crowds that are around him about the dangers of the religious leaders in Israel. 00:01:30.319 --> 00:01:36.640 And last week we looked at the passage of scripture in chapter 23 from verses 1 through 12. 00:01:37.040 --> 00:01:45.760 And Jesus highlighted several practices of the religious leaders that he warned the people about. 00:01:46.319 --> 00:01:52.400 That they were hypocritical by way of being inconsistent with what they said and did. 00:01:52.799 --> 00:01:59.280 The commands that they gave were not the commands that they followed, but they were the commands they expected other people to follow. 00:01:59.519 --> 00:02:01.200 That's hypocrisy. 00:02:01.680 --> 00:02:11.439 He also talked about the heavy loads that they would lay on people, putting all these demands upon others without even lifting a finger, Jesus said, to help them. 00:02:12.639 --> 00:02:16.639 And then he also talked about their hungering for recognition. 00:02:17.039 --> 00:02:19.039 They loved the applause of others. 00:02:19.120 --> 00:02:21.120 They loved the places of prominence. 00:02:21.360 --> 00:02:24.400 They wanted to be seen by everyone. 00:02:24.879 --> 00:02:35.439 And so in their dress and in the places of prestige that they chose for themselves or pursued, they wanted others to know just how important they were. 00:02:36.800 --> 00:02:44.479 All of these were examples demonstrated by them of things that the Lord warns about. 00:02:44.800 --> 00:03:11.199 And here in our day, we can certainly take this to heart by looking for leaders in churches that are sincere, who try to align their life with what they preach, who are helpful, who are giving up their life in ministry for the betterment and help of others, who are devoted to God's praise and don't care a whit about whatever accolades they might receive, and who live humbly with an eye of service to others. 00:03:11.680 --> 00:03:22.240 But these are also characteristics of all of us as believers in Christ, that these are things that we need to be as well, because we stand as representatives of our Lord Jesus Christ in this world. 00:03:22.319 --> 00:03:33.680 And so we too are to be sincere, we too are to be helpful, we too are to be devoted to God's glory, and we too should be filled with hearts of humility and service. 00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:40.000 This is the last few days of earthly ministry of Jesus. 00:03:40.479 --> 00:03:44.080 One of the last things that he will talk about on this earth. 00:03:44.479 --> 00:04:07.520 And it's remarkable to me that here on the cusp of his approaching sufferings and his death, that he reminds us all of the characteristics of himself as the Savior and of those who must necessarily live like him as part of the kingdom. 00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:26.560 Jesus wants us to have no part with the ways of the world that are troublesome and sinful, those characteristics of pride, of showmanship, of one-upmanship, of profiting off of our own position, and certainly of hypocrisy. 00:04:27.199 --> 00:04:44.160 And so as we go deeper into Matthew 23, Jesus' words of warning in the verse 12 verses, as he speaks to the crowds, now become statements of woe as he addresses the religious leaders directly. 00:04:44.800 --> 00:04:58.399 He moves from the focus to the crowds by way of warning, and he now moves to the religious leaders themselves and speaks to them with a series of woes. 00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:03.920 Now, we're going to ask and answer the question what is a woe? 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:07.120 But I want you to notice with me just how significant this is. 00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:12.000 Take a look at verse, several verses, and we'll see this word woe show up a lot. 00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:16.800 Verse 13, woe to you, He knows what he's trying to say. 00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:20.639 And I know what he's trying to say. 00:06:21.040 --> 00:06:22.160 What is this? 00:06:22.639 --> 00:06:33.439 Well, it's a mixed cry of mournful sorrow with denunciation and condemnation. 00:06:35.120 --> 00:06:43.519 It's a bewailing of the miserable condition of these religious leaders who have missed it so terribly. 00:06:43.759 --> 00:06:55.279 And yet, at the same time, it's more than just a bewailing their miserable condition, it's condemning them for putting themselves into that terrible condition. 00:06:56.319 --> 00:07:04.079 So it's mixed together, pronouncing their fate and yet crying over their just condemnation. 00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:16.959 The Lord says in Ezekiel 33, as I live, this is the declaration of the Lord God, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked. 00:07:17.519 --> 00:07:19.600 And here we can see that here. 00:07:20.160 --> 00:07:34.959 We hear this mournful cry, and yet this condemnation of people who have so determinatively turned their hearts away from God, even though they're religious, the most religious people in society. 00:07:37.199 --> 00:07:42.879 Tragically, these men are unaware of the judgment that awaits them. 00:07:43.279 --> 00:07:55.920 They're living a life in a fantasy world of their own making, secure in their own thoughts, that they're living a life of pleasant and future blessedness and heavenly reward. 