California, tucked in between the hills of a city I lived in, Santa Clarita, stood in the 1920s a dam called the St. 00:00:48.640 --> 00:00:50.000 Francis Dam. 00:00:50.479 --> 00:01:02.960 It was a massive concrete structure holding back billions of gallons of water in order to bring sun-soaked and parked Los Angeles needed water. 00:01:03.200 --> 00:01:06.239 And on the paper, it was an engineering marvel. 00:01:06.560 --> 00:01:08.000 But there was only one problem. 00:01:08.959 --> 00:01:10.799 The foundation was wrong. 00:01:11.599 --> 00:01:19.280 The dam was anchored into unstable rock that, when you looked at it, looked very solid, but there were a lot of things wrong with it. 00:01:19.359 --> 00:01:20.879 They shifted under pressure. 00:01:22.159 --> 00:01:26.719 And so, shortly after the dam was built, cracks began to appear. 00:01:27.200 --> 00:01:42.640 Warnings were raised about its instability, and those that were in charge of that engineering did everything that they could to reinforce it, to patch it, to adjust what they needed to do to make it stable, but they never dealt with the underlying problem. 00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:45.920 The foundation was flawed. 00:01:46.640 --> 00:01:53.359 And on the night of March 12th, in 1928, that dam broke suddenly. 00:01:53.760 --> 00:02:02.640 And as all of those gallons of water rushed like a wall 60 miles to the ocean, it left devastation in its wake. 00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:10.080 Small communities were absolutely wiped off the map, and over 400 people died that night. 00:02:17.199 --> 00:02:24.080 Not because there was a great storm or an earthquake, but because a dam was built on a bad foundation. 00:02:32.800 --> 00:02:36.159 And I've cycled past some of the rubble of that St. 00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:37.439 Francis Dam. 00:02:38.080 --> 00:02:49.280 And as you go into that valley, it's peaceful, it's beautiful, it's serene, it's quiet, away from all the noise of Los Angeles. 00:02:49.599 --> 00:02:57.439 But when you know the story of what happened in that valley, you feel somber. 00:02:58.639 --> 00:03:05.199 You look at the rubble and you see what was once what appeared to be a very stable and solid dam. 00:03:06.319 --> 00:03:10.479 Nothing but elements of tragedy and death and destruction. 00:03:19.919 --> 00:03:26.960 And he's writing to Titus and sent him to the island of Crete in order to do something. 00:03:27.759 --> 00:03:31.280 Something very important, vital, foundational. 00:03:32.240 --> 00:03:36.240 He's leaving Titus in Crete to set things in order. 00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:38.560 And this is our third week in this book. 00:03:38.719 --> 00:03:43.840 And I want us to look at verse 5 as he gives direct statements to him. 00:03:43.919 --> 00:03:48.560 He's asking Titus to set things in order to make sure a foundation is put right. 00:03:49.439 --> 00:03:56.800 The reason I left you in Crete was to set right what was left undone, and as I directed you to appoint elders in every town. 00:03:57.120 --> 00:04:05.280 One of the most critical parts of this foundation that Paul is telling Titus to lay is the appointment of church leadership called elders here. 00:04:05.919 --> 00:04:10.479 And Paul knew what it was like for a church not to have the right men in place. 00:04:10.960 --> 00:04:19.920 He sends Timothy over to Ephesus in order to take care of a situation there where the wrong men had been put into church leadership. 00:04:20.079 --> 00:04:27.920 And all of the trouble that they experienced in Ephesus, Paul wants to save the people here through Titus from. 00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:35.360 He doesn't want the churches in Crete to face all of the trouble that Ephesus had experienced. 00:04:35.600 --> 00:04:43.279 He wants these young churches to start well and to grow well and to be strong and mature in a way that honors Christ. 00:04:43.519 --> 00:04:48.560 And so he sets in place, as part of this foundation, Christ-shaped men. 00:04:49.439 --> 00:05:03.920 Men that will help the church to have a firm foundation upon which to grow, a character that will strengthen them, and a presence that will help them to be godly, healthy, stable, and even beautiful. 00:05:05.040 --> 00:05:14.639 Last week we looked at part of this, we looked at the cracks that can appear in a person's life that disqualify them from shepherding God's people. 