going to cover Exodus, not in every little detail, but in broad strokes, and this is the one big theme I want you to take away tonight. 00:00:49.551 --> 00:00:52.909 God redeems his people for the the early verses and the last verses will give you some insight or window into the structure or emphases of the book. 00:01:23.155 --> 00:01:25.072 Not always, but sometimes they will. 00:01:25.072 --> 00:01:28.625 So I'm going to read Exodus, chapter 1, verses 1 to 6. 00:01:28.625 --> 00:01:34.921 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob. 00:01:34.921 --> 00:01:43.484 Each came with his family Reuben, simeon, levi and Judah, issachar, zebulun and Benjamin, dan and Naphtali, gad and Asher. 00:01:43.484 --> 00:01:47.033 The total number of Jacob's descendants was 70. 00:01:47.033 --> 00:01:49.626 Joseph was already in Egypt. 00:01:49.626 --> 00:01:56.712 Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation eventually died. 00:01:56.712 --> 00:02:19.199 Now turn over to chapter 40 of Exodus, so the very last chapter of Exodus, of Exodus, the very last chapter of Exodus, and we'll read verses 34 down through verse 38. 00:02:19.199 --> 00:02:23.503 The cloud covered the tent of meeting and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 00:02:23.503 --> 00:02:32.022 Moses was unable to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud rested on it and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 00:02:32.022 --> 00:02:36.953 The Israelites set out whenever the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle throughout all the stages of their Genesis here. 00:03:52.649 --> 00:03:54.465 If you see what's going on there. 00:03:54.525 --> 00:04:03.733 In verse number seven of Exodus one, the Israelites were fruitful, increased rapidly and multiplied. 00:04:03.733 --> 00:04:09.444 Can you think about where in the Bible we've heard of being fruitful and multiplying? 00:04:09.444 --> 00:04:10.826 That was back in Genesis. 00:04:10.826 --> 00:04:16.908 So what God had wanted in the garden, we see it happening in some measure here. 00:04:16.908 --> 00:04:19.516 It's like, wow, this is amazing. 00:04:19.516 --> 00:04:22.966 What God wanted, the people are multiplying, they're fruitful. 00:04:22.966 --> 00:04:25.492 But is it just like the Garden of Eden. 00:04:25.492 --> 00:04:36.882 No, it's not just like the Garden of Eden, because you can see there in verse number six, all that generation eventually died. 00:04:36.882 --> 00:04:41.627 So there's a fruitfulness, but there's still death. 00:04:41.627 --> 00:04:43.050 That's pervasive there. 00:04:45.232 --> 00:04:55.468 In fact, what we're going to see in Exodus, what we do find in Exodus, is that the people of God are in slavery, so they're subjected to harsh bondage. 00:04:55.468 --> 00:05:02.173 There's a kind of pallor of death that hangs over the first part of the book of Exodus. 00:05:02.173 --> 00:05:12.351 These people need deliverance, they need redemption, they need to be brought out from the slavery that they're in. 00:05:12.351 --> 00:05:15.100 That's where the title of the book comes from. 00:05:15.100 --> 00:05:30.463 The title Exodus is actually a Greek term that the Greek translators gave to this book gave to this book, and it describes people leaving a place. 00:05:30.463 --> 00:05:30.964 We have exit signs. 00:05:30.964 --> 00:05:35.882 There could be exodus signs in a certain kind of a sense, but the people are not just leaving because they want to go somewhere else. 00:05:35.882 --> 00:05:38.728 They need to be rescued and delivered. 00:05:38.728 --> 00:05:43.105 So there's this idea of deliverance in this theme of redemption that we see here. 00:05:43.105 --> 00:05:50.732 So we do see in the beginning, with the death that's there, and as you go on in chapter one, you see more of the nature of this slavery. 00:05:50.732 --> 00:05:53.524 There's a need, a real need, for redemption. 00:05:53.524 --> 00:05:58.461 We see that plan worked out in the first 18 chapters of the book. 00:05:58.461 --> 00:06:01.427 So that's the first half of the book. 00:06:01.468 --> 00:06:03.192 If you can kind of divide the book in two halves. 00:06:03.192 --> 00:06:12.021 The first half of the book, if you can kind of divide the book in two halves, part one of Exodus is God redeeming his people. 00:06:12.021 --> 00:06:12.543 Why does he do it? 00:06:12.543 --> 00:06:19.319 Well, that's where the second half of the book comes in, in chapter 19, the people come to Mount Sinai and they receive God's law. 00:06:19.319 --> 00:06:28.134 And then chapters 20 to 40 are all about worship or about things that flow from worship. 00:06:28.134 --> 00:06:48.865 And so what we got to there at the very end of the book, when the tabernacle, this tent of worship, has been set up, god's glory cloud comes down and the people are ready to worship and the people are ready to worship. 00:06:48.865 --> 00:06:52.035 So yes, the book begins with the need for redemption, god redeems his people, and the book ends with worship. 