As we study through this book, we've entered into a new section. 00:00:43.369 --> 00:01:05.462 As you turn the page from chapter 39 to 40, you leap about 100 years forward, away from a nation trembling under the grip of Assyrian advance and now to a nation in defeat, captured by the Babylonians and torn away from their homeland captured by the Babylonians and torn away from their homeland. God is now speaking to a people in defeat, a people who have been captured, a people who have been captured, a people who have been torn from their land. 00:01:48.668 --> 00:01:52.969 And so, before we look deeper into this chapter, let's pray together. 00:01:52.969 --> 00:02:22.168 Father, we ask that you might give us an understanding of your word here, as you spoke to the people in this situation and as you speak to ours, our generation in ours, and we ask, lord, that you might infuse us with the hope and encouragement and the promises and the insight that this section of Scripture provides, and we ask this in Christ's name, amen. 00:02:22.168 --> 00:02:32.230 Have you ever had your world collapse around you, to feel like it's moved and even disappeared beneath your feet? 00:02:32.230 --> 00:02:57.122 To feel like all those things that you once counted on, whether it be your routines or those things that you considered your or perhaps even your purpose to have been swept aside and left disoriented left, confused left, dejected left, depressed left wandering about in a world that doesn't make sense anymore. 00:02:57.122 --> 00:03:03.036 Well, that's exactly how the Judeans would have felt right in this moment. 00:03:03.036 --> 00:03:05.000 How the Judeans would have felt right in this moment. 00:03:07.310 --> 00:03:08.336 They're in exile in Babylon. 00:03:08.336 --> 00:03:21.068 They were known as God's chosen people and now they're a captured people, not captured by the living God, but captured by idol-worshiping nations that speak different languages than they. 00:03:21.068 --> 00:03:34.651 In Babylon, their temple has been destroyed, their nation is gone and their hope, well, it's not only dimmed, it's disappeared. 00:03:34.651 --> 00:03:50.003 There's strangers in this world that's now filled with idols and empires, and they are gathered there, disillusioned and tempted to believe that maybe, just maybe, that Yahweh has failed them. 00:03:50.003 --> 00:03:55.112 And in this moment they're going to be tempted. 00:03:55.112 --> 00:04:04.072 They're going to be tempted to abandon Yahweh in discouragement, or tempted to acquiesce to the gods of power around them. 00:04:04.072 --> 00:04:10.241 And I think we can understand that. 00:04:10.241 --> 00:04:26.130 We're not in Babylon, we're not in captivity, but we're surrounded by a world system that's full of powers, be they political or cultural or technological, or even scientific, that pull at our loyalties to Christ. 00:04:26.130 --> 00:04:43.786 We're constantly under pressure to deconstruct or to round the sharp contours of our Christian faith, to assume that trusting God belongs to some past, simpler time and isn't something that is applicable to this modern day. 00:04:46.069 --> 00:04:47.110 But Isaiah speaks. 00:04:47.110 --> 00:04:56.716 He speaks to people in his time, to those that are just beyond his time, as he does in this passage. 00:04:56.716 --> 00:05:00.521 And he also speaks to our generation. 00:05:00.521 --> 00:05:03.908 And he doesn't just whisper, he shouts. 00:05:03.908 --> 00:05:06.851 And he doesn't just whisper, he shouts. 00:05:06.851 --> 00:05:14.083 And he doesn't just tell people what to do, he tells them who to look at, he tells them who God is. 00:05:14.083 --> 00:05:41.699 And in the midst of all the illusions and disillusions of the people in Babylon, we're going to find in this passage of Scripture that God reveals himself as creator, as one superior over the nations, one who exposes idols for what they really are, who humbles rulers and exalts himself over the heavenlies. 00:05:41.699 --> 00:05:47.291 See, this passage is not just some old passage that we're going to look at, and look at it with some sense of nostalgia and wonder what it might've been like back then. 00:05:47.291 --> 00:05:48.887 It's a living reality. 