at a minister's meeting in Nottingham, England, William Carey preached a sermon called the Deathless Sermon. 00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:55.679 And it was based on Isaiah chapter 54, verses 2 and 3. day was probably one of the most powerful and life-changing sermons he ever delivered. 00:01:24.879 --> 00:01:31.040 It had two main points: expect great things, attempt great things. 00:01:31.680 --> want us to take some minutes together and look at this passage of scripture that drew Carrie's attention as he preached that deathless sermon about the need to bring the gospel around the world. 00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:25.600 Isaiah chapter 54. 00:04:26.240 --> 00:04:37.199 When you read Isaiah chapter 54, it's good to remember that you're in a larger part of the book of Isaiah called the Servant Songs of Isaiah. 00:04:37.680 --> 00:04:42.720 And there are three sections to this portion of scripture in Isaiah. 00:04:42.800 --> 00:04:46.000 There are three parts to the servant songs. 00:04:46.399 --> 00:04:52.800 The first part begins in chapter 49 and runs up near to the end of chapter 52. 00:04:53.839 --> 00:05:15.439 And in that portion of the servant's songs, God is speaking to the nation of Israel, a nation that has already been prophesied about as about to be banished from their land and to be exiled in a foreign country because of their apostasy, of their treacherous revolt against their God. 00:05:16.240 --> 00:05:21.920 So they're going to be brought into exile and banishment from the land. 00:05:24.399 --> 00:05:35.439 However, this first part, God speaks to this nation and tells them that there is more to the story than just their banishment and exile. 00:05:36.560 --> 00:06:02.319 He issues in this first part of the servant songs a promise, a promise that he would remove the sin of the nation that had caused this exile, that he would remove from them the shame of their banishment, and that this removal of that sin would come through the one who is the servant of the Lord. 00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:13.120 This servant of the Lord would be for Israel what Israel could not and would not be for itself, obedient to the Father. 00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:19.600 And through his servanthood, the people Israel would be restored to the Lord. 00:06:19.920 --> 00:06:33.199 And through him, the redeemed people of Israel would have an influence into the nations, and the whole world would find the possibility of redemption because of this. 00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:44.720 In Isaiah chapter 49 through 52, God is telling the people of Israel that he has not utterly cast them off, that he has a plan to deliver them. 00:06:44.959 --> 00:06:52.319 He has a plan to deliver them not just from physical captivity, but from spiritual captivity. 00:06:54.079 --> 00:06:57.600 The climax of that promise comes in chapter 52. 00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:08.079 The second part of the servant's songs is found in the last verse of 52 and all of chapter 53. 00:07:08.800 --> 00:07:17.199 And we discover not only the promise, but how this promise of restoration is to happen. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:30.399 The servant of the Lord, the servant of the Lord, who is that one who Israel could not be for itself, is going to give up his life on behalf of the people. 00:07:31.360 --> 00:07:38.879 And because of his sacrifice in service to God, the people would be restored. 00:07:40.079 --> 00:07:44.000 They would be no longer alienated from God. 00:07:44.560 --> 00:07:52.560 They would be brought into fellowship with God and would be thus again serviceable to God. 00:07:54.000 --> 00:08:07.199 And then in the third section of the servant songs, chapters 54 and 55, we find that God is singing songs to the nations of invitation. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:17.600 Chapter 54 is a love song by God to Zion of all the things that He's going to do for these people that are restored to him. 00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:35.360 And then in chapter 55 is an invitation for the nation not to miss the promises and the fulfillment of the servant, or of these great things that God has in store for them by way of continued unbelief. 00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:39.840 They need to believe these promises. 00:08:40.159 --> 00:08:44.080 They need to believe the God who has granted these promises. 00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:48.320 They need to trust the commissioning part of this service, I want to draw out some points from this passage of scripture. 00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:24.080 This passage of scripture that led William Carey to preach his deathless sermon about the need to bring the gospel around the world, where he made these two points: expect great things and attempt great things. 00:09:25.120 --> 00:09:28.240 I'd like for us to draw out four points this morning. 00:09:28.399 --> 00:09:33.440 The first is found in verse one, and that is the call to rejoice. 00:09:33.919 --> 00:09:35.519 The call to rejoice. 00:09:35.840 --> 00:09:38.240 Take a look at chapter 54 in verse one. 00:09:38.960 --> 00:09:43.200 Rejoice, childless one who did not give birth. 