and his love for mankind appeared, he saved us, not by works of righteousness that we had done, but, according to his mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit. 00:02:00.745 We ask in Jesus' name, amen, amen, amen, amen. 00:02:03.287 --> 00:02:25.418 The book of Titus is a letter that Paul wrote to Titus and their traveling companions, and, according to chapter one, verse five of Titus, paul has left Titus behind on the island of Crete, there in the Mediterranean ocean, and he's got a specific role in mind for Titus. 00:02:25.418 --> 00:02:28.746 Titus wasn't in trouble, he wasn't getting relegated. 00:02:28.746 --> 00:02:29.949 He did something wrong. 00:02:29.949 --> 00:02:43.533 But apparently there were Christians on Crete that had heard the good news, been evangelized, were converted, were starting to meet together, and yet these churches weren't as wellered as they could be. 00:02:43.533 --> 00:02:55.564 And so Paul leaves Titus behind on Crete to help these churches become more well-ordered churches, and he writes this letter as an encouragement to Titus. 00:02:55.564 --> 00:03:06.450 And one of the key ideas that Paul's going to reiterate in this letter is that Titus, be sure to tell Christians to maintain good works. 00:03:06.450 --> 00:03:08.520 Let me show you that emphasis. 00:03:08.640 --> 00:03:10.304 Chapter 2, verse 7. 00:03:10.304 --> 00:03:20.481 In everything, make yourself an example of good works, with integrity and dignity in your teaching. 00:03:20.481 --> 00:03:23.968 Then look down chapter 2, verse 14. 00:03:23.968 --> 00:03:33.228 He, that is, Christ, gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse us for himself. 00:03:33.228 --> 00:03:37.783 A people, for his own possession, eager to do good works. 00:03:38.685 --> 00:03:39.947 Chapter 3, verse 1,. 00:03:39.947 --> 00:03:46.617 Remind them to submit to rulers and authorities to obey, to be ready for every good in the way that Paul speaks of the false teachers. 00:04:10.811 --> 00:04:16.872 If you go back to chapter 1, verse 16, there were some that were disturbing some of these churches with wrong teaching. 00:04:16.872 --> 00:04:19.829 And look what Paul says about them in chapter 1, verse 16. 00:04:19.829 --> 00:04:25.810 They claim to know God, but they deny him by their works. 00:04:25.810 --> 00:04:33.908 They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for any good work. 00:04:33.908 --> 00:04:41.103 So there's a key idea in this letter Christians must maintain good works. 00:04:41.103 --> 00:04:48.134 But Paul doesn't just leave that theme kind of dangling in the air on its own. 00:04:48.134 --> 00:04:56.555 He builds a foundation for those good works in the sound doctrine Timothy's called to give to these people. 00:04:56.555 --> 00:05:05.154 And that sound doctrine, that good teaching, is that foundation from which those good works can grow and flourish. 00:05:08.081 --> 00:05:16.021 If you want to get a main idea for the book of Titus, I'm going to suggest this as one main idea. 00:05:16.021 --> 00:05:17.946 We're going to focus on this for tonight. 00:05:17.946 --> 00:05:36.076 I'll start with the good doctrine, then we'll move on to the good works. 00:05:36.076 --> 00:05:43.331 So first doctrine, and I mean by that teaching truths, important truths about who God is, who we are, who Christ is. 00:05:43.331 --> 00:05:48.586 So if you're thinking you have to have an encyclopedia, that's not necessarily what I mean by that. 00:05:48.586 --> 00:05:57.853 But if you think teaching good, biblical, faithful teaching of key core truths, look at how the book begins, in chapter 1, verse 1. 00:06:00.199 --> 00:06:12.067 Paul, a servant of God, an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness. 00:06:12.067 --> 00:06:15.091 What leads to godliness? 00:06:15.091 --> 00:06:21.002 Knowledge of the truth, what builds up your faith? 00:06:21.002 --> 00:06:26.132 When you grasp that you were chosen by God for salvation through Jesus Christ. 00:06:26.132 --> 00:06:27.040 That's good doctrine. 00:06:27.682 --> 00:06:29.927 Turn over to chapter two to see some more of this. 00:06:29.927 --> 00:06:40.930 Verse number 12 of chapter two says that we should live in a godly way in the present number 11. 00:06:50.899 --> 00:06:57.442 The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people. 00:06:57.442 --> 00:06:58.805 It's that saving grace that instructs us and that changes us. 00:06:58.805 --> 00:07:00.208 Look down to verse 14. 00:07:01.170 --> 00:07:09.466 He gave himself for us, to redeem us from all lawlessness, to cleanse for himself the people, for his own possession, he says again that people should devote themselves to good works. 00:07:55.211 --> 00:08:01.187 But he's just talked about a trustworthy saying and you've got to go back and look at what he's already 00:08:57.806 It's the declaration of God that we've been justified, declared righteous in his sight, not because of our works but because of the work of Jesus Christ, credited to our account, and even that. 00:09:01.474 --> 00:09:09.481 Do you want to grow in godliness, you have to know who the Redeemer is and what he's accomplished. 00:09:09.481 --> 00:09:19.047 You have to bask in the light of Sometimes you'll hear people say you know, doctrine really isn't that important, it's what counts as a life well-lived. 00:09:30.073 --> 00:09:33.586 That's wrong, that's unbiblical. 00:09:33.586 --> up to good works. 00:09:54.542 --> 00:10:04.910 Okay, but I hear someone say and this is a common objection, certainly from unbelievers, sometimes also from Christians People will say, okay, I hear what you're saying, I see that in Titus. 