loves to ask questions that touch the heart. 00:02:21.439 --> 00:02:24.639 What do you think about the Messiah? 00:02:27.199 --> 00:02:30.400 That's a question that should grip our hearts. --> 00:03:14.319 Both of those English words, Christ Messiah, speak of an anointed one. 00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:20.719 Throughout the Old Testament, God had various people that were anointed for different tasks. 00:03:21.120 --> 00:03:24.560 But there was coming a greater anointed one. 00:03:24.879 --> 00:03:31.599 There was coming a greater anointed prophet, a greater anointed priest, a --> 00:04:13.360 I ran into someone online, I saw this, I had never heard of this person, Richard Bach, but he has a book from a number of years ago, and the title of his book is Messiah's Handbook, book, but I saw one quote from it where he says this. 00:04:28.319 --> 00:04:34.399 Being true to anyone else or anything else is the mark of a fake Messiah. 00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:37.439 Who wants a 00:04:48.319 But that message of be true to yourself, we're constantly having that pushed on us. 00:04:48.399 --> 00:04:57.279 And while the word messiah is not always used, that's kind of the upshot of all of that advice is you can be your own messiah. 00:04:58.639 --> 00:05:01.279 The Bible says actually just the opposite. 00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:10.959 If we want to really grasp hold of God's Messiah, we have to look away from ourselves and to God's provision of a Messiah. 00:05:13.680 --> 00:05:26.319 If we want to address the question of who the Messiah is, if we want, and we should desperately want to grasp hold of the true Messiah, then according to our passage, we have to do two things. 00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:34.000 We need to read the scripture carefully and receive the the scripture carefully. 00:05:45.120 --> 00:05:55.519 In verse number 42, Jesus asked this question about not only what do you think about the Messiah, but then Jesus asks more specifically, whose son is he? 00:05:56.079 --> 00:05:59.600 And the Pharisees answer, David's son. 00:06:00.639 --> 00:06:02.560 Where did they get that idea? 00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:07.279 Do they get that from extra-rabbinic tradition? 00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:09.759 No, they get that from the Old Testament itself. 00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:11.519 It's actually there in the Old Testament. 00:06:11.680 --> 00:06:15.279 Here's a few passages, Jeremiah 23, 5 and 6. 00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:16.720 Look, the days are coming. 00:06:16.879 --> 00:06:21.759 This is the Lord's declaration, when I will raise up a righteous branch for David. 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:26.399 He will reign wisely as king and administer justice and righteousness in the land. 00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:31.040 In his days, Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. 00:06:31.279 --> 00:06:32.639 This is the name he will be called. 00:06:32.800 --> 00:06:35.360 The Lord is our righteousness. 00:06:36.319 --> 00:06:38.399 Isaiah 11, 1 and 2. 00:06:38.639 --> 00:06:52.720 A shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, a branch from his roots will bear fruit, the spirit of the Lord will rest on him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and strength, a spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 00:06:54.399 --> 00:07:09.040 All of these various prophetic expectations about a coming Messiah, a coming son of David, they're built on the backbone of God's promise to David, which Banu read from earlier today. 00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:17.040 So I won't read that entire passage again, but you may want to mark it down and just look at it again later on this afternoon or this week. 00:07:17.279 --> 00:07:24.319 2 Samuel chapter 7, where God promises to raise up a son to sit on David's throne. 00:08:55.840 I don't mean by that, just make up something and whatever you think it might mean, fill it in. 00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:06.799 But God's given us a capacity to make comparisons, to take concrete things like a tree and learn an abstract lesson from something concrete. 00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:16.159 In scripture, often trees and vines in the Old Testament are compared to people, to families, to kingdoms. 00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:19.679 We don't speak a lot like that today. 00:09:20.159 --> 00:09:26.320 I don't see James and Betty's newborn and say, oh, that's quite a branch you there's a clue there that when God speaks about raising up a righteous branch, he's talking about a person, not some uh arboretum in David's palace courtyard. 