The Morning Brew with Chris Bennett

Chuckwagons, Country Stars & Comedy: Small Town Wins Big

Chris Bennett Episode 82

Send us a text

The power of community shines throughout this lively episode as Chris Bennett takes us behind the scenes of his recent comedy show at the Elks Lodge. What began as entertainment transformed into meaningful community impact, raising over $1,500 for local youth charities. The genuine emotion in Chris's voice as he thanks those who supported the event—including his parents who attended—reveals just how much these connections matter in small-town life.

Brian from Pinedale drops by to promote this Saturday's Pinedale Chuckwagon Festival, a nostalgic journey back to pioneer days with authentic chuck wagon cooking. The $20 plates will benefit the volunteer fire department, while the simultaneous "Pies for Pinedale" event supports the local library and heritage preservation. These dual celebrations perfectly capture how rural communities maintain their identity while looking toward the future.

The show takes exciting turns with a surprise call from Nashville recording artist Jake Bush, who shares details about his upcoming album "Barroom Brothers and Sisters" releasing August 8th. When Jake reveals his new single "Hole in the Wall" was written by George Strait and his son, it adds a touch of country royalty to this already special episode. Meanwhile, comedian Crickette Gill offers a heartwarming perspective about performing in Show Low, describing how her initial hesitation about a "conservative redneck town" quickly transformed into admiration for the welcoming audience.

Through trivia games, table topics, and motivational quotes, Chris weaves together the diverse personalities that make small-town radio so authentic. This episode isn't just about entertainment—it's about the threads that connect us, the laughter we share, and the ways we support each other through community events and shared experiences.

Ready to experience some chuck wagon cooking or hear Jake Bush's George Strait-penned track? Follow along with the Morning Brew and discover why these small-town connections create such lasting impact. What local event will you be supporting this weekend?

Speaker 1:

From the Horn Auto Center Studios Chris Bennett and the Morning Brew. Good morning, it's the Morning Brew with Chris.

Speaker 2:

Who's this? Good morning. Comedian champion, Chris Bennett.

Speaker 1:

Heck, yes, it's Brian from Pinedale. Thank you so much, brian, for your help in our amazing comedy show at the Elks Lodge this Saturday. You lent me some curtains to help make the room a little bit more fancy. There you go, and it really worked. We missed you, though.

Speaker 2:

Well, I'm glad when I turned the radio on this morning I could hear you. You survived your own party. I did?

Speaker 1:

I did Barely. Oh my gosh, brian. It was one of the best nights of my life and it was. I don't know why I'm getting so emotional, but any time I received this type of support and love from the community and it just means so much to me, and my mom and dad were there. Oh, they came, oh my gosh, and they had a great time. Our our feature comedian, cricket Gill from the Valley, was phenomenal. She might have been a crowd favorite I knew people would love her and she just blew the roof off the place and then, with 20 minutes of great stand-up comedy. And then Ryan Knee Miller from America's Got Talent came in and just destroyed for an hour. Oh wow, oh my gosh. It was so great.

Speaker 1:

And the best part was we had the Elks. Riders were providing security for the event and we did a 50-50 raffle. And they do a lot of amazing stuff for the youth and the community through their Elks Foundation charities and the local youth charities helping kids, give kids backpacks that need it, going, going back to school and shop with the cop-type programs and we were able to raise over $1,500. Oh great, yeah, so the 50-50, and I think the pot was $1,600. And the lady that won or no, I think it was $1,300. The lady that won donated her 50-50 right back to us. Back to us, oh, that's right back to it. Back to it, oh, that's great. So it all went to our youth here in the White Mountains. So it was just a night to remember. And then afterwards I went to Rocky's for the after party and karaoke, and I don't remember that part.

Speaker 2:

So I got a question to ask you yeah. Do the comedians? Do they get surprised by the small town crowds? That?

Speaker 1:

you get. Oh my gosh, the comedians rave about the fans up here and they are just. They all want to come back immediately after performing up here and they just rave about our audiences up here and they absolutely love it. So we're going to be able to keep bringing more great comedians up. My next one is august at toryon. So that's uh, just uh, for toryon residents. And then, and then back to hometown famous, yeah, pinedale in september with darren carter, the party starter. It's going to be great. We are back with brian from pinedale who, uh, is going to talk about an amazing event going on in Pinedale this Saturday, over at the Pinedale Community Center, starting at 10 am. It's the Pinedale Chuckwagon Festival. Tell us about the Pinedale Chuckwagon Festival, best friend.

Speaker 2:

Okay, the Pinedale Chuckwagon Festival and the Pies for Pinedale. It's two events, two separate events, but they happen at the same time. The Chuckwagon event starts at 10 o'clock. Also the Pies for Pinedale. It's two events, two separate events, but they happen at the same time. The truck wagon event starts at 10 o'clock Also, the pies for Pinedale starts at 10 o'clock. I do suggest people get there early. It is at the Pinedale Community Center at 1248 Pinedale Road. Tickets are $20 for the meals and we have a lot of beef on the plates this year. People, you need to come out and see some great cuisine that cooks cook from off the truck wagons.

Speaker 1:

It is such a cool small-town event and we just had Pioneers Day not too long ago and this is like going back in time to the days of the Pioneers and they're cooking amazing meals, so make sure you check that out.

Speaker 2:

That is at pinedale and uh, all the uh the proceeds go towards the uh volunteer fire department out there correct and all the proceeds from the pinedale pies goes to the library and pinedale heritage which keeps the grounds up and the building up and we're getting it renovated. We got some grants this year for an historic building to be re-renovated.

