The Morning Brew with Chris Bennett

From River Rescues to Burger Stands: Stories that Warm the Heart

Chris Bennett Episode 78

What happens when university students on a peaceful canoe trip suddenly become horse rescuers? That's just one of the heartwarming stories we explored on this week's Taco Bout Something Good Tuesday. Our listeners were moved by the tale of two quick-thinking students who saved a struggling foal from drowning and reunited it with its mother – proving that heroes emerge in the most unexpected moments.

The good news continued with Janine sharing the story of Will Burrell, a young entrepreneur from Long Island whose "Will's Smash Burgers" stand lets veterans eat for free while donating profits to veterans' charities. Not only is Will making a difference, but according to reports, his burgers are "unbelievably good!" We also smiled at the rescue of a baby raccoon found nestled in a semi-truck engine, which sparked a humorous discussion about Janine's secret wish to own exotic pets like raccoons and sugar gliders – something Arizona law unfortunately prohibits.

Community connections took center stage as we previewed the upcoming Pinedale Chuckwagon Festival on August 2nd, where ten authentic chuckwagons will cook traditional meals over open fires in dutch ovens. With homemade pies featuring "mile-high" apple creations containing up to seven pounds of fruit, this event benefits local firefighters while celebrating pioneer traditions. We wrapped up with our popular segments including "This or That" summer leisure preferences and "Are You Smarter Than a Redneck" back-to-school trivia, keeping our Morning Brew community entertained and connected. Tune in next week for more stories that remind us of the good in everyday life, and don't forget to grab tickets for Chris's Comedy Birthday Bash this Saturday at the Show Low Elks Lodge!

Speaker 1:

From the Horn Auto Center Studios Chris Bennett and the Morning Brew. It's Taco Bout Something Good.

Speaker 2:

Tuesday Janine and I'm going to start by sharing my good news story.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I think you'll love this because I know you love horses.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I do.

Speaker 1:

Well, there were two University of Calgary students that were on a canoe trip and they're paddling down. And it was just relaxing and it turned into a life-saving mission. Anna and Ava were enjoying the sun when they spotted a horse standing in the river under the bridge, and nearby they saw the reason A young foal was struggling in deep water and it was pinned up against a bridge and it was barely keeping its head above surface. So without hesitation, the two students sprang into action and Gleag, a former lifeguard, swam out and supported the foal, while the other one helped steer them to safety. But once they got the foal to land, janine, a new problem appeared. The mother had ran off, so every time they tried to leave, the foal would go back in the water. So the women gently loaded the exhausted animal into their canoe and took them on a little river cruise, and he even took a little nap on the way. And eventually they connected with the local First Nations community member who identified the foal, and they helped reunite the foal with his mom.

Speaker 2:

How adorable. I love that one, yeah.

Speaker 1:

So thanks to those two brave paddlers with big hearts, there you go.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's an awesome one.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, all right, janine, let's hear your good news on this. Talk About Something Good Tuesday All right.

Speaker 2:

I love these ones because they kind of inspire us all to maybe think about doing this. You always see those lemonade stands, right? Well, a kid in Long Island his name is Will Burrell is in the news after he launched his own burger stand letting all veterans eat for free. It's called Will's Smash Burgers and he was given the profits all to the veterans-related charities and other people then just swamped his burger stand because of that. Super, super cool.

Speaker 2:

And this is the other funny thing when you look it up Will's Smash Burgers, they said the burgers were just unbelievably good. That's another side note. And then I also love how many of you guys just love all the raccoon videos you know on Instagram and all the baby people who have raccoons as pets. I wish I could have a raccoon, but I guess it's not allowed here in Arizona. Just FYI, I know A sheriff's department near Denver shared this photo of a wildlife official saving a baby raccoon that had crawled up into a semi, sleeping in the engine compartment and it didn't want to come out. It was nice and warm in there. They eventually got it to come out and it's hanging from the little pole. You can just see it and they release it back into the wild. It's so cute.

Speaker 1:

I love raccoons.

Speaker 2:

They kind of scare me. Oh, they're darling. They're like really super cool funny cats, but better than cats, I think better than cats. That's just my take on it.

Speaker 1:

I love that you know that they are not allowed as pets. That means you've looked into it. Dang it? Oh, yes, I have.

Speaker 2:

No, I've looked into it and I've looked into squirrels, I've looked at. Yeah, we're not allowed to do that in Arizona. A lot of States don't allow you know little rabbit animals to be used as pets and that kind of thing. We keep them in the wild. But I love raccoons.

