundreds of years ago are now being enacted in fulfillment. 00:08:36.224 --> 00:08:38.729 That's quite an important thing. 00:08:38.729 --> 00:08:48.322 In fact, that was one of the things that really motivated me personally to begin to understand how the Old Testament and New Testament related to one another. 00:08:48.322 --> 00:09:20.350 I'd always thought of it in a more flat fashion, but when I read the book of Acts and started noting how often the Old Testament was quoted and how often the fulfillment of the Old Testament was spoken about, I said I need to understand this better, and so I started going back into the books that the apostles quote and began to wrestle with why did they use this verse and this passage to elucidate the Savior? 00:09:20.350 --> 00:09:28.041 It's not the sort of clear Isaiah 7, micah 5 kind of things that you hear right around Christmas time. 00:09:28.041 --> 00:09:30.025 They went places I wouldn't have expected. 00:09:30.025 --> 00:09:32.091 Why did they do that? 00:09:32.091 --> 00:09:33.280 Why did they go there? 00:09:33.280 --> 00:09:40.081 And so that drove me to really understand better how the Old Testament New Testament interact with each other. 00:09:40.081 --> 00:09:58.812 But one of the things we'll understand is that they were determined to express, particularly to the Jewish audience in front of them in the early chapters of the book of Acts, that God had acted, through Jesus Christ, in fulfillment of promises made many, many hundred years ago. 00:09:59.340 --> 00:10:00.725 So let's go to chapter 2. 00:10:00.725 --> 00:10:01.908 You'll see that. 00:10:01.908 --> 00:10:04.667 Chapter 2 and verse 30. 00:10:04.667 --> 00:10:09.961 There's a lot of places I could go. 00:10:09.961 --> 00:10:12.907 I'm just going to be very selective here, brothers and sisters. 00:10:12.986 --> 00:10:17.903 Verse 29, I can confidently speak to you about the patriarch David. 00:10:17.903 --> 00:10:22.692 He is both dead and buried and his tomb is with us to this day. 00:10:22.692 --> 00:10:35.592 And since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants on his throne and, seeing what was to come, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah. 00:10:35.592 --> 00:10:41.692 He was not abandoned in Hades and his flesh did not experience decay. 00:10:41.692 --> 00:10:47.192 You turn over to chapter 3 and go to verse 19. 00:10:47.192 --> 00:10:52.609 You will see something very, very similar. 00:10:52.609 --> 00:10:56.202 Verse 17,. 00:10:56.202 --> 00:11:00.922 Now, brothers and sisters, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your leaders also did. 00:11:00.922 --> 00:11:06.568 In this way, god fulfilled what he had predicted through the prophets that his Messiah would suffer. 00:11:06.568 --> 00:11:11.995 Therefore, repent and turn back so that your sins may be wiped out. 00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:25.630 And then it goes on to and you can see a number of places where there are, perhaps in your edition of the Bible, bolded print face to talk about Old Testament quotations of Scripture. 00:11:25.630 --> 00:11:32.970 So drop down just a little bit further in verse 24, right in that area. 00:11:32.970 --> 00:11:35.215 Well, we could back up a little bit to 21. 00:11:35.215 --> 00:11:42.225 Heaven must receive him until the time of restoration of all things which God spoke about through his holy prophets from the beginning. 00:11:42.225 --> 00:11:48.908 And Moses said the Lord, your God, will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. 00:11:48.908 --> 00:11:57.821 You must listen to him and to everything he tells you, and everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from the people. 00:11:57.821 --> 00:12:01.908 So the Jewish people were saying you really need to listen to Jesus. 00:12:01.908 --> 00:12:05.774 He is the one that God has sent to us. 00:12:07.020 --> 00:12:11.485 A little further down in the same chapter, verse 25,. 00:12:11.485 --> 00:12:20.248 You are sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors saying to Abraham all the families of the earth will be blessed through your offspring. 00:12:20.248 --> 00:12:28.513 God raised up his servant and sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each of you from your evil ways. 00:12:28.513 --> 00:12:32.168 What is the Abrahamic blessing to the world? 00:12:32.168 --> 00:12:36.451 Repentance and the reception of the Savior. 00:12:36.451 --> 00:12:39.729 That is how God blesses the nations. 00:12:39.729 --> 00:12:43.799 This is reinforced. 