From Flooring Rep to Business Owner: Hunter Ross's Journey of Craftsmanship and Customer Care

Hunter Ross Episode 1

Meet the Host: Hunter Ross, Owner of Wood Floors of Dallas

Ever wondered what makes a true craftsman tick? In our debut episode, Hunter Ross pulls back the curtain on his remarkable journey from hardwood flooring representative to founding Wood Floors of Dallas twelve years ago. With candor and warmth, Hunter shares how decades of hands-on experience transformed him into the technical expert clients call when they need complex flooring problems solved.

Beyond hardwood expertise, we discover Hunter's holistic approach to business and life. From his love of beach volleyball and paddleboarding (his go-to stress reliever after long days) to dedicated time with his two sons, Hunter reveals how maintaining balance fuels his professional drive. Perhaps most compelling is his core business value: "Anybody can do a floor, but it's the heart and integrity behind it" that matters most. When problems arise, Hunter's team stands firmly behind their work, honoring commitments with unwavering reliability.

Whether you're a homeowner or a general contractor, we're here to help you create amazing spaces with honor, quality and expertise. Let's get started.

Speaker 2:

Welcome everyone. I'm Sofia Ay Yvette, co-host and producer here in the studio with Hunter Ross. Hunter, how's it going today?

Speaker 3:

Hey, it's going great. How are you, Sofia?

Speaker 2:

I'm doing great Hunter, so over the years you've grown a remarkable following. However, some listeners might not be familiar with your full journey. Let's take it from the top. Could you share a little background about your company and what you do?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, absolutely. First off, I just want to say thank you for this, and doing this first podcast is, I think, a beginning of a good journey and I'm excited to share all the things that we do and the things that we've learned over the time with everybody. So I think it's going to be a lot of fun. So jumping into Wood Floors of Dallas and kind of what we do is pretty straightforward. We have been hardwood experts for a very long time for hardwood flooring. I started many years ago as a rep in this business selling other people's engineered hardwood floors. Through that process got to meet a lot of really good people in the industry both on the manufacturing side and distribution side, as well as the retail side of people who sell floors to other people and also make really good contacts and find really good people who are experts in their craft at all the installation. The way I got into the business is a culmination of a lot of studying, a lot of hard work and understanding the flooring industry from kind of end to end, and then I had an opportunity to start my own company and that was 12 years ago. So been doing it a long time and over the process just have kind of made myself an expert by doing all the investigation and learning that's necessary to understand all the different facets of the industry, all the different products and the best ways to do installation. It's kind of where we started from.

Speaker 3:

Today we are a full service flooring company. We do all kinds of hardwood. Of course, we specialize in high-end residential remodel. For the most part, we do builder business. We do commercial projects and most of our clients call us when they need a technical expert to solve problems. We also do full remodels now with kitchen and bath remodels, et cetera. So we act as a general contractor a lot of our big projects. That's been a long journey and we've got an amazing team. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here. My support staff is awesome and all the people we work with in the trades that we work with are really good people that I've known a long time. So, yeah, we've built a pretty successful business and I'm happy to share what we do with everybody else.

Speaker 2:

So, hunter, when you're not busy running your business, what do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

Ooh, lots of things, Because when you work to all hours of the day at night and your phone never stops ringing, you definitely have to have some mental breaks. One of my favorite things to do is beach sand volleyball. I play a lot of volleyball during the summer and paddleboard is a really good way to clear your head at the end of a long day. I have a membership where if my day's going really hard or strenuous dressed out, I can just pull up to the place, grab a paddleboard, go out and hang out and watch the sunset for an hour or whatever it is to get those breaks. But I love being outside. I love. I also definitely spend a lot of time working out and eating right and things like that, just to kind of keep the energy ball rolling, if you will. I have two boys. One is 22 and one is 18. And they're obviously in school and doing all the things that they do, but when I can, I spend a lot of time with them and the family and friends, et cetera.

Speaker 2:

Amazing, and family is always so important. So, hunter, you are a very busy person and all of our listeners want to know, in your own words, why are you doing this?

Speaker 3:

That's pretty easy. I know myself pretty well at this point. Right, I'm 44. So I know what drives me and, more than anything else, I love creating awesome stuff.

Speaker 3:

The benefit that you have with a customer coming to you with a problem or a need, the benefit that you get out of it from being able to take that need, turn it into a project and then watch the whole thing unfold and then the result being a very happy client or a very happy customer with beautiful new flooring, for example, client or a very happy customer with beautiful new flooring, for example it's hard to beat that reward.

Speaker 3:

So I think definitely for me it's the reward of getting to make awesome things for people.

Speaker 3:

There's so many people that can come into your home and kind of say what they want to say to convince you to do their work.

Speaker 3:

But it's a whole other level of accountability when you take their jobs very seriously, like you treat their house like your home, and that's what we do throughout our kind of chain of command, throughout everything we do is we consider every single project important and we spend a lot of time and effort and focus in making that happen.

Speaker 3:

And the end result is if we care about your project and we put all of our effort into making it do the best that you can. That reward is even greater because, if they hadn't chosen us, we feel very confidently that the other companies that are out here in the market don't have that kind of devotion to the whole process and to ending with such a good outcome. The whole process and to ending with such a good outcome, customer service obviously being the most important thing that we do, because anybody can do a floor, but it's the heart and the integrity that you have behind it to make sure that if mistakes happen or anything happens with a project, that you honor your commitments and you do what's right. So, yeah, that's kind of the drive we have behind that, for sure.

Speaker 2:

Love it, Hunter. We'll catch you in the next episode where we'll dive into some frequently asked questions. Have a fantastic rest of your day.

Speaker 3:

Thank you so much, Sophia.
