Welcome to the Drive In Movie Podcast. Now playing the Odyssey in Jaya. Oh, right. For One Piece. This is the podcast where Barricon and I go watch a blockbuster movie in theaters and then immediately come to the car to have that typical traditional discussion you have with your movie friends right after seeing a movie. Right. So you get the freshest takes for the biggest movies in a non-studio equipped vehicle. So anything can happen in the podcast. Exactly. And also we've been watching some more One Piece. Watching a lot of One Piece. Yeah. I'm up to episode 150 now. I watched episode 150 this morning. I'm still ahead of Michael. Yeah. How many episodes are you ahead of me? I think I finished 152. Okay. So you're not that much of it. Almost there. Yeah. I have I've had to pause because of you. Yeah. Calling Jaya an entire arc is interesting. It is an arc. It's like what it's like 140. It's like 13 episodes, maybe. But compared to like other It's still called the Jay. Compared to Alabasta, you know, it doesn't seem that long. It honestly seems like a predecessor to a different like because also Jaya starts with a ship falling out of the sky.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then they find out that there's like this island in the sky and they find this map to Skypea and all this kind of stuff. So it just seems like it's part of the Sky Island arc. Then going to Jaya seems like it's literally just part of the Sky Island arc. I said this to Dambo Tooy, and he's like, no, Jaya is its own arc. Yeah, it is. It's just weird. You would think that it would just be classified. We already know where they're going. You know what I mean? So it just seems like Jaya is like a pit stop. Even Nami's like, we can't stay here for too long. Right. Nami literally says, like, okay, we can stay here for two days max. And yet it gets its own arc. Yeah. Deserving. I think so. It's a good arc. I do like it. It's so much politics, drama. I get so much. It's exactly what I was asking for when I was watching all the filler episodes. I was like, God, after finishing Alabasta, it was so peak. And then we they gave us like 10 plus, 15 plus episodes of filler of nothing. Do you not like the One Piece filler episodes? No. Do you think you'd like them after you've watched all One Piece? Like, will you go back and rewatch the filler episodes? That is so I think we might have talked about it in the last episode of this podcast. That's something that a lot of people keep pointing out to us. Yeah, something that people like um I've heard from people that I know in person, like in real life, who have watched One Piece that the filler episodes can be nostalgic because you just get like the chemistry of the crew. Yeah, you just get it, you understand it. You have two blue lights, right? Yeah. You do? Yeah. Cool, cool, cool, cool. I just had a panic attack moment. Okay. We checked it a couple of anyway. I know. I know it. Um but yeah, where were we? What were we talking about? Uh filler. Nostalgic. Okay, yeah. So the people who have apparently caught up with One Piece, they enjoy the filler. There's even like an entire contingency of people out there who say there is no filler in One Piece. Yeah. Because if you watch the filler, then that just like, I don't know, like gives you a better, it's all it's all just like bonding and world building and all this kind of stuff. I didn't know that One Piece filler episodes were directed and written by like a completely different team. Yeah, that's why it's filler. It's not like but like, okay, when you tell me filler, I think in my head, like like Star Wars to Clone Wars the last season, right? Everybody loves the last season, but like the first six episodes of the last season has really nothing to do with anything. It's just happening. And then the last three episodes are like, okay, this is like this the actual story that we're focusing on. I always associate filler with the episodes that don't really move the plot forward. I didn't I didn't realize One Piece filler was literally filler. It's not just it's not just One Piece. Honestly, the term filler has been used kind of like too broadly recently because filler is specifically an anime phenomenon where the original creator of the manga of the comic book series, right, wrote a specific story, but for some reason the anime gets made faster. It's like Game of Thrones, where it's like the Game of Thrones is based on the books, but they were making the show, and then the show caught up with the books and then went past the books. Right, right. So it's like what they do in anime is that when they catch up with the manga, the an the animation studio will make their own episodes that the original creator of the manga did not write, is not within the story. Right. You know what I mean? Like they have complete reign to do whatever they want, and then that just buys them time while the maker of the manga churns out some more stuff so that then the anime has more canon, more source material to go off of. Would you rather that have happened? Like, would you rather like shows like Game of Thrones? But I know you're talking anime. I'm saying, would you rather that happen in like shows like Game of Thrones? Like, would you rather them still be doing filler episodes to this day while they wait for George to finish the story? Of course not. No, because it's been it's been what 10 plus years since he came out with the show. Well, George is a little bit of a special case, but like in a different scenario, maybe. How many different scenarios are there other than anime? Like how many I can't think of another case where it's like we ran out of source material. Outlander. I I haven't seen Outlander. Outlander is a very popular book series. It's a very popular popular. You missed that you. Shut up. You said popular. Why do you have to judge me all the time? I'm just telling you. Why do you have to do you get like hard correcting me? I expressed zero judgment. It felt a little judgmental. No, I was telling you how to pronounce the word. What, because you think you're better than me? No, that's just how the word's pronounced. Well, I don't it's not I'm not better than you just because I know how to speak English. Oh, what? Now so now you're being racist. No. Because I because I'm Turkish. No, I'm just I'm just telling you that certainly. English is my second language, Michael. Oh, okay. What's your first language? Turkish. Is it really? It is. So how do you say popular in Turkish? Popula. No. So what I'm hearing is you don't actually speak a language. I speak bear con. Okay. So tell me about the popular