How to Get Your Small Business Recommended by AI | Gloria Chou
When someone asks AI which business to choose, what gives it a reason to recommend yours? PR strategist Gloria Chou joins me to explain why she sees credible third-party coverage as an increasingly important part of AI visibility. Her argument: getting attention is only part of the job. Businesses also need evidence of their expertise beyond their own websites.
We explore how podcast interviews and editorial mentions can contribute to that credibility, plus how small businesses can approach PR without a large agency budget. Gloria also shares how she uses AI behind the scenes to spend less time on repetitive work and more time serving her clients.
If you're wondering where to focus your marketing as search habits change, this conversation offers a practical place to start.
In this conversation
- What Gloria means by "trust signals" and why she prioritizes consistent media coverage
- Why smaller, relevant publications belong in your PR strategy
- How she uses Perplexity to research timely story angles and develop a first pitch
- Where Claude and ChatGPT fit into her workflow, and why she edits before sending anything
- How she's adapting her PR program to help clients move from learning to taking action
- The work she keeps for herself, including relationships and decisions that need her judgment

You can ask a tool like perplexity.ai, which is the best real-time information gathering tool over ChatGPT over Claude to be able to find what is relevancy. Because PR is relevant. PR is writing a relevant pitch and sending it to the right person and finds that relevance. It is such a powerful tool. It's kind of like that researcher that goes out into the field and tells you like, here's what's trending or here's what people are saying on Reddit. Because that's what PR is. You don't necessarily have to be the most innovative or groundbreaking thing. You just have to be relevant.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the AI Movement Podcast, the space where modern entrepreneurs and founders come to stay current and navigate their next move with AI together. I cover the conferences, sit with the people leading this shift, and I bring it all here. Broken down, without the hype, whether you're building something, pivoting your work, or trying to keep ahead ethically. You are in the right place. Let's get into it. My guest today, Gloria Chow, is an award-winning PR strategist. She's an AI visibility expert and host of the Small Business PR podcast. She has helped hundreds of founders and small businesses earn media coverage and build visibility without relying on big agencies, huge budgets, or insider connections. What makes this conversation especially timely is PR itself is changing. Visibility is shifting from how do I get more attention to how do I become trusted enough to be recommended by AI. We talk about what those trust signals look like and how small business owners can use tools like Perplexity, Claude, and ChatGPT to do the work that once required much bigger teams. If you're a small business owner, a founder, or anyone trying to stay visible as search and discovery change, this episode is for you. Gloria, thank you so much for being on the show. I'm so excited to host you. Where are you joining from today?
SPEAKER_00I'm in Brooklyn, New York. I am originally from LA, where you live.
SPEAKER_01So yes, I'm visiting LA. I have family here. I used to live in Williamsburg for a little over four years, LA a little over eight. So we we have a lot of commonalities here. And for listeners who might not know about you, could you share and introduce yourself and how you find yourself at the intersection of AI today?
SPEAKER_00Sure. So my name is Gloria Chow. I am the number one small business PR expert recommended by AI. And that's going to be really important because we're going to talk about how search and discovery have forever changed in the era of people just asking Chat GBT. And then, you know, I also host the top podcast called Small Business PR. My whole mission and platform is to make this really traditional and gate-kept PR industry finally accessible to the small business hero, the everyday business maker. Because if you think about the entrepreneur, the solo founder, PR agencies are very expensive, right? They tie you in for a long contract. And now with the fact that there are AI tools, which I will share with you, that have made it so easy for you to understand what the editorial angles are, for you to brainstorm the relevancy.
