This is not just a book chosen randomly, but that it's a book that follows what we've been looking at for the past several years. 00:00:26.079 --> 00:00:29.920 Four years ago, we started a study on the book of Matthew. 00:00:30.719 --> 00:00:42.000 And as we went through the Gospel of Matthew, we walked with Jesus through his incarnation, through his teaching, through the demonstrations of his compassion and his miraculous power. 00:00:42.320 --> 00:00:46.560 We walked with him through his suffering, his death, and his resurrection. 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:55.039 As we went through the Gospel of Matthew, we saw the servant of God revealed in all of those ways. 00:00:55.359 --> 00:01:00.719 That God's promises were standing before us in flesh and blood, God incarnate. 00:01:02.079 --> 00:01:10.319 After we finished Matthew, we stepped into the book of Isaiah, a book many of us had never ever really explored in depth. 00:01:10.879 --> 00:01:16.879 And there, amidst all of its poetry and prophecy, we saw the Savior promised. 00:01:17.040 --> 00:01:18.719 Not revealed, but promised. 00:01:19.439 --> 00:01:31.200 We listened to God as he spoke to his people in the midst of their confusion, their bewilderment, their disobedience, their fear, their alliances, their idolatry. 00:01:31.439 --> 00:01:37.200 We understood that God was speaking his sovereignty not only over them, but also over the nations. 00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:46.480 And as we went through Isaiah, we also discovered something about the servant, the servant of God who was coming. 00:01:47.200 --> 00:01:51.599 And his identity as we went through Isaiah became clearer and clearer. 00:01:52.079 --> 00:01:56.159 He would be the one who would do what Israel would not and could not do. 00:01:56.560 --> 00:02:01.599 He would be the one who would restore not only his people, but also gather the nations. 00:02:02.239 --> 00:02:06.560 And he would be the one who would save by his suffering. 00:02:06.719 --> 00:02:09.360 And yet his suffering wasn't the end of the story. 00:02:09.599 --> 00:02:13.919 He would be exalted, and so also would be his people. 00:02:14.719 --> 00:02:19.520 So over the past four years, we've seen two aspects of the servant. 00:02:19.759 --> 00:02:26.879 We saw him promised in Isaiah, we saw him revealed in the book of Matthew. 00:02:27.439 --> 00:02:32.000 And now we book turn to the book of Titus, a short pastoral work. 00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:36.159 But in this, we're going to see something about the servant also. 00:02:36.639 --> 00:02:40.639 We're going to see the servant embodied in his people. 00:02:41.120 --> 00:02:59.919 If Matthew shows us the king who came near and Isaiah shows us the servant who is coming to save, Titus shows us what it looks like for a community of people that are formed by the gospel, where the servant embodies them and his life takes root in their lives. 00:03:00.800 --> 00:03:04.800 Titus will show us what grace does when it trains the people. 00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:20.800 It'll show us what the servant's life is like when it's visible in our households, when it's visible in our church life, when it's visible in our workplaces, when it's visible in our friendships, when it's visible in every way we conduct ourselves. 00:03:46.639 --> 00:03:49.599 There were older men and younger men. 00:03:49.840 --> 00:03:52.719 There were older women and younger women. 00:03:53.199 --> 00:03:59.120 There were people who were masters of their households, and others who were servants within their households. 00:03:59.280 --> 00:04:07.360 There were people that had responsibility over jobs, and all of them had a reputation in town. 00:04:08.719 --> 00:04:18.560 And at the center of all of that was one commonality that they and we are people whose lives have been shaped by the gospel. 00:04:19.040 --> 00:04:32.079 That all of us are being trained by grace to be a people zealous for good works and always watchful for the realization of our blessed hope, the coming and appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:04:33.360 --> 00:04:39.759 And just like the church there that Titus was serving, we need to learn some things. 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:45.040 We need to learn, as they did, what the embodiment of our Savior means to us. 00:04:45.600 --> 00:04:51.120 And that when the gospel reigns over his people, it also brings order. 