section of the life of Jesus that we call the Passion Week, the last week of Christ's earthly ministry that starts with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem and ends with his resurrection from the dead. 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:14.319 We center in on Matthew chapter 23, which is wholly taken by Jesus talking about the failures of the religious establishment in Jerusalem during his day. 00:01:14.640 --> 00:01:17.120 It can be broken down into two sections. 00:01:17.359 --> 00:01:25.840 The first section, verses 1 to 12, talk to us about Jesus speaking to the crowds about the religious establishment. 00:01:26.079 --> 00:01:35.280 And then in verses 13 through the end of the chapter, Jesus speaks to that religious establishment through a series of woes. 00:01:36.079 --> 00:01:42.560 It'd be easy for us to listen to this chapter and feel removed from it. 00:01:43.439 --> 00:02:05.760 These are people that we will never have met in a time that we never can go back to, in a place that many of us will never visit, and to speak of forms of religious activity that most of us are probably unfamiliar with, a religious system that's outside of our knowledge. 00:02:06.799 --> 00:02:12.560 We may feel a world away from this chapter, but it has much to say to us. 00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:26.240 When Jesus speaks to the crowds about the Pharisees, and when Jesus speaks to the Pharisees, he is calling us to a period of self-examination, of religious hypocrisy. 00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:46.000 These things that he warns about and casts woes upon are issues of the human heart that all of us can be tempted with, that every single one of us might drift this direction and find our lives caught up in the things that Jesus denounces. 00:02:46.319 --> 00:03:31.680 And so when Jesus speaks to the crowd about the Pharisees and their hypocrisy of the inconsistency of their life and their lips, as he speaks about them heaping religious burdens upon people without so much as lifting a finger to help, when he talks about their hungering for recognition as they love, honor, and applause, the Lord is teaching us that those temptations are not to be found among his people, that those kind of activities are meant to be completely cast aside and replaced with sincerity of worship and helpfulness of hand and heart, devoted to God's praise and not our own. 00:03:32.639 --> 00:03:40.639 Place where God's people prioritize humility and service rather than position and power. 00:03:43.520 --> 00:03:48.639 Last time we were here, we started in on the seven woes that Jesus gives. 00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:53.280 There's seven throughout the rest of the chapter, once we get from verse 13 onward. 00:03:53.759 --> 00:03:59.759 And we said the last time that a woe was a mix of a compassion and condemnation. 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:09.759 And it's hard for us to understand that because our world today is either filled with compassion or condemnation. 00:04:10.159 --> 00:04:13.199 And we don't easily mix the two. 00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:19.680 But Jesus is able and does very much so pull the two of these together. 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:29.439 You can feel the compassion in these woes, and you can feel the condemnation in these woes. 00:04:29.839 --> 00:04:42.240 He bewails this miserable condition of the religious establishment, and yet at the same time pronounces their fate if they continue down that pathway. 00:04:42.800 --> 00:04:57.279 These woes are meant to be invitations to repentance, to seeking out a new way of life, to realize the dangers of continuing down a road to destruction. 00:04:58.639 --> 00:05:14.639 As we listen to these indictments, as we hear the compassion of our Savior, may it also be for us a halting warning sign if we continue to progress down the same road that these religious leaders were going down. 00:05:15.920 --> 00:05:27.439 May it be for us a time for self-examination, an exhortation against the sins that might gravitate in our hearts to overwhelm our life. 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:37.839 And may we also find in this positive encouragement to walk with our Savior and to realize that his kingdom is not like the powers of this world. 00:05:38.399 --> 00:05:50.639 We looked at the first four woes three weeks ago, and I just want to sort of highlight those and move deeper into the passage, and we'll get ourselves to the end of the chapter before we close off. 00:05:51.439 --> 00:06:02.240 The first woe that Jesus offers is found in verse 13, where he declares the woe to the scribes and Pharisees of shutting the door to God's rule. 00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:24.639 The religious leaders there assert their right to speak authoritatively about God, but Jesus says instead of welcoming in the Messiah themselves and directing people toward him, they are not only not entering in, they are also shutting the door so that others can't enter in as well. 00:06:25.839 --> 00:06:29.120 They're known for their religious zeal for God. 00:06:30.399 --> 00:06:38.399 But while they were working in full-time ministry, they were working in full-time opposition to God's kingdom. 