00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:20.399 And this week we're going to look at the more positive elements that are in this passage of scripture. 00:05:20.959 --> 00:05:31.279 So as we look into Titus 1 again, I want us to reflect just for a moment on what we saw last week and then move into what we're going to look at more fully in just a moment. 00:05:31.439 --> 00:05:35.439 So look at verse 7 with me and see the contrast that Paul draws here. 00:05:37.839 --> 00:05:44.319 He says in verse 6, an elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife, with faithful children, not accused of wildness of rebellion. 00:05:44.480 --> 00:05:49.360 And then in verse 7, as an overseer of God's household, he must be blameless. 00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:57.199 Not arrogant, not hot-tempered, not an excessive drinker, not a bully, not greedy for money. 00:05:58.160 --> 00:06:05.360 So he lays out for these things that can be detrimental not only to the person's life, but to the rest of the people of God. 00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:29.199 A man who lacks self-control, not just with drink, but in other appetites erodes his credibility and clouds his judgment. 00:06:30.079 --> 00:06:39.040 We saw how a man who is domineering in his attitude toward others is going to be someone who wounds rather than protects the flock. 00:06:39.920 --> 00:06:48.160 We saw how a love of money can distort ministry into something done for personal gain rather than something done out of love and sacrifice. 00:06:49.120 --> 00:07:01.680 Paul lays down these patterns plainly because he understands the cost of what it would mean to take someone with these things in their life that are patterned by these behaviors and what kind of destructive force they would have among God's people. 00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:08.160 And so he's telling Titus, be cautious, be aware of who you're looking at. 00:07:09.120 --> 00:07:14.319 Because if you don't, people are going to be wounded and hurt. 00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:17.519 The vulnerable are going to be taken advantage of. 00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:26.560 And the witness of the gospel is going to be overshadowed by the trouble that is rising up within the church, and the name of Christ will be besmirched in the community. 00:07:27.920 --> 00:07:36.879 So, in order to safeguard the church, he tells Titus what should not be in the life of a potential leader. 00:07:37.519 --> 00:07:45.920 But in verse 8, he wants us to move beyond that sort of cleared path to show what ought to be patterns in a behavior. 00:07:46.639 --> 00:07:51.519 And so he makes a deliberate turn in the passage in order to move toward those things. 00:07:51.759 --> 00:08:04.639 Because he wants the church not just to know what not to look for, but what actually to move toward, to see the true portrait of a man whose life is built by Christ Himself. 00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:10.240 And so he lays out this positive vision, the kind of life that reflects the heart of Christ. 00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:22.000 He wants the church to see the beauty of what Christ can do in their own hearts as well as in their leaders, and to recognize the aroma of Christ as it grows among the whole church. 00:08:22.319 --> 00:08:27.120 So let's look at verse 8 and see the character that Paul describes. 00:08:27.519 --> 00:08:47.840 And I want us to see it as a composite picture, not just six elements standing on their own, not just a list of virtues that we can pick apart one at a time, though we want to examine them one at a time, but we want to see them as six shades of color that build a portrait of a man whose life has been shaped by Christ. 00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:54.000 The first one is this hospitable in verse 8. 00:08:54.799 --> 00:08:56.000 Hospitable. 00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:15.039 Though that's probably included, but a lover of strangers. 00:09:15.279 --> 00:09:16.720 It's an interesting term. 00:09:17.600 --> 00:09:22.399 We see this all the way in the book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, Genesis chapter 18. 00:09:22.559 --> 00:09:24.080 Abraham meets three men. 00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:27.600 He doesn't know who they are, but he welcomes them in. 00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:30.240 He sees that they are hungry. 