statements. 00:01:11.359 --> 00:01:18.400 Number one, God has clearly stated our purpose here on earth when he gave the creation mandate. 00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:25.359 Number two, idolatry is a reversal of that purpose that is explained in the creation mandate. 00:01:25.359 --> 00:01:34.400 My hope for this session is that we would be equipped to tear down every stronghold or idol that sets itself up against our created purpose. 00:01:34.400 --> 00:01:44.879 This lesson today comes out of my own heart and my own journey in understanding my purpose and recognizing the idols of my heart that hindered me from living it out. 00:01:44.879 --> 00:01:55.200 As a pastor's wife and a biblical counselor, the need to deal with idols of the heart is ever before me and not just others' idols, but my own. 00:01:55.200 --> 00:02:02.000 So we're gonna do some review because if you're anything like me, and we talked about this before, you are a slow learner. 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:04.079 I need to hear things over and over. 00:02:04.079 --> 00:02:10.080 Repetition is good, and many of you have said you've never heard about this topic before, and it's a lot. 00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:13.360 We covered a lot, so I think repetition will be good for us. 00:02:13.360 --> 00:02:23.199 So if I were to ask you what the creation mandate is, I hope you're starting to go right to the imperative, the command. 00:02:23.199 --> 00:02:31.120 And the mandate is to be fruitful, to multiply, to fill the earth, subdue it, and take dominion over it. 00:02:31.120 --> 00:02:42.800 If I were to ask you what is the indicative or the truth or the motivator behind the command, I hope your mind would be going to, because we have been created in the image and likeness of God. 00:02:42.800 --> 00:02:45.439 That is why we are to fulfill this mandate. 00:02:45.439 --> 00:02:51.120 Genesis 1.26 tells us that God made man in his image to represent him. 00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:55.280 This verse encapsulates our purpose to image God. 00:02:55.280 --> 00:03:01.680 Scripture shows us in several places what our purpose is, but it's rooted in this truth that we are made in his image. 00:03:01.680 --> 00:03:07.439 We are image bearers, and bearing God's image rightly is the only way to truly glorify him. 00:03:07.439 --> 00:03:15.039 2 Corinthians 5 9 tells us, so whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 00:03:15.039 --> 00:03:23.759 1 Corinthians 10 31 says, So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:29.039 We glorify God by imaging him, by being like him. 00:03:29.039 --> 00:03:32.800 This is the very purpose for which we were designed. 00:03:32.800 --> 00:03:35.199 So we're going to go over the mandate again. 00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:36.800 Genesis 1 26. 00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:50.560 Then God said, Let us make man in our image after our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. 00:03:50.560 --> 00:03:54.960 We talked about what it means to be made in the image and likeness of God. 00:03:54.960 --> 00:04:00.960 There is a reason that God is sharing his communicable attributes with man. 00:04:00.960 --> 00:04:02.560 There is a purpose. 00:04:02.560 --> 00:04:07.360 Our entire existence is banking on us, understanding this truth. 00:04:07.360 --> 00:04:14.240 We learned that in the ancient Near East, a king would arise and he would want to conquer and control the known world at that time. 00:04:14.240 --> 00:04:17.920 As the king conquered lands, he would leave behind the nine-foot statue. 00:04:17.920 --> 00:04:20.800 We talked about that in every land he conquered. 00:04:20.800 --> 00:04:27.360 So remember, when Moses wrote these terms, image and likeness, the readers understood that implication and what it meant. 00:04:27.360 --> 00:04:31.199 They would be thinking that image and likeness represented the great king. 00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:36.399 So when people looked at those statues, they were to represent the reign and rule of the great king. 00:04:36.399 --> 00:04:40.399 Those statues would show them ultimately who owns that land. 00:04:40.399 --> 00:04:44.800 The people were to represent the value system of the great king. 00:04:44.800 --> 00:04:54.720 So statues were visible reminders of the great king, a reminder of who the people represented and whose value system they represented. 00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:59.839 When God made Adam and Eve, he said, Let us make man in our image. 00:04:59.839 --> 00:05:05.759 There is one great king, the God who is the owner of all this land he created. 00:05:05.759 --> 00:05:10.480 And he said, Let us make man in our image and likeness. 00:05:10.480 --> 00:05:12.959 So what was Adam and Eve's purpose? 