00:12:44.582 --> 00:12:49.740 We go to chapter 10 and we can find there in verse 43. 00:12:49.740 --> 00:13:00.993 In verse 42 it says that well, I'm going to keep doing this. 00:13:00.993 --> 00:13:10.063 Verse 40 god raised up this man on the third day and caused him to be seen, not by all the people, but by us, whom God appointed as witnesses who ate and drank with him. 00:13:10.063 --> 00:13:20.028 After he rose from the dead, he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be the judge of the living and the dead. 00:13:20.028 --> 00:13:30.514 All the prophets testify about him that, through his name, everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins. 00:13:30.514 --> 00:13:44.916 Over and over and, over and over again, calling out the life of Christ, the message and the proclamation in fulfillment of prophecies given. 00:13:48.860 --> 00:13:51.284 Message and the proclamation in fulfillment of prophecies given Paul in Acts. 00:13:51.284 --> 00:13:52.225 Chapter 26 makes mention of that. 00:13:52.225 --> 00:14:16.703 So, jumping right to the back or near the back, verses six and seven, where he's on trial, and he says this now I stand on trial because of the hope in what God promised to our ancestors, the promise our twelve tribes hope to reach as they earnestly serve him night and day. 00:14:16.703 --> 00:14:21.255 He said this is the fulfillment. 00:14:21.255 --> 00:14:30.975 They're looking for something, but they're not looking in the right place, and the place is the designated place of Jesus Christ himself. 00:14:30.975 --> 00:14:39.619 So the apostles understood that the arrival of the Savior was the culmination of God's promises given in the Old Testament. 00:14:39.619 --> 00:14:51.066 So what was the message and it's something we're very familiar with, and I thank God that we are what did the early church emphasize when they preached Christ? 00:14:51.066 --> 00:14:53.850 Did they emphasize his example? 00:14:53.850 --> 00:14:59.167 Did they emphasize the fact that he was a great teacher, philosopher? 00:14:59.167 --> 00:15:09.354 Did they emphasize that he was a wonderfully moral man who stood before us as an example of how to live a just and good life? 00:15:09.354 --> 00:15:12.379 What did they emphasize? 00:15:12.379 --> 00:15:17.249 Yeah, they emphasized the crucifixion for one. 00:15:17.249 --> 00:15:22.238 So let's jump back to the very front end of this book. 00:15:22.238 --> 00:15:29.969 So let's jump back to the very front end of this book Acts, chapter 2. 00:15:29.989 --> 00:15:42.870 It wounded us to know that the death of Christ was not some accident, but done in the determined plan of God, in Acts, chapter 2 and verse 23. 00:15:42.870 --> 00:15:48.379 Though he was delivered up according to God's determined plan and foreknowledge. 00:15:48.379 --> 00:15:55.726 You use lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him, and then it says that God raised him up from the dead. 00:15:55.726 --> 00:16:04.299 So there is very clearly a statement about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, chapter 3, verse 13. 00:16:04.299 --> 00:16:11.333 Fellow Israelites, why are you amazed at this? 00:16:11.333 --> 00:16:15.664 Why do you stare at us as though we had made him walk by our own power of godliness? 00:16:15.664 --> 00:16:27.777 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied before Pilate, though he had decided to release him. 00:16:27.777 --> 00:16:32.177 You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer released to you. 00:16:32.177 --> 00:16:41.730 You killed the source of life whom God raised from the dead, and we are witnesses of this, of this. 00:16:41.770 --> 00:16:43.232 Chapter 4, in verse 11,. 00:16:43.232 --> 00:17:05.486 It tells us here that Jesus is the stone rejected by you builders, which has become the cornerstone. 00:17:05.486 --> 00:17:09.693 And again back in the book of Acts, in chapter 26, paul confirms in verse 23 that Christ's suffering and resurrection were meant to bring light to both Jew and Gentile. 00:17:09.693 --> 00:17:11.416 He says this to this very day. 00:17:11.416 --> 00:17:30.232 I've had help from God and I stand and testify to both small and great, saying nothing other than what the prophets and Moses said would take place, that the Messiah would suffer and that, as the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles. 00:17:31.796 --> 00:17:34.205 So what is the message of the early church? 00:17:34.205 --> 00:17:46.451 It is a message of fulfillment that has at its center the crucifixion of Christ, and you've probably already gathered there's more to it than just that right. 