thing. What was popular? I feel bullied. No, I'm just asking. I'm asking. I feel bullied. I was trying to help you. I was constructively criticizing you. I was I was trying to, you know, improve your language skills. Well, maybe you're actually hurting my brand. Maybe I want my brand to be incorrect pronunciations. And spellings. And spellings. Well, no, I'm not spelling anything on the podcast. No, but you do on your social media. But they don't need to know that. Well, they know that you misspell things. You know what, Michael? You know what? Thousands of people see my Instagram stories, and you are always the only one who decides to say anything. There's always typos. You're the only one who ever points it out. Thousands of people are like, we're gonna let this one go. Except Michael. Yeah. But you know what? I never say I never say anything. I just do the asterisks and the correct spelling of the word. I never express any judgment. It feels judgmental. And that's on you. Michael, look me in the eye and tell me no percent of your love for me decreases with every type of. It could be like 0.001. But tell me nothing decreases. Okay, hold on. I have to prepare. I have to I have to prepare. Hold on. Okay, wait. Ask me that same question again. What no, you ask you have to ask me the question. Okay, okay, wait a minute. I gotta finish the story. Okay, look, okay. So Michael, there's this popper. Popper. Uh Popar. You're saying it differently. I don't know how to I don't know how to incorrectly say it. How do you say Popular? What is Timothy Chalamet in Dune to? What do all the Fremen call him in Dune to? Paul Strates. No, no, no. What's his title? It seemed I forgot what I forgot what it was. Lisa Al Ghaib. Lisa Ghaib. Listen al-Ghaib. Lisayan Ghaeb. Lisian Ghalib. Lisiyan Ghaib. It's different every time. I actually thought you were gonna get it for a second. Like the first time you said it, I think I was like, I think he got it. And then you just kept going. But then you made me you made me doubt my ability. Okay, say it again then. Lisian Gaib. Nope. Lisian Gaib? Lisa Lisian Ghaib. Lisa Nal Gaib. Listen, Al Ghaib.
SPEAKER_01There you go.
SPEAKER_00Listen, Al Gaïb. Now say it one more time. Listen, Al Gaib. You're getting worse. Listen now, Ghaib. Listen, Al Gaib. Listen Al Ghab. Anyway. Me and Jenks had so much fun with it. Because also, you're getting better at it. You used to be so bad. Every time we'd walk at Cinemacon, Jenks would go, say it, and I would try to say it, it would be different every time. I think you're starting to get it. But what's crazy is you've had Lisa N Al Gaib. Yes. Aha! See, now it's in my head. Yeah. Listen al-Gaib. There you go. Lisian Galib. No. No, I can't say I can't sell down. See, it has to be a very certain. You'll get it like for a second, and then you'll immediately lose it. Okay, now. Has your love for me decreased any percentage? Yeah. Absolutely. Dang it. Alright, well, what do you think of the J Ark? What do you think of Blackbeard? I haven't seen we haven't seen Blackbeard yet. Blackbeard is in the next two episodes. You actually just pissed me off a lot. You actually I'm actually pissed right now. That's a huge spoiler. I'm sorry. This is why I said I have to lead on you because I don't I I watched these One Piece episodes when I had a baby. I don't remember what happened in one episode. I was like, surely, my brain was like, surely this didn't happen to one. You said you would take you said that, okay, I'm gonna let you take the lead on this one, and then you didn't. And then you dropped the biggest bomb. I'm so sorry. What did you think of Blackbeard, Ben? It might have been you should have watched it two weeks ago. No, I shouldn't have. I've been watching ten episodes of an episode. Like for our podcast. It's been like it's been weeks. But you watched a head! I did not watch a head. We said we were gonna keep watching ten episodes a week, even while I was gonna- You said that and I disagreed with you! I said roll the clip. Roll the clip! Roll the clip idea. Roll the clip. You just spoil you just introduced a major spoiler for me that I wouldn't have seen in two episodes. I'm so sorry. I'm j I'm not you okay. What do you know? What do you know? Yeah, yeah, please let me take the lead and then fill in the. There's still a good amount. So tell me, tell me, tell me what I know. I didn't so much let this out. Okay, just tell me what's intriguing you about Won't be so far in the jark. I'm sorry. The vibe is completely ruined. I know it really is. I'm so sorry. Because now everything I gonna say, everything I'm gonna say is gonna be less of a punch than Blackbeard. Actually, no. Okay. Depending on what you said. I was gonna say I like the monkey guys. They're cool. They just got beat up by Bellamy. Um, and that sucks. But Luffy's standing on business. They found Bellamy's mark, and Luffy was like, I'm gonna run into town and beat the shit out of these guys. And Zoro because Zorro saw the mark. Zorro saw the mark, and he was like, Luffy, look at this. And then without saying a word, he was like, Do you want help? And Luffy was like, No. Like, like Zorro knew what was about to go down. Yeah. And then even then, um Nolan's descendant was like, Oh, no, don't go, don't go. And then Zoro like hands him a sword and he's like, if you want to stop him, you're gonna have to use this. Like, you know, basically saying, like, words aren't gonna stop him. And so I just thought it was so cool how much they were standing on business. When Bellamy first threw Luffy's face through the bar, and Zoro, like, he immediately had his sword at Bellamy's neck. I was like, Everyone is standing on business in this arc, and I love it. Everybody, yeah. That's the most interesting thing. Presumably, including Blackbeard. That's the most interesting thing that's happened so far. Uh well, the whole concept of the Sky Island thing. Here's something that actually bothers me. These giant biblically accurate angels appear out of nowhere and block out the sun, and they only talk about it for like 20 seconds, and then they move on, and then they're like, Oh, I need to uh we need to make it to Sky Island, and then they like kind of in passing mentioned the the giants like a couple of times after that. But really, like that would that should completely change your world perspective. Yeah. If you saw something like that. And they just kind of like sweep it under the rug, you know what I mean? It's crazy how much cooler stuff happens in the last two episodes. Whatever, man. Whatever, man. So Ace and Buggy are chilling together. There we go. Yeah. Ace and