00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:22.319 Their purpose, just like those statues, and just like our purpose, is to represent God, the great king and his value system and his reign. 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:30.079 Only they were not stone statues, they were living, breathing, visible representations of the invisible God. 00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:39.759 God owns the land and he made it, and he has co-rulers, us, to harness its potential and represent him in the midst of it. 00:05:39.759 --> 00:05:44.480 We are the visible representation of the invisible God. 00:05:44.480 --> 00:05:48.879 So when people look at us, they are supposed to implications, it radically changed the way that I think. 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:08.399 And I know many of you did not hear the term creation mandate, but I'm sure most of you have heard that we were made in the image of God. 00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:14.240 I'm sure most of you understand that what it means to be made in the image of God is to be like him and to look like him. 00:06:14.240 --> 00:06:23.439 So we probably knew that before we came, but I think it's a truth that we just pass over and don't really think about what that looks like in everyday life. 00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:28.000 So when people look at you, are you reflecting who you worship? 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:30.319 Am I reflecting who I worship? 00:06:30.319 --> 00:06:36.160 Am I representing King Jesus and living out and showing others his values? 00:06:36.160 --> 00:06:45.439 When we function the way that God designed us to function, as image bearers, he created us to be, what would you think would be the result of that? 00:06:45.439 --> 00:06:50.879 If we truly represented God and his value system to the world, what would the outcome be? 00:06:50.879 --> 00:07:18.480 Well, we would be fruitful and we would multiply and we would subdue the earth and we would take dominion in righteousness and holiness, obeying the statutes that God gave us, and then the whole world would see the greatness of our great king and the righteous and holy value system he has, and others will worship him too, until, let's say it together, the whole earth is filled with his glory, right? 00:07:18.480 --> 00:07:19.920 feel that you're just going through the motions? 00:09:11.039 --> 00:09:22.799 Do you find that oftentimes your good service does not come with an overwhelming attitude of overflowing joy that springs from your heart? 00:09:22.799 --> 00:09:31.200 Do you sometimes feel that your righteous acts do not come as a result of your gratitude for what Christ has done for you? 00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:37.120 Do you feel that your righteous deeds lack an awareness of God's grace toward you? 00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:41.600 Or do you often feel like, well, I know it's the right thing to do? 00:09:41.600 --> to slow down and really think about how we have lived the Christian life. 00:12:29.519 --> 00:12:36.480 So often we focus on the imperatives, the things that we are to do, how we are supposed to obey. you ever find yourself doing the right thing while grumbling in your heart? 00:12:56.159 --> 00:13:09.519 As I go through some examples, I want us to reflect on our actions, our thinking, and our how you would act or think or remote versus how an image bearer of God would in the way Jesus would. 00:13:47.759 --> 00:13:55.440 So you are washing dishes while grumbling because someone left the serve in an area of ministry and you feel frustrated because someone else isn't doing their part. 00:14:10.240 --> 00:14:15.440 Or you're frustrated because someone is in a position of ministry that you want to be in. 00:14:15.440 --> 00:14:22.000 Your friend tells you she is going on vacation with a mutual friend and you are not invited. 00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:28.080 You tell your friend you're happy for her, but in your heart, you are jealous and upset that you weren't included. 00:14:28.080 --> 00:14:38.480 You serve because you love Jesus, only to feel hurt when no one notices what you are having a conversation with someone, and before you know it, you find yourself or the other person being defensive and you feel annoyed. 00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:58.960 You pick up dirty laundry off complain over other sin or gossip to others about it, but you are unwilling to love your sister or brother in Christ and go directly to them. 00:15:32.639 --> 00:15:40.480 So I've tried to spend a lot of time speaking on the indicatives, the truth, or the why, the motivator behind the command. 00:15:40.480 --> 00:15:53.039 I do this because if we don't understand our purpose, if we don't understand why God created us, if we don't understand what Christ has done, we will never be able to obey this command without frustration. 