00:04:52.720 --> 00:04:56.240 We are a church that needs to be filled with truth, just like they were. 00:04:57.279 --> 00:05:03.759 We're a church that needs to be anchored by stable and godly leadership, just like they needed to be. 00:05:04.160 --> 00:05:12.399 We need to be a church like they who understand that we who are older have a responsibility to those in the congregation who are younger. 00:05:13.600 --> 00:05:22.319 We need to be a church that understands within our households what the beauty of grace looks like as we conduct ourselves as the people of God. 00:05:23.920 --> 00:05:34.720 We're a church that needs to know that godliness affects our family, godliness affects our work, and godliness will have an influence in our wider society. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.240 Titus will show us all of that. 00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:49.279 As we read the book of Titus together and study it together, I want you to see it as much, much more than just a letter from one church leader to another church leader. 00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:52.240 We call it the past one of the pastoral epistles. 00:05:52.480 --> 00:05:55.439 And sometimes we think, well, I'm not a church leader. 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:59.519 What business do I have to pay attention to this book? 00:06:00.160 --> 00:06:02.959 But it's a letter filled with practical wisdom. 00:06:03.199 --> 00:06:07.600 It's a letter that helps our lives be aligned with the gospel of Christ. 00:06:08.240 --> 00:06:20.240 And so, as Paul brings us into this, as he starts his letter to Titus, he begins with what is the longest introduction in any of the pastoral epistles. 00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:23.759 This is different than how he writes to Timothy. 00:06:25.439 --> 00:06:48.079 And all of this is going to matter, as you'll see, because before Paul talks to Titus about what needs to be done in the church, before he talks about elders, before he talks about households, before he talks about good works, he establishes four verses that lay out for us a framework for how to understand everything that comes in the three chapters of Titus. 00:06:48.480 --> 00:06:50.480 Let's read those four verses together. 00:06:52.480 --> 00:07:08.480 Paul is servant of God and apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness, in the hope of eternal life that God who cannot lie promised before time began. 00:07:08.800 --> 00:07:28.160 In his own time he has revealed his word in the preaching with which I was entrusted, by the command of God our Savior, to Titus, my true son in our common faith, grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus, our Savior. 00:07:29.920 --> 00:07:33.040 This is not how we normally open up our letters. 00:07:33.279 --> 00:07:40.480 Our letters are often filled with just a personal welcome, maybe a hope that you're doing well kind of statement. 00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:50.560 But what we're entering into here is much, much more than just those sort of perfunctory statements or even sincere remarks that we might put at the top of a letter. 00:07:51.199 --> 00:07:57.759 Paul is giving Titus and us a lens through which we are to see everything in this book. 00:07:58.240 --> 00:08:07.439 Every conversation, every appointment of an elder, every correction of false teaching, every moment of order within the household of faith. 00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:12.240 It's all wrapped up in these four verses. 00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:14.240 Why? 00:08:14.879 --> 00:08:16.319 Why does he do this? 00:08:16.959 --> 00:08:26.959 Well, before Titus can be strengthened to lead the church in Crete, he must remember whose representative he is. 00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:32.799 Before the people are going to be formed by the truth, they need to know what that truth is. 00:08:33.840 --> 00:08:42.159 Before they're going to stand firm in the middle of a deceptive culture, they need to be able to rest in a hope that comes from a God who does not lie. 00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:52.159 Before we can live as people who are trained by grace, we need to see how that grace has come through the merciful, loving activity of God our Savior. 00:08:53.120 --> 00:09:03.440 And before we can live together as a church in unity, we need to know what the common bond is of us as God's people. 00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:07.600 So all of this comes in these four verses. 00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:12.799 Paul gives all of us this before he provides us any command. 00:09:13.039 --> 00:09:18.879 He wants us to begin with what God is doing and what God is building. 