00:06:39.600 --> 00:06:42.319 What a horrendous waste of life. 00:06:43.360 --> 00:07:02.399 And this teaches us of the importance of knowing God rightly, of knowing and aligning ourselves with Him and His purposes, and being an instrument by which we point people His direction, not our own. 00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:05.279 This is exactly what the Pharisees were doing. 00:07:05.439 --> 00:07:13.279 They were calling attention to themselves and not wanting to point people to the Savior. 00:07:14.240 --> 00:07:25.040 Temptation is there in all of our hearts to want to be at the place and the center of all of the attention and of all the power and all the things that come with it. 00:07:25.680 --> 00:07:31.120 But Jesus here is calling out a woe against those who would do this. 00:07:32.639 --> 00:07:42.240 John the Baptist called out prior to Christ's coming, and he told people to repent, because the kingdom of heaven was at hand. 00:07:42.959 --> 00:07:53.920 But when Jesus came into the scene, his first words cried out, Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. 00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:59.519 He moved the attention off of himself toward Jesus Christ. 00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:03.920 And some of his own disciples were concerned about this. 00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:11.279 And John said those famous words, He must increase, and I must decrease. 00:08:51.200 --> 00:08:52.559 Paul said this. 00:09:05.200 --> 00:09:09.200 For no one can lay any foundation other than what has been laid down. 00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:13.200 That foundation is Jesus Christ. 00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:19.600 We have to ask ourselves: what kind of signpost are we? 00:09:20.559 --> 00:09:24.000 Are we a signpost of direction to the Savior? 00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:28.559 Or is it somehow just kind of trying to get people to focus in on ourselves? 00:09:29.360 --> 00:09:32.320 Woe number two is akin to this. 00:09:32.720 --> 00:09:35.440 These people were zealous in their efforts. 00:09:35.600 --> 00:09:38.480 They were definitely focused on making converts. 00:09:38.559 --> 00:09:44.240 In verse 15, it tells us that they traveled over land and sea to make one convert. 00:09:44.639 --> 00:09:53.279 However, when they made one, Jesus said, You make them twice the child of hell as you are. 00:09:55.759 --> 00:10:06.000 Not only were they putting a do not enter sign in front of heaven, they were also putting a you turn only sign in front of heaven. 00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:16.799 And so people that might want to enter in, seeing the do not enter, are being told by the Pharisees to turn around and head directly to hell. 00:10:18.320 --> 00:10:28.480 They were enthusiastic about trying to get people to conform to their strict sectarian understanding of Judaism, contending that their way was the only way. 00:10:29.519 --> 00:10:44.159 But they were actually influencing people even further away from God as those people listened to their voices and began to conform themselves to this self-righteous religious devotion that the Pharisees said they had to do. 00:11:09.840 --> 00:11:15.759 And then to find behind him 50 followers who are all going, I can wear camel hair too. 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:24.159 I'm going to eat locust too, and try to conform themselves to the physical characteristics of John the Baptist. 00:11:24.240 --> 00:11:32.000 When John is saying he's the one you should be following, you don't need to look like me, you don't need to eat like me. 00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:35.039 You need to be yourself and a follower of Jesus. 00:11:35.200 --> 00:11:37.600 This is what John the Baptist would do. 00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:42.000 We are to ensure that we encourage people to be followers of him. 00:11:42.720 --> 00:11:48.559 We need to understand the importance of our words and the eternal 00:12:40.639 Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whoever takes an oath by the temple, it means nothing, but whoever takes an oath by the gold of the temple is bound by his oath. 00:12:41.200 --> 00:12:46.799 These religious leaders were doing religious gameplaying with their words. 00:12:47.679 --> 00:12:58.960 So desirous to be the center of attention, so desirous to be the source of wisdom, people would come to them for counsel and ask, I've got an obligation. 00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:03.120 Am I obliged to keep my promise here or not? 00:13:03.279 --> 00:13:05.840 And they would go, well, when you made that oath of sort of substantiate your promise, did you call upon the temple as a justification and as it would rain down as a witness upon you? 00:13:36.480 --> 00:13:37.600 Yeah, I workday next Thursday, or whatever it was. 00:14:26.159 --> 00:14:56.799 And the next time, teacher, I made an oath, and they would make themselves the arbitrator of what people ought to do, whether or not they were bound by their word, and whatever foolish little scheme they dreamt up became the means by which people's lives were changed, whether they kept their word or not. 00:14:57.759 --> 00:15:04.159 And Jesus cuts through all of this and just shows it for it to be the silliness that it actually is. 