opportunity to come together as brothers and sisters and spend time in your word. 00:00:22.559 --> 00:00:32.159 Father, we thank you for your word and we thank you that we can access it, Father, and by accessing it, we can understand better your character and your will. 00:00:32.159 --> 00:00:40.320 Father, as we approach today's uh study in 2 John, we just ask you to send your Holy Spirit to be with us. 00:00:40.320 --> 00:00:48.719 We ask that uh you might just uh cause us to open our minds and hearts to the truths that you are communicating through your word. 00:00:48.719 --> 00:00:51.920 And we pray these things in Jesus' holy name. 00:00:51.920 --> 00:01:03.039 Uh so 2 John, if I could ask all of you to actually open up uh your Pew Bibles or your own Bibles, uh, you'll see uh it's page 1086 in your Pew Bibles. 00:01:03.039 --> 00:01:10.719 And what you'll see uh very quickly is that it is, in fact, a brief but a very powerful letter. 00:01:10.719 --> 00:01:20.560 Um as Jerry described last week um when he presented first John, um the Apostle John is presumed uh to be the author of this book. 00:01:20.560 --> 00:01:31.280 The Apostle John, uh one of Jesus' twelve disciples, the one along with uh Peter and James, uh, who in many ways were closest to Jesus in his ministry. 00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:42.640 And so the text doesn't specifically name him at the as the author, but as we'll walk through, and as Doug even mentioned, calling him an elder, it's pretty clear that he's the author of this letter. 00:01:42.640 --> 00:01:52.000 Um and as a reminder, uh John was uh the apostle who lived the longest, uh, so he had literally the longest life. 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.159 Uh, and he was the only uh disciple who didn't die from persecution. 00:01:56.159 --> 00:02:01.840 So uh a lot of lifetime of wisdom went into his writing of this letter. 00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:06.879 Uh a few books, uh a few uh just facts about uh this book. 00:02:06.879 --> 00:02:15.120 It's one of five books written by John, the others being his gospel, the gospel of John, first, second, and third John, as well as Revelation. 00:02:15.120 --> 00:02:20.000 Um and this book, as I mentioned, it's short, as you'll see, it's it's one chapter. 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:26.080 Uh, and it's one of only five books in the Bible that is consists of a single chapter. 00:02:26.080 --> 00:02:34.080 Uh the other ones being Obadiah, uh we have uh uh Philemon, Philemon, uh Third John, as well as Jude. 00:02:34.080 --> 00:02:36.960 Who is John writing this to? 00:02:36.960 --> 00:02:41.360 Um John addresses this writing to a woman and her children. 00:02:41.360 --> 00:02:47.360 And the content, as we go through it, you'll see, seems to be addressed to an entire church. 00:02:47.360 --> 00:02:50.719 The letter uses the term lady and children. 00:02:50.719 --> 00:02:59.759 So it is possible it's addressed to a literal woman and her family, but more likely, based on the full context of the letter, he is writing to a church. 00:02:59.759 --> 00:03:04.639 And we'll discuss this in more detail as we go through uh the greeting and text of the letter. 00:03:04.639 --> 00:03:08.319 Uh last bit of background, uh, when was this written? 00:03:08.319 --> 00:03:13.360 Uh it's presumed to be written at the same time as the other uh four books that John wrote. 00:03:13.360 --> 00:03:19.039 Uh so towards the end of his life, probably sometime between 80 and 95 A.D. 00:03:19.039 --> 00:03:20.240 Okay. 00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:27.439 So as we approach the text, uh we'll find that there are really two major themes that John's emphasizing in this letter. 00:03:27.439 --> 00:03:36.319 The first one John's focusing on is the twin foundations of truth and love as central to our faith. 00:03:36.319 --> 00:03:46.319 Truth meaning the gospel is mentioned five times, and love, which can be thought of as putting truth into practice, is mentioned four times. 00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:51.439 These two foundations help us to stay obedient to God. 00:03:51.439 --> 00:03:53.199 And they're self-reinforcing. 00:03:53.199 --> 00:03:58.000 As we grow in our knowledge of God's truth, we will demonstrate more of God's love. 00:03:58.000 --> 00:04:06.960 And as we grow in our love for God and His divine plan, creation, and His people, we will grow in our depth and understanding of God's truth. 00:04:06.960 --> 00:04:14.400 So that's the first major theme, this idea of truth and love as foundational to our to our faith. 00:04:14.400 --> 00:04:17.199 The other one is to watch out. 00:04:17.199 --> 00:04:31.439 Uh Doug actually mentioned that when uh we were talking about 1 Peter, but there's a very strong message to watch out, in this case for deceivers or false teachers who are teaching that Jesus rose spiritually, but not physically. 00:04:31.439 --> 00:04:35.279 Christians should have nothing to do with such teachers, John warns us. 00:04:35.279 --> 00:04:46.079 So therefore, previewing the two main lessons of this book, and this is with a nod to Pastor Doug and his love for alliteration, um, we are to one, walk obediently. 00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:48.879 Two, we are to watch out. 00:04:48.879 --> 00:04:50.879 So walk obediently and watch out. 00:04:50.879 --> 00:04:52.959 We are to walk obediently, how? 00:04:52.959 --> 00:04:55.920 In truth and love, which reinforce each other. 00:04:55.920 --> 00:04:58.160 And what are we to watch out for? 00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:00.560 In particular, obstacles to our faith. 