Buggy. Dude, that was that was such a like a crazy plot twist. My jaw dropped. When I saw Ace on Buggy's ship. Dude, Ace is so cool. Every time Ace is on screen, I'm like, this is actually peak. I think when I saw Ace on screen, that's when I knew I was like, oh, I am enjoying this arc. Because again, like the past couple, like the past 15 episodes or whatever, I've been like, this is bad, this is bad. Uh the Jay arc started, and I was like, this has some promise. I saw Ace on Buggy's ship, and I was like, okay, I like this arc. He's only in it for one scene so far. I've only seen him in the one scene. Yeah. He's been hunting. And Buggy has this like crazy monologue where he's like, guys, listen well. This is the most important thing I've ever said in my entire life. Whitebeard is the strongest pirate alive. He's the only guy who could go up against Goldie Roger. Uh he's the he's the guy who's closest to obtaining the One Piece. Like Buggy dropped insane Whitebeard lore. Yeah. I love I love Whitebeard so far. I haven't seen him yet. You're telling me that you've seen Whitebeard and Black. This is like ridiculous. Like he should have known better. He should have known better. Bearcon just left the podcast because he just fucked up so bad. Twice! Yeah, you you grab your package. I got a box. You wanna see what's in the box? I guess so. Because I don't want you to spoil any more One Piece for me. I'm like, I'm at like so we just had a huge conversation about spoilers. I know. And then you just dropped another massive spoiler. Alright, you ready to see what's in the box? Yeah, show me what's in the box. Pizza Hut. Oh, I'm actually mad. Oh no. Like literally, like that like like two major spoilers back to back. Well, you don't know anything about that. Like it's you fu like now I know to expect them. Okay. I am sorry. I genuinely am sorry. Okay. I did not mean to spoil it for you. I've had a lot going on. Yeah, but you like you did it once, and then after that you should be like, okay, now I need to be aware not to spoil anymore. And then you did it again! I know. I know it's been a it's been a rough. I haven't been sleeping, Michael. Give me a break. Okay, open your box. Open my box. Okay, what do you think this is? I don't know what you ordered. What are you talking? I don't know. Oh, this is so cool. Tell me. What is the greatest TV show of all time? One Piece. Besides One Piece. Breaking Bad. Okay, what is one of our upcoming what is the TV show that's currently happening? Invincible. Invincible. Wow. Oh, it's signed. Yeah, by the goat. By the goat. From Pristine Auction.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Pretty cool, right? Very cool. Yeah, very cool for the collection. I'm very excited. And it's on brand. It's beat up Mark. It's on brand. It's beat up Mark. Mark always gets a bit more. He's always getting beat up. Exactly. And the coolest thing, again, I got this on Pristine Auction. This isn't an ad, by the way, but I did get this on Pristine Auction and I got it for less than $100. Wow. My winning bid was $66. It was almost $67. So pretty cool steals on Pristine Auction if you want to check it out for yourself. That 100% sounds like an ad placement. It does, but like it is, I mean, to get that for less than 100 bucks is pretty cool. Because I know if he ever does cons, like New York Comic Con or something, I'll never meet him. Check your camera. Because you just hit the camera. Good shout. I will never meet him for less than that amount. Like for more I'll never meet him for that amount. It'll always be like 150 bucks at least. Sure. I mean he's a little bit more than a little bit of a backseat to a celebrity. Yeah. I'm worried about like making more noise and like hitting the cameras and stuff like that. Okay. Uh you want some one piece, would you rather? Yeah, sure. I'll hit you with it. This has been a very chaotic episode, and I apologize. It's alright. Um alright. Would you rather, One Piece edition, would you rather have Luffy's gum gum power to stretch the ability or Zorro's swordsmanship? Oh, the uh double fruit ability. I would rather have Zoro's swordsmanship, to be honest. Because I grew up always like loving swords. And to be like the greatest swordsman in the world is feels a little bit more unique and special than having double fruit ability. Yeah, but to have his swordsman ability, you have to dedicate your life to the craft in practice. For Luffy's gum gum ability, you just have to eat a fruit. Yeah, but if we're just getting to pick one, you're just like bestowed if one or the other. Yeah, if like I'd rather have the swordsmanship. I would rather have the gum gum fruit because it's also not just combat. Like so the swordsmanship is specifically for combat. The gum gum fruit, like it gives you mobility. Yeah, but you also would get Zoro's aura. Oh, it comes with the aura? I mean, sure, if you're the greatest swordsman of all time, I'm taking Zoro's. You take the aura. I'm taking Zoro's ability. Alright. Um, would you rather have Chopper as your doctor or Sanji as your uh your cook? Oh, that's a great question. I'm I'm picking Sanji. I'd rather eat than be healed, to be honest. How often do I think? Food would heal me. Yeah. Every time I go to the doctor to get my physical done, they're like, you're fine. But that also means like you're hanging out with one of them at all times. Yeah. So would you rather hang out with Sanji or Chopper? Sanji's still cool. He's so cool. I would rather hang out with Chopper, but at the same time, if I had someone making meals for me, like three meals a day, and they're all five-star restaurant level. Yeah, I think I'm picking Sanji as my personal cook instead of Chopper as my personal doctor. That that makes sense. I make it makes sense. But uh yeah, Sanji as a chef is my pick. Yeah. Uh would you rather explore Skype or Alabasta? I I don't know what Skypea looks like. But like you know the concept of it. Yeah. I don't know how large it is. I don't know. At least in Alabasta, I know it's like I guess better the devil you know, right? Yeah. I guess. Like I'd rather Alabasta looks cool, and I have no idea if Skypea is gonna be as cool. Cool. I'm not gonna speak further on that, just in case. Uh would you rather have to defeat Arlong or Crocodile? Oh, Arlong. Arlong? Arlong. Wait, that's just like Arlong is like objectively weaker. Yeah, but like if you, Michael, are fighting him, are you more intimidated by Crocodile or a guy who has a little sawfish for a nose? I think Arlong is scarier, to be honest. Yeah, but he's just he's if you have to beat one of them in a fight, you have a better