00:07:56.959 --> 00:07:59.519 But the reality is far from the case. 00:08:01.439 --> 00:08:08.639 And Jesus' woes are meant to be an abrupt, perhaps even rude awakening for them. 00:08:09.600 --> 00:08:12.160 Giving them the recipe of repentance. 00:08:12.720 --> 00:08:16.319 What are the areas that need correction in your life? 00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:19.040 Religious leaders, here they are. 00:08:19.839 --> 00:08:27.120 And if they would only listen to that, their hearts could have been moved the right direction. 00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:34.799 But instead of this being a recipe of repentance, it becomes an indictment of judgment. 00:08:38.559 --> 00:08:44.879 Well, we're going to look briefly at each of these woes this week and also the next time we come back to Matthew 23. 00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:51.759 Next Sunday, we're going to look at an Easter passage, a beautiful passage out of the Psalms that speaks these indictments against these men, these denunciations of their horrible behavior, and seeing what kind of positive encouragement we might receive and how we ought to live our lives, and what kind of focus we should present as representatives of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:27.039 There are several positive, contrasting encouragements to be found in these woes. 00:09:27.440 --> 00:09:28.879 But let's walk through them. 00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:31.519 We're going to look at the first four this morning. 00:09:31.759 --> 00:09:34.559 The first woe is found in verse 13. 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:48.320 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, you shut the door of the kingdom in people's faces, for you don't go in, and you don't allow those entering to go in. 00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:54.399 Now, before we look at this passage, I want you to notice something that I think some of you will ask. 00:09:54.559 --> 00:09:56.559 There's no verse 14 here, right? 00:09:56.799 --> 00:10:00.240 You go from verse 13, it jumps directly to verse 15. 00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:06.080 If you have a New King James Version, for instance, you will see verse 14. 00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:12.000 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. 00:10:12.159 --> 00:10:14.879 Therefore you'll receive the greater condemnation. 00:10:16.080 --> 00:10:30.559 The reason why we don't see it in this version and many other versions of the English Bible, and also other versions in other languages, is there are some internal and external reasons why this passage, verse 14, is not included here. 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:41.440 Verse 14 is derived from two parallel passages where it does show up without question in Mark 12, 40, and Luke 20 and verse 47. 00:10:42.639 --> 00:10:54.960 But if you were to read those passages, you would discover that the substance of what's said there is in the context of the warnings to the crowd rather than the woes to the religious leaders. 00:10:55.200 --> 00:10:56.080 Let me read it. 00:10:56.240 --> 00:10:57.360 Mark 12. 00:10:57.600 --> 00:11:13.759 In his teaching, he was saying, that is Jesus, beware the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, like respectful greetings in marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, who devour widows' houses and for appearance' sake offer long prayers. 00:11:14.159 --> 00:11:16.480 They will receive the greater condemnation. 00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:21.440 So you can see it's a statement about them, not to them, in that passage. 00:11:21.600 --> 00:11:28.480 And again, Luke 20 and verse 45 to 47 says exactly the same thing. 00:11:29.919 --> 00:11:39.759 So there's some internal reasons here why we would say that this passage in Matthew was added by a scribe at some later point. 00:11:40.639 --> 00:11:53.120 Additionally, in some of the manuscripts that we have of the Gospel of Matthew, that verse is sometimes placed before verse 13, and sometimes it's placed after verse 13. 00:11:53.279 --> 00:12:01.200 So those are internal, what we call internal reasons, why we would wonder whether or not that verse itself is placed here. 00:12:02.159 --> 00:12:16.159 There's also some external reasons, and that is that the manuscripts themselves often don't have this 00:12:39.200 They truly are taking advantage of weak people, and in their weakness, they don't find a reason to help, but a reason to manipulate. 00:12:39.360 --> 00:12:41.200 What a horrible thing that is. 00:12:41.600 --> 00:12:45.919 But for now, let's focus on verse 13 and take a look at this. 00:12:46.080 --> 00:12:49.039 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. 00:12:49.279 --> 00:12:59.360 You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces, for you don't go in, and you don't allow those entering to go in. 00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:04.559 This is what a horrible indictment this is against the Pharisees. 