Welcome to day five of our Holy Week timeline from Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday. Day five, Passover and Last Supper on Monday Thursday. Holy Week takes a somber turn on Thursday. From Bethany, Jesus sent Peter and John ahead of him to the upper room in Jerusalem to prepare for the Passover feast. That evening, Jesus washed his disciples' feet as they prepared to share in the Passover. By performing this humble act of service, Jesus demonstrated by example how his followers should serve the church. And today, many churches practice foot washing ceremonies as a part of their Maundy Thursday services. Then Jesus shared the feast of the Passover, saying, I've been very eager to share this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. For I tell you now that I won't eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. As the Lamb of God, Jesus was about to fulfill the meaning of the Passover by giving his body and blood in sacrifice and freeing us from sin and death. During this Last Supper, Jesus established what we often call communion, instructing his followers to always remember his sacrifice by sharing in the wine and the bread. Then Jesus and the disciples left the upper room and went to the garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed in agony to the Father. Luke's gospel said his sweat became like great drops of blood falling to the ground. And that evening in Gethsemane, Jesus was betrayed with a kiss by Judas and arrested. He was taken to the high priest Caiaphas, where the Sanhedrin gathered to make their case against Jesus. And early the next morning, Jesus' trial began. Peter denied knowing him three times before the rooster crowed, just as Jesus said he would. In review, Jesus and the disciples gathered for the Passover meal. Jesus identified Judas as his betrayer, and he instituted the Lord's Supper, and he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. And Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss, and Jesus was arrested. The Lord's Supper is a reminder that death doesn't define our lives, a foundation for holy communion, a celebration of the new command that Jesus gave his followers to love one another. The Passover meal is a reminder of freedom from death and that sin can be removed from our lives Maundy Thursday, also called Holy Thursday. And the events are recorded in all four Gospels. This has been day five of Holy Week. From Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday. He is risen. Risen indeed.