00:05:50.779 --> 00:05:59.091 Isaiah speaks of rescue and as we go deeper into the section of chapters 40 to 55, we'll see that rescue motif brought out time and time again. 00:05:59.091 --> 00:06:04.764 And he's not inviting us to escape at this moment. 00:06:04.764 --> 00:06:14.951 And he's not inviting us to escape at this moment he's inviting us to live with hope in the middle of Babylon, just as he was calling the people here to do so. 00:06:14.951 --> 00:06:31.091 And he calls us to lift our eyes up and to look Behold your God, because if we don't, our eyes are going to be focused on the things here and tempted to give ourselves to them. 00:06:31.091 --> 00:06:38.891 So let's walk through this text, verses 12 through 26 of Isaiah, chapter 40. 00:06:38.891 --> 00:06:46.153 And in it let us see how we are to lift up our eyes to behold our God. 00:06:47.321 --> 00:06:56.500 The first thing I want to do is just rehearse some of the temptations, and these temptations are going to be coming to us from this whole section of Scripture. 00:06:56.500 --> 00:07:05.293 So I'm not going to turn to a very verse in this moment, but just to give you a bit of a summary of the pressures that are in play here. 00:07:05.293 --> 00:07:10.790 The first thing we want to note is these dangerous temptations, and there's two of them. 00:07:10.790 --> 00:07:25.045 The Judeans, who were in exile, faced a dangerous temptation to move away from the faithfulness of God and, first of all, to abandon Yahweh, and first of all, to abandon Yahweh. 00:07:25.045 --> 00:07:35.641 Here they are, in exile, crushed by defeat, and tempted to shift their allegiance to Babylon's gods. 00:07:35.661 --> 00:07:39.406 There were two, there are many, but there were two key deities in Babylon. 00:07:39.406 --> 00:07:47.735 The first was Marduk, also known as Bel, and you might have heard the name Belshazzar if you've read the book of Daniel. 00:07:47.735 --> 00:07:55.221 So there's that name stuck in, or that name of one of the gods stuck into his name. 00:07:55.221 --> 00:07:59.908 That's the chief God who was associated with order and kingship and creation. 00:07:59.908 --> 00:08:04.692 And then there was Nabu Nebuchadnezzar. 00:08:04.692 --> 00:08:06.134 You hear it? 00:08:06.134 --> 00:08:14.396 He's the God of wisdom and writing and prophecy. 00:08:14.560 --> 00:08:23.314 And from an ancient Near East perspective, judah's defeat was not just a military victory and conquest of Babylon over the people. 00:08:23.314 --> 00:08:31.339 This was a battle of the gods, and the gods of Babylon won. 00:08:31.339 --> 00:08:35.174 That's how they would have looked at it. 00:08:35.174 --> 00:08:57.806 The exiles would have been tempted to think that their loss was not just simply they didn't have enough arms to hold their city they didn't have enough arms to hold their city but rather these two gods of Bel and Nabu were more powerful than Yahweh. 00:08:57.806 --> 00:09:29.631 They would have thought, and had been tempted to think, just as the rest of the ancient Near East world did at that time, that these gods had empowered the Babylonian military to conquer and to absorb their homeland, that Bel and Nabu had defeated Yahweh, that Bel and Nabu had destroyed Jerusalem, that these gods had plundered Yahweh's temple and that these gods had plundered Yahweh's temple and that these gods had captured their king. 00:09:29.631 --> 00:10:06.115 And so they were tempted tempted to believe that Yahweh was weak, that he was defeated and that he was powerless, and that they were right and justified to refuse Isaiah when he had spoken to them, and the other prophets when they had preached to them, because, in their mind, by losing this battle and being brought into exile, everything that those prophets had told them was just a lie, because look what happened. 00:10:06.115 --> 00:10:29.269 But the problem wasn't that Yahweh had failed and he shouldn't be trusted, because the prophets had told them that the people had failed and weren't going to be trusted and that where they were was a consequence of their abandonment of the Lord over the decades and even centuries. 