00:13:04.720 --> 00:13:08.960 These men, the Pharisees, were not part of the priestly elite of society. 00:13:09.120 --> 00:13:14.960 They were people, however, who held powerful religious influence among the people. 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:25.679 They started out as a group of people about 150 years prior to this moment, who were concerned about trends in their society. 00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:37.039 They were concerned about the Jewish nation becoming more and more like the ruling Hellenistic Greeks who were controlling that part of the world. 00:13:37.279 --> 00:13:50.960 And they were seeing the move away from the language and the culture and the religion of Israel becoming more Greek in their speech, more Greek in their dress, more Greek in their worship. 00:13:51.200 --> 00:14:06.720 And they reacted against that move in society, and they did so by trying to become more committed to the language and the dress and the behavior of Jewish people. 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:33.759 They developed a system of ritual precision by which they would operate as signs of keeping the larger law, and they would find themselves with all kinds of added ordinances and regulations to give a distance, a physical, cultural, and social distance from anything that looked Greek at all. 00:14:35.600 --> 00:14:42.720 And so as they scoured scripture, they weren't looking for the heart of what God's word had to say. 00:14:43.120 --> 00:14:57.919 Rather, they were looking for details by which they might be able to demonstrate their purity and demonstrate their separateness from everything that wasn't essentially Jewish. 00:15:00.320 --> 00:15:15.039 And as they developed as a group of people called the Pharisees, which may have been derived from a word which means the separated ones, they began to hold sway over society. 00:15:16.879 --> 00:15:31.919 And Jesus here is speaking with words of condemnation that their whole focus is not in alignment with God's will, and it's having a negative influence upon those that they speak to. 00:15:33.279 --> 00:15:42.080 He's telling them that they are wrong, dead wrong, in their understanding. 00:15:42.320 --> 00:15:52.639 Not only do they not enter into the doorway of the kingdom of heaven, they are shutting the door for others so that those people might go in themselves. 00:15:53.679 --> 00:16:10.799 And so when John the Baptist, for instance, came and preached a statement of repentance to the people to prepare themselves for the Lord who was about to come, these men, instead of listening to John the Baptist, said, What kind of message is that? 00:16:13.279 --> 00:16:16.639 And they ignored his ministry. 00:16:17.279 --> 00:16:24.720 And when Jesus stood up and preached a message, repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, it's here. 00:16:25.200 --> 00:16:38.879 Again, they refused because when Jesus began to expand upon the word of God, he talked about an internal change of heart, not forms of religion. 00:16:39.759 --> 00:16:54.159 And they didn't want to hear that because they could control how they acted religiously, but they knew, like all of us know, that we actually can't change who we are. 00:16:54.480 --> 00:16:56.320 Only God can do that. 00:16:58.720 --> 00:17:07.039 And so finding their influence, finding their place in society under threat, they refused John the Baptist. 00:17:07.200 --> 00:17:09.200 They refused Jesus. 00:17:09.599 --> 00:17:26.000 And when Jesus began to speak favorably to those that they thought they needed to stay separate from, their disregard of Jesus turned into a determined effort to rid this world of Jesus. 00:17:26.640 --> 00:18:02.559 So when Jesus began to sit with prostitutes and to sit with people who acted as tax collectors, when Jesus began to embrace the brokenhearted and the diseased, when he began to speak favorably to the Gentiles, they said, wait a second, this guy cannot be the Jewish Messiah because he would be joining our cause and separating the Jewish people from anything that might taint their religious and ethical identity. 00:18:05.759 --> 00:18:14.799 So they asserted the right to speak authoritatively about God and missed the whole message about God. 00:18:16.240 --> 00:18:27.599 And they were in actuality shutting themselves out and shutting out their hearers from hearing about the wonderful truth of God's rule coming in Jesus Christ. 00:18:28.079 --> 00:18:32.480 This long-anticipated and prophesied Messiah, Jesus himself. 00:18:33.519 --> 00:18:38.559 And instead of welcoming Jesus, they directed people away from him. 00:18:39.200 --> 00:18:44.880 They sought their own power and their own prestige and shut the door of heaven. us? 00:19:16.640 --> 00:19:27.839 Well, this teaches us of the temptation to be absolutely deluded in our way of thinking, to be completely contrary to truth, and yet be assured that we own it. 00:19:29.519 --> 00:19:35.200 It's also teaching us of the importance of aligning ourselves with God's purposes in Christ. 00:19:36.160 --> 00:19:43.119 And one of the things about our generation is brothers and sisters who were Jewish, and he said, My heart's desire, my prayer to God concerning them is for their salvation. 