00:17:46.451 --> 00:17:50.728 We've not only talked about the crucifixion, but we've also talked about the resurrection. 00:17:50.728 --> 00:17:59.972 I would dare say the book of Acts speaks as much, if not more, about the resurrection of Christ than even it does the cross of Christ. 00:17:59.972 --> 00:18:03.058 Let that sink in for a minute. 00:18:03.058 --> 00:18:10.835 The resurrection of Christ is a greater emphasis in the apostolic preaching than even the cross. 00:18:10.835 --> 00:18:18.111 There's something going on there that we, some 2,000 years later, need to pay more attention to. 00:18:21.049 --> 00:18:22.644 I won't take you back through those passages. 00:18:22.644 --> 00:18:25.726 You heard them but let me just quickly state a couple. 00:18:25.726 --> 00:18:33.318 Acts 2.24, it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him, so Christ was going to rise. 00:18:33.318 --> 00:18:45.769 Acts 2.31 and 32, peter explains that David foresaw the resurrection and affirmed that Jesus was not going to be abandoned to the grave and his body was not going to see decay. 00:18:45.769 --> 00:18:57.178 Acts, chapter 3 and verse 15, the people by the apostolic preaching are told you killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. 00:18:57.178 --> 00:19:07.474 And there's something more so, not just the death of Christ, not just the resurrection of Christ, but also the ascension of Christ. 00:19:08.646 --> 00:19:14.090 So let's go back to Acts, chapter two, for a second Verse 33. 00:19:14.090 --> 00:19:20.153 God has raised this Jesus. 00:19:20.153 --> 00:19:22.191 We're all witnesses of this. 00:19:22.191 --> 00:19:35.176 Therefore, since he has been exalted to the right hand of God and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, he has poured out what you both see and hear. 00:19:35.176 --> 00:19:39.170 For it was not David who ascended into the heavens, but he himself says. 00:19:39.170 --> 00:19:46.087 The Lord declared to my Lord Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool. 00:19:46.087 --> 00:19:55.413 Therefore, let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah. 00:19:55.413 --> 00:20:03.015 So there is a very clear proclamation of the ascension and exaltation of Jesus Christ. 00:20:04.646 --> 00:20:16.195 I don't know if you caught a little bit of what was just said there, but there's a little phrase that connects to the passage of Scripture we looked at this morning in Isaiah, chapter 32. 00:20:16.195 --> 00:20:26.096 It talked about the coming kingdom and the flourishing of new life when the Spirit is poured out on us. 00:20:26.096 --> 00:20:34.398 And how do the apostles here express what's happening in the book of Acts, in chapter 2? 00:20:34.398 --> 00:20:38.635 When the Spirit is poured out on us. 00:20:38.635 --> 00:20:48.545 It's almost the exact phrase us. 00:20:48.545 --> 00:20:49.227 It's almost the exact phrase. 00:20:49.227 --> 00:21:10.112 So the promises from the book of Isaiah, in chapter 32, that talk about the righteous king and the right realm that's full of justice and equity, has been inaugurated by the exalted Lord Jesus, who's poured out his spirit into this world through the proclamation of the apostles, chapter 3 and verse 13. 00:21:10.112 --> 00:21:20.844 The God of Abraham, isaac and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified his servant. 00:21:20.844 --> 00:21:26.931 Jesus has glorified his servant Jesus More. 00:21:26.931 --> 00:21:43.261 That's preached there, not just the crucifixion of Christ, not just the resurrection of Christ, not just the ascension and exaltation of Christ, but also his return and judgment. 00:21:45.505 --> 00:21:46.946 Acts, chapter three, verse 20 and 21. 00:21:46.946 --> 00:22:02.432 So just a little bit further down from what we just read, it says in verse 19, repent and turn back so that your sins may be wiped out, that seasons of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord and that he may send Jesus, who has been appointed for you, as the Messiah. 00:22:02.432 --> 00:22:12.224 Heaven must receive him until the time of the restoration of all things. 00:22:12.224 --> 00:22:14.307 And then it keeps on going and talks about judgment. 00:22:14.307 --> 00:22:18.114 The Lord will raise up for you a prophet like me, from among your brothers. 00:22:18.114 --> 00:22:26.230 You must listen to everything he tells you, and everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from the people. 