00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:04.480 In this case, wicked deceivers or false teachers. 00:05:04.480 --> 00:05:08.319 So let's turn to reading God's Word. 00:05:08.319 --> 00:05:16.879 And given the relatively few number of verses in this text, um, I'd like to use our time tonight to exegete all 13 of the verses. 00:05:16.879 --> 00:05:22.319 So if you could turn your Bibles to 2 John if you're not already there, um, it would be helpful. 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:25.279 There will be four sections in this group in this letter. 00:05:25.279 --> 00:05:26.000 It's pretty clear. 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:33.600 There's a greeting, there's a section on walk obediently and love and truth, there's a section on watching out for false teachers, and then there's a closing. 00:05:33.600 --> 00:05:35.439 So let's start with the greeting. 00:05:35.439 --> 00:05:39.439 Uh, and greeting you'll find verses 1 through 3, which I'll read. 00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:51.920 The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth, because of the truth that remains in us and will be with us forever. 00:05:51.920 --> 00:06:00.319 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Son of the Father in truth and love. 00:06:00.319 --> 00:06:06.879 So John opens with the words the elder to the elect lady and her children, which raises two immediate questions. 00:06:06.879 --> 00:06:10.160 Who is the elder and who is the elect lady and her children? 00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:14.639 And as we've spoken up front, the elder is clearly the apostle John. 00:06:14.639 --> 00:06:24.639 And this designation is probably both a reflection of John's position within the early Christian church as well as the advancing years that we spoke about as he was the last of the living apostles. 00:06:24.639 --> 00:06:28.560 Elder, of course, is a term uh which describes a church leader. 00:06:28.560 --> 00:06:38.319 Uh, we first find it in the New Testament, uh, in Acts 11 30, when Paul and Barnabas brought gifts from Antioch to the elders at the church in Judea. 00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:43.600 And we also see the requirements of an el uh for an elder uh being detailed in 1 Timothy. 00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:53.120 Umte, and uh Pastor Doug uh you set me up perfectly, it's not the only time that an apostle called himself elder. 00:06:53.120 --> 00:06:56.399 In fact, in 1 Peter 5, we see the same exact thing. 00:06:56.399 --> 00:07:09.439 So even though most epistles typically open with the author disclosing his name and not using the term the elder, this isn't the only time that we see uh in in the Bible that an apostle does call himself elder. 00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:10.480 Okay. 00:07:10.480 --> 00:07:25.439 And and one other just note as we start, um, it's interesting that John uses the word elder to describe himself in this second letter, um, but uh he didn't use it in the first letter that we covered last week with Jerry. 00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:41.040 Um and in doing some research and in and looking at the commentaries, it appears that at least some believe this second letter formed almost a cover letter that was sent along with the first John letter that we worked through last week. 00:07:41.040 --> 00:07:50.160 The first letter, as you'll recall, you know, five chapters, a lot of exhortation, um, uh a lot of content, you know, pastoral content from John. 00:07:50.160 --> 00:07:54.000 Um, whereas this feels a little bit more overview-like. 00:07:54.000 --> 00:08:06.319 Um so it's not, I'm not stating that factually, but it is possible that it was accompany an accompaniment of a uh, as I said, a cover letter that uh uh went along with the first John letter. 00:08:06.319 --> 00:08:08.480 So that's the elder. 00:08:08.480 --> 00:08:12.720 The elect lady and her children uh who John was writing to. 00:08:12.720 --> 00:08:19.920 Again, again, you know, we could take this literally and say, oh, was John really writing to a woman and her children? 00:08:19.920 --> 00:08:22.800 And that is certainly one possible interpretation. 00:08:22.800 --> 00:08:32.559 Um but based on context, uh, that term elect lady most likely refers to a specific church and her children being the members of that church. 00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:39.759 Um this metaphor, elect lady and her children, to refer to a group of believers wouldn't have been unusual to readers at that time. 00:08:39.759 --> 00:08:45.679 Uh, for example, there are numerous times in the Old Testament that Israel is referred to as a woman with children. 00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:49.039 We see that in Ezekiel uh 16 and Hosea 2. 00:08:49.039 --> 00:08:53.279 Uh and in the New Testament, of course, we know the church is called the bride of Jesus. 00:08:53.279 --> 00:08:57.279 We see that in in Ephesians chapter 5, Revelation chapter 22. 00:08:57.279 --> 00:09:01.440 John himself refers to church members as children in his first letter. 00:09:01.440 --> 00:09:04.080 Uh that's in 1 John chapter 2. 00:09:04.080 --> 00:09:10.159 And as we'll see later in this closing of this letter, John also refers to an elect sister. 