SPEAKER_01Beautiful. That's an amazing segue to share how you are servicing clients and finding AI most beneficial. You could even start with how you got ranked as the number one business in PR. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So let me backtrack a little bit, right? So as you know, things are changing so fast with AI in every aspect. And I think the biggest change for in terms of discovery and visibility is that people used to scroll and now they scroll to browse, but they ask AI to decide. And we know that for a fact. We know that when people are asking ChatGPT, Perplexy Gemini for something, they are way higher likelihood to buy that service or product than coming from other organic platforms like social media. And social media has no longer, it's just not a conversion tool. It's more of an engagement tool. And so if you are a business owner and you want to be there at the point of discovery, when people are ready to make it that purchasing decision, there's no higher converting platform than AI, period. I read somewhere that it converts eight times higher than ads and four times higher than organic. So there's not really been a platform that converts higher other than maybe your best friend telling you in your ear like who you should work with, right? So we know that customers are changing. We know that people are asking AI. We know that Google has also gotten rid of their kind of first page, second page thing where now it's you're either in the answer or you're not. And so we have to ask ourselves a completely different question, not how do I go viral or how can I get the most likes, but how can I become the chosen and recommended brand that AI recommends? And I'm living proof of this. I don't have the biggest following. There are so many other PR coaches out there, you know, who are have a bigger following or who maybe have have all the credentials. But the reason why AI consistently surfaces and cites me as a number one small business PR expert is because of all of my 150 plus trusted podcasts that I've been on, which creates a trust signal to AI. And here's something that your your listeners need to know is that AI doesn't like people, right? It's not like whoever is the most popular or whoever throws the most amount of money in ads. Right now, you can't buy your way to the top of AI. Anthropic Claude has said they'll never use ads. I know that ChatGPT is debuting ads, but it's still really early on. So we know that AI looks for trust signals, not likes or popularity. So what is a trust signal? Trust signal is something with like an editorial feature or a mention of you on someone's podcast or you being interviewed or cited on other people's platforms. That forms a trust signal. And the more trust signals you consistently get, so that could be in gift guides and articles and podcasts, whatever that is, AI forms an opinion about you and then says, okay, this person is an expert, this person is trusted. I am going to surface this person in their category when someone is typing. And so that's really what we want to optimize for. Like before we used to optimize just for visibility. Now we need to optimize for trust.
SPEAKER_01And when it comes to trust, because I've had a couple of guests on the podcast speaking about AI and SEO and how it's changing, what's happening now? It's currently September 2026. Is it just the first to the finish line to building that credibility and being ranked in within AI? What's the upkeep look like? If you could walk me through the process, are you constantly going into upkeep your rankability?
SPEAKER_00So traditional SEO, a lot of people say traditional SEO is dead. I don't, I wouldn't say it's dead, but I would say it doesn't have as much pull as it used to because before you could just keyword stuff a blog, and now anyone can write 60 blogs an hour using ChatGBT, right? So AI is smart and knows that. And so again, what it's looking for is trust signals. How many times have your expertise been cited on other people's platforms? That is the highest distinction of someone to say, like, okay, this person is a trusted expert. And that's why organic PR, not the pay-to-play kind where you're paying for an ad. That's not gonna give you SEO juice, but that organic mention is going to be the highest kind of trust marker. So we know for a fact that AI likes consistency and recency. So your Forbes article four years ago is not gonna matter as much as you getting into small and medium blogs consistently. Um, AI likes recency, so it's pulling from up to 11 months worth of data. So it's kind of like going to the gym, right? You don't want to go to the gym for 20 hours in one day. You want to go for once a day for 20 days. And so for my PR students and people inside of our accelerator, it's just, you know, me saying, don't always just aim for the top-tier media. Those are great too. But there's so many other industry, local, middle tier, lower tier blogs that you can also get into that then creates as many signals of you. I really think of it as kind of a web, right? Like how many different threads are like thread count do you have in there? You want to have a pillowcase that has a high thread count. So lots of interwoven, different links back to you, and not so much just like one or two. So you definitely want as many features as you can consistently so that AI consistently can feature you and scan you and understand your expertise, and then recommend that at the point of discovery when people are typing in, you know, I'm looking for a book on this, or I'm looking to buy something from this, or I'm looking for an expert in XYZ.