00:22:26.230 --> 00:22:30.680 What is the ultimate judgment of humanity? 00:23:20.554 --> 00:23:22.891 By fleeing to Christ. 00:23:22.891 --> 00:23:32.355 That's how this one, who has come as a savior, will come again as a judge, and he will not be offering mercy on that day. 00:23:32.355 --> 00:23:34.092 He will be executing judgment. 00:23:34.092 --> 00:23:46.826 And the only way to be free from that judgment is to be in Christ himself, to flee to the one who has the power to hold you eternally responsible for what you've done with him. 00:23:50.392 --> 00:23:58.518 And so, intermingled with all of this, not only a declaration about Jesus, but a call, and you've already heard it from me so I'm not going to repeat. 00:23:58.518 --> 00:24:05.528 It is a call to repentance and to faith, and there are many places through the book of Acts where that happens. 00:24:05.528 --> 00:24:21.773 They don't just declare the facts of Christ, they press Christ on the conscience, they press it home to Jew and Gentile alike that this person is not just simply a religious figure that you might be benefited by paying some attention to. 00:24:21.773 --> 00:24:38.776 This is the Lord of the universe and he has offered salvation to undeserving people, and the only way to be free from your guilt and free from your sin is to acknowledge him in repentance and faith. 00:24:38.776 --> 00:24:43.752 Acts 2, verse 38, repent to be baptized. 00:24:43.752 --> 00:24:50.474 Acts 3, 19, urging the people to find forgiveness and renewal in the restoration of all things. 00:24:50.474 --> 00:24:59.086 Acts, chapter 10, that we looked at in the baptism of the Gentiles who had believed, just like the Jewish people had done. 00:24:59.086 --> 00:25:01.932 In Acts chapter 17, verse 30,. 00:25:01.932 --> 00:25:08.251 In the apostolic preaching, god has commanded all men everywhere to repent. 00:25:08.251 --> 00:25:34.971 So the message of the early church, which ought to be the very central message of the current church, is this very simple and yet very profound message that God has fulfilled his promises through the life, the death, the burial, the resurrection, the ascension, the exaltation and the coming judgment of Jesus Christ himself. 00:25:34.971 --> 00:25:40.709 He's victorious over sin and death and he offers salvation to the undeserving. 00:25:40.709 --> 00:25:44.876 He has come to save the unsaved. 00:25:44.876 --> 00:25:48.430 He's come to declare life where death reigns. 00:25:48.430 --> 00:25:54.268 The question is, all of us need to ask ourselves how am I responding to him? 00:25:54.268 --> 00:25:59.518 So that's the first of four points, the message of the early church. 00:25:59.979 --> 00:26:05.217 Now we're going to look at the growth of the early church, and there is remarkable growth. 00:26:05.217 --> 00:26:24.840 What begins in Acts, chapter 1, with what seems to be a rather timorous group, as someone put it this way, the book of Acts transforms the locked door of the upper room in Jerusalem and brings us to the very portals of Caesar's palace. 00:26:24.840 --> 00:26:27.974 Right, I think that's a great way to look at it. 00:26:27.974 --> 00:26:34.375 So, geographically, there's quite a transformation there, and also a transformation about confidence and boldness. 00:26:34.375 --> 00:26:42.015 So I want to give you a blueprint for that growth, and you can find it in Acts 1.8. 00:26:42.015 --> 00:26:53.698 You'll receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, which we discussed in Acts 2. 00:26:53.698 --> 00:27:06.987 And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria, to the ends of the earth, judea and Samaria to the ends of the earth. 00:27:06.987 --> 00:27:10.674 Now there seems to be just a few stages there, but I want to offer sort of six expansive stages of geographical growth. 00:27:10.674 --> 00:27:12.766 And at stage one is in Jerusalem. 00:27:12.766 --> 00:27:14.430 And you go to book of Acts. 00:27:14.430 --> 00:27:19.008 In chapter two you see them proclaiming the gospel in Jerusalem itself. 00:27:19.008 --> 00:27:35.071 In Acts, chapter six, as they continued to preach in Jerusalem, the scriptures say the word of God continued to spread and the number of disciples in Jerusalem grew larger and larger and a great number of priests accepted the faith. 00:27:35.071 --> 00:27:49.790 And so there's no geographical movement yet, but there is growth of numbers and even reaching into those people that were entrenched in the Jewish religion, the priests. 00:27:52.214 --> 00:27:54.218 Stage two Palestine. 