00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:19.440 And so, given that context, it's likely that elect sister is some sort of sister church, if you will, to the church that John's writing to. 00:09:19.440 --> 00:09:30.240 One final question that this opening raises you know, why didn't John use the church's name or the person's name, like many of the other epistles do? 00:09:30.240 --> 00:09:45.440 In reading various commentaries, um, they theorize that John didn't name this particular church because it was written at a time of significant persecution, and that level of persecution varied depending on where you were within the uh Roman Empire. 00:09:45.440 --> 00:09:59.759 So it's possible uh the church he was writing to was in an area of significant persecution, and he may have been driven by a concern that if the letter was intercepted, it would put those uh who were on the receiving end of this letter at great personal risk. 00:09:59.759 --> 00:10:12.399 Okay, so moving uh through verses one and two, uh, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth because of the truth that remains in us and will be with us forever. 00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:18.240 Well, one of the first things we're taught to observe when we read scripture um is to observe. 00:10:18.240 --> 00:10:21.679 Sorry, one of the first things we learn is that we're to observe. 00:10:21.679 --> 00:10:26.639 And we'll see that John mentions the word truth three times in these first two verses. 00:10:26.639 --> 00:10:37.120 By truth, John clearly means the gospel, the good news of the incarnation, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which has the power to save those who believe. 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:53.360 John likely chose to emphasize truth so strongly up front because he was trying to contrast God's truth with that of the false teachings that were being um you know talked about by these false teachers that we're going to get to. 00:10:53.360 --> 00:10:58.080 So, really to draw the audience's attention is that there's truth and then there's false teaching. 00:10:58.080 --> 00:11:02.559 Um we'll return to that you know later as we go through the book. 00:11:02.559 --> 00:11:09.039 Um, but for now, let's focus on the fact that John and all those who had received and accepted the gospel have the truth. 00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:17.840 And John further encourages his readers by reminding him, reminding them that this truth remains in us and will be with us forever. 00:11:17.840 --> 00:11:22.080 The key words here are remains and forever. 00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:29.519 We can all take great confidence in the fact that the gospel's etched in us from now into eternity. 00:11:29.519 --> 00:11:35.679 We can all take great confidence in the fact that God's plan for salvation will never change. 00:11:35.679 --> 00:11:48.720 And in another theme that we'll return to, John not only has truth, but he puts his truth into action by loving the elect lady and her children, that is the church and its members. 00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:55.679 John further notes that these members weren't only loved by John, but they were also loved by all those who know the truth. 00:11:55.679 --> 00:12:06.639 This reminds us that when we know and love the gospel, like John, we'll put this into practice by loving our fellow brothers and sisters, who we also know and love in the truth. 00:12:06.639 --> 00:12:11.039 John completes his greeting in verse 3 with a blessing to his readers. 00:12:11.039 --> 00:12:18.799 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 00:12:18.799 --> 00:12:23.360 Let's focus for a moment on the word will in the sentence. 00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:26.480 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us. 00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:31.519 John didn't merely wish grace, mercy, and peace for his readers. 00:12:31.519 --> 00:12:39.919 He confidently declared that through the gospel, we do and will always have grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father. 00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:49.200 And we have these in God's truth and love because God provides his grace, mercy, and peace to those who accept the gospel as a result of his great love for his children. 00:12:49.200 --> 00:12:53.120 The reverse is actually true too. 00:12:53.120 --> 00:13:02.159 Apart from God's truth and love, we can never truly experience grace, mercy, and peace. 00:13:02.159 --> 00:13:14.240 Also note in verse 3 John deliberately does not just say the words Jesus Christ, but he calls him the Son of the Father. 00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:25.759 He's likely doing this again to combat that false truth, not false truth, but that that falsehood from those who are denying Jesus as the incarnation of the true God. 00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:35.679 John's joining God the Father with Jesus the Son, as is a one and only Son, to emphasize that they together are the truth. 00:13:35.679 --> 00:13:47.039 For God the Father sent his one and only Son in his infinite mercy and love to die on the cross, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 00:13:47.039 --> 00:13:55.840 So now we move from the greeting to the next section, uh, the idea of walking obediently, one of the two main themes from today. 00:13:55.840 --> 00:13:58.399 And again, it's walking obediently how? 00:13:58.399 --> 00:14:00.960 In truth and love, which will reinforce each other. 00:14:00.960 --> 00:14:02.240 Verses 4 through 6. 00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:02.879 Let's read. 00:14:02.879 --> 00:14:09.840 I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth, in keeping with the command we have received from the Father. 