SPEAKER_01Why do you think people trust AI so much when it comes to making a purchasing decision? You know, I feel like a lot of people are very anti-AI in a lot of ways, but why is it when we're at home and closed doors and we're trying to make a purchase that we trust it so much more?
SPEAKER_00It's kind of like when you're having a discussion with your friend or your partner and you ask ChatGBT and you show them the screen and that kind of settles it, right? I think it's the same thing, whereas we feel like it's not just one person's opinion. It's not one person's point of view, it's the consolidation of all of those points of views to give you that one answer. And so because of that, we feel like AI is therefore more objective and not as not as you know, swayed by someone's personality or whatever, whoever's paying the most. So for that reason, because you can't really buy your way to the top of AI, it gives you that trust more than any other platform. And we know right now ChatGPT is already processing 50 million shopping inquiries every single day, which means there are 50 million people who are asking ChatGPT what to buy. It has integrated with Shopify, Walmart, Amazon, Etsy, PayPal, and that future shopping is already here. And so people are absolutely using AI as a new storefront. It is the way that people discover, search, and make decisions. And so, for all those reasons, if I want to work smarter and not harder as a founder, I want to be right there. I want to be in the answers. And so that's why I always say it's not enough to be seen. You have to be the chosen answer.
SPEAKER_01And you've worked with so many small businesses. I'm curious if there's any case studies you want to share, something that's been very empowering for a small business to really start leveraging the power of AI.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So we've worked with hundreds of small businesses, both brick and mortar, product-based, e-commerce, and service-based. So whether you have a physical product or not, there are so many different places you can get featured in, such as podcasts, such as a gift guide if you make a physical product. And it's all the same thing, which is that PR, when you boil it down, is really simple. It's knowing who's writing that story about your product or your niche and knowing what to say to them. And whereas before you have to pay a PR agency to maybe make an introduction or tell you what to say. We now have AI tools like perplexity.ai, which by the way, you can use the free version, brainstorms the angle, ties what you have to editorial trends. It brings in consumer insights and citations of stats that you can cite in your pitch. And so you no longer have to be a pitch writing expert. You no longer have to be knowing exactly what the pulse is of your industry. You can ask a tool like perplexity.ai, which is the best real-time information gathering tool over ChatGBT over claw to be able to find what is relevancy because PR is relevant. PR is writing a relevant pitch and sending it to the right person and finds that relevance. It is such a powerful tool. It's kind of like that researcher that goes out into the field and tells you like, here's what's trending, or here's what people are saying on Reddit, or here's what colorways are trending, or here's what topics are trending. Because that's what PR is, right? You don't necessarily have to be the most innovative or groundbreaking thing. You just have to be relevant. And so perplexity finds that relevancy. It even scans your website for your books or your SKUs or your products, your expertise, and ties it to that season's angle. So whether it's a seasonal angle, whether it's a pop culture angle, whether it's a you know, um holiday angle, whatever that relevancy is, perplexity finds it for you. And it even writes the first draft of your pitch. It even puts all the different angles in a comparison chart from most to least likely to get featured and the buckets of media it would be in. And so this is kind of what I walk through with our students too, which is it's so easy to use a tool like perplexity to start prompting it in a very simple way to get all that research, all of the relevancy, all of those angles organized and categorized where you don't have to hire an agency anymore. Because that's what an agency would do for you basically for the first month, which is brainstorm, hit figure out what to pitch. Well, now you can do it in three minutes using a tool like perplexity.