00:06:52.035 --> 00:06:52.757 There's kind of a quick flyover. 00:06:52.757 --> 00:06:56.071 Let's go in and double click on both halves of the book a little bit more here. 00:06:56.733 --> 00:07:01.867 So if you look down in verse 11, chapter one of Exodus, still we talk about God redeeming his people. 00:07:01.867 --> 00:07:05.374 He redeems his people from slavery. 00:07:05.374 --> 00:07:08.069 I mentioned that, but let's just make sure we have our eyes on it. 00:07:08.069 --> 00:07:18.413 So, verse number 11, chapter 1, the Egyptians assigned taskmasters over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor. 00:07:18.413 --> 00:07:25.512 We see also in verse 16 that God redeems his people from the threat of extinction. 00:07:26.740 --> 00:07:31.872 Verse 16, when you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them as they deliver. 00:07:31.872 --> 00:07:36.110 If the child is a son, kill him. 00:07:36.110 --> 00:07:38.947 It's a striking instruction. 00:07:38.947 --> 00:07:45.492 So, yeah, they're enslaved, but they're also trying to be extinguished in some sense. 00:07:45.492 --> 00:07:50.591 And the person that gives that instruction is the king, is Pharaoh. 00:07:50.591 --> 00:08:00.711 So if you go back to verse 15, the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives so there's, the bad guy in the book of Exodus is Pharaoh. 00:08:00.711 --> 00:08:09.173 Only he's presented as a kind of satanic overlord ruling as a despot. 00:08:09.173 --> 00:08:22.771 And in Exodus the ultimate conflict is not just between Moses the man and Pharaoh the man, but between the God of the Israelites and the false gods of the Egyptians. 00:08:22.771 --> 00:08:31.031 And Pharaoh here, who is here, and God also redeems his people in remembering his promise. 00:08:31.360 --> 00:08:35.611 Turn over to chapter 2, and you'll see that in chapter 2. 00:08:35.611 --> 00:08:38.366 Look at verse 23. 00:08:38.366 --> 00:08:45.970 After a long time, the king of Egypt died. 00:08:45.970 --> 00:08:49.639 The Israelites groaned because of their difficult labor. 00:08:49.639 --> 00:08:54.231 They cried out in their cry for help because of the difficult labor sent to God. 00:08:54.231 --> 00:09:02.491 God heard their groaning and God now you might expect it to say God took pity on them and saw them in their suffering. 00:09:02.491 --> 00:09:08.980 True, he is a God of mercy and compassion, but it says something different here in verse 24. 00:09:08.980 --> 00:09:17.648 He heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 00:09:17.648 --> 00:09:32.620 So it's God's own memory of his promise to Abraham, the father of the Israelite nation, and the way he reiterated that promise to Isaac and to Jacob that because of that promise God's going to redeem his people. 00:09:32.620 --> 00:09:36.990 Now those 15. 00:10:12.030 --> 00:10:26.750 Now, since the children have flesh and blood in common, jesus also shared in these so that through his death he might destroy the one holding the power of death that is the devil, and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by fear of death. 00:10:26.750 --> 00:10:30.931 Redemption on the basis of God's promise Titus 1, 2. 00:10:30.931 --> 00:10:36.629 In the hope of eternal life, that God who cannot lie. 00:10:39.634 --> 00:10:40.096 Exodus. 00:10:40.096 --> 00:10:50.899 Like so many parts of the Bible in the Old Testament, there are these patterns and recurring themes that get picked up and developed and repeated throughout the Bible. 00:10:50.899 --> 00:11:05.880 We'll see more of those tonight, but there's just a sample of these themes of redemption find great echo and expansion and a deeper way for those of us who know and enjoy God that we can be redeemed from our own sin. 00:11:05.880 --> 00:11:14.335 Also very important in this first half of Exodus is that God redeems his people through a mediator. 00:11:14.335 --> 00:11:26.594 He uses Moses to be a mediator and there are also pattern-like ways in which Moses anticipates the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:11:26.594 --> 00:11:35.813 Both Moses and Jesus are portrayed as shepherds and prophets and rulers. 00:11:38.681 --> 00:11:50.008 In Exodus, chapter 3, moses has that encounter at the burning bush and many commentators think that who Moses is encountering is the Son of God. 00:11:50.008 --> 00:12:00.304 It's described as a messenger of God or angel of God, but it talks about hearing the voice of God and seeing the angels, the kind of identity there. 00:12:00.304 --> 00:12:04.144 Moses leads the people. 00:12:04.144 --> 00:12:14.611 As the God-appointed mediator for this particular time and season, for this particular earthly redemption, moses leads the people in a ritual of blood redemption. 