00:09:49.519 --> 00:09:56.879 And then you have to know, or reading scripture carefully, Jeremiah prophesied long after David was dead. 00:09:57.360 --> 00:10:08.080 So he couldn't have been talking about a royal advisor in David's court or even David's own immediate son, Solomon, because this is years and years later. 00:10:08.720 --> 00:10:16.480 And there's another clue there in Jeremiah: God will raise up a righteous branch. 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:29.279 And you don't have to know Hebrew. 00:10:29.440 --> 00:10:35.840 Most of our translations, they use the same phrase in 2 Samuel 7 that Jeremiah does in Jeremiah chapter 23. 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:42.559 And there's a common theme on top of that in the Old Testament of an unrighteous king and the need for a righteous king. 00:10:43.200 --> 00:10:47.440 So that passage in Jeremiah about God raising up a righteous branch. 00:10:47.840 --> 00:11:01.039 We have verbal clues, we have conceptual metaphors, we have running theological themes that all contribute to helping Matthew 22, after the Pharisees correctly answer that the coming Messiah is David's son, Jesus asks a follow-up question in verse 43. 00:13:22.159 --> 00:13:29.679 How is it then, he says, that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord? 00:13:30.480 --> 00:13:34.799 And then in verse 44, Jesus quotes from Psalm 110. 00:13:35.200 --> 00:13:42.480 With most of your Bibles, you can see it's a quote because they either put it in bold or they set it off as a different paragraph. 00:13:42.720 --> 00:13:46.879 So you can see that Jesus is actually quoting from the Old Testament. 00:13:47.120 --> 00:13:50.080 So Jesus himself was a careful reader of scripture. 00:13:50.240 --> 00:13:56.960 He wanted the Pharisees to look and think even more definitively about who this was and what he's for this morning. 00:14:28.080 --> 00:14:35.519 If we're going to grasp the Messiah, we want to read scripture carefully, and we need to receive the Savior completely. 00:14:37.519 --> 00:14:42.000 The Pharisees had a partially correct understanding of Messiah. 00:14:42.240 --> 00:14:46.159 They did correctly grasp that he was going to be David's son. 00:14:46.399 --> 00:14:53.600 They got the working for him, and he turned the business over to one of his sons, but he still works for the business. 00:15:55.200 --> 00:15:57.519 He wanted to give his son more responsibility. 00:15:57.759 --> 00:16:02.639 And he's getting a little older and wanted to, you know, still work but have less responsibility. 00:16:03.519 --> 00:16:07.600 Most of you hear that and you think, that's really nice. 00:16:08.639 --> 00:16:18.159 If I had a time machine and I brought a Jewish person from the world of the Bible to today, and I was trying to explain that situation to them. 00:16:18.320 --> 00:16:23.600 Well, the dad had a cabinetry shop, his son's worked for them, but now the son is the boss and the dad works for the son. 00:16:23.679 --> 00:16:28.720 If I tried to explain that to them, then? 00:19:13.519 --> 00:19:14.799 Is it a human Adonai? 00:19:14.880 --> 00:19:16.319 Is it someone else? 00:19:16.480 --> 00:19:24.079 Whoever he is, you see in verse one, David says he is my Lord, my Adonai. 00:19:24.559 --> 00:19:29.359 So Yahweh is speaking to this Lord, David's Lord. 00:19:29.519 --> 00:19:36.319 And as the psalm moves forward, we see that David's Lord is a messianic figure. 00:19:36.559 --> 00:19:38.480 He's a conquering king. 00:19:38.720 --> 00:19:44.559 But verse six says he will crush leaders over the entire world. 00:19:44.799 --> 00:19:50.240 That's an incredibly expansive reign, more than what David himself had. 00:19:50.799 --> 00:19:54.559 He's also, he's not only a king, he's a priest. 00:19:54.720 --> 00:19:56.799 In verse 4, you see that. 00:19:57.359 --> 00:20:04.720 How could Yahweh, the one true God, how could he declare anyone to be both a king and a priest? 00:20:05.359 --> 00:20:08.640 That didn't happen in the Old Testament in merely human categories. 00:20:08.880 --> 00:20:13.200 Priests and kings were two separate offices with different people. 00:20:14.240 --> 00:20:23.359 So David is writing about God, Yahweh's words and declaration to a future Messiah. 00:20:23.920 --> 00:20:32.799 And the Pharisees had read Psalm 110, but they hadn't grasped the true significance of all that was going on in Psalm 110. 00:20:32.880 --> 00:21:02.000 --> 00:21:05.039 It's a glorious portrait of the Messiah. 00:21:05.359 --> 00:21:14.160 One of the ways that we drive home great theology about the fullness of Messiah and his work is through singing. 00:21:14.480 --> 00:21:20.480 We want to sing songs like this psalm that are just rich with the truth of Jesus Christ. 00:21:21.119 --> 00:21:23.680 We teach one another through