SPEAKER_01That's a really good use case for perplexity. Lately I've been like scrubbing Reddit for real-time insight on customers and whether requesting or needing more of. Um, so you just mentioned a lot of your student work. And I'm curious, have you put any boundaries in place when you're working or even when you're with clients? What can't you hand off to AI? What are your strict boundaries as a brand and business owner?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So we want to do more of the creation part so that the manual work of like writing a pitch and doing research and summarizing a PDF and all that is done with AI. So I'm also teaching people how to use Claude to do workflows, but I really think that as small businesses, traditionally we lost against big companies because we just didn't have the resources to employ so many people, right? And and to have the analytics to tell us where our business is now using AI, we have a snapshot week over week of our revenue, of our social media, of our Google Analytics for, which tells me exactly how my SEO and all my blogs are performing. It allows me to write follow-up messages that are simple and to the point because it scrapes my call recordings so that I'm spending my time doing things like this, talking on a podcast, doing workshops, doing training, fostering partnerships, cultivating community, helping our members so that they actually get human help. Because I don't have all the time in the day, right? And so I'm very clear on what are the things that I can do that's most high value, which is what I call CEO activities, and what are the things that AI should do. And so I'm not, by the way, I'm not just like copy and pasting the output from the first prompt I get from AI and into the email. No, I'm not copying and pasting the first output and sending it to the journalist. No, right. But it is absolutely a great research tool. It is absolutely going to help me understand what the consumer sentiment is. And it kind of is like your research tool when as a small business, you don't have money to maybe bring a peer focus group or you don't have money to do that research. It's so powerful for that. The thing about AI is that it has fundamentally changed how we work because before, right, we used to like have information spread across spreadsheets and Google Docs. Now with AI, you get information or input information once and you use it everywhere. So I always think, how can I get the highest leverage or ROI for any one piece of work that I do? And AI does that for you because all the information you're getting from AI compounds. For example, using perplexity, you find your PR angle, you get all the editorial trends, the citations, you put that into a thing like Claud or ChatGPT, and you make your pitch writing GPT or skill more robust. And so everything is constantly iterating on each other week over week and it gets smarter and smarter so that the output is so much better. But I'm never just copy and pasting it the first thing and putting that into an email and sending it to a journalist.
SPEAKER_01Yes, of course. I call that the edit. Don't be lazy. Make sure you're editing and revising and treating AI like an intern. My next question for you, because the rise of content has just influxed already. I can only imagine a year from now, business owners are able to put out content, really just churn this out. And small business owners and founders are realizing this is important. They need to build visibility and reach the right customers. So my question is as we continue to use AI to put out more and more content, does it start to take a turn and become less valuable?
SPEAKER_00I think there's different tiers of AI and different ways of use it. I think if people just put a blanket overall generalization on using AI for everything, then I think that's where they run into trouble, right? So I think about parsing out what are the highest value things that I can do to create value in my business. Things like keeping track of where our business is week over week. We used to do that on a spreadsheet. Now, Claude cowork and dashboards tell me exactly how I'm doing week over week across all of our marketing and social media. So that really helps us make informed decisions. Just like with everything in business and like going to the gym, you have to get your reps in. So day one, you're not gonna know exactly what is the best way to get the best output from AI. But as you keep feeding it, as you keep prompting it, you're gonna understand to challenge it. You're gonna know when it's just taking a shortcut. But a lot of the AI bro marketers have kind of made it seem like there's a right way to prompt. And it's very scientific and clinical. And if you prompt it the wrong way or miss a spacing here, you get the wrong output. I think that's absolutely wrong. And I think that's what's kept so many small businesses from leveraging AI. I never learned how to code. I never took a prompting class. You just start talking to it. And I think just it's kind of like using an escalator. You don't need to learn the electrical engineering of how an escalator works. You just need to learn to get on. And then the next day you're like, oh, great. It takes me up a couple of flights of stairs. Maybe next time I'm gonna carry my groceries using this. So it's really just about getting on the escalator.