chance at least against Arlong. Maybe. Like I feel I feel like objectively, like one's better than the other. Like one's stronger than the other. So you're picking Arlong? Yeah. Okay. Would anybody pick Crocodile instead? I don't know. Crocodile feels less scary to me. But it's just it's just intimidation factor. It is just if I'm less intimidated, I feel like I have more belief. So you would fight Crocodile instead of Arlong. Right. Even knowing that Crocodile. I feel like I couldn't even punch. Because I feel like I couldn't even like punch Arlong. If I punched Arlong, you would just get stronger. And his teeth would just get stronger. If you knocked out his teeth? Yeah, well, I have a strong punch. I'm gonna knock out his teeth if I land a punch. Okay, so you because your go-to move is knocking out your opponent's teeth. Yes, I would be cooked against Arlong. Yeah, got it. Last one. If you had to sacrifice a straw hat, would you rather sacrifice Nami or Usopp? You see, Usopp is growing on me, actually. But I still would sacrifice him for Nami. Yeah. I think that's the right choice. I I I hate to say it, but I was sacrifice. Here's a would you rather, would you rather sacrifice Sanji or Usopp? Usopp. You would sacrifice Usopp? Do we not just establish I care about food? Well, I mean like that's different versus like who you care of care about as a character. You know what I mean? I think I think if I was like, if one of them unfortunately were to die in the show right now. You'd be more sad about Usopp. I would be more sad about Usopp than Sanji. I think that's like typical. Like you're usually sadder about the weaker characters going. Yeah, and also just like he I feel like he's got a stronger personality, you know. Um he's he's the comedic relief. True kind of. They're all funny, but he's the comedic relief. That's the that's the weird thing. One Piece is like a genuinely funny show. I feel like a lot of times when I'm watching anime, they'll do like a funny scene. And it's like lighthearted, but it does it's not funny. It's personality funny, you know? Sure. Do you not know what I mean by that? It's like these characters like it's funny, it's funny, it doesn't feel forced because it's like part of their personality. They're like this outgoing, like goofy, funny like characters. So that's what I mean by personality funny. Yeah, that's that's true, actually. Yeah, see I cook like Sanji, who I would not sacrifice. Yeah, okay. Go ahead and hype yourself up after I just agreed with you. Yeah. Um yeah, I do have a a little bit of a one-piece theory though. Hit me with your theory. Unfortunately, my one piece theory is like immediately started becoming correct. But like at the beginning of the Sky Pea arc, it hasn't fully like panned out yet, but they're already like kind of dropping hints. But at the beginning of the Skypea arc, I said in um my so I don't accidentally speak. Okay. In my recording, like uh, like, you know, as I'm watching the episode, I said I was like, I think that at some point in the show, the going Mary is gonna be like completely destroyed, and they're gonna either have to completely like switch gears and get like a whole new ship, or basically do like a going Mary too, like uh the ship of Theseus, basically. And already in this arc, they have spent a good amount of screen time showing the damage that the Going Mary has taken on their various adventures and them repairing the ship. It's become like a big factor in the plot of this arc actually is the fact that the going Mary is getting really beat up and we we have to um reinforce it so that it can actually get to Skypea. So it's like I do I do think eventually, and also I was like when I was uh saying this theory, I said, and it's gonna feel like a character death. Like when the Going Mary is destroyed or lost or something, it's gonna feel like a character death. Um because it's like it's such uh an important part of the straw hats. And in this arc, Luffy said the going Mary is basically a crew member. And I was like, that's what I just said. So that's my fan theory. Um and honestly, at this point, it's even not even that much of a theory, because it's at least half correct. Because it is like it got split in half during this arc. They're probably gonna replace it, but it is getting destroyed. Is the is the going, Mary, like the ship? If it is like completely rebuilt, yeah, but like some of the pieces are still the original. Here we go. No, I'm I'm just asking You're doing the Ship of Thaddeus thing. Well, yeah, so I'm asking Theseus. Well, I'm just asking, like, is that considered the same ship or a different ship? People have been asking this question for thousands of years. And I'm asking you for your question. We're gonna we're gonna solve the ship of Theseus problem right here on the drive and movie podcast. Yeah, it's a drive in movie podcast. That feels pretty simple. If you take a boat and you replace pretty much every piece with new pieces, is it the original boat? It's about the majority. I say it so you think the the majority of the pieces, but you think if you replace most of the pieces if I built if I built a ship that's a hundred pieces, 99 pieces are the same, but one piece is one piece, uh one piece is you know, one is like the original. Yeah. Here's a good here's a good example. The Golden State Warriors built a brand new basketball stadium, but there was in the old stadium, Dirk Nowitzki, my personal hero, took a chair, threw it on the wall, put a hole in the wall, and then signed it, and then they put like a plaque to like we believe. They took that portion of the wall and put it in the new stadium. So is it the original stadium? No. Okay. Therefore, it can't be it only has one piece for the state has one piece of the original stadium. Okay. My thing is if they are consistently using the ship to travel and they're just replacing it piece by piece, that counts as the same ship. So there was never a moment where, like, for example, for that stadium when it was rebuilt, they completely shut down the stadium for a while, replaced all the pieces, and then that one original piece they brought back in. If you're on the going Mary and like a you know, some pieces of wood get knocked off, and then you replace those pieces of wood, and then that happens a bunch of times, but the ship is constantly in use, that's the same ship. That's still the going Mary. Okay, it's the spirit of the ship. Gotcha. The soul is what matters to the ship. Exactly. That's beautiful. Yeah. Um, speaking of ships and traveling. Yeah. We ready for the Odyssey? We Oh, sure. Let's get into