00:10:32.085 --> 00:10:37.692 But there was a second temptation to acquiesce to Babylonian rule. 00:10:37.692 --> 00:11:00.029 There was the risk of just giving themselves over in complete surrender, to eradicate any of the contours of what it meant to be a servant of Yahweh and to assimilate as best they could into Babylonian culture without any allegiance to Yahweh at all. 00:11:00.029 --> 00:11:18.121 So, though they might have private devotions to Yahweh, their public life and service would look exactly like what Babylon wanted, and they could have even quoted a verse to do that Wrongly. 00:11:18.121 --> 00:11:30.445 But Jeremiah told them in Jeremiah 29 and verse 7, pursue the well-being of the city that I've deported you to Pray to the Lord on his behalf, for when it thrives, you will thrive. 00:11:31.388 --> 00:11:44.691 And so some of them, instead of engaging with wisdom, would have considered that a capitulation of full assimilation and just dive straight in and done everything to be as Babylonian as they could be. 00:11:44.691 --> 00:11:52.019 Dive straight in and done everything to be as Babylonian as they could be. 00:11:52.019 --> 00:11:55.341 What's at the heart of this? 00:11:55.341 --> 00:11:56.304 It's a misunderstanding of who God is. 00:11:56.304 --> 00:12:11.240 They had rejected him based on false assumptions, rather than recognizing his continued sovereignty, even in their hard situation. 00:12:11.240 --> 00:12:26.091 Chesterton is reputed to have said it's hard to find the actual proof of this, but he's reputed to have said that the effect of not believing in God is not that you believe in nothing, but rather that you are open to believing anything. 00:12:26.091 --> 00:12:29.687 And that's exactly what's happening here. 00:12:29.687 --> 00:12:44.668 By denying Yahweh, they're opening themselves up to an understanding and a lifestyle that is completely wide open, and that's our temptation as well. 00:12:46.091 --> 00:12:46.793 We live in a world. 00:12:46.793 --> 00:12:48.486 We're not captured by Babylon. 00:12:48.486 --> 00:13:14.553 We're residents in it, however, and there are a lot of parallels in the ideologies and the institutions, and even the political and entertainment figures in our world that are calling out for our allegiances, that are promising to us security and wisdom and prosperity, if only we give up our spiritual allegiance to God. 00:13:14.553 --> 00:13:35.274 Materialism and consumerism run rampant in our society, promising us fulfillment, but always leading to another gnawing heart that's unfulfilled Political and national idolatry that demand our loyalty and even call us to capitulate to them. 00:13:35.274 --> 00:13:48.895 Technological supremacy is telling us, like Nebo, the gods of wisdom, that those things possess all the understanding that we need for life. 00:13:48.895 --> 00:14:02.671 Celebrity and influences, figures in entertainment or on social media, are telling us that we need to be shaping our values and shaping our behaviors according to the contours that they provide by way of their own example. 00:14:02.671 --> 00:14:20.750 And then science exalts itself proudly as the final authority over all things that are true and real, as though they were the sole source of truth. 00:14:20.750 --> 00:14:27.230 Until you get three scientists in a room and find out how much they have to argue with each other. 00:14:27.230 --> 00:14:36.553 Bel and Nebo they embodied the dominance of Babylon. 00:14:36.553 --> 00:14:44.028 They embodied the wisdom and cultural supremacy, and these were great temptations to the Judeans. 00:14:48.059 --> 00:14:49.806 And Isaiah, in this section of scripture, is going to challenge all of that. 00:14:49.806 --> 00:15:01.975 He's going to wash away this false reality by reminding them of who Yahweh is, of who God is and that he reigns supreme. 00:15:01.975 --> 00:15:18.009 And the critique that he gives is not calling the people simply to reject false idols, but to expose how ultimately powerless they are in comparison to the almighty God. 00:15:18.009 --> 00:15:21.688 And this is our answer today. 00:15:21.688 --> 00:15:43.109 It isn't for us simply to be blasting the critiques of society, exposing all of their weaknesses in every way, unless we do so in comparison to the all-encompassing supremacy of God himself, who is the source of life and truth. 