Speaker 1:

Dang it. Your husband should be thanking the state of Arizona for those laws.

Speaker 2:

So now I'm kind of working toward a sugar glider. If you buy a domestic sugar, have you seen the cool sugar?

Speaker 1:

gliders. They are adorable, oh I love them.

Speaker 2:

I know I know I have problems. It's because my donkey still hasn't given birth and I'm just amazed. I know she just I think I've misread her cues and it's more my fault now and I'm just now I'm ignoring her, I'm not even. No, I'm checking her all the time.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, she's. I hope you give birth I know Dang it. Well, thank you for sharing some good news on this.

Speaker 2:

Talk about something good Tuesday and having fun with this. Have a good one, Chris.

Speaker 1:

Love you. Bye, ok, bye, bye. Good morning, it's the morning brew with Chris. Who's that? Who's this? Who's that, who's this?

Speaker 3:

Good morning, my friend.

Speaker 1:

Oh, it's our favorite cowboy from Eager. It's Virgil the Cowboy. Last we talked to you, you were going in for your monthly medical checkup at the hospital. How'd everything go? Everything is just fine.

Speaker 3:

Heck yes. But uh, you said, talk about something Tuesday.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, talk about something good Tuesday, what you got for us.

Speaker 3:

Um, the girls got mad because one of the owner part of the owner was yelling at me.

Speaker 1:

One of the owner of the ranch was yelling at you. Yeah, oh no, and so all your cowgirls got upset.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, and they want he listens to the station, so they want to send him a message.

Speaker 1:

Oh no, I don't want to be in the middle of your guys' beef.

Speaker 3:

They want Johnny Paycheck. Take this job and shove it.

Speaker 1:

Okay, you're trying to get me in trouble, virgil, he's listening up there, okay.

Speaker 2:

He's a nice guy.

Speaker 1:

He's not going to be mad at me. All right, Virgil and the cowgirls. Here's Johnny Paycheck. Take this job and shove it.

Speaker 3:

Have a great day.

Speaker 1:

Bye, you too Bye. Good morning. It's the Morning Brew with Chris. Who's this? This is Jed Jed. Where are you from Jed Up here in Show Low? Heck yeah, Jed from Show Low, calling to win the two tickets to Chris Bennett's comedy birthday bash from Comfort Fit Dentures Is that right Fire away, yes, sir.

Speaker 1:

All you have to do is play a little game with me. It's just this or that. Today is Summer Leisure Day, so I'm going to ask you some summer leisure, this or that, a hammock in the shade or a lounge chair in the sun.

Speaker 3:

A hammock in the shade, definitely.

Speaker 1:

I burn too easy. No way am I doing a lounge chair in the sun, a lake day with friends or a solo pool float with headphones.

Speaker 3:

Oh, a lake day with friends.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah, the solo pool float sounds a little bit easier. But you can't pass up a lake day with friends. Ice tea, absolutely Iced tea all day, or frozen margarita on repeat.

Speaker 3:

Frozen margarita on repeat, oh goodness.

Speaker 1:

I'd be in bed too early if I did that. And last one flip-flops everywhere or barefoot all summer.

Speaker 3:

Flip-flops everywhere.

Speaker 1:

I just can't have anything between my toes. I'm going to be barefoot all summer. I think the bottom of my feet are too sensitive. Chris, that's right. That's right. Well, this was Jed from Show Low, and that was Summer Leisure Day, this or that. And, jed, you won two tickets. Compliments to Comfort Fit Dentures to my comedy birthday bash this Saturday at the Show Low Elks Lodge. The show starts at 7. Doors. Alberto's Food Truck and the bar open up at 5.30 pm and get ready to laugh and have a good time. And if you weren't as lucky as Jed, you could get your tickets at chrisbennettcomedycom. What station hooked you up, jed? 92.5. You know it. Arrrr, good morning. It's the Morning Brew with Chris. Who's this?

Speaker 4:

Good morning Champion.

Speaker 1:

Chris Heck. Yeah, it's Brian from Pinedale on this Taco Bout, something Good Tuesday and you guys have something real good coming up. Yeah, good tasting and good. Yes, that's right, not this weekend, but next weekend, august 2nd. What's going on in Pinedale?

Speaker 4:

All the great ladies in Pinedale are baking pies homemade, traditional pies. They're going to sell them at the community center on August 2nd during the Chuckwagon event, that's right, the Chuckwagon event.