00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:25.279 So let's look at these four verses as a blueprint, if you will, for what it means to be a faithful church. 00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:27.919 A blueprint for a faithful church. 00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:41.440 And as we go through these, we'll see that the blueprint leads us to understand that a faithful church is one that is formed by God's truth, that is grounded in God's hope, and is shaped by God's gospel. 00:09:41.600 --> 00:09:48.000 Now, those won't be my three points of the message, but they are really going to bleed through all of the points. 00:09:49.120 --> 00:09:54.879 So the first thing that God does in order to build a faithful church is he sends a faithful messenger. 00:09:55.519 --> 00:09:57.519 Take a look at verse 1 in the first part. 00:09:59.440 --> 00:10:05.840 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. 00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:11.840 Paul begins this letter to Titus by telling him who he is. 00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:15.360 Now he doesn't do this to elevate himself. 00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:18.960 Don't you know, Titus, I'm an apostle and you're not? 00:10:20.240 --> 00:10:23.519 But to anchor everything that he's about to say to Titus. 00:10:24.480 --> 00:10:29.840 Because before Titus hears all the instructions he's about to receive, he needs to hear this. 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:36.000 He needs to hear that where the source is of the message that he's about to carry into the life of the body. 00:10:36.639 --> 00:10:44.559 And Paul does that by introducing two titles, two titles that hold a very significant weight. 00:10:45.279 --> 00:10:49.120 He begins by calling himself a servant of God. 00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:06.960 He's actually owned by God, and he is meant to do the bidding of God, that he belongs to God, that he's bound to God, and that he is commissioned by God himself. 00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:21.440 And Paul, by stating this, is putting himself in the line of Moses and Paul or David and men who spoke, the prophets, and even the Lord Jesus himself who took up that servant role. 00:11:22.240 --> 00:11:28.639 He's not operating on his own authority for his own purposes and his own will and his own desires. 00:11:29.039 --> 00:11:33.679 He's serving God in all that he's doing. 00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:42.960 So when Paul writes to Titus, he's not writing as a strategist or he's not writing as some sort of church consultant. 00:11:43.440 --> 00:11:47.279 He's writing as one who belongs to God himself. 00:11:47.840 --> 00:11:51.600 And that comes across in the next title that he offers. 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:57.039 He's not only a servant of God, he's an apostle of Jesus Christ. 00:11:57.279 --> 00:11:59.919 And this is the other side of the identity. 00:12:00.240 --> 00:12:09.919 Paul is not only under God's authority, but he is also commissioned with Christ's authority, as he offers these instructions. 00:12:10.559 --> 00:12:15.519 He is one who is commissioned by the risen Lord Jesus himself. 00:12:16.639 --> 00:12:42.000 And so what he's offering to Titus, and what Titus is to bring into the life of the church, and what we're to receive in this letter that's passed down to us, is that these things are not mere personal preferences, or ministry ideas, or things that are doable because they work, as though simply being functional was the focus. 00:12:42.639 --> 00:12:51.039 What we're receiving is the authoritative directives of God Himself through his appointed means. 00:12:51.759 --> 00:13:04.559 And that would mean a lot for Titus because when Titus comes to Crete and serves this church and serves among this community, he's going to face a mountain of difficulties. 00:13:05.279 --> 00:13:13.039 He is going to face an island that's marked by instability, that's marked by confusion, that's marked by deception. 00:13:14.480 --> 00:13:17.440 He needed something to cut through all of that. 00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:22.559 He's going to face resistance inside and outside the church. 00:13:22.960 --> 00:13:32.320 He's going to have to confront false teachers who are already in there and bar them from coming in if they're on the outside. 00:13:33.200 --> 00:13:41.679 He's going to help to establish order within the households that are there and try to encourage the believers toward godliness. 