00:15:43.109 --> 00:15:46.582 Who is the source of life and truth? 00:15:46.582 --> 00:15:50.865 And so what Isaiah has to say is vital to us. 00:15:50.865 --> 00:16:03.456 And as we go through this section of scripture, there's one thing that we're going to do Once we've understood that these temptations are here, is we get a sense of understanding God. 00:16:03.456 --> 00:16:15.130 And so I want us to look at this passage, and we're going to break it down into five sections very quickly Verses 12 to 14, we're going to see Yahweh as creator. 00:16:15.130 --> 00:16:20.370 Verses 15 to 17, as sovereign over the nations. 00:16:20.370 --> 00:16:30.931 Verses 18 to 20, as Lord over all in comparison to the idols. 00:16:30.931 --> 00:16:46.231 Verses 21 to 24, that he is in command of the rulers of this earth, and verses 25 and 26, even stands above and controls all the stars and planets in the sky. 00:16:46.231 --> 00:16:54.273 What the people need is not something to do or something to argue against, but a God to behold. 00:16:54.273 --> 00:17:01.673 And so let's behold him as Isaiah unpacks these comparative statements. 00:17:01.673 --> 00:17:09.182 First of all, that God is the creator, that he is full of incomparable wisdom and sovereignty. 00:17:11.025 --> 00:17:22.922 Earlier in the book of Isaiah, in chapter six, when the prophet was given his commission to preach, he was given a vision where he went into the very throne room of God and saw him exalted. 00:17:22.922 --> 00:17:25.509 But it wasn't just the Lord that he saw. 00:17:25.509 --> 00:17:36.451 He also saw some angelic beings, seraphim, who were surrounding the throne, who were crying out holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. 00:17:36.451 --> 00:17:40.667 And he heard them speak. 00:17:40.667 --> 00:17:48.587 He heard the Lord speak who will I send, who will go for us? 00:17:48.587 --> 00:17:52.005 And that us word is really interesting. 00:17:52.005 --> 00:18:06.376 It's almost as though God is speaking to a divine counsel and saying we need a messenger on earth, and who's going to be that one? 00:18:06.376 --> 00:18:26.280 And so there might be some temptation in reading that plural, that this divine counsel was like Yahweh's counsel, like all the other gods had, who would gather together and confer with one another in order to make decisions that marked heaven and earth. 00:18:29.208 --> 00:18:32.655 Isaiah wipes that whole perspective completely away here. 00:18:32.655 --> 00:18:37.086 Look at what he says here, verses that we're looking at. 00:18:37.086 --> 00:18:45.048 Look at what he says here, verses that we're looking at. 00:18:45.048 --> 00:18:49.150 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand or marked off the heavens with the span of his hand? 00:18:49.150 --> 00:18:55.596 Who has gathered the dust of the earth in a measure or weighed the mountains on a balance and the hills on the scales? 00:18:55.596 --> 00:19:01.997 Who has directed the spirit of the Lord or who gave him counsel? 00:19:01.997 --> 00:19:04.135 Who did he consult? 00:19:04.135 --> 00:19:07.136 Who gave him understanding and taught him the path of justice? 00:19:07.136 --> 00:19:11.421 Who taught him knowledge and showed him the way of understanding? 00:19:11.970 --> 00:19:16.102 And the answer is no one, nothing. 00:19:16.102 --> 00:19:22.618 There's no divine counsel of wisdom that God needs to hear. 00:19:22.618 --> 00:19:29.972 No, he speaks it all and they join in glad reflection of his glory. 00:19:29.972 --> 00:19:39.041 But they don't advise him, they don't counsel him, they don't teach him, they don't guide him. 00:19:39.041 --> 00:19:56.757 He issues his decrees because he is self-sufficient, self-existent, absolutely sovereign, and his understanding is beyond measure, particularly for us In our Western world. 