of scripture, especially what's come before it. 00:05:47.223 --> 00:05:52.591 The first thing to note with Obadiah is that it's not primarily about the people of Israel. 00:05:52.591 --> 00:06:01.033 Verse one says this is what the Lord, god, has said about Edom. 00:06:01.033 --> 00:06:16.036 Yes, there are prophets like Isaiah and Ezekiel who include oracles against other nations, but most, all of the prophets are mainly talking about Israel. 00:06:16.036 --> 00:06:24.906 Sometimes, maybe more the northern kingdom, sometimes more the southern kingdom, you will have Jonah, who was sent specifically to the Ninevites to talk to them. 00:06:24.906 --> 00:06:30.471 But this is one of the very few prophecies where you read through this book as we did. 00:06:30.471 --> 00:06:34.170 It's just one chapter and it's all about Edom. 00:06:34.170 --> 00:06:41.173 So, yes, the house of Jacob, another name for Israel, is mentioned. 00:06:41.173 --> 00:06:50.581 You can see that in verse 17 and in verse 18 as well, but the whole book is more about Edom. 00:06:50.581 --> 00:06:55.910 So who was Edom? 00:06:55.910 --> 00:07:03.564 If Obadiah is unfamiliar as a prophet, edom's not the most familiar place people? 00:07:03.564 --> 00:07:04.024 What is it? 00:07:04.024 --> 00:07:06.271 Well, there's a clue here. 00:07:06.271 --> 00:07:15.300 For us, it's a very huge clue, because there's a name that comes up frequently in the book and that's the name Esau. 00:07:16.281 --> 00:07:21.007 Esau runs parallel to Edom in this prophecy. 00:07:21.007 --> 00:07:32.745 So judgment against Edom is judgment against Esau and judgment against Esau is judgment against Edom. 00:07:32.745 --> 00:07:34.430 I'll give you an example of that. 00:07:34.430 --> 00:07:35.692 Look at verse number eight. 00:07:35.692 --> 00:07:51.242 In that day this is the Lord's declaration Will I not eliminate the wise ones of Edom and those who understand from the hill country of Esau? 00:07:51.242 --> 00:07:56.432 It's not talking about two entirely different things. 00:07:56.432 --> 00:08:00.163 It's another way of saying the same thing. 00:08:00.163 --> 00:08:05.475 Edom is the place of Esau. 00:08:07.862 --> 00:08:11.874 Verse 9, if you look at verse 9, mentions Teman. 00:08:11.874 --> 00:08:31.000 According to Genesis 36.15, teman is the grandson of Esau, esau, esau. 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:32.462 So Edom is the place of Esau and the place of Esau is going to be judged. 00:08:32.462 --> 00:08:33.885 What are they going to be judged for? 00:08:33.885 --> 00:08:37.113 Well, I'm going to highlight just two things here. 00:08:37.113 --> 00:08:39.833 They're going to be judged for pride. 00:08:39.833 --> 00:08:42.495 You see that in verses three and 4. 00:08:42.495 --> 00:08:44.537 They have an arrogant heart. 00:08:44.537 --> 00:08:50.248 They think that they live in the clefts and on the heights they're soaring like an eagle. 00:08:50.248 --> 00:08:56.847 It even describes them as making a nest among the stars, and yet God's going to bring them down. 00:08:57.801 --> 00:09:11.741 Similar to the sermon this morning, doug brought out this language of pride that kind of goes back to the Garden of Eden, but then the Tower of Babel, where the people thought they could exalt themselves to God and God comes down and levels them. 00:09:11.741 --> 00:09:26.573 Similarly, here, these Edomites, these people who have descended from Esau down through the years, there's an arrogance in their heart that thinks they can exalt themselves but God's going to bring them down. 00:09:26.573 --> 00:09:35.509 They're also judged for their opposition to God's people and we find that in verses 10 through 14. 00:09:35.509 --> 00:09:46.611 So it says in verse 10, they'll be covered with shame because of violence done to your brother, jacob. 00:09:46.611 --> 00:09:53.804 Okay, esau, the historic original Esau, had a brother named Jacob. 00:09:54.687 --> 00:10:02.668 Descendants of Esau, edomites, descendants of Jacob, israel, and we'll come to that as we go into this more. 00:10:02.668 --> 00:10:09.094 But here just observe that they're covered with shame because they didn't step in to help in any way. 00:10:17.740 --> 00:10:24.447 Instead, they laughed and scorned the people of God and they took advantage of the people of God in a difficult place. 00:10:24.447 --> 00:10:35.654 So you can keep reading down in some of those verses For example, in verse number 12, it says do not gloat over your brother in the day of his calamity. 00:10:35.835 --> 00:10:41.607 So the Edomites are gloating over the nation of Israel's misfortunes. 00:10:41.607 --> 00:10:43.220 Think about it this way. 00:10:43.220 --> 00:11:01.009 If you think about the nation of Israel like a sheep okay, think about them like a sheep you had these big nations like Assyria or later, like Babylon they're going to come in and just cause havoc among the Israelites. 00:11:01.009 --> 00:11:08.308 So Assyrian Babylon would be like a lion or a bear coming in and just devouring the sheep. 00:11:08.308 --> 00:11:11.078 But then you have the Edomites. 00:11:11.078 --> 00:11:22.287 They weren't as big and bad and grand as the Assyrians or the Babylonians, but it's almost like they're like the hyenas. 00:11:22.287 --> 00:11:25.798 They're just sitting over there laughing and they're waiting. 00:11:25.798 --> 00:11:29.397 As soon as the lying gets done, we'll go in and pick up some of the scraps. 00:11:29.397 --> 00:11:31.604 This'll be great, all right. 00:11:31.604 --> 00:12:14.065 We don't know exactly when Obadiah wrote, but probably a thousand years or so after Esau himself actually lived. 00:12:14.065 --> 00:12:17.600 So why doesn't it just say the Edomites or the descendants of Esau? 00:12:17.600 --> 00:12:18.522 Why Esau? 00:12:18.522 --> 00:12:21.148 You know he's long gone. 00:12:21.148 --> 00:12:39.443 Obadiah wants us to see that there's something happening in his day that's a repeated pattern and fulfillment of something that's been going on for centuries and centuries, and centuries Started a long, long time ago. 00:12:39.443 --> 00:12:45.605 That's why he's using this kind of language, and he wants us to keep in mind these kind of patterns as we read the Bible. 00:12:45.605 --> 00:12:47.804 So hold your finger here on Obadiah. Abraham fathered Isaac. 00:13:19.462 --> 00:13:31.115 Isaac was 40 years old when he took as his wife Rebecca, daughter of Bethuel, the Aramean from Paddam Aram, and the sister of Laban, the Aramean. even though Edom is not as big and burly as Assyria, then later Babylon, they're a continual enemy of the people of God over the years. 00:18:05.709 --> 00:18:09.038 Brother versus brother, people exemplary pattern of what it looks like to be opposed to the people of God, and you find it in Edom. 00:18:39.007 --> 00:18:40.992 They're not the only ones. 00:18:40.992 --> 00:18:51.164 Babylon has a similar idea in scripture, but Edom is this perpetual enemy of the people of God, of the people of God. 00:18:51.164 --> 00:19:12.363 And so when prophets like Obadiah denounce the Edomites, he's