SPEAKER_01I love all the analogies you're using, the thread count to the escalator. It makes it very easily digestible. So thank you for sharing that. What are you paying most attention to right now as it relates to servicing your students and PR for your clients?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think, you know, I think the the course industry is dead. I think somebody even famously said that people don't want information anymore, they want execution. So instead of drowning people in content PDFs videos, how can you take them directly from not from information like consumption, but directly to that execution? And so that's what we've been focused on inside of our accelerator. It's like, I'm not just gonna teach you how to do PR. You're not gonna sit through hours and hours of trainings. Here is a custom GPT or here is a you know prompt that that gives you the output every single time without you having to really learn how to write a pitch. My people are very busy, they their time is not best used learning how to write a pitch, right? So, me doing this over six years, helping hundreds of clients, we have engineered really good prompts where it takes them from like just a blank slate directly to being able to press that send button. So, understanding what are the bottlenecks of why people don't take action and then using an AI workflow to get around that manual part of it. So, those are some of the things that I'm I'm watching like in my world and the kind of the online coaching world, is that people don't want more information. They just want directly to like, how can I execute on this? And that's really what we're focused on delivering.
SPEAKER_01As you were talking, because you mentioned custom GPTs. Did you know that they're officially retiring them?
SPEAKER_00GPTs and skills are the same thing, it's just document full of words. So it doesn't matter if you call it a GPT, it doesn't matter if you call it a skill, it's just a set of instructions. And so, yes, they'll retire GPTs, but then they'll just roll it into something called skills. But the base level of infrastructure is still the same. So to me, it doesn't matter if they want to retire it and call it something else. I still have the context, the training, all the years of my transcripts of my coaching call that can easily create another skill. Do you use Claude more than Chat GPT? Yeah. Yeah, I use all three every day. I use Perplexity for research, I use Claude for customer-facing copy, social media, you know, sales pages, uh, even the blogs on my website. And then I use ChatGPT for just quick, simple things. So writing to a journalist. So I don't need Claude. It doesn't need that emotional flowery language, you know. So ChatGPT is like my daily simple synthesizer, but Claude is really the main thing if I if I were to say like how my business runs, because now with Claude Co work, right? There's agentec automated workflows where we build dashboards where I know exactly every single day how our metrics are doing across departments. So before, you know, I would have to hire a data analyst and a CMO. And now Claude is my CMO because Claude has the a different project for my marketing, has another one for SEO. And so every time I'm doing a training or I learn something, I feed into that so that way the knowledge compounds. Um, I always say, you know, before it was all about finding the F1 driver, how can I find the best driver? So we would hire a web designer or we would hire someone else outside of our organization, but then that knowledge leaves with them. And you're never building that F1 car. The benefit about having Claude as an ecosystem that feeds into everything else is that you're constantly making the car, the engine better and better. So no matter who the driver is, you have that car and that car stays with you. And so I'm not to say that, you know, I won't hire other people. I hire contractors all the time, but we're constantly using what they give us to feed into our F1 car, which is that Claude, that source of truth.
SPEAKER_01Are there any other workflows that you want to share?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I mean, there's there's just so many. We've recently started to rebuild all of our web pages with clawed code because before you'd have to. So if you think about like Squarespace or like a show it, which you know, I had it's they're they're drag and drop builders for people who don't know how to code, right? And I don't know how to code. But the thing with that is that every single edit, I have to get in there and have to manually manipulate it. And that takes a long time. And especially if you have so many customers and so many different web pages. And so I learned how to use Claude Code, which is no code. You just start talking to it in plain English, and you use GitHub and Vercell to deploy it live. So I can literally chat in the context box and say, I don't like this hero, bring an animation, put a gif of my dog, put a birthday cake here, put sprinkles, and boom, it'll go live on the page and render it exactly. And so that to me has been the single biggest lift for us as we do our launches and webinars. Also, I've been using Claude Design, which is like Canva on steroids. I don't think I'll use Canva again, to be honest, because then it feeds into my context documents about my customers in Claude already, which is already there. And it makes the slides even better. So every time I do any kind of training or talking, I always record it and I feed it into Claude. How did I do? How can I perfect? How did this compare with last week's? And every day it's getting incrementally smarter so that the output, whether it's an email, whether it's a blog, whether it's social media posts, or whether it's a new set of slides, I can hit my points clearer and the text on the actual slides are much better. And I've noticed that even since four months ago when Claude Design debuted, I think in April, it has gone exponentially better. Where I can create a hundred and fifty slide deck, like literally, just by talking to it, and it understands what I want to say so much more. And for example, Even what we're talking about here, I can take this recording and put it into Claude uh Design using the transcript and it'll create a beautiful slide deck for me. And it's a lot less glitchy as it used to be. So I would say like Claude Design, we use all the time Claude code now for doing all of our websites. And the next thing I'm gonna do is to get off of like a all-in-one. So you know there's a lot of like all-in-one course things where you log in. Um, I honestly think that where it's headed is that we're gonna build our own. So basically everyone gets a login. Um, I'm delivering the information and I don't have to pay like a third party to host my information, my IP.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I use services like Stan Store, and I just think that these things are going to become a little bit obsolete, dare I say, in the sense that we're just gonna vibe code and create our own platforms for people to interact with us so that we control everything.