00:19:56.757 --> 00:20:04.885 Skepticism has limited God to train him as weak or uninvolved or necessarily needing us. 00:20:05.069 --> 00:20:23.820 And yet Isaiah here stands and this passage stands among the greatest statements in all of Scripture of the divine supremacy of God, and here he is placed in comparison with all creation and he is above it and is beyond it. 00:20:23.820 --> 00:20:27.460 But, as we'll see, he's also involved in it. 00:20:27.460 --> 00:20:58.980 When we think about this world and the precision of our atmosphere and the electromagnetic forces and all the things that grant us the ability to have life here, do we think that there was just some sort of chance, random smashing of atoms together that somehow brought life and brought an ecosystem that actually sustains and engenders that life? 00:20:58.980 --> 00:21:07.337 No, there's a living God behind it all who brought it together. 00:21:07.337 --> 00:21:15.682 We think about the depths of the oceans, and here it tells us here that he has all of it in his hands. 00:21:15.682 --> 00:21:21.238 He measures the sea in his hands. 00:21:21.238 --> 00:21:31.019 Isaiah says in another place we haven't even mapped the sea, let alone understood how to hold it all together. 00:21:31.019 --> 00:21:33.615 The scale of the universe. 00:21:33.615 --> 00:21:41.440 Billions and billions of stars lay out there, yet scripture says that God calls them all by name. 00:21:41.440 --> 00:21:53.878 We don't even understand the outer reaches of our galaxy, let alone the universe, but God governs it without effort. 00:21:53.878 --> 00:22:10.240 When we think about the complexity of our person and anyone who studied the body deeply just understands how miraculous it is that's an intelligence beyond our human comprehension. 00:22:10.240 --> 00:22:28.882 All of this matters today because we need to understand who God is, because there are forces out there that are tempting us to doubt God's wisdoms, to simply lower our eyes down to earthly explanations. 00:22:28.882 --> 00:22:46.601 But here we are to meet a God who has no philosophers to inform him, no powers to rival him, no counsels to guide him, because he alone is God and he is worthy of trust and worship and reverence. 00:22:49.790 --> 00:23:01.517 Isaiah moves on from that in verses 15 to 17 to talk about Yahweh in comparison to the nations of the world Verses 15 to 17. 00:23:01.517 --> 00:23:03.837 Look, the nations are like a drop in a bucket. 00:23:03.837 --> 00:23:08.657 They're considered as a speck of dust on the scales he lifts up the islands, like fine dust. 00:23:08.657 --> 00:23:13.258 Lebanon's cedars are not enough for fuel or its animals enough for a burnt offering. 00:23:13.258 --> 00:23:16.298 All the nations are as nothing before him. 00:23:16.298 --> 00:23:19.839 They're considered by him as empty nothingness. 00:23:23.890 --> 00:23:38.442 Little Judea, little tiny place I mean Rhode Island is big compared to Judea right Are surrounded by mighty nations and have been for a long time. 00:23:38.442 --> 00:23:42.019 The Egyptians, a longstanding force. 00:23:42.019 --> 00:23:48.056 They had just come through the scare of Assyria and its mighty empire. 00:23:48.056 --> 00:23:52.157 It was known for its brutality and its widespreading campaigns. 00:23:52.157 --> 00:24:00.582 And now here they are in the grip of Babylon, another empire that's going to span the reaches of continents. 00:24:00.582 --> 00:24:04.717 But their past and their present isn't just the only time. 00:24:04.717 --> 00:24:10.102 The future is going to be with the Medes and the Persians, and then the Greeks, and then the Romans ahead. 00:24:10.102 --> 00:24:29.944 Each of these nations gobbling up vast territories, sweeping nations into their control, engulfing people in their relentless conquests. 00:24:29.944 --> 00:24:34.880 And from a human perspective, all of those nations, in comparison to little Judah, seemed absolutely unstoppable. 00:24:37.652 --> 00:24:40.140 And yet Isaiah offers a different perspective. 00:24:40.140 --> 00:24:43.513 What are they to you, god? 00:24:43.513 --> 00:24:47.462 Nothing, nothing. 00:24:47.462 --> 00:24:52.955 And he uses these comparisons A drop in a bucket. 00:24:52.955 --> 00:24:54.976 You ever wonder where that phrase came from. 00:24:54.976 --> 00:25:02.377 Well, it comes from Isaiah A speck of dust on a scale not even measurable to the gram. 00:25:02.377 --> 00:25:17.736 There's not enough trees in the mighty forest of the cedars of Lebanon to even gather together enough wood or to find enough animals to even provide a sufficient sacrifice to the glory of this God. 00:25:17.736 --> 00:25:24.042 They are, as he sums it up, utterly nothing. 