Welcome to day seven of our Holy Week timeline. From Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday. Day seven. Saturday in the tomb. Jesus' body lay in the tomb where it was guarded by Roman soldiers throughout the day on Saturday, which was Sabbath. His body was ceremonially treated for burial with spices purchased by Nicodemus. John 19. He brought about 75 pounds of ointment made from aloes and myrrh. Following Jewish custom, they wrapped Jesus' body with spices and long sheets of linen. Nicodemus, like Joseph of Arimathea, was a member of the Sanhedrin, the court that condemned Jesus to death. Both had been secret followers of Jesus, afraid to make public professions of faith because of their prominent positions in the community. They were also both deeply affected by Jesus' death, but they came out of hiding, risking their reputations, even their lives, because they came to realize who Jesus was, the long-awaited Messiah. So together they cared for Jesus' body and they prepared it for burial. While his physical body lay in the tomb, Jesus had paid the penalty for sin by offering the perfect sacrifice. He conquered death and secured our eternal salvation. 1 Peter chapter 1, for you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. He paid for you with the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. Here's our review. Holy Saturday is the day when Jesus rested in the tomb after his death on Friday. A somber day of reflection, contemplation of a world without the hope of Christ. It's a day we anticipate the celebration and the glorious resurrection of Christ, who brought us redemption and hope. This has been day seven of Holy Week. From Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday. He is risen. Risen indeed.