00:13:42.240 --> 00:13:52.720 And what he needed to know that when he was serving this word, he was doing more than just representing himself and his wishes and desires. 00:13:53.519 --> 00:13:59.039 He was not trying to stamp his influence on the body, but God's Himself. 00:14:12.080 --> 00:14:14.240 Now the church here needed it too. 00:14:14.879 --> 00:14:19.360 They needed to realize that when they listened to Titus, they weren't just listening to him. 00:14:19.919 --> 00:14:28.720 Yes, it had his tone, it had his inflection, it had his vocabulary, it came out of his mouth, and it looked just like him. 00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:32.879 But what it was was actually the very word of God. 00:14:34.799 --> 00:14:39.840 That God was speaking to bring his order to bear in their life. 00:14:41.039 --> 00:14:49.919 So Paul is here giving in these two titles a stabilizing force to a young minister and to a church that needs to be mature. 00:14:52.480 --> 00:14:53.759 And we need it today. 00:14:54.960 --> 00:15:08.159 We need to understand that what we're receiving today as we go through Titus comes from a person who is a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. 00:15:09.200 --> 00:15:13.679 Because we live in a world in which truth is simply personal preference. 00:15:13.919 --> 00:15:19.360 You've got your truth, I've got my truth, none of us have truth, what is truth? 00:15:19.679 --> 00:15:22.799 And we sound like Pontius Pilate all over again. 00:15:23.919 --> 00:15:29.039 And what we need to remember is that this word that's meant to shape us doesn't originate from us. 00:15:31.360 --> 00:15:33.759 This is something that God has given to us. 00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:37.440 And yes, it's going to cut through the shifting winds of our culture. 00:15:38.080 --> 00:15:40.080 It's meant to be counter-cultural. 00:15:41.279 --> 00:15:56.399 And we also need to know that God has given this in order to shape those who are going to be in places of influence among us, that those who lead must be, first of all, servants of God before they carry the authority of Jesus Christ. 00:15:58.639 --> 00:16:08.240 And so this is not only for Titus and the church in Crete and us as a whole, but it's also a message for each of us as believers. 00:16:08.799 --> 00:16:15.440 Because each of us go into this world, and there are two things that we should think about ourselves as we go out. 00:16:16.320 --> 00:16:23.600 I am a servant of God, and I am commissioned by Jesus to be his representative. 00:16:24.159 --> 00:16:31.519 That we are the church embodied, we are the servant embodied in our society. 00:16:32.320 --> 00:16:47.200 And so we go out, not simply saying, This is my faith that I want to introduce you to, this is my lifestyle that I think would be better for you, that we are actually presenting God Himself to this world. 00:16:48.960 --> 00:16:55.600 If you're here this morning or maybe listening later, these opening lines tell us something. 00:16:56.159 --> 00:17:07.680 They tell us God is not silent, that he speaks into our day, and that he speaks into our day through a message that he gives people just like us. 00:17:08.720 --> 00:17:12.160 And that he has sent us a wonderful word. 00:17:12.400 --> 00:17:18.559 It's called the gospel, which means good news, that he sent us Jesus Christ into this world. 00:17:18.640 --> 00:17:25.599 And we'll talk more about him, but we need to know that this message is not just a message among messages in this world. 00:17:25.920 --> 00:17:29.680 This is God's word messengers, but he forms a faithful church through the truth. 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:42.720 Through the truth. 00:17:42.880 --> 00:17:45.359 Take a look at verse 1 and the second part of it. 00:17:47.119 --> 00:17:57.839 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness. 00:17:58.079 --> 00:18:08.799 Now, Paul has just identified himself as a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, but now in this second part he tells us why he serves and why he's been sent. 00:18:09.759 --> 00:18:20.160 His ministry exists for this purpose, and Titus' ministry exists for this purpose, and all who minister the word, their ministry exists for this purpose. 00:18:20.720 --> 00:18:29.200 For the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness. 00:18:30.160 --> 00:18:33.680 That's why we have ministers of the gospel. 00:18:34.480 --> 00:18:39.839 Because God is affecting through that ministry two key things. 00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:45.119 First of all, it is meant to bring about the faith of God's elect. 00:18:46.960 --> 00:18:52.480 Faith, contrary to the way we talk about it in our generation, is not some vague spirituality. 