00:25:24.042 --> 00:25:31.788 Not just nothing, but utterly nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing. 00:25:34.691 --> 00:25:56.240 Today we live in a world where nations are again exerting their powers, and they're doing so with increasing degree of nationalistic fervor and conflict, and they're going to continue to rise. 00:25:56.240 --> 00:26:14.278 To continue to rise, and there will be someone with enough intellect and enough wickedness of heart to capture the sweeping mindset that will lead nations against nations, perhaps even in our own area. 00:26:14.278 --> 00:26:24.278 But there's a living, eternal God that calls us to trust him, even in the midst of all of that. 00:26:24.278 --> 00:26:33.698 You see, empires, in order to exist, depend on human strength, but God is the source of all strength. 00:26:33.698 --> 00:26:44.300 Empires expand by way of conquest, and yet God has expanded his kingdom by a simple message of love and life in a savior. 00:26:44.300 --> 00:26:48.798 Human rulers desire control. 00:26:48.798 --> 00:26:58.761 Jesus said that he's come to give life, and life more abundantly, and to set people free in the liberation from sin and death and judgment. 00:26:58.761 --> 00:27:23.203 And so Isaiah is calling people, in these introductory moments, before he gets into the deep heart of this section, to look away from themselves and look away from Babylon and look to God and to recognize that every ruler, every empire, every force is nothing but nothing in comparison to him. 00:27:26.632 --> 00:27:28.960 He moves on to the idols in verses 18 to 20. 00:27:28.960 --> 00:28:06.532 And in the ancient world, victorious kings would identify themselves with idols, because an idol once crafted signified the presence of that God, and so when the Kings commissioned the making of idols, they were showing that they were equated with that God and had the power of that God and the presence of that God, and that they were elevated themselves as human rulers into a place of divine supremacy. 00:28:06.532 --> 00:28:24.365 This is why Nebuchadnezzar was so proud of himself in the book of Daniel, because he felt that everything that he had been given was a sign and seal of the God's endorsement of who he was. 00:28:24.365 --> 00:28:37.422 And so they would publicly celebrate their victories by taking the spoils of war and by building the monuments and idols around the public square. 00:28:37.422 --> 00:28:42.020 And if you were to walk around Babylon you would see those everywhere. 00:28:46.031 --> 00:28:53.558 The taking of objects of worship were considered an act of supremacy by the gods over one another. 00:28:53.558 --> 00:29:09.416 And so, for example, when you go to 1 Samuel, chapter 5, and the Philistines there go to battle with the people of Israel, and the people of Israel foolishly bring the Ark of the Covenant into the battle, thinking that somehow that's going to help them win the war because the presence of God is with them. 00:29:09.416 --> 00:29:16.355 They'd already bought into the whole idolatrous understanding and the Philistines win. 00:29:16.355 --> 00:29:18.473 And what the Philistines do? 00:29:18.473 --> 00:29:22.939 They capture the Ark of the Covenant, thinking our God has beat your God. 00:29:22.939 --> 00:29:27.740 And what do they do to show humiliation to the God of the people of Israel? 00:29:27.740 --> 00:29:31.079 They stick the Ark of the Covenant in the Temple of Dagon. 00:29:31.079 --> 00:29:38.583 Our God rules, but what happened? 00:29:38.583 --> 00:29:41.436 But what happened? 00:29:41.457 --> 00:29:51.974 They woke up the next day and they found That's how they looked at it, and so they invested the heavenlies with God-like qualities and and they did so in very intricate and profound ways that we're still trying to discover they put together a numeral system that recorded the details of the celestial movements and were able to predict eclipses and planetary movements and seasonal cycles in a way we're just now doing. 00:36:54.264 --> understood and he controls it all and he commands the stars, and that's why, in the New Testament, we find this star moving people, called the Magi to a place not to draw attention to the glory of