00:14:09.840 --> 00:14:18.799 So now I ask you, dear lady, not as if I were writing you a new command, but one we have had from the beginning, that we love one another. 00:14:18.799 --> 00:14:23.440 This is love, that we walk according to his commands. 00:14:23.440 --> 00:14:28.080 This is the command as you have heard it from the beginning, that you walk in love. 00:14:28.080 --> 00:14:34.559 In verse 4, John's delighted to learn that at least some of the members of the church are living faithfully. 00:14:34.559 --> 00:14:41.600 These Christians didn't merely believe the gospel, they were putting their faith into practice by walking in truth. 00:14:41.600 --> 00:14:44.320 And what does walking in truth mean? 00:14:44.320 --> 00:14:50.240 It means living in line with God's revealed truth, just as God commanded us to do. 00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:56.399 Let's look to Scripture for other ways that we see that command to walk in truth. 00:14:56.399 --> 00:14:59.759 Psalm 86, verse 11. 00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:03.919 Teach me your way, Lord, and I will live by your truth. 00:15:03.919 --> 00:15:06.960 John 14, 6. 00:15:06.960 --> 00:15:11.919 Jesus told him, we all know, I am the way, the truth, and the life. 00:15:11.919 --> 00:15:14.559 No one comes to the Father except through me. 00:15:14.559 --> 00:15:18.159 Colossians chapter 1, verses 9 and 10. 00:15:18.159 --> 00:15:29.519 We're asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him. 00:15:29.519 --> 00:15:31.360 And one more. 00:15:31.360 --> 00:15:38.480 John himself spoke about the idea of walking in truth in his first letter, 1 John chapter 2, verse 6. 00:15:38.480 --> 00:15:44.399 The one who says, I have come to know him and yet doesn't keep his commands, is a liar. 00:15:44.399 --> 00:15:47.679 And the truth is not in him. 00:15:47.679 --> 00:15:58.799 So these verses collectively tell us that we are to love God by walking in truth, by faithfully obeying and holding on to the truth of who he is and what he promises. 00:15:58.799 --> 00:16:02.639 Living in obedience to God's word is not a choice for we Christians. 00:16:02.639 --> 00:16:04.159 It's a requirement. 00:16:04.159 --> 00:16:12.879 God commands all of us to walk in truth, and doing so demonstrates that we may remain steadfast in our walk with the Lord. 00:16:12.879 --> 00:16:17.519 Also note at the beginning of this verse 4 the words very glad. 00:16:17.519 --> 00:16:19.600 John's very glad to find this. 00:16:19.600 --> 00:16:25.120 Like John, all believers should find great joy in the faithfulness of other believers. 00:16:25.120 --> 00:16:30.399 The things that cause us to rejoice are a significant indicator of what's in our own hearts. 00:16:30.399 --> 00:16:38.799 If we love truth and love people, we too will be delighted when people live faithfully according to God's word. 00:16:38.799 --> 00:16:41.440 Continuing to verse 5. 00:16:41.440 --> 00:16:48.720 So now I ask you, dear lady, not as if I were writing you a new command, but one we have had from the beginning, that we love one another. 00:16:48.720 --> 00:16:56.480 John implores the church to put faith into action by following God's command that we love one another. 00:16:56.480 --> 00:17:02.799 John, of course, is referencing Jesus' own words, his exhortation to his disciples at the Last Supper. 00:17:02.799 --> 00:17:05.599 John chapter 13, verse 34. 00:17:05.599 --> 00:17:07.279 I give you a new command. 00:17:07.279 --> 00:17:08.960 Love one another. 00:17:08.960 --> 00:17:15.119 Just as I love you, I have loved you, you are also to love one another. 00:17:15.119 --> 00:17:22.000 As Christians remain faithful, John stresses a key aspect of this faithfulness. 00:17:22.000 --> 00:17:25.119 Loving one another as Jesus loved us. 00:17:25.119 --> 00:17:33.680 Our love should be driven by a desire to reflect the same love that Jesus showed his bride, the church, and all of his acts of grace towards us. 00:17:33.680 --> 00:17:43.599 Mirroring Jesus' own words, John reminds his leaders that this command, his readers, that this command to love is not new, but something they have known from the beginning. 00:17:43.599 --> 00:17:48.400 Loving one another is foundational to Christianity and to our walk with God. 00:17:48.400 --> 00:17:54.559 Just as we are commanded to live in obedience to God, we're also commanded to love one another. 00:17:54.559 --> 00:18:00.319 Moving to verse 6, this is love, that we walk according to his commands. 00:18:00.319 --> 00:18:04.880 This is the command as you have heard it from the beginning, that you walk in love. 00:18:04.880 --> 00:18:14.240 Here, John goes on to define love as not just loving one another, but also walking according to God's commands. 00:18:14.240 --> 00:18:15.359 These are linked. 00:18:15.359 --> 00:18:21.920 We are commanded to love, and a critical demonstration of our love of God is to obey his commands. 00:18:21.920 --> 00:18:28.400 For to love God is to obey him, as John himself wrote in his own gospel, John 14, verse 15. 00:18:28.400 --> 00:18:31.039 If you love me, you will keep my commands. 00:18:31.039 --> 00:18:33.599 So what does it mean to love others then? 00:18:33.599 --> 00:18:39.200 To love others means to encourage them and help them to obey God, just as we are to obey God. 00:18:39.200 --> 00:18:43.759 It's not merely showing affection to or support for them. 00:18:43.759 --> 00:18:46.000 It is instead a spiritual love. 00:18:46.000 --> 00:18:57.200 Today our culture too often teaches that to love someone is to indulge them, to let them do what they want, or perhaps even worse, to respect their truth. 