00:12:14.611 --> 00:12:20.490 So when they come out of Egypt, how do they come out? 00:12:20.490 --> 00:12:30.754 They come out right on the heels of the Passover, where there's this instruction from God put blood over the door. 00:12:30.754 --> 00:12:45.370 I'm going to bring judgment wherever the blood is not, but wherever the blood is, I'm going to pass over and the people pass over the waters and through the waters, while the Israelite army is swallowed up in the judgment of God. 00:12:45.370 --> 00:12:49.811 So those that have the lamb are rescued. 00:12:51.380 --> 00:12:53.729 Mediator brings a blood ritual of redemption. 00:12:53.729 --> 00:13:02.330 The Lord, jesus Christ, as the New Testament so wonderfully brings out, christ, our Passover lamb, is sacrificed. 00:13:02.330 --> 00:13:09.269 We're redeemed with imperishable things, not with the blood of bulls and goats, but with the precious blood of Christ. 00:13:09.269 --> 00:13:17.187 Unlike Moses though this is very important Moses instructed them about slaughtering the lambs. 00:13:17.187 --> 00:13:20.033 Jesus Christ himself is the lamb. 00:13:20.033 --> 00:13:28.710 That's where, again, these patterns are magnified in Christ and they're amplified in Christ that he himself is not only the mediator but he's the sacrifice. 00:13:28.710 --> 00:13:34.831 Moses communes with God and seeks to bring people into communion with God. 00:13:34.831 --> 00:13:37.427 Moses intercedes for the people. 00:13:37.427 --> 00:13:38.905 Now, this is actually in the second half of the book. 00:13:38.905 --> 00:13:41.548 But Moses intercedes for the people. 00:13:41.548 --> 00:13:45.769 Our Lord ever lives Mount Sinai and they're clapping. 00:14:25.022 --> 00:14:35.869 And then they got instructions about the tabernacle and there's a lot of turbans and priestly garments and curtain rings and I started you must say to the house of Jacob and explain to the Israelites. 00:15:26.272 --> 00:15:31.511 You've seen what I did to the Egyptians, how I carried you on eagle's wings and brought you to myself. 00:15:31.511 --> 00:15:33.626 Now there's the redemption part. 00:15:33.626 --> 00:15:48.989 Right Now, if you will carefully listen to me and keep my covenant, you'll be my own possession out of all the peoples, although the whole earth is mine, and you will be my kingdom of priests and my holy nation. 00:15:51.363 --> 00:15:56.208 At the heart of this old covenant, or Mosaic covenant, is the priority of worship. 00:15:56.208 --> 00:16:02.288 Sometimes we think of worship merely as performing certain rituals. 00:16:02.288 --> 00:16:12.250 It includes rituals, but it's meant to bring us into friendship with God, into enjoying God, to communion with him. 00:16:12.250 --> 00:16:24.870 God wanted to dwell among his people, just like in the Garden of Eden, and think about this for a moment Something so grand and magnificent as God redeeming his people out of Egypt. 00:16:24.870 --> 00:16:26.543 What does he then have them do? 00:16:26.543 --> 00:16:33.027 He doesn't have them immediately go out into all the nations and tell them about my redemptive work, and that's it. 00:16:33.027 --> 00:16:35.572 I'm not saying it's not important, it's critically important for us. 00:16:35.572 --> 00:16:43.672 But the very first thing he does after this grand redemption he brings them out into the wilderness and instructs them about worship. 00:16:43.672 --> 00:16:46.844 That's stunningly important. 00:16:46.844 --> 00:16:51.956 In God's mind, worship is what we're going to be doing forever. 00:16:52.878 --> 00:16:54.542 It's important throughout the pages of the Bible. don'ts, ten Commandments, but even how the Ten Commandments begin no other gods before me Do you see how it's still grounded in no idolatry? 00:17:13.973 --> 00:17:15.703 God wants us to belong to him. 00:17:15.703 --> 00:17:18.569 He wants his people to revere him of everyone else. 00:17:18.569 --> 00:17:26.780 So all the other do's and don'ts flow out of that God-centered perspective of keeping God in the center of place. 00:17:26.780 --> 00:17:34.204 It's similar in the New Testament, romans, chapter 12, present your body as a living sacrifice in view of God's mercy. 00:17:34.204 There's another repeated idea here in this second part of the book of exodus and these instructions about the tabernacle. 00:17:58.945 --> 00:18:02.651 25, verse number nine. 00:18:02.651 --> blueprint. 00:18:25.682 --> 00:18:33.375 Yes, interestingly, the book of Hebrews speaks of the earthly tabernacle as a copy and shadow of heavenly things. 00:18:33.375 --> 00:18:37.750 God was giving ways like a little slice of heaven, a transportable Mount Sinai that people could pick up and take with them on all their journeys so that the Lord could be with them, so that the Lord could be with Testament as well, we have this huge emphasis on the church coming together as the redeemed people of God to worship our king, coming together as the redeemed people of God to worship our King. 00:20:13.344 --> 00:20:18.009 Don't think of coming on Sunday morning as simply, I got to have my routine for the week. 00:20:18.009 --> 00:20:20.773 We need the kids to have kind of a moral