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:20.879 And what Jesus is telling us here, we don't we're not to sell out our character or sell out our integrity with this sort of slippery slope formulas to release ourselves or people from promises that they've made. 00:15:22.159 --> 00:15:29.519 And we're also to be very careful about the wisdom we share with others, because it will affect people's lives. 00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:39.039 It will matter what you say, and they will go one way or the other, depending on what kind of advice you give. 00:15:41.039 --> 00:15:48.799 Rather, as believers, we should listen to what James did when he heard the words of the Savior here and in the Sermon on the 00:16:42.080 He comes back and he says, Okay, I've made my decision. 00:16:42.639 --> 00:16:49.519 Because in Psalm chapter 15, it says that a person who loves the Lord keeps his word no matter the he had a heart to listen, but I thank God I I had the wisdom to give him God's word instead of my, like, hey, well, you know, there'll be another work day. 00:17:22.720 --> 00:17:34.160 It could have been easy just as a dad to pass off that that obligation and look at the the joy that my son would have in meeting his friends and going out and doing stuff. 00:17:34.799 --> 00:17:39.839 It wasn't --> 00:18:08.079 These woes call these religious leaders to account for the way that they're blocking people from God as they're making them actually deeper liable to judgment, and as they're releasing them from obligations by the whimsical fascination of their minds. 00:18:09.599 --> 00:18:31.279 In verse the next woe, he again brings up this idea, and he tells them in verse 23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, you pay a tenth of mint and dill and cumin, and yet you've neglected the more important matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faithfulness. 00:18:31.519 --> In their scrupulous attention to ceremonial detail, they're so consumed in their time and their attention on these little things that they've forgotten, neglected, ignored. 00:19:22.160 --> how easy it is for us to get caught up in little details, to lose sight of the real purposes for what we're here for, to even interact with each other as the body of Christ, and to get entrenched in again they would criticize Jesus for eating with those who were not ceremonially clean, or his disciples eating things that they thought they shouldn't do, or doing things on a day they felt ought to be dealt with differently. 00:24:02.799 --> 00:24:11.680 But Jesus is saying, your heart the whole time is dirty. 00:24:12.480 --> 00:24:27.680 What good is it to be outwardly pure, to have this barrier separation from unclean people, while your heart all the while is full of greed and self-indulgence and lusting for religious pride. 00:24:30.880 --> 00:24:38.480 In order for them to be truly pure, they needed heart change, not just a change of clothes, not just a washing of hands. 00:24:39.680 --> 00:24:46.960 And the only way that they can have a changed heart is through the power of the in the military, one of the guys who was discipling me, along with teaching me how to read the Bible and how to pray and to love the church and to love the gospel and to share my resources with others by word and faithfulness and other ways, also taught me different things that I just took on board. 00:26:16.319 --> 00:26:19.920 This is what it means to be a Christian. 00:26:21.519 --> 00:26:27.759 And so I took on those things and even became a proponent of them for a while. 00:26:28.000 --> 00:26:33.519 And after a couple years, God began to crack the fissures of legalism in my heart. in England, and the daughter of my senior pastor and her husband were stationed in England, and we went to visit them and went to their church service one day, and they had a guest preacher there. 00:26:57.440 --> 00:27:07.599 And this his passage was this clap your hands, stamp your feet, and cry aloud over the evil and detestable practices of the house of Israel. 00:27:07.759 --> 00:27:10.079 So this guy took that passage very literally. 00:27:10.319 --> 00:27:18.480 He clapped his hands and he stomped his feet and he cried out aloud the sins of everybody but the people in that room. sh, and the next day I was outside um the home of our friends, and a guy came to me afterward, came up to them to visit, and he said, What did you think of that preaching last night? 00:28:31.359 --> 00:28:34.559 And this is what I said, and this is when it dawned on me. 00:28:35.039 --> 00:28:45.200 I said, I wonder if he had spent time talking about pride or greed or envy or gossip or playing the crowd for emotional fervor. 00:28:57.680 --> 00:29:08.640 He wasn't giving them anything that would speak to their hearts about giving themselves to God and the influence of the power of
