Killers, Liars, and Cowards: A Portrait of a Family
A reading of the novel Killers, Liars, and Cowards: A Portrait of a Family, which is about Kailani Kahale, who was born to save the earth from annihilation, her grandfather's mysterious vision foretelling her fate—at least that's what her family says. But how can she believe them when they're nothing but killers, liars, and cowards? Just in case, she lives off the grid on her property in the Hawaiian jungle, quietly tending to her bees, avoiding contact with the outside world.
Everything changes when the FBI finds a body on her land, forcing her into hiding. To return home, she must confront the devil, a Texas lawyer named David Goddard; uncover the web of family lies; and find her true purpose. She just has to do it before the planet blows to bits.

Chapter 8
"Why don't you come out with me to the ocean anymore?" Kai said one day. It was always surprising when Kai talked to me without ordering me around. It didn't quite occur to me she ever noticed me as anything but a servant to bring her a book or a glass of milk, which I was happy to do.
"Well, baby, I've been going to check on the bees."
"What bees? Where do they live?"
"Do you know what bees are?"
"Yes, they're bugs."
"No, they're not bugs. They are a very advanced species, more advanced than even humans."