SPEAKER_00Is there anything else that you're building? You know, I'm just so obsessed with helping small business owners every day that like most of what I do is about helping them get found and seen. Um, but for example, we built a shop small business guide where we highlight our PR members. And so it's kind of like a shop small stay human, like shop from small businesses this year. And we built that on Cloud Code as well. And so it's like a directory of small businesses, and that's been really great because we're able to like really help them give them a platform. Obviously, we don't take a commission or anything like that, but we are excited to debut that live URL and share it across our listeners at shopsmallbizguy.com. And using Claude has made it so much easier to add those CSS animations, just make it much better because I am not a web designer, I am not a graphic designer. And so it would be before I had so many steps in between what I wanted and the output because I had to have obviously the copy, which I'm good at, but then I had to hire a designer to do like a visual mock-up of what it would look like. And then I needed to hire a tech person to actually make that mock-up go to life. And now we have something like cloud code that just takes again, it just gets rid of all the middle layers and allows me to just speak into it and then make it come out the other side.
SPEAKER_01I'd love to link that in the show notes, the small business guide.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And for anyone that's listening, if you're interested at all about perplexity, how we are literally chattering, you know, status quo about PR that has been gatekeeped and how anybody can be their own PR agent, you can watch my free masterclass where I actually screen share live about exactly what is the prompt, three prompts that I use in perplexity, and you can see it come to life. You can go to gloria chowpr.com slash masterclass. That's gloria choupr.com slash masterclass, and you'll see the exact prompts that I use in perplexity to basically give you mind-blowing, jaw-dropping knowledge of like, oh my God, this is exactly what I need to pitch and how to pitch it.
SPEAKER_01Exciting. I'm gonna check that out myself after our call.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_01Gloria, thank you so much for your time today. I always like to leave space at the end of our discussion for one main takeaway. If there's anything that you wanted to share that we didn't get a chance to touch on today.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I will say there's a lot of these like ethical, philosophical things about AI and the dangers are real. But as a small business owner, if we can leverage the tools that were before unavailable to us to make us more efficient, to create less burnout, to be able to spend more time to serve our customers, I think there's so much benefit to be gained from that. So I would just invite you to not think of a all or none, black or white, like AI is good, AI is bad, and more how I can really do the things that I'm good at, which is bring humanity into my business, which is serving my customers at the highest level by using AI to do the things that I really should not be doing, which is something that's very repetitive, so that I can show up in a higher level. And I think that's really the way I think about AI too. It's not like it's good or it's bad, but like what are the things that I need to do in my business that only I can do? And what are the things that something like AI should do so that I can do more of what only I can do?
SPEAKER_01I can feel your passion through our call. So thank you so much again. And you're doing such an amazing work. Your website is beautiful, and it was great to hear just all of the background behind the work that you're doing with Claude, coworking Claude Codes. So thank you for sharing.