00:18:53.119 --> 00:18:55.759 It's not some general belief about God. 00:18:55.920 --> 00:18:58.720 It is not a personal ideal. upon Jesus Christ as the only Lord and Savior. 00:19:14.480 --> 00:19:20.559 And a reception of his promises, of the forgiveness of sins and the hope of eternal life. 00:19:22.000 --> 00:19:30.160 The receiving of God's love and mercy so that we are no longer condemned but children. 00:19:31.279 --> 00:19:47.440 Titus is to remember that when he serves the word, when he offers them these truths, that he's serving among a body that is chosen and called and brought to God for himself. 00:19:48.640 --> 00:20:04.880 These are not simply people to leverage for his purposes or to stand over as if he could exercise his authority in order to gain some influence, not only among them, but among a wider populace. 00:20:05.680 --> 00:20:12.799 He is actually representing God, he is bringing God's goes on to tell us in this second part that the faith of God's elect comes through their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness. 00:21:01.920 --> 00:21:05.200 Now, this is one of the most important phrases in the whole letter. 00:21:06.240 --> 00:21:15.279 If you wanted to get one phrase, if you will, that would stamp the identity of the whole book of Titus, it would be this phrase something that a lot of us forget is that truth and godliness are inseparable. 00:21:30.799 --> 00:21:32.000 Inseparable. 00:21:34.160 --> 00:21:42.799 Truth that is merely known but not lived is not truth in a biblical sense. 00:21:43.359 --> 00:21:49.039 And godliness that is not rooted in truth is no godliness at all. 00:21:52.799 --> 00:21:58.079 This pairing of truth and godliness is the backbone of Titus. 00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:02.400 It explains why elders must hold the sound doctrine. 00:22:03.119 --> 00:22:06.240 It explains why false teachers are so dangerous. 00:22:06.480 --> 00:22:16.319 It explains why older believers, men and women, have responsibility toward the younger to train them up in specific ways. 00:22:17.200 --> 00:22:20.480 It explains to us why godliness in our homes matters. 00:22:21.119 --> 00:22:25.920 And it explains why good works in every sphere of life is essential. 00:22:27.440 --> 00:22:28.079 Why? 00:22:28.720 --> 00:22:32.000 Because God forms his people through truth. 00:22:32.640 --> 00:22:49.119 A truth that is meant and does, if it's received, shape their character, changes their speech, revises their habits, forms their relationships, society where deception was normative, where moral boundaries were fluid, and where religious ideas were mixed and confused. 00:23:07.440 --> 00:23:08.559 Does that sound like us? 00:23:09.440 --> 00:23:10.559 It does, doesn't it? 00:23:11.759 --> 00:23:20.640 We live in the same kind of culture where deception, where fluidity of morals, where religious ideas are just simply opinions. 00:23:21.359 --> 00:23:23.599 They needed to cut through all of that. 00:23:24.240 --> 00:23:25.599 What did that church need? 00:23:25.759 --> 00:23:28.000 They needed an anchor of truth. 00:23:28.240 --> 00:23:36.480 And they needed an anchor of truth that was going to affect their life so that they could live distinctly the middle of that society. 00:23:38.000 --> 00:23:43.359 They needed a truth that was going to confront them before they confronted anybody else. 00:23:43.839 --> 00:23:51.680 They needed the truth that was going to produce with them a distinctly Christian life before they called others to a different kind of lifestyle themselves. 00:23:53.599 --> 00:23:54.880 We need this. 00:23:55.599 --> 00:24:04.640 Sadly, our world thinks that truth is just a personal preference, that feelings are something that are actually more important than scripture itself. 00:24:05.200 --> 00:24:12.000 And where godliness is just reduced to being, you know, a nice person or a sincere person. 00:24:13.119 --> 00:24:16.480 Sometimes godliness looks rather rough and rugged. 00:24:17.599 --> 00:24:23.680 But we need to know that that truth and that godliness are in that moment to be displayed that way. 00:24:25.519 --> 00:24:35.359 And so what this is telling us is that our discipleship is not simply information, it's actually about transformation. 00:24:36.000 --> 00:25:04.640 And so we can live a life that reflects His character. 00:25:06.720 --> 00:25:19.200 And so as we go through this, we need to be constantly submitting ourselves to this truth that leads to godliness, to be shaped by it. 00:25:19.599 --> 00:25:38.880 And so it's my responsibility and all who stand behind this pulpit to make sure that that truth is uttered clearly, that it's uttered firmly, and that it's lived visibly, so that you have not only the sound of it and the understanding of it, but you also have the model of it. 00:25:39.119 --> 00:25:41.599 So you know how you can conduct yourself. 