00:15:53.039 --> 00:16:13.039 If we are not aware of our utterly sinful state before a holy God, if we are not completely enveloped in the love and grace of Christ, if we are not in awe of his forgiveness for us and how he rescued us from sin, we will never love God and love others in the way he designed us to. 00:16:13.039 --> 00:16:36.000 We may be theologically accurate in our churches, we may say the right things and do the right things, but are they are we truly caught up in the goodness and grace of God that our actions, thoughts, and feelings intuitively come from a heart of thanksgiving that is expressed in righteousness that brings glory to God? We want what we want because we are deceived into thinking that God is withholding good from us. 00:17:48.480 --> 00:17:59.759 We're gonna talk about how some of those things are not actually sinful things, but they oftentimes lead to sinful behaviors or responses. 00:17:59.759 --> 00:18:09.519 So if our desire determines our behavior and our behavior is sinful, then what needs to change? 00:18:09.519 --> 00:18:11.119 Our desire. 00:18:11.119 --> 00:18:16.480 It is the desire of the heart that needs to change, not just our actions. 00:18:16.480 --> 00:18:18.000 Sounds simple, right? be supplanted and overcome by another desire that is greater. 00:18:29.759 --> 00:18:33.200 So let's just think of some examples in everyday life. 00:18:33.200 --> 00:18:39.279 Have you ever seen a parent bribe a child into obeying by offering them something they really want? 00:18:39.279 --> 00:18:44.480 I remember many years ago sitting around our table playing a game as a family. 00:18:44.480 --> 00:18:47.599 In a household of boys, there was a lot of sarcasm. 00:18:47.599 --> 00:18:50.720 You know, the kind of sarcasm that tears each other down. 00:18:50.720 --> 00:18:58.960 In every attempt I had to get one particular child to speak kindly, he just did not know how to offer words of encouragement. 00:18:58.960 --> 00:19:02.720 If sarcasm was a spiritual gift, this child had it. 00:19:02.720 --> 00:19:08.400 This actually became a source of contention because this child did not see the sin in it. 00:19:08.400 --> 00:19:11.119 And we were well into the teen years. 00:19:11.119 --> 00:19:16.799 If you don't see something as sin, you will never convince someone to change their behavior. 00:19:16.799 --> 00:19:28.319 I so desperately wanted this child to stop that I offered him $50 if he could go 30 minutes straight without a sarcastic word, but only using words that were uplifting and encouraging. 00:19:28.319 --> 00:19:31.920 It was actually quite comical how he turned this scene around. 00:19:31.920 --> 00:19:37.920 For a solid 15 minutes, we were all in hysterics as this child spewed out encouraging words. 00:19:37.920 --> 00:19:42.799 It was so out of character for him that he's a bit of a ham, so he had us cracking up. 00:19:42.799 --> 00:19:48.799 What was interesting though was how many times he was about to say something sarcastic. 00:19:48.799 --> 00:19:54.640 And then, as it was very evident to us, he caught himself and then continued with his humorous encouragement. 00:19:54.640 --> 00:19:57.279 He really wanted that 50 bucks. 00:19:57.279 --> 00:20:03.039 For a short time, that desire for money was greater than his desire for sarcasm. 00:20:03.039 --> 00:20:08.640 However, after 15 minutes, his true heart came out: sarcasm. 00:20:08.640 --> 00:20:14.240 What is interesting about it is that once I challenged him on it, he didn't agree that it was sarcasm. 00:20:14.240 --> 00:20:16.480 See, I couldn't convince him that it was sin. 00:20:16.480 --> 00:20:20.720 Ultimately, it was not the desire of his heart to be an encourager. 00:20:20.720 --> 00:20:22.079 That was the bottom line. 00:20:22.079 --> 00:20:25.359 At that point in his life, this child was a complainer. 00:20:25.359 --> 00:20:28.000 His heart would eventually come out. 00:20:28.000 --> 00:20:33.519 When we have a ruling desire in our heart, it will always find its way out. 00:20:33.519 --> 00:20:46.240 So if we want good behavior, we need new desires, and we can't force ourselves to just put off old behaviors and put on new ones, thinking that Christ on the cross was willing to forgo his greatest delight when his father's presence was taken away from him. 00:34:24.719 --> 00:34:30.159 He did this out of obedience to his father's will and out of his love for you and me. 00:34:30.159 --> 00:34:40.719 He forfeited the presence of his father on the cross so that we might have the eternal opportunity to be in the Father's presence in and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, is beholding Christ's love, meditating on Christ's love, rehearsing the gospel to ourselves over and over, and then our desires will change, and ultimately so will our behavior. 00:36:24.880 -->