00:18:57.200 --> 00:18:58.559 You've heard that? 00:18:58.559 --> 00:19:06.079 Of course, we offer our loved ones affection and affection and gifts, even sometimes to the point of indulgence. 00:19:06.079 --> 00:19:08.079 But that's not what John's talking about here. 00:19:08.079 --> 00:19:12.240 Spiritual indulgence is not true love. 00:19:12.240 --> 00:19:19.839 We don't demonstrate love when we disobey God and do something to or with another person that God forbids. 00:19:19.839 --> 00:19:21.440 That's obviously sin. 00:19:21.440 --> 00:19:27.440 And if we encourage or aid someone to do something that God forbids, this too is sin. 00:19:27.440 --> 00:19:30.160 The opposite of genuine love. 00:19:30.160 --> 00:19:39.440 Rather, we demonstrate love by sharing God's truth and seeking to prevent someone from disobeying God and instead urging them to follow God. 00:19:39.440 --> 00:19:45.839 If we love God, we will obey his commandments and encourage others who love God to do so as well. 00:19:45.839 --> 00:20:01.680 We don't do this to be legalistic or simply out of our fear for God, but rather because we know God has provided these commands out of his great love for us and in his great wisdom because they are best for us. 00:20:01.680 --> 00:20:07.359 These commands are a gift from us to us from God to direct our daily choices in living. 00:20:07.359 --> 00:20:12.640 Why wouldn't we want to share the truth in God's word with those we love? 00:20:12.640 --> 00:20:23.839 So to summarize this section on walking obediently in truth and love, verses four through six, to walk obediently with God means we must walk in truth and in love. 00:20:23.839 --> 00:20:31.519 And these three qualities, love, truth, and obedience, together are foundational to our Christian faith. 00:20:31.519 --> 00:20:46.240 As we put our faith into action by exhibiting any one of these qualities, love, truth, or obedience, we will find ourselves growing in the other two qualities as well, thereby growing closer to God in our own walk with Him. 00:20:46.240 --> 00:20:48.960 So that's the first major message here. 00:20:48.960 --> 00:20:50.400 Walk obediently. 00:20:50.400 --> 00:20:53.279 The second major message you'll recall is watch out. 00:20:53.279 --> 00:20:57.519 Watch out, in particular, about false teachers and deceivers. 00:20:57.519 --> 00:21:01.920 So that's what verses 7 through 11 speak to. 00:21:01.920 --> 00:21:02.799 Let's read. 00:21:02.799 --> 00:21:06.079 Many deceivers have gone out into the world. 00:21:06.079 --> 00:21:09.119 They do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. 00:21:09.119 --> 00:21:12.559 This is the deceiver and the Antichrist. 00:21:12.559 --> 00:21:18.000 Watch yourselves so you don't lose what we have worked for, but that you may receive a full reward. 00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:23.519 Anyone who does not remain in Christ's teaching, but goes beyond it, does not have God. 00:21:23.519 --> 00:21:28.640 The one who remains in that teaching, this one has both the Father and the Son. 00:21:28.640 --> 00:21:35.680 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your home, and don't greet him. 00:21:35.680 --> 00:21:39.839 For the one who greets him shares in his evil works. 00:21:39.839 --> 00:21:51.759 After describing what it meant to walk in truth, in this next section, John's switching emphasis to warn to protect ourselves against those who are not in the truth. 00:21:51.759 --> 00:21:56.319 In this case, the false teachers who had denied Jesus' incarnation. 00:21:56.319 --> 00:22:02.640 They had denied that Jesus had come in the flesh, as Jerry explained last week. 00:22:02.640 --> 00:22:07.680 The church that uh John wrote this letter to had become a battleground. 00:22:07.680 --> 00:22:12.960 Certain teachers had advanced an alternative and absolutely false message about Jesus Christ. 00:22:12.960 --> 00:22:20.319 These teachers had been influenced by contemporary Greek philosophy, and they divided the human Jesus from the divine Jesus. 00:22:20.319 --> 00:22:32.319 They taught that only Jesus, the man, was crucified, while the spiritual, non-human, non-material Christ as God did not and could not have suffered the indignity of the cross. 00:22:32.319 --> 00:22:37.119 These ideas are heresy, denying the truth of who Jesus is. 00:22:37.119 --> 00:22:42.720 And also claim, they, by the way, they also claim that this truth was only revealed to a select few. 00:22:42.720 --> 00:22:48.160 And together, these ideas came together to form a movement called Gnosticism. 00:22:48.160 --> 00:22:56.000 So turning to verse 7, John calls these false teachers, these Gnostics, deceivers and the Antichrist. 00:22:56.000 --> 00:23:00.319 They were antichrists because they rejected the truth of who Jesus is. 00:23:00.319 --> 00:23:04.880 They basically denied that the Word had become flesh and had come into the world. 00:23:04.880 --> 00:23:11.200 Their teaching separating material Jesus from the spiritual Jesus completely undermines the gospel. 00:23:11.200 --> 00:23:21.920 The good news that Jesus had come to us in the flesh, as both God and man, to be the once and forever propitiation for our sins. 00:23:21.920 --> 00:23:32.079 And John says that anyone who intentionally denies the truth about Jesus is not merely a deceiver, but has the spirit of the Antichrist. 00:23:32.079 --> 00:23:37.119 So what should believers do when faced with heretical teachings like these? 00:23:37.119 --> 00:23:49.359 First, in John 8, verse 8, John exhorts believers to watch yourselves so you don't lose what we have worked for, but that you may receive a full reward. 