00:20:15.440 --> 00:20:21.440 I can testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 00:20:22.400 --> 00:20:31.759 Since they're ignorant to the righteousness of God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not can be seen as righteous in the eyes of God is through the one who suffered for us and the one who obeyed in our place, the Lord Jesus Christ, and to cast ourselves. 00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:00.640 On who are believers in Christ, that we have a responsibility to model our life as signposts for the kingdom of heaven rather than to shut the door of the kingdom of heaven. 00:23:35.200 --> 00:23:46.799 And it's important that we examine ourselves and ask ourselves is my hand inviting or is my hand shutting people away? 00:23:47.839 --> 00:23:57.200 Am I one of those ones who's trying to shut down a curious heart or to point the way of a lost soul? 00:23:59.839 --> 00:24:14.160 In John chapter 3, John the Baptist was confronted by some troubles disciples of his who were concerned that he was being sort of overshadowed by this one who was baptizing Jesus across the river. 00:24:14.880 --> 00:24:28.720 And upset that their mentor was ministry, was kind of deflating a bit, they spoke to him and said, Rabbi, the one you testified about, the one who was with you across the Jordan, he's baptizing and everybody is going with him. 00:24:30.880 --> 00:24:32.720 What did John the Baptist say? 00:24:33.599 --> 00:24:46.640 He said, He said, This you yourselves can testify that I said, I'm not the Messiah, but I've been sent ahead of him. 00:24:48.319 --> 00:24:51.759 He who has the bride is the groom. 00:24:53.599 --> 00:24:59.599 But the groom's friend, that's me, who stands by and listens for him. 00:25:01.680 --> 00:25:08.880 Well, we rejoice greatly at the groom's voice, at the signposts of Him that help people who are in the need of salvation, to show them the suitability of Christ to meet their need, to be the only cure for the disease of disobedience that is destroying out of there, and yet you're like, no, knocking a camel down every time you drink another spoonful. 00:41:15.360 --> 00:41:18.079 He said, How can this be? 00:41:19.440 --> 00:41:34.719 How can you be so scrupulous in your attention to ceremonial details and not understand how important matters like justice and mercy and faith are? 00:41:41.039 --> 00:41:56.079 To bring right where there's wrongs, to bring mercy where there is wrong, to bring faithfulness where there is nothing but apostasy. 00:41:57.360 --> 00:42:00.400 He says, Don't you see how important those things are? 00:42:03.360 --> 00:42:06.159 Micah chapter six. 00:42:06.480 --> 00:42:14.800 Mankind, he's told you what is good, what it is the Lord requires of you to act justly, to love faithfulness, to walk humbly with your God. 00:42:18.320 --> 00:42:28.960 These men were attending to the minutiae of legal details, straining out the smallest little bug, and yet in one swallow putting down a camel. 00:42:29.840 --> 00:42:34.719 The gnat and the camel were both indicated in the Old Testament as unclean animals. 00:42:35.039 --> 00:42:48.320 They were stepping all over and neglecting the true heavyweight issues of God's word by having this burdensome preoccupation with the smallest little details. 00:42:49.679 --> 00:42:57.280 And they were getting caught up in these legalistic demands and expectations and not seeing the big picture. 00:42:59.119 --> 00:43:15.360 So, as a body of Christ here, it's important that we understand what is essential to life in Christ, what is primary in God's word, those things that are necessary for life and godliness. 00:43:15.679 --> 00:43:35.360 And to realize that there are certain things that are attendant to the Christian life that are issues of conscience, and that some of those issues even get down to the point of personal preference, depending on our backgrounds, our age, our experiences. 00:43:36.800 --> 00:43:49.199 And we might have a discussion gladly about whether or not we like the organ, or whether or not we like the piano, or whether we'd like or not have a drum set up here, or someone playing the violin, or whatever. 00:43:49.519 --> 00:43:59.679 But how dare we make any kind of comment about any of those things in a way that would destroy the life of someone Christ died for simply because we'd rather. 00:44:00.320 --> 00:44:08.239 Have one instrument over another or something along those lines. 00:44:08.880 --> 00:44:15.039 Here the Lord is telling us lift up your eyes and see the bigger picture. 00:44:15.679 --> this message, in the middle of this hard, hard, hard passage, we see some things that are helpful and encouraging, meant to be engendered in our life as believers. 00:45:23.760 --> 00:45:42.480 These are lessons I've had to learn the hard way in my early walk as a believer, giving emphasis to things that were of no account in God's eyes, calling people to do things that God would never tell them things, that we're under the sound of the same word, not so that we can point a finger at them, but so that we might learn a lesson for ourselves, right? 00:47:01.119 --> 00:47:02.400 Let's pray. that are in our homes, the ones that are in our neighborhoods, the ones that we work alongside of, the ones that we interact on social media with, the ones that we drive past or are driven by, that we
