The Morning Brew with Chris Bennett

Cats, Dads, and Dance Moves: Friday the 13th Never Sounded So Fun

Chris Bennett Episode 52

Send us a text

Friday the 13th brings good luck to Morning Brew listeners as host Chris Bennett delivers a lively show packed with laughs, community updates, and Father's Day festivities. Birthday boy Jan the Weatherman shares an unexpected surprise - his rescued cat recently gave birth to seven kittens, creating an instant feline family!

Dave Ramsey joins for a hilarious Father's Day edition of "Boo or Cool," definitively settling which gifts dads actually want. Traditional neckties receive unanimous thumbs down, while practical items like drink-holding fanny packs earn enthusiastic approval. The segment reflects what research confirms - most fathers genuinely prefer quality time with loved ones over material gifts.

The White Mountains calendar overflows with weekend activities including Show Low Days, Flag Day celebrations, and commemorations for the U.S. Army's 250th birthday. Fundraisers for Pet Allies and 4-H programs showcase the community's generous spirit, while global Father's Day traditions from Germany's beer wagon processions to Mexico's 21K races provide fascinating cultural context.

Becky from Tipsy Hippie Grill and Lewis from Show Low Auto Body promote Saturday's dance competition featuring six categories and prizes worth over $1000 from local businesses. The family-friendly event welcomes dancers of all skill levels - even those with "two left feet" as Paul from Beaumont confesses during the "Are You Smarter Than a Redneck?" trivia segment. Paul may have won the dance terminology challenge, but he shares a touching reflection on fatherhood that resonates beyond any trivia victory.

Whether you're attending community events, participating in the dance-off, or simply spending quality time with family this Father's Day weekend, the Morning Brew reminds us what matters most: connecting with the fathers and father figures who shape our lives. Give dad a call - it means more than any tie ever could!

Speaker 2:

No, no surprises today.

Speaker 1:

No surprises from the kitties or the dogs yet.

Speaker 2:

Kitties got a box of doggies. Just like when they head for the door, I better let them go. That's awesome.

Speaker 1:

Well, dave, let's play a little Boo or Cool, father's Day edition. You ready? Yep, all right, boo or Cool. A tie as a gift for Father's Day?

Speaker 2:

Boo Would that ever have been a good gift for Father's Day.

Speaker 1:

Boo. Have you ever? Would that ever have been a good gift for you? Don't wear them. Don't wear them. What about a bacon-scented candle? Boo, Boo, Boo-boo. Oh, you say boo. Alright, Becky agrees with you. Let's see. What about one of those talking fish plaques that says take me to the river?

Speaker 2:

No.

Speaker 3:

That's boo too.

Speaker 1:

My dad had one of those.

Speaker 3:

I want one of those.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, my dad had one of those.

Speaker 1:

What about a Yoda best dad t-shirt?

Speaker 2:

I'm sure, but I ain't that sure, totally boo.

Speaker 1:

Totally boo Okay. What about a fanny pack with a built-in drink holder? Totally boo Okay.

Speaker 2:

What about a fanny?

Speaker 1:

pack with a built-in drink holder. Cool, heck, yeah. What about a giant remote control?

Speaker 3:

Oh yeah, that'd be cool, yeah, that would be cool.

Speaker 1:

How big? Let's say the size of an iPad. That'd be cool. What about the size of a front door?

Speaker 2:

Front door Totally boo.

Speaker 1:

That was Boo or Cool with Dave Ramsey. Dave, thanks so much for having fun with us this morning, and I hope you have a great Father's Day, buddy, you too. All right, bye Bye, janine. Are you over there? Yes, I am of Father's Day, buddy, you too. All right, bye, bye, janine. Are you over there? Yes, I am, of course. Heck, yeah, happy Friday morning. We made it.

Speaker 5:

I know Friday the 13th.

Speaker 1:

That's right, friday the 13th. What have you got going on this weekend, oh?

Speaker 5:

such a big weekend. Yeah, I'm going to sneak Clint away for a little hideout Friday tonight and we're going to go do that and have a fun night together and then we're coming back tomorrow and it's a giant kids party on Saturday, a birthday for our grandson Makilo, in the backyard with a big old inflatable and all that stuff.

Speaker 4:

So that's good.

Speaker 5:

And Father's Day so fun. I know I love it and you know we got everything going on this weekend?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, we got a lot going on. What do you do for Clint for Father's Day? How would someone knock?

Speaker 5:

it out of the park, I can't talk about that.

Speaker 1:

Oh, really, it's a secret. Well, give me one tip, like for maybe a lady out there who's like I don't know what to do for my husband.

Speaker 5:

You do everything special for him oh.

Speaker 1:

Yes him, oh yeah. Yes, everything he loves, yes, wonderful. I have a fun weekend coming up. Today at one o'clock I'm going to be getting dunked in the dunk tank for the Navajo County Family Advocacy Center at Show Low Days, and then tomorrow I'm going down to the valley and I'm doing a comedy show at someone's house for a private birthday party. So I'm a private comedian, a comedian for money.