it. Yeah? Yeah. Yeah. Okay, cool. Uh, Michael. Yeah, how many Michaels are you giving the Odyssey? Out of ten Michaels, I'm giving the Odyssey nine. Out of ten Michaels, I'm getting the Odyssey after seeing it in IMAX in the IMAX 70mm twice, I'm giving it nine Michaels. We're the same. We're the same. We're the same. We're the same. It's really good. It is very good. I think, I do think the middle-ish. Some parts of it is hard on rewatch, but that final act is so good no matter how many times you see it, I think. Yeah. Honestly, I had a hard time getting into it. Like the the beginning of the Odyssey was rough for me. Really? Yeah. I didn't like the jumping around. Yeah. Okay, it's we're here, like um Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway are like in the present, but then they're talking about Troy at the very beginning, but then we see um Odysseus with Calypso, and then we go back to Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway, and then we go back to the beginning of Troy, and then we go back to Calypso, and I'm like, let's just I I'm okay with maybe like two different timelines where it's like there's the present and then there's the past, but when you introduce three separate times, I understand what's happening. I just don't like it. I'm like, it at least we can go back and forth between the same two things, like an A plot and a B plot. Right. But like it thankfully it doesn't say like that the entire time. Exactly. And that's what I was like for the beginning for me. I was like, I had a hard time getting into the story because it didn't feel like a story. Gotcha. It felt like what you were worried about. Exactly. Interesting. Okay. Okay, but it got better. Yeah, yeah. It got better. Uh what did you like about the Odyssey in general? Um, I th Anne Hathaway, honestly. Anne Hathaway. Anne Hathaway. She's the Anne Hathaway is the only person from the Odyssey. Mind you, I think everyone was tremendous. Anne Hathaway is the only person I think who has a chance at winning an Oscar. I think she stole the show, which is crazy because half of the industry is in this movie. Yeah. And I and I think she ate them up. She's just it's just a very like I I think she moged them. I wouldn't say it's like a very layered performance because she's kind of in the same like emotional sphere. I think she shows a bunch of emotions. I think she shows a bunch of different emotions. No, but they're caked behind the same, like panic, the same anxiety. They're no, they're all caked behind the same scenario. She's like she's in the same place the entire time until the very end. And I'm not and I'm not saying that's like a bad thing. She does it incredibly well. So I'm saying like her she was so good. Because normally for me, I'm like, if I'm giving somebody an Oscar, I want to see different emotional spheres. Like, I don't want you to be in the same emotional place the entire time of the movie because I want to see how you get out of it, how you get into it, and all that. She's in the same place, but she does it masterfully. You don't think you could say the same thing about all the characters? Like I just said the only one I think could is going to win an Oscar is Anne Hathaway. Yeah, okay. So but yeah, so because all of the characters are in the same emotional sphere for the entire movie, you think that kind of eliminates all of them from the possibility of an Oscar, with the exception that Anne Hathaway does it so well? No, I don't think like I don't think that's why they're not gonna get an Oscar. I think like I said, they're they all did incredible. I just think the only one who really like pushed a needle and to be like, wow, that was like really impactful was Anne Hathaway. Yeah. It's not to say like they were bad because they were incredible, but it's not like I just think like she was clearly at a different level. Does that make sense? Yeah, I agree with you. I I also think that the movie had some parts of it turn into a horror movie. Yeah, the Cersei sequence was crazy. Yeah. The uh it was so interesting because that's not like how it's done in the original story, like that was a choice to make that like a horrific like sequence. Because in the story, I mean she like feeds them, she's like in this palace, and she turns them into pigs, and then Odysseus has to get like a potion from Hermes, or he's gifted a potion from Hermes, and that's like the antidote. Uh, but this like making her like this witch in like a hut on the hill and like the physical practical transformation insane, and then she turns them back. Like Odysseus convinces her to turn them back. Yeah, okay, yeah, crazy, so good. And then the Cyclops practical The Cyclops was also very horrific, yeah. And practical. It was like there was like monster horror elements in this movie, there were body horror elements in this movie. Because the the Cyclops isn't even like the only monster that you see. There's also like the the Hydra or whatever that's like the cherubidus that's picking up the people that's gonna be. Oh, that's Sicilla. Sicilla. Sicilla? Yeah, okay. Um I think that's Sicilla. There's the sirens, which aren't really monsters, but I mean I really like the detail though that you didn't hear the siren song at all. Yeah, you just kind of you hear like a song. Because historically, Odysseus is the only one who's ever heard the siren song, so I'm glad that he kept it that way. That's kind of a cool detail. There's nothing that they could have put in the movie, like there's no actual sound effect or like song that they could have put in the movie that would have the same effect on us as it did on Odysseus. Correct. Like, so it would have, if he did, like if we actually did hear the siren song, I do think it would have taken away from the uh uh the depth of it, I guess. You know what I mean? Yeah, there's some details. We would have been like, oh, Odysseus is being dramatic. