Welcome to Silent Mode Cafe
Speaker 1Welcome to Silent Mode Cafe , the podcast where we sip slow and think privacy .
Speaker 2Every week , we break down privacy , security and digital tools designed for real people . No tinfoil hats , no jargon , just the stuff that actually matters .
Speaker 1I don't know about no tinfoil hats , but listen , from burner emails to anonymous payments and data broker takedowns . We're helping you take back control of your digital life , literally one cup at a time , folks .
Speaker 2So if you were asked , why am I still getting emails from a site I used once in 2014 ? You're in the right place .
Speaker 1All right . Well , let's
Weekly Cyber Incidents Roundup
Speaker 1get started . This week's major cyber incidents Samsung Android Zero Day , once again being exploded through messaging apps like WhatsApp , apple Image , io Zero Day and over 1,000 new vulnerabilities disclosed in a single week , including POCs for Apple , adobe , zimbra and more .
Speaker 2The other piece of news in the past 24 hours is there's been a spate of cyber attacks on European airports , which impacted check-in , baggage and boarding systems that went down . In addition , there was DFW Dallas-Fort Worth , as well as the other airport I believe it's called Love out of Dallas Airport , which is another airport in Dallas that also went down . They're not confirming it to be a cyber attack incident , at least not in the US , but obviously , with the European airports going down and then quote-unquote equipment failure in the US airports , it's pointing to that . So that's something that you should be aware of . There's also been a caring luxury brands breach . So , for all our fascists fashion , I just think , fascist For all you fashion fascists . We'll start with the next .
Speaker 1So what brands were affected ?
Speaker 2Gucci , balenciaga , etc . They were accessed by hackers . So if you've been shopping luxury brands , then your data is exposed . And then , of course , jaguar Land Rover shut down , because apparently there was also a cyber incident with Jaguar For weeks they were disrupted . Huh , oh my .
Speaker 1God for weeks . Holy cow , that must have cost tens of millions , I'm sure .
Speaker 2Is anyone even ?
Speaker 1ordering Jaguar Land Rover . I'm just kidding . I'm just kidding .
Speaker 2They're all over the road we are not the target market for jaguar or bank balance apparently apparently all right .
Speaker 1Well , let's get , let's jump
Action Steps to Protect Yourself
Speaker 1into it . Um , so what can you do this week ? Let's talk about some action . Um , first and foremost , look this uh , samsung hack is incredibly relevant to all of you Samsung users . So this is a very simple fix Update your software . If you're on an iPhone or iPad , make sure you're running the latest iOS , or at least minimum iOS 16.7.12 . Ok , turn off auto downloads for images , videos and messaging apps on WhatsApp or Telegram .
Speaker 1Vivek , the secure messaging app . Check permissions in your apps . Remove access to camera mic location where it's not needed . So many of your apps try to access your mic and location and your camera . I have no idea why gaming apps need to have access to this stuff , but if it does , folks just turn those off Again . Just go through , spend time on your phone . Remove those apps and turn them on and then watch for phishing emails .
Speaker 1Vivek mentioned the luxury brands . So for those of you and that's not Vivek or I but if you have accounts with Gucci , balenciaga and YSL , which is an incredibly popular purse and other stuff that I see , I know my wife has a YSL I'm going to have to go check her accounts , but do not click on any of these suspicious links , you will get emails at this point , phishing emails . They are phishing emails . Enable two-factor if you want to keep your accounts on those shopping , if you have a Gucci , balenciaga , ysl account , add two-factor authentication on those emails and your email accounts . If you don't have two-factor on your email accounts , you are in serious trouble . Well , are you traveling soon ? Well , check your flight status before heading to the airport .
Speaker 1Those hacks that Vivek just mentioned will cause delays . There will be extra time in case of check-in system issues . Yep , so the other one is if you're waiting for car parts , ask your dealer if they're affected by the JLR shutdown and expect delays . Look , I'll leave you with this . Update your router . I know it comes back down to your smart home security . Update your router . If you've been seeing some funny things happening in your home network , the best thing to do update your router , update all your systems , reboot them , and you know , because these vulnerabilities do not just stop on your devices
Smart Home Security Essentials
Speaker 1and your phones .
Speaker 2Yep , and so the golden tip of the week , if we again kind of reframe it is if you use it daily , update it weekly . If you ever think about it like your router or your smart TV , update it right now . A lot of smart TVs now have a pop-up that says a new version of your firmware is available . Please do click and update it . I know it's sometimes painful to see that message in the middle of your TV screen , but it's worth the hassle rather than getting your TV hacked and then hackers jumping onto your Wi-Fi network and then start extracting data which they shouldn't be extracting . Those kinds of attacks are becoming more and more popular as home devices are all getting connected to the internet , so you know these are the devices attackers count on you ignoring . So things like your smart TVs , smart refrigerators , routers , your cameras at home . Please make sure that and we've been saying it every week but please make sure that they keep on getting updated with the latest firmware and you keep up to speed on exactly what's going on .
Speaker 1Interesting Yep . All right , folks . Next week we're talking about many of those products , specifically smart speakers , home cameras and devices that are listening to you even when you're not talking to it
Next Week's Preview and Closing
Speaker 1.
Speaker 2Yeah , so if you've ever said that ad is way too specific like , for example , if you're planning a trip to Hawaii and then suddenly you start getting ads about it and you're shocked like how do they know I'm thinking of going to Hawaii You'll want to hear this episode .
Speaker 1So , vivek , what devices listen to me ?
Speaker 2You mean other ?
Speaker 1than your wife . Give me a deeper tease . Yeah , you mean other than your wife . Give me an expertise .
Speaker 2We're going to get into trouble in this episode . In later news Vivek and Salah are in the doghouse , so I mean anything right Like your phone . You have to always look at your phone right . So you have to turn off apps on the phone that have access to your microphone , that shouldn't have access access to your speakers , and then I would start with the phone right , and that's where I would start , and in the future you can look at additional devices such as your laptop , your iPad anything , I bought my Alexa .
Speaker 2Your Alexa . Alexa is always listening to you . Google is all , yes .
Speaker 1Well , if you like this format quick patches , real-world breakdowns and simple tools share this episode with someone who definitely hasn't updated their iPhone yet .