Speaker 1:

if you have never been, it is one of the coolest small-town traditions I have ever seen and it raises money for the Pinedale volunteer firefighters and helps them in purchasing life-saving equipment, and so it's a really great cause. And basically you go back in time and people have these truck wagons, like the pioneers did, and they're cooking over what's it called? It's over juniper oak or charcoal, but then what's the device that they use? Oh, dutch oven, oh, dutch oven, that's it called. It's over juniper oak or charcoal, but then what's the device that they use?

Speaker 4:

Oh, dutch oven, Dutch oven, that's right.

Speaker 1:

That's the best part. Yeah, and you guys, this year you have ten chuck wagons and so people can go around and just they get to vote on which chuck wagon is the most authentic. Oh, nice, okay, so you basically go back to the future, back in time, check out the truck wagons, then you can see what each truck wagon has to offer as far as food, and then you take your ticket and then you buy food from that truck wagon Right.

Speaker 4:

They start selling tickets at 10 o'clock. At noontime dinner is served when all the wagons definitely have their food cooked Right right. And then you find a place to sit and eat and enjoy the cuisine.

Speaker 1:

Nice, get there early so you can get your tickets and then, in addition to the Chuckwagon Festival going on at the same time, which is at the Pinedale Community Center the Pinedale Community Center, like you said, they are selling pies as well to raise money for the Pinedale Library and the Heritage House, which is where I filmed my comedy. Special Small Town, famous, yes.

Speaker 4:

We need to get people to come out. We've got ten wagons. We do not want to waste food.

Speaker 1:

We don't want to have any food left over.

Speaker 4:

Or pies, or pies. We need the pies gone too.

Speaker 1:

Yes, so everybody mark your calendars for August 2nd. Head to Pinedale. Starting at what time?

Speaker 4:

Be there by 10 o'clock at the latest, because they start selling tickets for food at 10 o'clock and if you want what you want to eat, you better get there to get the ticket early, and then the food starts being served at 12 o'clock and there's activities there. They have a little band going on and there's some other vendors from the local market that come, and so there's activities to keep you busy until dinner's served.

Speaker 1:

Nice, and how much are tickets for the food?

Speaker 4:

$20 for the food on the truck wagons, the pies they're all different prices because they got some that are a mile high. Apple pie I found out from one lady she put seven pounds of apples in that pie. There's multi-berry pies, there's banana cream pies, coconut pies, there's any kind of pie you can imagine, because a lot of these pies are made from the ladies that are handed down from one family to another for traditional recipes.

Speaker 1:

Heck yeah. This is the Pinedale Chuckwagon Festival and Pie Sale happening August 2nd, and I hope to be able to make it buddy. It's going to be great.

Speaker 4:

Oh, you'll make it. I know you will, because I know you love food.

Speaker 1:

We've been talking about the chuckwagon festival and pie sale that's happening august 2nd at the pinedale community center. For something good tuesday to talk about. You know it, and based on that I thought we would play a little. This or that, we're gonna do this or that. Chuckwagon and pie questions oh boy, let's go all right. Uh, this or that pie, apple pie or peach pie yeah, I do love peach pie, though. One giant pie or a dozen mini pies, one big pie? Oh, there you go, eat pie with a fork or just grab it with your hands.

Speaker 4:

Fork, actually a spoon. You need some ice cream to go with it. Oh yeah.

Speaker 1:

It's apple pie and a mincemeat pie, or chocolate cream pie, mmm, chocolate cream pie?

Speaker 4:

Oh, absolutely yeah, because girls love chocolate.

Speaker 1:

Oh, and then for the chuck wagon, this or that beef or pork, I'll take the beef. Yeah, and what's nice, this year at the Chuckwagon Festival, all your cooks are going to be able to cook with beef and pork and chicken, right?

Speaker 4:

Correct. They actually got a cattle donated to the festival for the fire department this year and they're giving it up to the wagons.

Speaker 1:

Heck yeah.

Speaker 4:

So we're going to have beef, plenty of beef this year.

Speaker 1:

That was this or that with Brian from Pinedale about the Chuckwagon and.

Speaker 2:

Pie Festival.

Speaker 1:

Happening August 2nd. We love you, buddy.

Speaker 4:

Thank you. Have a great show today, chris. Hopefully Saturday goes great for you too. If I don't talk to you before then, Heck, yeah, sounds good, buddy.