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. There's some details I think are really cool about the Odyssey in general, with like the differences between the text and the movie. So, like, some details, for example, Athena is typically disguised as I think famously three characters, right? She's disguised as an old beggar, she's disguised as mentor, and then she disguises Odysseus. Um, they obviously don't have that reveal in the Odyssey movie, but what they do have is Tom Holland every time he says to somebody, hey, you have wise eyes, Athena's eyes, that per he only says that to people who traditionally in the original text was actually Athena in disguise, yeah, or some as something she was involved with. That was really cool. Also, for example, Calypso on her island, Zeus tells Calypso to let Odysseus go. In the movie, that doesn't happen, but when she's realizing that it's time for him to stop eating the lotus flower, it was followed by thunderstrikes. So she could be being told by Zeus, and we just don't hear it. Right. I thought that was so cool. It's a lot like the gods' involvements are a lot less direct in this movie versus in the original story. Right. Like their involvement is more implied. Right. Okay. Which makes sense because that's kind of how like people like in real life, that's kind of like when stuff happens and people attribute it to divine intervention, that's what it looks like. Exactly. Instead of like a literal figure coming down and like giving you something. Right. So I I like that take on it, frankly. Do you think what do you think about the ending of the Odyssey? Do you think it's real? Oh, yeah. I refuse to think that like Odysseus just died and like the ending is like some sort of vision or something like that. You and I talked about this uh after the movie briefly, about like how maybe it's like just like a fantasy basically about you know of a happy ending. But I I don't like the idea of I just watch that whole movie and Odysseus finally makes it home and then right at the front door he dies. Like I I prefer I'll take the happy ending. You don't like tragics? I'll take the happy tragic endings. Not that one, not when you're so close. That's fair. Yeah, that's fair. Uh man, visually, the Odyssey is just so it was just so good. Like, do you think it was like worth like the IMAX 70mm experience? Yeah, absolutely. Because also, this is the only movie that's ever been filmed 100% for IMAX. This is it's a historical film. Absolutely. And the only way that you can watch it in like the I don't want to say like the best format that it was intended for. You know what I mean? It's like that honestly It's not necessarily the best form, it's the only format it was intended for. 70mm IMAX. The problem is that there's so few people are going to be able to experience it that way. People are you and I were talking about like are people actually gonna fly across the country or drive across the country to go watch this movie? And then like you're like, I don't think people are gonna do that for our screen tonight, and then we go in and we sit next to people who are from Kansas. Who came in from Kansas just to watch the movie and some of Kansas City? Okay, Kansas City. That's Missouri. Okay, still. I'm just not from the state. Nope. They're from Kansas City, Missouri. So stupid. Why would you name your city after a different state? I don't know. Guys, change your name. Yeah, why do you have to be Kansas City? This feels like imposter syndrome. Yeah. Seriously. They are right. They are right next to Kansas. Even worse. Yeah. It's like we wish we were you. Yeah. Yeah. That'd be like if New York City. The grass isn't greener on the other side, Kansas City. Kansas is still Kansas. Maybe it is green over there. Kansas has some pretty green grass out here. Um that but uh that'd be like if New York City was in Jersey. You know what I mean? It's like right across the river. Fighting words. Fighting words. Well, that's just what that's just what Kansas City is like.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00You know what I mean? Do you did you hear that we are not going to get another Christopher Nolan movie for probably at least three years? That's not honestly, that's not that long in the grand scheme of things. You know what I mean? Yeah. I think it's been like three years since Oppenheimer. Exactly. Yeah. Like it makes sense for him to like he he takes his time, he figures out what he wants to make, he writes it, he gets the funding for it, he he collects the best people in the industry, and then he then he does God's work. Is there give him three years? That's fine. Do you think you would see any Christopher Nolan movie like no questions asked? Like, no. If it's like a story that like you think is really terrible, but Christopher Nolan directed it, do you think you'd still be excited? No. I d because honestly, I don't think that all of his movies are bangers. I j like, I don't think that like well, he does have a lot of bangers, and his bangers are great. But I don't think every single one of his movies are a hit. Do you want to rank them?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Alright. So we're only gonna rank the Christopher Nolan movies based off the ones that we've actually seen. Okay. Because we have not seen every Christopher Nolan movie. So uh we're gonna have we have a pull from Odyssey, Oppenheimer, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, the Batman trilogy, and Tenet. Okay, we're doing the Batman trilogy as like a whole thing. No. Oh, we're ranking each of them individually? The three movies. That's that's gonna be tough for me to like uh separate. It shouldn't be that tough the other. It really shouldn't be that tough. It's gonna it's gonna be though. I'm just kinda crazy. I'm telling you right now it's gonna be tough for me. Alright, okay, we're gonna start with um What do you think's your at your bottom? Probably Tenant. Or Dunkirk. Those are my bottom two for sure. I don't know which is Tenet and Dunkirk. Dunkirk are your bottom two? Yeah. Let's see. That's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine movies. Because, I mean, all the other ones are are I like the other ones. When I when I said earlier, I don't think every single Christopher Nolan movie is a hit. Those are the two that I was referring to. Okay, well, okay, give your so which what's nine and what's eight? Let's I I honestly think tenant is probably nine because you can't watch that movie once. Right. You have to watch that movie at least twice to fully understand what's happening in it and like where the characters are and when, and why they're doing what they're doing, and who told who what at what time period and if they're in the past or the future. And so I because of that, I've only seen the movie once, and so I'm gonna have to put that in my bottom one. I agree at number nine for me, it's tenant. I think it's doing too much. Oh, wait, is Inception on there? Inception's on here. Okay, good, good. Uh, I agree that Tenant is doing too much. I'm putting that at number nine. At number eight, I'm putting Batman Begins. Oh, whoa, okay. I really don't care about the first Batman movie. Like, it's still a good movie, but I'm like, uh.