Killers, Liars, and Cowards: A Portrait of a Family
A reading of the novel Killers, Liars, and Cowards: A Portrait of a Family, which is about Kailani Kahale, who was born to save the earth from annihilation, her grandfather's mysterious vision foretelling her fate—at least that's what her family says. But how can she believe them when they're nothing but killers, liars, and cowards? Just in case, she lives off the grid on her property in the Hawaiian jungle, quietly tending to her bees, avoiding contact with the outside world.
Everything changes when the FBI finds a body on her land, forcing her into hiding. To return home, she must confront the devil, a Texas lawyer named David Goddard; uncover the web of family lies; and find her true purpose. She just has to do it before the planet blows to bits.

Chapter 4
There was a rare Sophie sighting in the kitchen, Maui and I having stayed up all night and Sophie having come for her morning coffee. She flashed a legitimate smile at me, like she was posing for a family photo. Maui gave her a sideways hug and kissed the top of her head. "Judging by the mess," she said, "Death by Chocolate was a big hit. Noted." Manoa and Benny came in next, inspecting the unusual scene, the cold white kitchen in complete disarray, cake crumbs and dirty dishes left on the counter, showing evidence of an uncontrolled life, usually not allowed. It was the Kahales and me, warming the kitchen, casually laughing. I didn't want the morning to end, but Benny directed a compassionate look toward me and said, "you better change for the appointment."