00:25:43.279 --> 00:26:03.279 If you're not a follower of Jesus Christ yet, these words speak to you as well, because this is a message about people that God has called into relationship with himself, not based upon any works of righteousness that they have done, but as we'll see in Titus, according to his wondrous mercy. 00:26:03.519 --> 00:26:19.279 And this message of truth that leads to godliness, even though godliness might seem the furthest thing from your life right now, is something God has already acted and enacted in every person here who's a member of New 00:26:45.759 He forms his people through the truth, but he also grounds them in eternal hope. 00:26:46.319 --> 00:26:47.440 Look at verse 2. 00:26:49.200 --> 00:26:58.799 In the hope of eternal life that God, who cannot lie, promised before time began. 00:27:00.720 --> 00:27:11.200 Paul, who identified himself by titles, Paul, who talks about the why of his ministry, has spoken about faith and these four verses. 00:35:15.840 --> 00:35:32.159 Paul establishes a faithful church by, first of all, sending faithful messengers, by forming people through the truth, by grounding them in eternal hope, but also through the revelation of his saving word in verse 3. 00:35:33.440 --> 00:35:45.039 In his own time, that's God, he has revealed his word in the preaching with which I was entrusted by the command of God our Savior. 00:35:46.719 --> 00:35:55.360 He says that God has chosen the opportune moment in which this word would be revealed, and done so in his own time. 00:35:58.639 --> 00:36:16.559 But what it tells us is that God is never hurried and God is never reactive, that he goes about doing his plan according to his divine purposes and counsel, apart from circumstances and 00:37:18.960 The very simple fact that there is one person who has received and embodied the truth, expressing it to another person, so that they might hear that message and find it taking root and time and time again. 00:37:32.480 --> 00:37:52.719 Because it's so easy to think, well, perhaps God needs our ingenuity, or perhaps God needs our our cle cleverness, or perhaps God needs us to have a certain atmosphere that will make everybody feel like they're part of something large and glorious. 00:38:00.000 --> 00:38:28.719 It doesn't come through human speculation, it doesn't come through mystical experience, it doesn't come through human discovery, it doesn't come through ecstatic emotional experiences, it comes through preaching, it comes through the clear, authoritative declaration that this is what God is doing in Christ. 00:38:31.119 --> 00:38:36.719 And Paul says here that this preaching was something that he was entrusted with. 00:38:38.880 --> 00:38:42.320 That word entrusted carries the idea of stewardship. 00:38:44.639 --> 00:38:48.719 Paul was saying here in this phrase that he didn't invent this message. 00:38:49.840 --> 00:38:58.960 He's not going to modify it, he's not going to soften it, he received it, and it's his responsibility to carry it and to deliver it as it was given to him. 00:38:59.280 --> 00:39:00.960 It was entrusted to him. 00:39:03.920 not good advice. 00:39:21.440 --> 00:39:36.000 The gospel is something divinely commissioned by God Himself in order to enact his purposes in time and space in order to deliver people from their eternal damnation and to grant them the hope of eternal life. 00:39:39.039 --> 00:40:04.719 And so, in the middle of a place where Titus was, with all of the voices that were trying to command attention, false teachers and cultural influencers and religious speculators, Titus needed to know that the message that God was going to bless was the simple, glorious statement of Christ as Savior and Lord. 00:40:05.360 --> 00:40:13.920 That through the death of Christ and the resurrection of Christ, people can be transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. 00:40:15.519 --> 00:40:17.360 And we need that today. 00:40:18.480 --> 00:40:28.079 We need to understand that the gospel is not going to be bettered by our innovation, it's the very word of God that is revealed a day with all the voices that are speaking, people that are speaking in podcasts and on video logs, influencers, commentators, experts, entertainers, and they're all loud because they want to they we shouldn't be a people that are trying to build a number through an emotional pull or through music designed to stir the feelings. 