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Like, it's just like I don't really ever want to re-watch it. I think in my life I've seen Batman Begins three times. You're putting Batman Begins below Dunkirk. Yes. Okay. Dunkirk would probably be seven for me. Okay. I really I did enjoy Dunkirk. Like, from Batman Begins on, I enjoyed all of his movies. Alright. I'm I'm probably switching those two. I think I'm do I'm doing bottom is tenant, and then Dunkirk, and then we can go Batman Begins. Not because it's bad, but I think I just like the rest of his better. Yeah. So what so what's your si uh sixth spot then? Okay, how many? If nine, so nine, tenant, eight, Dunkirk, seven, Batman begins. So now you're at six. Let me see the list here, because we have eliminated the same three movies. Yes. Oh, you don't want me to see something. Okay. No. Um, oh gosh, that actually is tough. It might I think it's Oppenheimer for me. Really? Oppenheimer is the. I liked it less than a lot of people. So okay, my number six is The Dark Knight Rises. Really? Yes. Great movies, but the next five movies I think are fantastic. Exactly. That's the problem with ranking the Christopher Nolan movies. Yeah. Um, yeah, I'm going, I'm going Oppenheimer and then the Dark Knight Rises. Okay, so I went Dark Knight Rises and then number five, I have Oppenheimer? Or no? No, at number five, I have Inception. Really? Yeah. I like Inception. I like Inception too. I like it. But I think uh yeah, I think I'm putting that number five, and then my number four is going to be Oppenheimer. Okay. Um I think my number four. Gosh. Now it's getting spicy. Okay. I still have Odyssey, Inception, Interstellar, and um The Dark Knight. Because I've done Yeah, I've done four so far. I think I'm gonna have to put Interstellar. Whoa! Really? Yeah. Wow, okay. Because then do you want me to do my top three? Well, let me give you let me give you my four. Okay. My number four. So what I have is I have to skip something in here. I have. Let me see the list now. Let's see. This is probably ranking nine movies and not having like anything to like write down on. Is that like we're losing track of what we put? Oh, I'm not losing track. I'm just like, I'm deciding what I want to do here. So I have the Odyssey, Oppenheimer. Oh yeah, no, my number four is Oppenheimer. Okay. Yeah, my number four is Oppenheimer. My top three. Top three. I think I'm gonna go three the Odyssey, two the Dark Knight, one Intercellar. Okay. For me, I'm going three Inception, two Odyssey, one the Dark Knight. Good choice. Good choice. I like the Odyssey a lot, but I you know what? Like, I still think the Dark Knight is probably his best movie. I've seen it so many times and I love it every single time. And it's also it's still historic. I know The Odyssey was like historically the first movie entirely filmed for IMAX, but but The Dark Knight was the first movie filmed for IMAX, period. Um and Inception, I I I think we're pretty different on Inception, but I love Inception. I really enjoyed Inception, I really did. Um I just think I liked the top three. Like, because I love Greek mythology. I think Oppenheimer is such a tremendous film. Let me see if I can do my list again. Let me see if I can get my list from start to finish. Okay. I'm going The Dark Knight, The Odyssey, Inception, Interstellar, Oppenheimer, um Batman Beg no, uh The Dark Knight Rises, then I think Batman begins. Yes. And then you and then uh Dunkirk Tenet. Yes. Is that nine? Is that all of them? Okay. That's all of them. Cool. I think that was my list. All right. You might have switched the Dark Knight Rises and Oppenheimer. Cool. Well, I have some more. Would you rather?
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00For the Odyssey. List out list out yours from start to finish. Oh, from mine from start to finish from bottom to top or top to bottom? Whichever way you want to do it. Okay, so mine was uh Tenet, Batman begins, Dark Knight, no, tenet, Batman begins, Dunkirk, Dark Knight rises, uh Inception, Oppenheimer, the Odyssey, Dark Knight, Interstellar. Nice. Bang. Alright. Odyssey, would you rather? Odyssey would you rather? Yeah. Would you rather be Penelope waiting for 20 years or Odysseus surviving for 20 years away? I'd rather be Penelope. You'd rather be Penelope. I'd rather be Penelope. But like Odysseus. But like Odysseus didn't know it's been he didn't know it was like 20 years. And then as soon as you found out he got back. So you really have like seven years mentally less time. And seven of those years you're with Trelicia Rome. But that sucks. Having lost time? Like that's seven years of your life that you like lost. But he but he knows how close she is to getting home. Penelope had nothing. It was 20 years of pure darkness. Yeah, but she has her son and she has her kingdom and her throne. That she doesn't really want. She lives in a palace filled with people who suck. Oh, Disney's is struggling to survive every single day. He's starving to death.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00He's living on the ocean. But he he's he has the control. He doesn't have a roof over his head. He's homeless. He has to control in that state. He had a roof with Calypso. He had no control. He had a roof with Calypso. Can't believe he lived in a tent for seven years. That's not a roof. That's like he had like a straw thatch. Okay. Would you rather spend seven years on Calypso's island or one year under Cersei's spell? So you're basically like a pig or whatever whatever whatever animal lives with inside you. I think I could be an animal for a year. Yeah, it'd be kind of interesting. Yeah, if you turn back into a human after a year, I could be an animal for a year. I think I agree. But seven years with Calypso. Some of them were like, one of them was like a lion, one of them was, you know, a panther. But like there was a deer. You don't have to be physically. Is Calypso like feeding me and like in love with me and like taking care of me? Yeah, but you don't remember any of it? But like you don't you don't need to. You just have seven years in like that peaceful bubble. Yeah, but of like just being happy. But again, then when you get out of it, because presumably you get out of it. Yeah, but but then you don't remember. In this scenario, I imagine I don't have like Alice and August waiting for me. You know, but Odysseus did. Odysseus did. But you would have to. But this is like you. This is you. You're not like this is you. You would have your wife and son. You would have your wife and son waiting for you for seven years. Because that's what Odysseus had. So it's like, this is this is Odyssey, would you rather? Okay, okay, fine. Uh I don't