00:09:43.440 --> 00:09:48.559 Burst into song and shout, you who have not been in labor. 00:09:49.039 --> 00:09:56.159 For the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of the married woman, says the Lord. 00:09:57.679 --> 00:10:16.559 God is speaking to the nation of Israel, people who were disobedient, who were rebels against God, who, because of their treacherous apostasy, were about to be brought into exile, banishment from the land of promise, members of foreign nations. 00:10:17.600 --> 00:10:23.919 And God tells them that they are presently barren, childless. 00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:35.120 And in this culture and in this day, to be childless and to be barren was to bear a weight of shame that was hard to deal with. 00:10:35.759 --> 00:10:45.840 Infidelity would mark a woman with a great degree of being ostracized and shamed by the other people in society. 00:10:47.039 --> 00:10:59.120 And God is looking upon this nation and saying that you, Israel, are a people that are a shamed people, a barren people, an infertile people. 00:11:00.320 --> 00:11:04.240 You are a people that have nothing to be happy about. 00:11:06.320 --> 00:11:11.360 God, when he formed the nation of Israel, said that they were to be a light to the world. 00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:13.519 Had they been that light? 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:15.440 No, they had not. 00:11:16.080 --> 00:11:27.840 They had participated in idolatrous worship with the nations around them, and had been more influenced by those nations than to be an influence to those nations. 00:11:31.039 --> 00:11:37.200 No, this infertility was not just simply a providential moment. 00:11:37.360 --> 00:11:41.120 It was because of their activity of sin. 00:11:42.320 --> 00:11:44.240 It was their own fault. 00:11:46.639 --> 00:11:50.399 But God is inviting them to rejoice. 00:11:51.120 --> 00:11:55.759 He's inviting them to lift up their voices and to sing. 00:11:57.600 --> 00:12:03.200 And on the surface, this seems like a rather cruel and bitter mockery of their condition. 00:12:06.799 --> 00:12:09.120 But Isaiah's not rubbing it in. 00:12:10.559 --> 00:12:23.759 Isaiah is calling them to sincere rejoicing, to calling them for a real reason to take up their voices and to sing with joy, triumphant. 00:12:24.960 --> 00:12:40.879 Because he's relocating Israel's focus from themselves to the Lord, the suffering servant in Isaiah 53, who would see his offspring and increase his seed. 00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:54.799 And throughout the book of Isaiah, God has reminded them that their failure is real, that they really have no hope at all in themselves. 00:12:56.000 --> 00:13:00.720 But if they would believe on the suffering servant, they would thrive. 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:23.200 If they would hear and believe the good news of this sin-bearing servant of the Lord, the mountains of frost and ice of their hearts would melt, and their own treacherous apostasy would fall away, and the shame of it would disappear, and they would find reason to rejoice. 00:13:25.440 --> 00:13:29.200 Because there was a good news of a surprising salvation. 00:13:30.320 --> 00:13:38.320 There was a future to look forward to that would cause them to laugh and to sing and to shout and to cheer. 00:13:39.919 --> 00:13:50.960 And it is the servant song of Isaiah 53 that pronounces the good news that the anointed one would take their failure. 00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:54.159 The anointed one would take their shame. 00:13:54.399 --> 00:13:57.039 The anointed one would take their sin. 00:13:57.519 --> 00:14:00.720 The anointed one would take their judgment. 00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:06.480 And if they believed on the anointed one, they would be free. 00:14:08.559 --> 00:14:13.200 Their sin and shame and separation from God is gone. 00:14:13.919 --> 00:14:23.679 And in its place is a surprising fellowship with God, the Holy One, an undeserved deliverance. 00:14:25.120 --> 00:14:28.159 And there's reason for us to rejoice, isn't there? 00:14:29.200 --> 00:14:39.200 Because we too, like these people are called to do, not looking forward to that coming servant of the Lord who would give up his life. 00:14:39.440 --> 00:14:45.840 We look back on the servant of the Lord Jesus, who already has given up his life. 00:14:46.159 --> 00:14:54.799 And we find that our shame of sin and the separation from God of our sin is gone in Christ. 00:14:55.759 --> 00:15:01.200 And now we have a surprising, undeserved salvation. 00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:10.720 We have reason to lift up our voices and to laugh and to sing and to shout and to cheer. 00:15:11.519 --> 00:15:17.600 And this is why the apostle Peter wrote, he said, Though you've not seen Jesus, you love him. 00:15:18.240 --> 00:15:35.919 And though you're not seeing him now, you believe in him, and you rejoice with inexplicable and inexpressible glorious joy, because you're receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your soul. 00:15:37.759 --> 00:15:41.919 John Calvin understood this, and he said this. 00:15:42.080 --> 00:15:51.600 He said, The church is a place where the good news is preached, and the gospel is that good news. 00:15:52.960 --> 00:15:57.679 And good news makes people happy, and happy people sing. 00:15:59.039 --> 00:15:59.679 Amen. 00:16:02.080 --> 00:16:03.519 Why do we sing? 00:16:04.159 --> 00:16:08.159 Why is this building filled with joyful sound? 