00:27:54.218 --> 00:27:56.019 So let's go to Acts, chapter 9. 00:27:56.019 --> 00:28:03.612 Verse 31. 00:28:03.612 --> 00:28:21.503 It says there so the church throughout all Judea, galilee and Samaria had peace and was strengthened, living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit. 00:28:21.503 --> 00:28:23.786 It increased in numbers. 00:28:23.786 --> 00:28:29.681 So there's expansion, geographical expansion, numerical expansion. 00:28:30.824 --> 00:28:33.609 Just turn over a little bit to Acts, chapter 12 and verse 24. 00:28:33.609 --> 00:28:43.001 And there we find it moving not only from Jerusalem, not only into the regions of Palestine, but also into Antioch and beyond. 00:28:43.001 --> 00:28:52.355 In Acts, chapter 12 and verse 24, the word of God spread and multiplied. 00:28:52.355 --> 00:28:56.299 It spread and multiplied. 00:28:56.299 --> 00:29:03.097 So regionally, geographically and numerically it's growing through the regions of Antioch and beyond. 00:29:03.097 --> 00:29:08.415 So in Acts, chapter 16, we can turn to verse 5. 00:29:08.415 --> 00:29:15.805 It moves beyond these regions into Asia Minor. 00:29:15.805 --> 00:29:17.463 It moves beyond these regions into Asia Minor. 00:29:18.227 --> 00:29:27.298 Acts 16 and verse 5, it says this so the churches were strengthened in faith and grew daily in number. 00:29:27.298 --> 00:29:36.614 And you might be able to see at the very next verse in the heading over that in my Bible says evangelization of Europe. 00:29:36.614 --> 00:29:41.228 Right, and that's the next stage. 00:29:41.228 --> 00:29:50.719 And that's the next stage it moves from Jerusalem into Palestine, up into Antioch, into Asia Minor and then into Europe. 00:29:50.719 --> 00:30:03.211 In Acts, chapter 19 and verse 20, it says this. 00:30:03.211 --> 00:30:07.839 It says in this way the word of the Lord spread and prevailed. 00:30:09.965 --> 00:30:27.019 And then, when you get to Acts, chapter 28, the very last chapter of the book of Acts, in verse 31, it says Paul stayed two whole years in his own rented house and welcomed all who visited him. 00:30:27.019 --> 00:30:28.300 And where is he? 00:30:28.300 --> 00:30:30.332 He's in Rome itself. 00:30:30.332 --> 00:30:37.571 And it said he proclaimed the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus. 00:30:37.571 --> 00:30:42.319 Christ with all boldness and without hindrance. 00:30:42.319 --> 00:30:50.406 Christ with all boldness and without hindrance. 00:30:50.406 --> 00:30:52.590 We started off in Acts, chapter 1, lacking boldness and feeling completely hindered. 00:30:52.590 --> 00:31:05.660 And now we are at the end of the book of Acts with full boldness and no hindrance, and we've seen the development geographically, as it's moved from Jerusalem to Rome. 00:31:06.885 --> 00:31:08.371 There are other things that we could talk about. 00:31:08.371 --> 00:31:09.976 That talk about the kind of growth. 00:31:09.976 --> 00:31:16.296 So there's geographical growth, there's numerical growth, but there's also a growth of confidence in the proclamation. 00:31:16.296 --> 00:31:21.393 This is something for us to understand. 00:31:21.393 --> 00:31:24.791 Now there were barriers there. 00:31:24.791 --> 00:31:29.977 Right, there were all kinds of barriers that they had to get past. 00:31:29.977 --> 00:31:44.317 They passed over cultural barriers, geographical barriers, religious barriers, and yet the gospel grew beyond every one of those hindrances. 00:31:44.317 --> 00:31:54.856 We should have the same sense of confidence that the gospel can cross over geographical, cultural and religious barriers. 00:31:54.856 --> 00:31:58.314 It can overpower every one of those. 00:31:58.314 --> 00:32:03.717 When God is going to move into an area, he is unstoppable. 00:32:08.746 --> 00:32:12.855 The third thing we want to look at is the focus of the church. 00:32:12.855 --> 00:32:23.249 The focus of the church and I think it is easily seen in that very last verse of the book of Acts is easily seen in that very last verse of the book of Acts. 00:32:23.249 --> 00:32:24.750 What is the apostle Paul doing? 00:32:24.750 --> 00:32:28.538 He's proclaiming the kingdom of God in Rome. 00:32:28.538 --> 00:32:35.605 He's teaching about Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance. 00:32:35.605 --> 00:32:37.491 I think there's a lot to be said there. 00:32:41.086 --> 00:33:00.828 Early in the book of Acts there were all sorts of theological constraints, ethical constraints, and when you get near to the end of the book of acts you're starting to realize that there's some political and religious constraints, not just from the jews but also from the gentiles and the roman powers themselves. 