00:09:30.480 --> 00:09:43.440 And so he rushes about, and with generosity and with care and warmth and urgency, he goes about taking care of their need and welcomes them into his presence. 00:09:44.559 --> 00:09:47.600 He is a lover of strangers. 00:09:49.200 --> 00:09:56.799 In Hebrews chapter 13 and verse 2, the church is told to show hospitality to strangers. 00:10:00.960 --> 00:10:15.759 Royal and I yesterday were looking at uh hotels in London to spend some time in, perhaps around Christmas, when we see our two sons and their families, and knowing that they live in small places and all getting together, it might be best for Royal and I to get a hotel room. 00:10:15.840 --> 00:10:24.240 So we're just looking at prices and places that are close to where one of my sons lives, not thinking anything other than let's get a room. 00:10:25.679 --> 00:10:31.039 But in the day of the New Testament, inns were not those kind of places. 00:10:31.679 --> 00:10:35.039 They were places where trouble could happen. 00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:57.360 And so Christians, as they moved from place to place within the Roman world, they would take care of one another and they would open up their homes and give them food and lodging and provide for their needs and perhaps even help them along their way to get further down the road if they had somewhere to go. 00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:13.360 And so the church is told to have that sense of openness and welcome, to care for the needs of others, to see them as they are, not without discernment, but with love and attention. 00:11:14.320 --> 00:11:18.960 And so Paul here is describing hospitality. 00:11:19.440 --> 00:11:27.600 He's not talking about, you know, uh an elder and his wife having a house open and having dinner parties every week. 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:38.080 He's not even talking necessarily about having a room in the house that is laid out for a guest and keeping that as a sacred spot. 00:11:38.720 --> 00:11:43.919 He's really describing the totality of a person's attitude in this word hospitality. 00:11:44.720 --> 00:11:51.200 Someone who's open, welcoming, attentive to the needs of others. 00:11:53.120 --> 00:12:03.200 A person might be quiet, they may not have many people into their home, but they'll spend time in the pew with someone that they see has a need. 00:12:03.440 --> 00:12:13.360 Or they'll have a conversation aside with another one when they discover that there's a there's a way that that person needs their input. 00:12:14.639 --> 00:12:28.720 Hospitable elder is a man who perhaps would notice a new couple coming in, and instead of just sort of circling around the old friends, would say, I'd like to go meet that person and find out why they're here and how I can make them feel welcome. 00:12:31.200 --> 00:12:33.759 In short, a hospitable elder is approachable. 00:12:35.200 --> 00:12:43.120 He is a place of welcome, he makes room in his life for others, particularly in their needs. 00:12:43.759 --> 00:12:46.960 Now, this is not just something that the elders are meant to have. 00:12:47.120 --> 00:12:57.519 These are meant to be a composite picture of all believers as they grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, which means all of us are meant to take on this idea. 00:12:57.919 --> 00:13:06.480 And it might mean having a shared meal with someone in our fellowship lunch and sitting down and saying, let's learn to know one another better. 00:13:06.639 --> 00:13:09.039 And it might mean opening up your home. 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:18.480 But at the core of it all is this sense of care and welcome and attention to people in their need. 00:13:19.200 --> 00:13:21.600 Let's go dig a little deeper in this. 00:13:21.759 --> 00:13:33.600 The second one, not just a lover of strangers, but secondly, as it tells us here in verse 8, tells us a lover of what is good. 00:13:34.639 --> 00:13:37.120 A lover of what is good. 00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:54.399 Now, this is a person who is not just living according to principle, but a person whose heart is drawn to what is good, whose instincts move to what is noble, to what is wholesome, to what is life-giving. 00:13:55.279 --> 00:14:03.039 This is a man whose life is not marked by cynicism or the sensational or the controversial. 