00:16:08.639 --> 00:16:12.480 Is it because we're trophies of our own self-righteousness? 00:16:12.799 --> 00:16:13.120 No. 00:16:14.320 --> 00:16:25.919 Because our shame is gone in Christ, our sin is gone in Christ, our separation from God is gone in Christ, and we've received a surprising deliverance. 00:16:26.720 --> 00:16:33.679 A holy God has looked on us and said, There's no condemnation to you in Jesus Christ. 00:16:34.559 --> 00:16:37.200 Boy, that'll cause the dead to sing. 00:16:38.639 --> 00:16:40.639 And that's exactly who we are. 00:16:40.879 --> 00:16:45.200 Those who were dead in trespasses and sins and now made alive in Christ. 00:16:45.440 --> 00:16:49.679 And what marks us as believers is a rejoicing heart. 00:16:50.159 --> 00:16:51.440 We rejoice. 00:16:54.000 --> 00:17:04.400 Israel is called to look forward, to look forward to a time when the shame will be gone and all that's left is singing. 00:17:05.039 --> 00:17:14.559 When the separation is gone and all is left is fellowship, when the barrenness is over and all is left is fruitfulness. 00:17:15.680 --> 00:17:17.359 Look forward, they say. 00:17:33.599 --> 00:17:37.279 Burst into song and shout, you who have not been in labor. 00:17:37.680 --> 00:17:38.319 Why? 00:17:39.440 --> 00:17:46.000 Because the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of the married woman. 00:17:47.359 --> 00:17:49.759 You're no longer going to be barren. 00:17:51.119 --> 00:18:00.720 The prophet Isaiah spoke to Judah as a people like a forsaken woman, deprived of husband and children, all because of her treacherous behavior. 00:18:00.960 --> 00:18:03.039 She was stricken with shame. 00:18:03.359 --> 00:18:07.599 She was left barren without strength or resources. 00:18:08.640 --> 00:18:12.480 Her destiny was utterly hopeless. 00:18:12.880 --> 00:18:35.119 She would come in like a barren, forsaken wife, with no protector, left desolate only to think about a haunting darkness of her future, all the more intense in the knowledge that she had brought it upon herself because she had forsaken her husband and was the reason why she was barren. 00:18:37.200 --> 00:18:40.160 As a nation, Israel truly was floundering. 00:18:41.440 --> 00:18:50.319 Her husband was gone, she had no children, no life could come from her again by her own strength. 00:18:51.039 --> 00:18:53.839 But that's not the end of the story. 00:18:55.920 --> 00:18:58.799 God would turn all of this around. 00:18:59.519 --> 00:19:02.720 A day was coming when Israel would flourish. 00:19:03.279 --> 00:19:10.960 A day would dawn when the children of this desolate woman would be more than the children of the married women. 00:19:13.759 --> 00:19:16.160 And that day indeed is dawned. 00:19:16.799 --> 00:19:22.400 It's dawned with the coming of the suffering servant who would see his offspring. 00:19:24.079 --> 00:19:36.319 And this is why, in the early days of the church, when Peter stood in Jerusalem just some days after the resurrection and ascension of Christ, he preached to the nation of Israel. 00:19:36.559 --> 00:19:42.400 He spoke to his Jewish listeners, and he said to them, brothers and sisters, and he meant my fellow Jews. 00:19:43.039 --> 00:19:57.200 I know that you've acted in ignorance, just as your leaders have also done, but in this way God has fulfilled what he's predicted in all the prophets, that the Messiah would suffer, Isaiah 53. 00:19:59.200 --> 00:20:02.640 Therefore, repent and turn back. 00:20:03.279 --> 00:20:03.839 Why? 00:20:04.000 --> 00:20:17.759 So that your sins might be wiped out, that seasons of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send you Jesus, who has been appointed for you as give birth. 00:22:56.559 --> 00:23:12.559 And this childless, rejected woman would have a husband return, and her household would be overflowing with children, so large that he says, Make your tent bigger. 00:23:12.960 --> 00:23:14.480 No, make it bigger. 00:23:14.799 --> 00:23:16.480 No, make it bigger. 00:23:16.799 --> 00:23:28.480 No, make it larger, because not only will your children be there, but there will be the nations in the tent as well. 00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:38.880 The nations will come to feel the influence of this blessing of return. 00:23:40.960 --> 00:24:03.839 The apostle Paul, writing to the Gentile people of the churches of Galatia, in chapter four, quotes Isaiah 54 and speaks to these Gentile believers with these words Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear. 00:24:04.160 --> 00:24:13.440 Break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor, for the children of the desolate will be more than those of the one who has a husband. 00:24:13.759 --> 00:24:16.799 That is Galatians chapter 4 and verse 27. 00:24:17.440 --> 00:24:22.160 A direct quote of Isaiah chapter 54. 00:24:23.200 --> 00:24:35.119 The Apostle Paul is asserting here that the Gentiles coming to Jesus Christ are the fulfillment of the promises of Isaiah's prophecy in chapter 54. 