00:33:00.828 --> 00:33:29.275 And yet here at the end of it, you see that this freedom has surpassed the political dimension, it's surpassed the religious dimensions, and what it's telling us is that the focus of the church is not to intertwine itself with any of those things, that there was no earthly system, not even the most powerful empire in the world at the time, was going to stop and silence the gospel. 00:33:29.275 --> 00:33:43.941 And so the apostle Paul was careful to distinguish and to keep focused on the message of Jesus Christ and not to turn it into some sort of quasi-political effort. 00:33:43.941 --> 00:34:07.381 As he preached the gospel and others preached the gospel, they were scrutinized by Jewish and Roman courts and constantly they were found innocent of any effort of starting or maintaining a political insurrection. 00:34:07.381 --> 00:34:10.612 Do I need to repeat that? 00:34:10.612 --> 00:34:32.664 Because there is a danger in our generation and in our country of intermingling the Christian faith with a political movement, intermingling the Christian faith with a political movement, and the only ones that are going to lose in that effort are the Christians and the gospel. 00:34:35.905 --> 00:34:47.840 But the Apostle Paul was careful to maintain his integrity and his focus on the gospel so that there was no way they could ever say that he in some way was intertwining with some political insurrection against the ruling powers. 00:34:47.840 --> 00:34:49.592 And they weren't good people. 00:34:49.592 --> 00:34:58.913 They certainly deserved to have their opponents and even their opposition, but Paul wasn't going to be a part of that. 00:34:58.913 --> 00:35:02.228 He had one thing to talk about the kingdom of God. 00:35:02.228 --> 00:35:10.391 He had one thing to talk about the kingdom of God, jesus Christ, and to be able to do it with boldness and without limitation. 00:35:10.391 --> 00:35:41.445 So he stayed on message and while Rome symbolized the highest human authority at that time, through the gospel and the focus on the gospel, paul was able to show an infinitely greater power, one that challenged not just earthly dominions but spiritual dominions and conquered them through the resurrection and life of the gospel. 00:35:41.445 --> 00:35:43.027 What does this tell us? 00:35:43.027 --> 00:35:45.436 That, as believers, our kingdom is not of this world. 00:35:45.436 --> 00:36:01.594 That needs to be our focus, that we need to live our life radically different from the political maneuverings of our day, and we need to stay a hold of that, because we're not here to overthrow earthly powers. 00:36:01.594 --> 00:36:08.019 It's tragic. 00:36:08.641 --> 00:36:17.847 Even today I was reading an article that just sort of enmeshed Christian belief, evangelical Christian belief, with political powers. 00:36:17.847 --> 00:36:19.929 I thought what is going on here? 00:36:19.929 --> 00:36:35.458 In Acts, chapter 26, paul explains that, as he proclaimed the fulfillment of what Moses and the prophets had said, that he was bringing a message that brought light to the Jew and to the Gentile. 00:36:35.458 --> 00:36:41.257 It transcended ethnic, national, political barriers. 00:36:41.257 --> 00:36:46.675 26, chapter 26, verses 22 and 23. 00:36:46.675 --> 00:36:58.905 So we need to be sure that we stay focused. 00:36:58.905 --> 00:37:06.798 We don't allow the political parties to shape the contours of who we are as God's people. 00:37:06.798 --> 00:37:24.278 We're not simply a small part of one political party's influence, nor can we think that God's work and will will be accomplished through them either. 00:37:24.278 --> 00:37:25.990 It goes both directions. 00:37:25.990 --> 00:37:30.809 Let's the last part. 00:37:30.809 --> 00:37:44.766 We'll look at the breadth of the church and all of these, like I said, are a bit intertwined and as you go from Acts 1 to Acts 28, you can see all of them brought together in all these different places. 00:37:44.766 --> 00:37:52.085 But the book of Acts documents for us an unfolding realization that the gospel is for all nations. 00:37:53.889 --> 00:38:02.170 I had a friend of mine write me a note a little over a year ago and he asked me what I thought was a rather perplexing question. 00:38:02.170 --> 00:38:03.956 He said this. 00:38:03.956 --> 00:38:08.815 He said do you think that Jewish people who believe today are part of the church? 