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:10.480 This is not a guy who's going to spend 20 hours a day digging into conspiracy theories on Twitter. 00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:14.000 This is a man who's a lover of good. 00:14:15.600 --> 00:14:18.960 He delights in those things that reflect the character of God. 00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:28.799 His affections have been shaped by grace so much that he moves to the places that display God Himself. 00:14:35.679 --> 00:14:38.960 So we see this lover of good is sourced in God Himself. 00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:44.080 And in Acts chapter 11, we're giving a great example of that in the person of Barnabas. 00:14:44.879 --> 00:14:47.120 Luke describes Barnabas in this way. 00:14:47.519 --> 00:14:51.919 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. 00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:53.279 That's a great description. 00:14:53.679 --> 00:14:56.639 Wouldn't that be wonderful if someone could say that about you? 00:14:56.960 --> 00:15:01.919 A good person, full of God's Spirit and of faith. 00:15:03.840 --> 00:15:05.279 How did he show that? 00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:17.120 Well, when Saul, who was at those early days a persecutor of the church, came into the conversion and owned Christ as Lord and Savior. 00:15:17.279 --> 00:15:20.159 And he comes into the church, and the rest of the church is wary. 00:15:20.320 --> 00:15:21.360 Who is this guy? 00:15:21.600 --> 00:15:22.639 Why is he here? 00:15:22.879 --> 00:15:24.159 What is he going to do? 00:15:24.320 --> 00:15:28.960 Has he come to understand more about us so he can separate us and destroy us? 00:15:29.200 --> 00:15:46.639 Barnabas sits down with him, finds out the reality of his faith, and takes him in and encourages him and encourages the body of Christ to receive this person who was once an enemy of the gospel, but is now a servant of the gospel. 00:15:47.360 --> 00:15:49.120 He's a lover of what is good. 00:15:49.600 --> 00:15:51.840 He delights in what God delights in. have been shaped by the goodness of God, who gravitates toward things that build up rather than tear down. 00:16:08.320 --> 00:16:15.279 Someone who notices the evidences of grace in a person's life and moves toward it with words of encouragement. 00:16:15.600 --> 00:16:29.440 Who takes aside a believer in the congregation, not to chide them, not to correct them, but simply to say, I watched you as God's people, who speak well of others, who gravitate toward areas of God's goodness and grace, that don't start our conversations with our frustrations, but rather look for ways to support and to strengthen the good. 00:17:02.159 --> 00:17:11.599 A church that's filled with that kind of love of good is not only going to declare the gospel, it's going to display the gospel. 00:17:12.480 --> 00:17:15.200 Now let's move a little further on. 00:17:16.160 --> 00:17:17.119 Sensible. 00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:19.920 Sensible, it says in verse 8. 00:17:21.519 --> 00:17:28.640 This word speaks of sound judgment, it speaks of discernment, it speaks of a disciplined mind. 00:17:29.200 --> 00:17:33.119 It speaks of a steadiness of thought. 00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:38.799 It describes a person who's not impulsive or reactionary. 00:17:39.440 --> 00:17:50.400 It describes a person who has the ability to think clearly about an issue and to think carefully through difficulties, who responds with wisdom rather than reaction. 00:17:51.279 --> 00:17:56.880 Someone whose inner life is ordered, whose emotions and desires are not in charge. 00:17:59.039 --> 00:18:12.480 1 Peter 4 7, believers are told to be self-controlled and sober-minded, so that they can pray and live faithfully in a world that's full of distractions and pressures and opposition. 00:18:14.079 --> 00:18:18.960 And this is what Paul says is requisite in an elder's life. 00:18:19.279 --> 00:18:23.519 Because a sensible elder is not going to be someone who's easily provoked. 00:18:23.839 --> 00:18:26.720 He's not someone speaks, who weighs matters, whose emotions don't dictate his actions, who has a steadiness about him that becomes a refuge and a safe place for others within the body of Christ. 00:18:51.599 --> 00:18:57.279 And so an elder has to deal with a difficult situation or perhaps even a personal confrontation. 