know. I think I'd rather be I think I'd rather be taken care of by Calypso. And you would just lose seven years of your life. I guess so, yeah. Um What do you get out of that? I get Like literally you have no memory of it. It's as if it's as if it didn't happen. Yeah, but then your love, you lose all your memories of it, and you lose it so that you go back to your wife and son. Wait, he he doesn't lose his memories of Calypso in that time. Of the seven years he spent there? No. Oh, he remembers all seven years of it? Yeah. Oh. Oh, okay. So seven years is a long time. It is a long time, but again, it's seven years. Of being like loved and pampered. That is true. That is true. That's pretty good. And you're and you're kind of getting drugged out. Yeah, and it's just like you're just tripping for seven years. Yeah, that's actually. And this beautiful woman just loves you. Yeah, that's actually. No, you're making a good point. I don't understand what the problem is here. Well, though the way that I was thinking about it was that you're losing all your memories and no, you just lose your memory of those of everything that happened before. So you don't know you're like messing, you don't know like you're what you're missing. I thought it was like a Percy Jackson type Lotus, where it was like literally like you spend like years in the casino and you come out and you're like, I thought it was like But they remember what happened in the casino. Yeah, but it only felt like a day. So it's like I lost so much time of my life. Like I'm seven years older, right? And I I thought I was only like a month older. It could be. I mean, I think it could I I think it is like that. Because isn't that what like the Lotus is based on? You don't know how much time is like past. Like, isn't that what the Percy Jackson Lotus is based on? Not necessarily calypso. I mean, there's lotus eaters which weren't in the movie.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00I imagine that's connected. I actually don't know the history of the lotus flower. Okay, because it's both Greek mythology. Right. So right. Um I might take Calypso. If you get to remember being loved and pampered and being on drugs. Yeah. Alright, last one. Would you rather have to fight all the suitors in Odysseus' power in Odysseus's uh hall like 1v1? Or would you rather fight in the Trojan War? So would you rather fight all of Odysseus' suitors 1v1 just by yourself like Odysseus did, or fight in the Trojan War? Here's the thing, all of Penelope's suitors were they weren't veterans, which is why Odysseus could just tear through them. Like they were the soft guys who got left behind when everyone else went to war. Right. So which means that like, well, no. It was a lottery, remember? What do you mean? It was a lottery system. Yeah, but then but then it's like all the people like who grew up, like who went to the Trojan War and survived, they are now so much stronger than the people who were left behind. I guess. Because also a lot of them were taken as when they were children. Sure. So it's like that's why when Odysseus came back, all those guys had never experienced war, didn't have combat experience, and he could just like tear through them. So it's like on it's it was probably easier fighting all of those suitors off than fighting in the Trojan War. Maybe, maybe. Because a bunch I mean, a bunch of people died in the Trojan War. You know what I mean? Yeah, but I feel like more people well, I don't know. That's it's perspective. Like we saw a lot of people survive the Trojan War but then die on the journey home. Yeah. So I don't know. I do you think you could take on 1v1 all the suitors? I don't know if I could take a pacifist for so long. I don't know if I could take on armed and uh armored armies. But potentially if you're in the Trojan War, you have to like fight like maybe one or two people and focus on, and then maybe you can go hide. But if you're like 1v1, an entire hall full of suitors, like all their focuses on. They don't have armor, they don't have weapons. They got weapons. Yeah, but after you killed a bunch of them. Yeah, then he had spears sticking out of him. Do you think you have the strength to like survive spears? Yeah, but well, he had armor too. Remember, like, because his shirt and stuff started coming off, he had like the so the spears weren't like all the way in him. Like they hit his armor and presumably protected a lot of him, which is why he survived. Or did you survive? That's the I'm not I'm not entertaining that. I'm gonna take what we saw on screen as the real ending. Okay. Um yeah, I I still think I would fight the unarmed, unarmored, no combat experience suitors. I would do that so I don't have to I would rather take one potential hour of like stress first ten years of fighting actual soldier. It this the Trojan War itself though wasn't that. 10 years, yeah, but then it took them an additional ten years to get back. So that's okay, yeah. Yeah exactly. Alright. So we are we are the same. You were trying to convince me not to take that off. Yeah, we were the same on that. I just wanted to know what you truly felt. Yeah. Um do you have any closing thoughts on the Odyssey? No, I thought it was good. I I was expecting a 10 out of 10. So I got a 9 out of 10. But it was a 9 out of 10. So I don't think it was a perfect movie. Is it your number one movie of the year? Over Project Hell Mary? That's the that actually is the question. Is it better than Project Hell Mary? I don't know, actually. They're close. I think they're both I think they're both nine out of tens. They are both nine out of ten. I gave them both nine out of ten. Interesting. Maybe you gotta rewatch them both. Exactly. So it's tough for me to say if it's if it's the best movie of the year. It's at least in the top three. Project Hell Mary. Doddsy. Yeah. Uh well for you it's probably obsession. No? It's not obsession. It's Toy Story 5. Toy Story 5. Interesting. Okay, I uh I think Send Help probably is out of my. Oh, okay, okay. It might be out of my top three now. It might replace Send Help. Okay. We've talked about our top threes uh on the show before, but um Well, I think that's our episode. I think that's our episode too. It's cool. And you know what? We're only halfway through the year. We got more bangers. We got so many more bangers. We still have Spider-Man, Dune, Doomsday. Yeah. Sort of three like Spider-Man like next next week. Hunger Games. Yeah, we have Hunger Games, we have Playface. I'm excited. It's gonna be a crazy year for films. Good year. Good year. Well, thank you guys for driving in with us. Thank you.