Speaker 5:

So that's awesome. And that is so perfect. And you know there's also we do want to mention too, because tomorrow is Flag Day. Let's all remember that it's Flag Day tomorrow and it's also the 250th birthday of the Army the US.

Speaker 5:

Army 250 years old tomorrow and it's Flag Day, so a lot of patriotism will be shown up here in the White Mountains. Now we want to put out there that there will be some protesters up here and please do not engage them. Please be nice to them, don't even whatever. Just ignore them. Okay, if there's protesters that you're not thrilled with, just ignore them. Okay. But a lot of people are planning on having their flags on their trucks and being super, super patriotic and just driving around town, especially on Saturday.

Speaker 1:

Flag day.

Speaker 5:

Fly your flags everyone.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and happy birthday Army.

Speaker 5:

Thank you so much to everyone that served this country.

Speaker 1:

What's happening? Hot stuff, all right, janine. What's happening?

Speaker 4:

in the White Mounds.

Speaker 5:

There's so much happening?

Speaker 1:

I don't think we'll be able to get it all in, I mean it's going to be hard for people to pick and choose.

Speaker 5:

It's crazy. There's just stuff everywhere. Show Low Days. I'm super excited. Show Low Days. Oh my goodness. The great music, the great food and you know what. It's great for the whole family. And the really cool thing is they've got the duck pluck there this year. Yes, you know, they make sure you've got your ducks and the duck pluck is there. They're going to raise money for Pet Allies, which I love. We've got Cal Ranch doing great stuff all weekend for 4-Hers.

Speaker 3:

Yes, Like yes.

Speaker 5:

Raising money for the 4-H. We all love the 4-H, so Cal Ranch such a big supporter of the 4-H and we so love the good work that they do for them. Just really, really awesome. And you know I always round up my change for that and it's awesome at Cal Ranch, so kudos to them. And then also, you know, we have all the patriotic stuff going on. People are going to be flying their flags because it's Flag Day on Saturday.

Speaker 5:

That's right, and it's so, all of your military and veterans. Let's give them all a hug. Let's get them a donut.

Speaker 1:

You know something like that. You know, Get them breakfast. It's the least we could do.

Speaker 5:

And fly your flags on your truck all weekend. That'd be cool.

Speaker 1:

Heck, yeah. Well, sweet, and are you going to be able to make it to SHOLO days or you're too busy?

Speaker 5:

I've got a big birthday party in my backyard for a four-year year old Mikhailo. Happy birthday.

Speaker 1:

Happy birthday. Yeah, I'm excited for Show Low Days, that's. Don't forget Frontier Park this Friday and Saturday, from 9 to 9.

Speaker 5:

Yes, check that out. And Father's Day yes, and then Father's Day. All this stuff is going on and we have our dads and I hope you get honored. You're a good dad, oh well, thank you.

Speaker 1:

It's an honor being a dad, so thank you to my kids for letting me be their dad. Aw Well, janine, that's what's happening in the White Mountains. All right, janine, it's time for some fun facts. On this Fun Fact Friday Father's Day edition. Did you know in Germany some Father's Day traditions include getting dad together with friends to pull wagons of beer and wine through the street? Oh nice, that sounds like fun. In Mexico they do a 21K for fathers. It's called Dia del Padre and it's a 21K race, half marathon. That is one Father's Day event. I do not want to participate in.

Speaker 5:

They actually do that, yeah, wow.

Speaker 1:

That's crazy. Yeah, it's in Mexico City. Thousands of dads celebrate Dia del Padre. Yeah wow. It's a major family fun event. What do you think is the most common Father's Day gift? Father's Day gift.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, I don't know. I don't know.

Speaker 4:

No not even a guess, a tie.

Speaker 1:

There you go it is a necktie followed.

Speaker 5:

That's the last thing I would buy, but a tie, especially up here in the White Mountains. Who wears a tie? No one wears a tie.

Speaker 1:

But it's followed by tools, sporting goods and gift cards. There, you go and, according to surveys, most dads say they actually prefer quality time with family over physical gifts for Father's Day. Do you agree with that, or you think they're just saying that to be nice?

Speaker 5:

I think time and giving them a call and spending time is huge for dads. You know, I really do, I really do.

Speaker 1:

Yes, I think. Yep, it's definitely the least you can do this Father's Day. If you're not able to be with your dad, give them a call, or you know a call, or a text. Probably a call is more personal.

Speaker 5:

Yes, yes, yeah, a call, or a text, a text. Yeah, yeah, maybe call them. I love you, dad, you're so awesome.

Speaker 4:

Yeah.

Speaker 5:

And it's, you know, a lot of it. It's just spending the time and taking time and hopefully a lot of people are barbecuing with their dads, doing all kinds of fun, stuff them and spoiling them this weekend.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely.

Speaker 5:

Because we want to know how we appreciate our dads. Yes, absolutely, and my dad's up in Oklahoma so usually we're kind of together on Father's Day, but he's up there right now. They'd gone to Branson and stuff, so that's pretty cool. So I'll be talking to him on the phone.

Speaker 1:

All right. Well, that was some fun Father's Day facts. On this Fun Fact, friday, janine, I hope you have. I am so excited to have some guests in studio with me.