00:23:49.359 --> 00:23:56.799 John's urging them to beware, that is, to watch themselves, so they are not led astray by this false teaching. 00:23:56.799 --> 00:24:02.559 As we discussed earlier in the walk obediently section, believers can obey God if they're not in the truth. 00:24:02.559 --> 00:24:04.160 That's clear and self-evident. 00:24:04.160 --> 00:24:10.799 But he continues with a statement about the consequences of not following this false teaching. 00:24:10.799 --> 00:24:15.519 Losing what we've worked for and not receiving a full reward. 00:24:15.519 --> 00:24:21.279 Wait, what does it mean that we could lose what we've worked for? 00:24:21.279 --> 00:24:26.720 As Christians, we know that we are saved by God's grace alone, not by works. 00:24:27.279 --> 00:24:27.519 Right? 00:24:27.759 --> 00:24:29.920 Ephesians chapter 2, verses 8 and 9. 00:24:29.920 --> 00:24:31.920 One, I'm sure many of you are very familiar. 00:24:31.920 --> 00:24:41.119 For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is God's gift, not from works, so that no one can boast. 00:24:41.119 --> 00:24:49.839 So clearly the losing here has to refer to something other than our salvation, our souls. 00:24:49.839 --> 00:24:53.119 For only God works to save souls. 00:24:53.119 --> 00:24:57.200 So what then were John and the early Christian disciples working for? 00:24:57.200 --> 00:25:04.160 As they shared the gospel, they were engaged in teaching, discipling, encouraging, and rebuking. 00:25:04.160 --> 00:25:11.279 This had the impact of building early believers in their faith and helping them to become more spiritually mature. 00:25:11.279 --> 00:25:20.319 That work of discipling, encouraging, teaching, rebuking is the work that John doesn't want to be in vain. 00:25:20.319 --> 00:25:29.359 The sharing and spreading of the gospel and the impact this had on helping these early believers in growing mature and walking in truth and love. 00:25:29.359 --> 00:25:31.599 And so that's from the teacher's side. 00:25:31.599 --> 00:25:33.039 What about from the believer's side? 00:25:33.039 --> 00:25:38.400 Um these believers, of course, don't contribute to their own salvation. 00:25:38.400 --> 00:25:45.839 But they still took actions that is work to grow and learn and strive to be more Christ-like, just as we do today. 00:25:45.839 --> 00:25:55.039 In fact, John uses the word remain in the next uh verse, verse 9, uh, to describe what a true believer looks like. 00:25:55.039 --> 00:26:02.480 And a mark of a follower of Christ is one who perseveres in his or her faith. 00:26:02.480 --> 00:26:16.480 If they turn away, they will have wasted their efforts to be more Christ-like, and more specifically, they will have revealed themselves to be false false believers, because they didn't persevere in their faith. 00:26:16.480 --> 00:26:20.240 It's really important to be clear here. 00:26:20.240 --> 00:26:23.920 No one can lose a salvation they once had. 00:26:23.920 --> 00:26:28.640 If God has truly elected you as one of his children, you will remain there. 00:26:28.640 --> 00:26:36.880 And we know and trust in the fact that only God's grace and mercy, as expressed by Christ dying on the cross for us, saves. 00:26:36.880 --> 00:26:42.400 Nothing in us earns salvation, therefore nothing we do loses salvation. 00:26:42.400 --> 00:26:51.039 But turning to false teaching could reveal that despite all outward appearances, that person was never a true believer. 00:26:51.039 --> 00:27:01.039 As John himself summarized in his first letter, 1 John 9, verse 19, they went out from us, but they did not belong to us. 00:27:01.039 --> 00:27:05.839 For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. 00:27:05.839 --> 00:27:13.039 However, they went out so that it might be made clear that none of them belongs to us. 00:27:13.039 --> 00:27:18.960 As for the end of this verse 8, receiving a full reward. 00:27:18.960 --> 00:27:24.559 This refers to the eternal benefits we receive from trusting Christ and persevering in that faith. 00:27:24.559 --> 00:27:29.920 These rewards are revealed in Revelation, Revelation chapter 22, verse 12. 00:27:29.920 --> 00:27:37.920 Look, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me to repay each person according to his work. 00:27:37.920 --> 00:27:48.799 This doesn't mean that we earn such a ward merely from our own deeds, but instead that God rewards those deeds which are fueled by his grace. 00:27:48.799 --> 00:28:01.279 Anyone who does not remain in Christ's teaching but goes beyond it does not have God. 00:28:01.279 --> 00:28:05.839 The one who remains in that teaching, this one, has both the Father and the Son. 00:28:05.839 --> 00:28:11.440 We hold that all scripture is complete and inerrant. 00:28:11.440 --> 00:28:16.160 2 Timothy 2, uh, chapter 3, uh, verses 16 and 17. 00:28:16.160 --> 00:28:27.519 All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 00:28:27.519 --> 00:28:38.400 By going beyond Scripture, as these teachers were doing, a teacher denies the Bible as being God's final word and his final revelation to us. 00:28:38.400 --> 00:28:45.519 He's heretically placing his own words that he's adding on equal footing to that of God. 00:28:45.519 --> 00:28:49.200 That teacher has neither God nor salvation. 00:28:49.200 --> 00:29:05.279 And John again warns us that not only believers, I'm sorry, not only teachers, but even those apparent believers who have heard God's true inspired word, but still choose to follow such extra false teaching, also live outside God's grace. 00:29:05.279 --> 00:29:13.839 So differently, if a person teaches something about God the Father or Jesus which is grossly false or outside Scripture, they cannot be considered a believer. 