00:18:57.519 --> 00:19:09.279 It's going to be a person who takes a deep breath, who says, disciplines their time so they can spend more of that time doing something beneficial and helpful. 00:19:52.880 --> 00:20:00.079 Or someone who resists the pull of distractions, whose emotions aren't use righteous in a lot of different ways. 00:20:15.440 --> 00:20:19.759 We could say, that's righteous, and say something commendatory. 00:20:19.920 --> 00:20:26.720 Or we could say, Oh, you're righteous, and say something blameworthy about someone, as though they're too high and mighty. 00:20:26.960 --> 00:20:35.279 But the word of God talks about righteous as someone whose lives are marked by justice and fairness and even uprightness. 00:20:36.000 --> 00:20:41.599 This is a person who treats others rightly because they live under the righteous rule of God. 00:20:42.000 --> 00:20:49.920 This is a life that lives out among others the kind of things that they've learned about God Himself. 00:20:51.519 --> 00:21:04.160 Someone who's not guided by personal advantage, shifting emotions and the pressures of the moment, but wants to live a life of integrity in all the situations that they encounter. 00:21:05.119 --> 00:21:17.920 Psalm 15, this is something I gave to my sons when they were young, is that a person walks blamelessly and does what is right and makes a promise even to their own hurt. 00:21:19.279 --> 00:21:27.119 This is a person who trusts from the heart, and when they say something, they mean it, even if it's going to cost them. 00:21:28.960 --> 00:21:44.160 Micah 6:8 says that God's people are to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God, showing us that righteousness is not just personal morality, but it is how we treat those around us. 00:21:46.160 --> 00:21:53.839 In the book of Ruth, Boaz was a person who looked at Ruth and her situation, and he realized he was a near redeemer of hers. 00:21:54.000 --> 00:21:59.759 And I can't tell you the whole story, but his interaction with her was marked by fairness, transparency. 00:22:00.799 --> 00:22:02.319 Honor and care. 00:22:02.960 --> 00:22:14.319 And he didn't cut corners, and he weighed out the matter and the circumstances, and at personal cost stepped into providing for her need. 00:22:16.000 --> 00:22:33.759 This is what it means for a man to be righteous, to be trustworthy, to treat people fairly, to make decisions that are based upon God's word and God's wisdom, whose integrity builds a stability among the church. 00:22:36.799 --> 00:22:50.480 An upright man is a man who, when he faces a personal situation that's difficult, doesn't just gravitate to the easy answer and doesn't just give favor to someone who might be a familiar friend. 00:22:51.359 --> 00:22:55.839 It might have to say something strong to someone who's very, very close to him Holy. 00:23:08.400 --> 00:23:13.440 This word talks about devotion, talks about purity, talks about reverence. 00:23:14.079 --> 00:23:19.359 It talks about not just a withdrawal from things that are sinful, but a dedication to those things that are sacred. 00:23:20.319 --> 00:23:29.519 It describes a life that's oriented toward God, not just away from sin, shaped by God's presence and marked by God's priorities. 00:23:30.799 --> 00:23:39.759 1 Peter 1, all of us in 1 15 are told to be holy in all our conduct because God Himself is holy. 00:23:41.279 --> 00:23:50.240 A holy person is not a sinless person or a perfect person, but it is a devoted person. 00:23:50.960 --> 00:23:54.319 A person whose life has direction toward God. 00:23:56.640 --> 00:24:00.160 And this is the portrait that Paul is painting of church leadership. 00:24:01.119 --> 00:24:05.359 An elder is not a divided, double-minded man. 00:24:06.000 --> 00:24:11.759 He doesn't have a private life and a public life that are not integrated. 00:24:12.880 --> 00:24:24.799 He guards his mind, he guards his habits, he guards his affections, because he knows that holiness builds over the long term in all the little choices that are made in life. 00:24:25.920 --> 00:24:37.440 His life, as you see it, has a weightiness and a gravity to it because it's impressive, because you see an integration of life in every aspect. to guard his own soul because he needs to be in a position where he can help to guard others. 00:24:57.279 --> 00:25:04.880 Who's not dramatic but consistent, who's credible, and his life has depth. community because holiness and devotion to God and movement toward God and his person builds a body of people that live a life that's not only good and holy, but pleasing and beautiful. 00:26:03.119