00:38:08.815 --> 00:38:11.588 And I know what he was driving at. 00:38:11.588 --> 00:38:12.570 He's kind of a. 00:38:12.570 --> 00:38:25.108 His eschatological view was getting ahead of his biblical understanding, I think, and what he was asking was a question that had to pertain to schemes of eschatology. 00:38:25.108 --> 00:38:31.487 And instead of jumping into that argument, I just wanted to make him think a little bit. 00:38:31.487 --> 00:38:35.219 I said it's a rather interesting question that you ask. 00:38:35.219 --> 00:38:44.199 I think it's a question that would have been completely baffling to the early church, because it was the opposite question that they were asking. 00:38:44.199 --> 00:38:50.121 They weren't asking could a Jewish person who believes be part of the church? 00:38:50.121 --> 00:38:55.657 The question they were asking was could a Gentile be part of the church? 00:38:55.657 --> 00:39:04.807 Because they were convinced that what they were believing in Jesus Christ was exactly what the Old Testament promised they should be believing. 00:39:04.807 --> 00:39:07.574 Hopefully. 00:39:07.574 --> 00:39:18.612 Well, I haven't heard from him since, so maybe Actually I have, but hopefully it provoked a little bit of thought on his part. 00:39:19.552 --> 00:39:21.155 But what are we doing here? 00:39:21.155 --> 00:39:29.813 It's a question that in the book of Acts was asked as Jesus is about to ascend into the heavenlies. 00:39:29.813 --> 00:39:33.806 What's the burning question that his disciples have? 00:39:33.806 --> 00:39:39.934 Are you, at this time, going to restore the kingdom to Israel? 00:39:39.934 --> 00:39:43.179 What does Jesus tell him? 00:39:43.179 --> 00:39:46.766 This is none of your business right now. 00:39:46.766 --> 00:40:05.695 Right now, there is something for you to hold on to, and he doesn't get into the discussion the way they wanted to discuss it, but he answers their question Proclaim the gospel question. 00:40:05.715 --> 00:40:12.802 Proclaim the gospel, bring the message of Christ all over the world, and you might just find the answer to your question. 00:40:12.802 --> 00:40:19.284 And so the breadth of the church is the gospel is for all peoples. 00:40:19.284 --> 00:40:29.032 It's an expansive movement that embraces the Jewish people, embraces the Samaritans, embraces the idol-worshiping Gentiles, and it's a message that continues today. 00:40:29.032 --> 00:40:34.367 This is not an American gospel, this is not a Western European gospel. 00:40:34.367 --> 00:40:48.561 This is a gospel for all peoples, and if God's providence leads there to be a greater influx of belief in Christ in South America than in North America, so be it. 00:40:48.561 --> 00:41:04.219 If he means to expand the church in Asia and we find ourselves, little by little, declining influence in the world in Christian circles, let them have it. 00:41:04.219 --> 00:41:06.266 This is how God operates. 00:41:06.266 --> 00:41:10.177 He is not bound to be a blessing to a particular group. 00:41:10.177 --> 00:41:25.831 He is going to be a blessing to all peoples, just as we looked at right at the very beginning, that blessing comes in the repentance of sins, the reception of forgiveness and the belief on Jesus Christ. 00:41:25.831 --> 00:41:29.706 The early church wrestled with this, as you know. 00:41:29.706 --> 00:41:31.273 They wrestled with this question. 00:41:31.273 --> 00:41:43.697 They thought the gospel was for the Jewish people and they were astounded to find it moving into Gentile circles and it took them a long time to try to understand how to interact with one another. 00:41:43.697 --> 00:41:46.992 Wonderfully and eventually they did. 00:41:46.992 --> 00:42:00.559 And we may find ourselves wrestling with how the gospel interacts in different ways with different cultures that we meet and move into with the gospel. 00:42:01.827 --> 00:42:03.914 I loved what one of my friends did. 00:42:03.914 --> 00:42:21.836 He was part of an evangelistic group and they headed up the prayer breakfast for California, for the governor of California, and one year they're asking themselves who isn't at this prayer breakfast? 00:42:21.836 --> 00:42:27.396 And of course there's a lot of all the political people and everything. 00:42:27.396 --> 00:42:30.755 And they said you know who's not at this prayer breakfast? 00:42:30.755 --> 00:42:32.809 Gang members. 00:42:32.809 --> 00:42:46.688 And they thought how can we, as people who are operating the governor's prayer breakfast, find a way to be able to reach into the gang members of California?