00:29:13.839 --> 00:29:29.839 But even more, even those who stray from God's word as a result of such false teaching and who fundamentally misunderstand or reject who Jesus is, those people are called unbelievers too. 00:29:29.839 --> 00:29:44.720 Someone can attend church, regularly profess his or her faith, and appear on the outside to be a believer, but if they teach or truly embrace a fundamentally false doctrine, that would show they were never saved. 00:29:44.720 --> 00:29:57.039 But on the other hand, which should be great comfort to us, John verse 9 also reveals that we Christians are allowed to be ignorant of certain biblical teachings and still be saved. 00:29:57.039 --> 00:30:03.039 For none of us is perfect, um, and none of us None of us is fully mature in our faith and understanding. 00:30:03.039 --> 00:30:12.640 As long as we remain in the truth, that is, in the gospel, John assures us we have both God the Father and the Son. 00:30:12.640 --> 00:30:17.119 A true believer will last in the face and faith and persevere. 00:30:17.119 --> 00:30:23.440 Praise God that we are not judged according to our inadequacies and meager efforts. 00:30:23.440 --> 00:30:24.880 Amen. 00:30:24.880 --> 00:30:36.480 Moving to verses 10 and 11, John gives specific advice how believers should deal with false teachers, who he rightly saw as corrupting the early church. 00:30:36.480 --> 00:30:38.480 Verses 10 and 11. 00:30:38.480 --> 00:30:47.519 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, that is the gospel, do not receive him into your home and don't greet him. little younger. 00:31:16.000 --> 00:31:24.480 Does this mean I can't say hello to the nice but misinformed Jehovah's Witness teacher when I pass him on the street? 00:31:24.480 --> 00:31:29.680 Or I can't play pickleball with the pac Catholic priest who showed up at the park courts? 00:31:29.680 --> 00:31:31.279 That one's not personal. 00:31:31.279 --> 00:31:40.640 And I can't invite the Mormon preacher who is a baseball fan to watch a game at my house with my fellow Mets friends. 00:31:40.640 --> 00:31:41.759 That one is personal. 00:31:41.759 --> 00:31:47.119 Is this what John is really really warning us about? 00:31:47.119 --> 00:32:02.720 Not surprisingly, there's an important difference in what it meant to greet or show hospitality in John's words, to receive someone uh into their home at the time of John's letter versus today. 00:32:02.720 --> 00:32:13.680 During John's time, church leaders uh and teachers who traveled could expect to be shown hospitality by local believers when they arrived in new towns. 00:32:13.680 --> 00:32:17.119 Various epistles speak to such expectations. 00:32:17.119 --> 00:32:25.839 For example, Paul's request of the Colossians to show hospitality to Mark, or um the for the Corinthians to receive Timothy. 00:32:25.839 --> 00:32:35.680 This often meant traveling evangelists were accepted into local homes, and these local homes were also serving as the local church. 00:32:35.680 --> 00:32:36.960 Okay? 00:32:36.960 --> 00:32:42.160 So these teachers were frequently given aid, even by such homes and churches. 00:32:42.160 --> 00:32:53.440 So receiving a false teacher into that type of home, also serving as a local church, would likely signal an acceptance of these false teachings. 00:32:53.440 --> 00:33:01.680 You know, a willingness to they were willing to introduce them to other believers within the church, um, they were perhaps even willing to financially support them. 00:33:01.680 --> 00:33:12.240 This would mean if you're engaging and supporting a false teacher to that extent, it would indicate that you were promoting that false doctrine. 00:33:12.240 --> 00:33:22.160 And therefore, if you're supporting and promoting this false doctrine, you are in fact, in John's own words, sharing in his evil works. 00:33:22.160 --> 00:33:42.160 Various commentaries further clarify that the warning against greeting, right, that you see here, and receiving in the original Greek context meant have no religious connection with these false teachers, nor act towards them so as to induce others to believe you acknowledge him as a brother. 00:33:42.160 --> 00:33:52.079 The key here is that clearly we're not to associate in such a way that would indicate acceptance of these false beliefs. 00:33:52.079 --> 00:34:02.079 So there's at least a chance John would give a pass to some of my Pastor Michael-like questions that I asked about greeting or showing hospitality to false teachers. 00:34:02.079 --> 00:34:04.079 Or maybe not. 00:34:04.079 --> 00:34:14.320 In my preparation for today, I was talking with Pastor Doug, and he shared a story about John that was recorded in an early Christian book called About Heresies. 00:34:14.320 --> 00:34:27.199 In this story, John was in an Ephesus bathhouse going about his business when he saw his Gnostic enemy, Cyrinthus, was also in the same bathhouse. 00:34:27.199 --> 00:34:29.840 How did John react? 00:34:29.840 --> 00:34:49.199 He immediately fled the building, hopefully with his clothes on, shouting, and he shouted, Let us flee, lest even the bathhouse fall down, because Corinthus, the enemy of the truth, is within. 00:34:49.199 --> 00:34:56.559 So it can safely say be said that John not only walked in truth, but also in his own advice. 00:34:56.559 --> 00:35:12.639 While John might be at the extreme end of what he viewed as permissible social interaction, we should all use our discernment to make sure in our interactions with others that we don't communicate acceptance of such false beliefs. 00:35:12.639 --> 00:35:24.880 One final note from this section John contrasts how we should treat false teachers versus how we should treat those uh teachers who are faithfully teaching the gospel. 