The Wedding Day & Car Show Chronicles
We examine a moral dilemma about refusing to host a friend and her large dog when you have cats and allergies in the household, then share a special pre-wedding conversation with my daughter Madison and her fiancé Beckett before their big day.
• Both parties in the "Am I the Jerk" case show inflexibility – the homeowner could have made accommodations for the visiting dog, while the friend should have graciously accepted the Airbnb alternative
• My daughter Madisen and her fiancé Beckett join to discuss their wedding day excitement, with predictions that Dad will definitely cry during the ceremony
• I share heartfelt advice with the couple about maintaining respect and appreciation throughout their marriage
• Rick Fernaux previews the upcoming Cruisin' the Rim Car Show benefiting the Salvation Army of the White Mountains, with registration still open for classic cars
• The free community event includes a Friday June 6 cruise down the Deuce to the Burger Burn and Saturday's Show and Shine at Frontier Field from 9am to 3pm
Come on out to the Cruisin' the Rim Car Show on June 7th in Show Low. event runs from 9am to 3pm at Frontier Field with free admission and parking.
From the Horn Auto Center Studios Chris Bennett and the Morning Brew it's time for Am I the. Jerk.
Speaker 3:Court.
Speaker 1:All rise. The Honorable Janine Ford presides. You ready? Yes.
Speaker 1:I'm ready, you got your robe and wig on. Sure. All right, here we go. I'm 32, live in the suburbs with my partner, who has two cats, and work from home as a freelance writer. My old college friend, kayla, texted, said she'd be in town for a week and wanted to stay at my place with her 90 pound golden retriever Maple is the name. She said you've got a yard, it will be perfect. The problem my cats are terrified of dogs. One's elderly and on meds, and my partner has a dog allergy. I kindly explained all that, offered to help her find a pet friendly Airbnb, even offered to chip in. But Kayla got upset, called me rigid and said I was choosing pets over people. Now she's ghosting me. Some friends say I did the right thing, others say I should have made it work. For a few days I don't think I was unreasonable, but now I'm wondering am I the jerk?
Speaker 3:Well, you know he has a backyard. Maple sounds like a very sweet dog, it's a gold retriever and you know what I might've done some things. Like you know, there are cat crates and there are places that you can locate your cats in the laundry room or different kinds of things like that I may have. I may have done some things to help her stay there. I think he might be being a little too rigid. You know what I mean.
Speaker 2:Oh really.
Speaker 3:I just feel that way. I mean, it's cats are very easily, you know, put in, you know in a room with their kitty litter box and making them comfortable. It's pretty easy to move cats around and then they do have a backyard. So this is obviously a really close friend and I don't know unless he, you know, I don't know I mean to dissolve a friendship over it. I would have kind of made some accommodations and been a little bit more bendable.
Speaker 1:I think the one, the friend that is upset that they can't stay at his place with their dog, I think they're being a little bit of a jerk, you know.
Speaker 3:Yes, I agree with that too. I think she's being a little too hard-nosed Both of them are being hard-nosed Right and she should have backed up and said oh no problem, I'll take the Airbnb. If I was on her side, I'd say oh no problem, I'll do the Airbnb and I'll just do it that way. That would be easier on you. So she should bend too, but they both could. Here's my thing this one is kind of right in the middle. I think they both could have been real bendy.
Speaker 1:Okay, so you think they're both kind of being little jerks.
Speaker 3:Yes, they're both being jerks. I like that one.
Speaker 1:In the case of, am I the jerk for not letting my friend bring her dog to stay at my house when she visits Janine rules? You're both kind of jerky. You're both kind of being jerky, yeah.
Speaker 4:There we go.
Speaker 1:It's a hung jury today. All right, Janine, we love you. Best friend, have a great day. You too, have a good one. Bye-bye. Today is the big day. My daughter is getting married to the love of her life, Beckett Ricks. I'm so excited. I'm going to be officiating the wedding and Madison and Beckett are on the line with me. You guys got to be so excited. Tell us a little bit about you know the wedding today.
Speaker 4:We're so excited it's going to be in Utah. We're going to be married in a lovely garden With lots of flowers.
Speaker 1:I know you don't want to say, I know you don't want to say where, but is it the Home Depot Garden Center? How did you know? Well, okay, everyone Don't show up. You're appreciating, of course you are. Yeah, I'm so excited. It's going to be an amazing wedding. I thought we would do some fun questions for Madison and Beckett on the day of your wedding. You guys ready.
Speaker 4:Yes.
Speaker 1:All right. What's the one thing you're most excited about today?
Speaker 4:Probably getting married. Well, besides the obvious, I am so, so excited to see my lovely fiance walk down the wedding aisle and to be able to share some tears with my lovely father-in-law.
Speaker 1:What about you, Madison?
Speaker 4:I don't know. I'm just so excited for everything. I'm so excited to just be there with all the people that I love so much.
Speaker 1:That's beautiful. Next question who's more likely to cry Madison Beckett or me you? Okay, everyone can agree on that. What is your pre-wedding snack strategy? Full meal or nibble?
Speaker 4:I don't think Beckett's thought about this at all, but I have for myself. Our plan is kind of just to have some food that's light, that we can eat throughout the day. I think, andrea, my mom, your wife, is planning on making some quiches at some point in the morning and having some fresh fruit.
Speaker 1:Yeah, beckett, you need to talk to your best man and make sure he has some food, because you're not getting married till like four in the afternoon. Yeah, I got to get that figured out. We've had the opportunity to have a lot of fun with Madison and Beckett, her fiance, this week. Thank you so much, you two, for joining me and helping me pre-record our shows for this week.
Speaker 4:Of course. Thank you for having us.
Speaker 1:Absolutely, having her Absolutely. Before I let you go, I just want to give both of you some closing words with dad, because one of the coolest things that's happening is not only did my daughter find a wonderful, wonderful young man. I'm so thankful for you, beckett, and thank you so much for how you treat my daughter, and it's such a blessing that she's found you and she gets to spend the rest of her life with you. Thank you.
Speaker 1:And Madison, I've watched you grown from this wonderful, wonderful little girl into this amazing woman and you're such a hard worker and you have such a great heart and you're so sweet and I just love the life that you and Beckett have in front of each other and I love how you two treat each other and how you love each other and how sweet you are to each other, and my advice for both of you is don't lose that. Remember to always treat each other with respect and sweetness and don't take each other for granted. And I know you two have an amazing life in front of you and I'm so excited to get a front row seat to watch this next chapter of life. I love you both so much.
Speaker 4:We love you. We love you very much, all right.

It's free admission, free parking, a great show. You get to vote on your favorite vehicle. It's a great show and it benefits the local Salvation Army.

Speaker 2:Oh okay, I couldn't do the monster truck, so it'll have to parallel park it. Oh okay, I couldn't do the monster truck, so it'll have to be the Prius.
Speaker 1:All right. Would you rather wax 100 cars in one day or explain what a carburetor does to 100 people who think it's a coffee drink?
Speaker 2:I'd rather explain the carburetor issue.
Speaker 1:Would you rather have a 63 split window Corvette coupe or a classic Ford Mustang?
Speaker 2:I would rather have the 63 split window coupe.
Speaker 1:And would you rather spill coffee on your own classic car or someone else's classic car at the event?
Speaker 2:I would have to say, spill it on mine.
Speaker 1:Right. Would you rather your engine sound like a weed wracker or your horn sound like a clown car?
Speaker 2:Horn like a clown car.
Speaker 1:That was. Would you Rather with Rick Furneaux, with the Cruise on the Rim Car Show? Rick, thanks so much for coming in today.