00:41:41.199 --> 00:41:48.480 That we are not to build services 00:43:55.519 God forms a faithful church by sending faithful messengers, by forming a godly people through the truth, by grounding them in eternal hope, by revealing his saving word, but last of all and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. 00:44:10.639 --> 00:44:15.440 And Paul ends his introduction with a very deep and personal line, right? 00:44:15.599 --> 00:44:18.400 It's such a beautiful statement of their relationship. 00:44:18.719 --> 00:44:23.840 Titus, my my true son in our common faith. 00:44:24.480 --> 00:44:25.760 I love that. 00:44:26.800 --> 00:44:29.360 It's a tender, tender phrase. 00:44:30.159 --> 00:44:32.400 But it's also a very rich one. 00:44:33.360 --> 00:44:42.159 Because Paul is not just expressing his affection for Titus, he's identifying the bond that holds the two of them together. 00:44:44.079 --> 00:44:47.280 You see, Titus was not Paul's biological son. 00:44:49.440 --> 00:44:52.559 He was someone he got to know when he was an adult. 00:44:54.480 --> 00:44:56.639 But he was a son of the faith. 00:44:57.920 --> 00:45:10.079 He was one who had been brought to Christ, one who had trained to walk with Christ, and one who was shaped by Christ, with the influences of Paul in all of those places. 00:45:10.719 --> 00:45:16.800 And now he's put into a service of strengthening churches on the island of Crete. 00:45:18.000 --> 00:45:27.519 And what this phrase teaches us is not just how affectionate the gospel is, but just how unifying the gospel is for us. 00:45:28.400 --> 00:45:36.719 Because it shows us that our relationship is created in a whole new way by being a member of a spiritual family. 00:45:38.480 --> 00:45:43.440 You see, the church is not held together by the unity of our ethnicity. 00:45:44.239 together in this, the common faith. 00:46:37.840 --> 00:47:12.480 And so when you tell older men to talk to younger ones, and you tell older women to speak and to example and give an example to the younger women, when you shape those who are going to be in places of leadership, when you talk against those who are trying to bring deception and false teaching into the life of the church, remember that you're talking about people who have a bond together, not because of their age gradation or their leadership capacities, but of their common faith. 00:47:12.800 --> 00:47:14.079 Their common faith. 00:47:22.000 --> 00:47:23.760 That's what binds us together. 00:47:25.280 --> 00:47:35.360 And Paul reinforces that with these closing words grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus 00:48:12.480 We live in a world that is fractured by differences, a world that is fractured by political divides, cultural uh enclaves, generational aspects, and economic ladder. 00:48:12.639 --> 00:48:15.920 It is separated in so many different ways. 00:48:16.960 --> 00:48:29.760 And it's easy, even within the church, to let those things drift into the places of influence, to drift into camps and preferences, into factions and alliances and parties. 00:48:31.039 --> 00:48:39.599 Paul wants to remind us here that we are people who have simply received grace and have wondrously been granted the peace of God. 00:48:40.800 --> 00:48:51.760 And that we share the same savior, that we live because of the same hope, that we've been brought to the life through the same truth, that we're experiences of the same grace. 00:48:52.239 --> 00:48:58.800 Our unity is not sentimental, it is doctrinal and rooted in the gospel. 00:49:00.400 --> 00:49:17.599 And so the church here, to be a faithful church, must be a place where all of our relationships are shaped by that grace, where all of our differences are held together with humility because none of us deserve to be saved by a holy God. 00:49:18.559 --> 00:49:39.519 Where older believers invest in younger ones, and younger ones are eager to hear the older ones, to learn, where households are strengthened by gospel order, and where the gospel creates a family that would never exist the way it does on earth, apart from his work and his redemption. 00:49:40.880 --> 00:49:54.559 And so we gather not as consumers, but as brothers and sisters, and we can join together in protecting this unity because it's one produced by God Himself. 00:49:55.119 --> 00:50:11.280 So let's just sort of back up from Titus for just a second and see in these first four verses that blueprint that lays out for us the whole letter itself of what it means to be a faithful church. 00:50:11.599 --> 00:50:28.559 Because in these few verses, God is showing us who we are, he's showing us what God has done for us, he shows us what God is building among us, and he shows us where he's bringing us, and he shows us how to be faithful