00:10:04.910 --> 00:10:19.677 But I know some people and they're so excited about doctrine but it doesn't seem like their lives really are showcasing that much not helpful, and Titus talks about that. 00:11:01.164 --> 00:11:05.649 Look at chapter 3, verse 9. 00:11:07.993 --> 00:11:19.833 But avoid foolish debates, genealogies, quarrels and disputes about the law, because they are unprofitable and worthless. 00:11:19.833 --> 00:11:28.806 Reject a divisive person after a first and second warning, for you know that such a person is has gone astray and is sitting. 00:11:28.806 --> 00:11:30.270 He's self-condemned. 00:11:30.270 --> 00:11:39.741 There are people that they have a certain kind of zeal and they'd like to talk about doctrine on some level. 00:11:39.741 --> 00:11:42.488 But they just like to argue. 00:11:42.488 --> 00:11:47.443 They like to show off their so-called knowledge, their ornery. 00:11:47.443 --> 00:11:49.168 They don't have the aroma of Christ. 00:11:49.168 --> 00:11:56.688 They major on minors, say well, okay, well, how do we know what's major and what's minor? 00:11:56.688 --> 00:11:58.552 That's not an easy question. 00:11:58.552 --> 00:11:59.841 It's a difficult question. 00:12:00.643 --> 00:12:18.768 But here's one thing that might help us in that the more a doctrine showcases who the Lord Jesus Christ is in his glory and how people are saved, the more important it is for us to emphasize. 00:12:18.768 --> 00:12:26.370 So I'm not saying any doctrine is unimportant it can actually be found in scripture but the more it pertains to Christ and his glory and the salvation of sinners. 00:12:26.370 --> 00:12:29.235 Those things are especially important to emphasize. 00:12:29.235 --> 00:12:39.380 You might say, okay, I hear you, but there are some people who they're not emphasizing you know the wrong things, they're not majoring on minors, but there still seems to be a disconnect in their life. 00:12:39.380 00:13:01.001 Those words come up throughout the letter of Titus. 00:13:01.001 --> 00:13:05.011 So it's okay to challenge a person, but we don't want to challenge scripture. 00:13:05.011 --> 00:13:09.822 You understand where I'm going with this. 00:13:09.841 --> 00:13:17.081 Or just help us to think and speak clearly about the Bible's relationship between good doctrine, this foundation, and good works, which we're going to come to in a moment. 00:13:17.081 --> 00:13:31.225 So you know, it's okay, after the men's study, to say you know, tom, you so well articulated regeneration, and talking about every single thing, although all scripture is profitable, but especially those things that pertain to Christ and his glory and our salvation. 00:14:30.966 --> 00:14:35.102 So that's arenas good works in church leadership, good works in relationships and good works in our public lives. 00:14:45.581 --> 00:14:59.923 One overarching comment I think for some of us our idea of a good work is an occasional, isolated act of kindness to a stranger. 00:14:59.923 --> 00:15:09.278 I saw my neighbor struggling to shovel his snow and I helped him last January 14th. 00:15:09.278 --> 00:15:11.369 Good works are important. 00:15:11.369 --> 00:15:16.990 Yep, I gave a thousand dollars to Compassion International so they could help with children that are struggling. 00:15:16.990 --> 00:15:17.831 Those are good works. 00:15:17.831 --> 00:15:20.505 So I'm not saying don't do those things. 00:15:20.505 --> 00:15:28.130 What I am saying is I think when you read through Titus and if you haven't done that, I encourage you to do it you could read it in less than an hour, no problem. 00:15:29.313 --> 00:15:38.038 In the book of Titus good works run broader and deeper than only isolated, occasional acts. 00:15:38.038 --> 00:15:43.091 When I think about good works I'm thinking about the way we live our lives. 00:15:43.091 --> 00:15:45.937 That includes our character towards so again, paul's purpose in leaving Titus in Crete was to help some of these churches be more well-ordered. 00:16:15.682 --> 00:16:21.019 So he encourages Titus to help with overseeing having elders established in every place. 00:16:21.019 --> 00:16:26.714 That's the first good work for Titus is help get elders established in every place. 00:16:26.714 --> 00:16:30.106 Look at chapter 1, verse 5. 00:16:30.106 --> 00:16:43.393 The reason I left you in Crete was to set right what was left undone, undone and, as I directed you, to appoint elders in every town. 00:16:43.393 --> 00:16:47.979 And he's talking about spiritual leaders here. 00:16:47.979 --> 00:16:51.933 We tend to think that every town has 50 churches. 00:16:51.933 --> 00:16:54.081 That wasn't the way it worked in Bible times. 00:16:54.081 --> 00:16:57.599 So he's talking about not so much political leaders but spiritual leaders. 00:16:57.599 --> 00:17:02.649 You can see that from the way they're described, how they compare with the elders in 1 Timothy, chapter 3. 00:17:02.649 --> 00:17:17.377 But you can have a church without any elders, without any pastors those words are interchangeable in the Bible but you can't have not being easily angered, not a bully or a money grubber or drunk, say well, that sounds like. 00:18:02.968 --> 00:18:04.835 Shouldn't this be kind of true of all Christians? 00:18:04.835 --> works in a saintly halo kind of way that no one else can remotely imitate. 00:18:20.758 --> 00:18:29.930 Rather, there's the connection here of the elders that are teaching and promoting the faithful message, the sound doctrine, encouraging people to good works. 00:18:29.930 --> 00:18:43.497 They're living lives, not perfectly, but consistently, modeling what that connection of doctrine and life