00:24:36.079 --> 00:24:49.519 And he's showing that the incoming of these Gentile believers on the Lord Jesus Christ are part of God's refreshing rejuvenation of the people of Israel. 00:24:49.839 --> 00:24:56.640 And he insists that Isaiah's prophecies being fulfilled among the Galatian churches. 00:24:57.599 --> 00:25:03.759 They are part of the children promised in Isaiah 54. 00:25:04.319 --> 00:25:19.359 And this is why the two verses before that, he says this now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 00:25:19.759 --> 00:25:26.880 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 00:25:28.960 --> 00:25:53.920 Paul is taking the prophecy of Isaiah and speaking about the new covenant promises that are found in Christ the suffering servant, and that those of the household of Israel who believe in Jesus the Christ are part of this new band of people who are now fruitful in increasing and affecting the nations. 00:25:55.359 --> 00:26:03.039 The writer of Hebrews said, in similar tone and words, exactly what Paul is saying here. 00:26:03.359 --> 00:26:32.640 You've come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to myriads of angels, and to a festive gathering, to the assembly of the firstborn whose names have been written in heaven, to a judge who is the God of all, to the spirits of righteous people made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better things than the blood of Abel. 00:26:33.279 --> 00:26:37.599 You have come to the life of the new covenant. 00:26:39.759 --> 00:27:08.480 And though the New Testament church in those early days was extremely small, a band of eleven men cowering in an upper room, wondering what happened to their Savior who died, to find him alive and appearing to them as they prayed and feared, saying, Don't be troubled, be at peace. 00:27:09.759 --> 00:27:21.680 A promise is coming, and you will receive the spirit of power, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and to all the ends of the earth. 00:27:22.000 --> 00:27:36.400 And this small little band of meager men realized that they were about to give birth as they preached the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures concerning his Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who's a descendant of David, according to the flesh, appointed to be the powerful Son of God according to the spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead, from whom we've received grace and apostleship to bring the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among the Gentiles, including you who are also called by Christ Jesus. 00:29:02.319 --> 00:29:17.599 Paul said, I have been made a messenger of the gospel for the purposes of bringing a people who do not know our God to know our God in Christ. 00:29:19.039 --> 00:29:30.559 And this is why he said in Romans 1:16 that he was not ashamed of the gospel, for it was the power of God to the Jew first, but also to the Gentile. 00:29:31.599 --> 00:29:51.920 And why in Romans chapter 15 he said that Christ had become a servant to the circumcised on the behalf of God's truth to fulfill the promises ropes and drive your pegs deep, for you will spread out to the right and to the left, and your descendants will dispossess nations and inhabit the desolate cities. 00:32:04.880 --> 00:32:31.759 God is saying to spiritually barren Israel, who were not fulfilling their commission to bring the knowledge of the true God to the nations, that there would be a reversal of that, and that they would indeed become the people out of exile who would be bringing the message of life and that it would grow. 00:32:32.000 --> 00:32:41.519 And so this barren woman, this forsaken wife, is told that her house Ethiopia. 00:37:21.280 --> 00:37:35.679 And then the tent pegs of mercy surprisingly lifted and landed in Acts chapter 9 on top of a prosecuting, persecuting young man by the name of Saul of Tarsus. 00:38:17.840 And the scriptures say in Acts chapter 9: so that the church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and was strengthened, and living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged in further regions, and they speak first to the Jews, but then they speak to the Gentiles. 00:40:03.679 --> 00:40:09.039 And they quote from Isaiah's servant songs, this time from Isaiah 49. 00:40:09.760 --> 00:40:16.559 Paul and Barnabas boldly replied, It is necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, Jewish people. 00:40:16.880 --> 00:40:30.639 But since you reject it and judge yourself unworthy of eternal life, we're turning to the Gentiles, for this is what the Lord has commanded I've made you a light for the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth. 00:40:30.880 --> 00:40:42.159 And when the Gentiles heard this, they rejoiced and honored the word of the Lord, and all who had been appointed to eternal life believed, and the word of the Lord spread --> 00:41:59.760 He said, The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah, Go to these people and say, You'll always be listening, but never understanding. of the power of God to reverse her suffering, the power of God to bring renewal and life where there was none, to bring a dead womb to life, and to give her a household full of pattering, cheering,