00:35:24.880 --> 00:35:34.159 Summarizing this section, we're not to greet or receive those who do not bring gospel truth, lest we lose all that we've worked for. 00:35:34.159 --> 00:35:36.400 But the opposite is true too. 00:35:36.400 --> 00:35:48.320 We're clearly instructed to show hospitality and to spiritually greet in love those who teach the truth as an outpouring of our own faith and our own love for God. 00:35:48.320 --> 00:35:57.679 So moving from that second point, right, about watching out for these false teachers, we come to the closing, verses 12 and 13. 00:35:57.679 --> 00:36:02.880 Though I have many things to write to you, I don't want to use paper and ink. 00:36:02.880 --> 00:36:08.239 Instead, I hope to come to you and talk face to face so that our joy may be complete. 00:36:08.239 --> 00:36:11.440 The children of your elect sister send you greetings. 00:36:11.440 --> 00:36:20.800 In particular, verse 12. 00:36:20.800 --> 00:36:27.360 John has revealed himself to be a faithful elder with much more that he wants to teach and share with this church. 00:36:27.360 --> 00:36:36.719 He longs to see them in person instead of writing them from a distance, as he wants to experience communion and fellowship with those under his pastoral care. 00:36:36.719 --> 00:36:46.239 His strong exhortations in this letter about walking in truth and love and avoiding false teaching have clearly come from a place of love for the flock. 00:36:46.239 --> 00:37:00.320 Like any faithful pastor, he wants members of this church to continue to grow in the Word, in their spiritual maturity, and in their walk with God, so that his and his fellow teachers' joy may be complete. 00:37:00.320 --> 00:37:09.440 Everything about this letter reveals John's love for his people and his desire to teach, encourage, protect, and disciple them. 00:37:09.440 --> 00:37:12.800 He is an elder in every sense of the word, indeed. 00:37:12.800 --> 00:37:17.760 John concludes by sending greetings from the children of your elect sister. 00:37:17.760 --> 00:37:31.039 Consistent with what we spoke about up front, about the elect lady, this likely implies that the church John wrote this letter to has a sister church, the elect sister, probably where John was residing. 00:37:31.039 --> 00:37:37.199 And its members, the children, were sending their love in truth to their fellow believers. 00:37:37.199 --> 00:37:43.679 So, as we've discussed from this book of 2 John, there are two main lessons, right? 00:37:43.679 --> 00:37:48.800 Believers must walk obediently, how in truth and love which reinforce each other. 00:37:48.800 --> 00:37:52.239 And second, uh believers are to watch out. 00:37:52.239 --> 00:37:53.280 Watch out for what? 00:37:53.280 --> 00:37:58.320 Obstacles to our faith, faith, namely deceivers and false teachers. 00:37:58.320 --> 00:38:07.119 But what I'd like to leave you with is just a few questions about how we might apply these lessons to our daily lives. 00:38:07.119 --> 00:38:15.199 Um, but I ask all of you to ponder them as you come away from tonight's discussion. 00:38:15.199 --> 00:38:17.519 First question. 00:38:17.519 --> 00:38:22.880 How do we stay in truth and guard ourselves against false teaching? 00:38:22.880 --> 00:38:26.400 How do we stay in truth and guard ourselves from false teaching? 00:38:26.400 --> 00:38:32.079 And as we think about that, think about what it means to abide in God. 00:38:32.079 --> 00:38:35.039 There are a number of verses that speak to that. 00:38:35.039 --> 00:38:46.719 Uh John chapter 15, verses 4 through 7, uh, 1 John chapter 2, verses 24 to 27, and Colossians chapter 2, verses 6 through 8. 00:38:46.719 --> 00:38:53.679 So think about what it means to abide in God as we try to live in truth and avoid false teaching. 00:38:53.679 --> 00:38:55.440 Second question. 00:38:55.440 --> 00:39:00.880 Where do we need to be more intentional in loving others in truth? 00:39:00.880 --> 00:39:12.079 For example, how do we apply John's teaching to interacting with those that we love who may be living a sinful life, or those who are believing false doctrine? 00:39:12.079 --> 00:39:24.320 Third, to what degree may or should we engage with false teachers versus just shunning them completely? 00:39:24.320 --> 00:39:27.599 And what does that look like practically? 00:39:27.599 --> 00:39:46.800 And as we ruminate on that, you know, we should remember um even within kind of the evangelical uh evangelicals, there are differences that um separate some of our biblical and scriptural understanding from other Christ-centered, God-believing churches. 00:39:46.800 --> 00:39:54.400 So there are churches that we would say aren't fundamental, and there are those that we would say are fundamental. 00:39:54.400 --> 00:39:56.079 Where do we draw the line? 00:39:56.079 --> 00:40:02.719 And then how do we think about engaging with teachers who are teaching ones that are in our view fundamentally, in God's view, fundamentally wrong? 00:40:02.719 --> 00:40:16.320 And then finally, what if any restrictions should we place on practicing hospitality towards those in our lives that could potentially pose a threat to all that we have worked for? 00:40:16.320 --> 00:40:27.280 And along with that, how can we take care to show that our associating with them doesn't communicate acceptance of their beliefs? 00:40:28.079 --> 00:40:28.400 Okay. 00:40:29.039 --> 00:40:39.519 So you know, I encourage you to think of all these and applying these lessons uh, you know, in light of the two major themes, very simple themes from tonight, walk obediently and watch out. 00:40:39.519 --> 00:40:43.920 Um and I just thank you for this time we've