Speaker 1:

Oh yes, if you have not been there, you got to check it out. It is a really cool building and this is a fun event, so mark your calendars for this Saturday. Head on down to Pinedale. I know I'm going to be there. How about, before I let you go, you want to play a game? A little table topics? Yeah, go ahead. Go ahead. Ask the questions.

Speaker 2:

I'll answer them. You ready to go? Yep, what's your favorite?

Speaker 1:

winter activity Favorite winter activity Sleeping Sleeping yes.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 1:

No, not me, that's too dangerous. Okay, it's fun.

Speaker 2:

Next one All right, who gives you the best advice? My wife, my wife. Yeah, there you go, yep. Last one If you won an expensive trip somewhere, what destination would you choose?

Speaker 1:

I love Hawaii and I like staying in America because I'm scared about leaving the country, because I don't know the rules everywhere else, so I don't want to get in trouble. So I would say Hawaii, what about you?

Speaker 2:

I guess I'd have to go that one too if I had to stay in the country. I want to go up and see Washington State and Oregon sometime too, though Nice.

Speaker 1:

That was Table Topics with Brian from Pinedale.

Speaker 2:

Brian, we love you, best friend, and I'm looking forward to the Chuckwagon Festival and the Pies for Pinedale this Saturday and I'm glad I can hear you on the radio this morning that you survived your own party. That's right.

Speaker 1:

Speaker 1:

Well, my birthday's not till tomorrow.

Speaker 5:

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that was just my bash, but my actual birthday is tomorrow, so you can wish me happy birthday tomorrow. Okay will do. What did you do this weekend?

Speaker 5:

Speaker 1:

She's like, really yeah, I'm like, yeah, man life. I told her about the show and all that. She's like, really yeah, I'm like, yeah, man, life's gotten so much better after 50. Don't give up on yourself.

Speaker 1:

Yep, life just gets sweeter with age. The yee-yee it is now time for. Are you Smarter Than a Redneck? Today we're going to do some George Strait trivia. They're multiple choice. If you know the answer, say your name. That's your buzzer. Here we go. In which song does Strait sing? Everything that I've got is just what I've got on. Was it All? My Exes Live in Texas, amarillo by Morning. Famous Last Words of a Fool. Or I Can Still Make Cheyenne, paul Amarillo by Morning.

Speaker 1:

Is it? Am of Hearts? Oh, go ahead. Ace in the Hole Band, ace in the Hole Band, gosh, dang it. I picked the wrong category this morning. I think, yeah, man, where did George Strait elope with his high school sweetheart, paul Paul, mexico, was it Mexico? Gosh, three for three. I got swept. I am not smarter than a redneck. Congratulations, paul. Good morning, it's the Morning Brew with Chris. Who's this?

Speaker 3:

This is Jake Bush.

Speaker 1:

Holy moly, jake Bush, nashville recording artist and country artist based out of Paul from Beaumont's home state, texas. Oh my gosh, thank you so much for calling us. We were introduced to you by our friend Paul from Beaumont and I absolutely love your music, jake. Thanks, man, I'm glad I could call in. Yeah, I understand you have a new song that just released and you have a new album coming out. Tell us about the new album and when that's coming out and how we can get our hands on that.

Speaker 3:

Man. The new album comes out August 8th. We're going to be throwing a big old party down here in Houston as well as touring a tour off of the album. The album's going to be called Barroom Brothers and Sisters. It took me about two years to pick all the songs and write all the songs and record them. So, super proud, I cut it up in Nashville. It's going to be out the 8th and it'll be available everywhere, streaming on all the digital platforms, as well as hard copy vinyls and CDs. So you'll be able to get all that on my website, jakebushofficialcom.

Speaker 1:

Heck yeah. And you have a new song from that album that you just released called Hole in the Wall. Tell us a little bit about how that song came about and what that means to you.

Speaker 3:

Man, I got that song sent to me by a friend of mine because Daryl Singletary was singing the demo on it, and when we went to record the song we didn't know who wrote it, and so, searching around, we found out that the king of country music, george Strait, wrote it with his son and Monty Criswell. And, man, it just fit the vibe of the album and it was the last song we recorded for it, so it just actually fit like a glove for the record.

Speaker 1:

This song was written by the king.

Speaker 3:

It was, and his son yep.

Speaker 1:

Holy moly, jake, this is amazing. Can we play it on our little small town station here in Show, low Arizona?

Speaker 3:

Heck, yeah, you can.

Speaker 1:

Heck yeah, everyone, make sure you follow jakebushofficialcom for more information.

Speaker 3:

It's Jake Bush with Hole in the Wall. Thank you so much, jake, and please continue to call in and let us spin some more of your music.

Speaker 3:

Absolutely man Appreciate the love.

Speaker 1:

Good morning. It's the Morning Brew with Chris. Who's this? This is.

Speaker 2:

Cricket.

Speaker 1:

Gill Holy moly, cricket Gill, our feature comedian for Chris Bennett's stand-up comedy birthday bash. That was this past Saturday at the Show Low Elks Lodge. Over 226 of our closest friends came to laugh and have a good time and it was such a good show, cricket and I had a caller call in earlier, brian from Pinedale, and he says what do your comedians think of our small town audiences out here? So tell us a little bit about your experience up here and what you thought.

Speaker 4:

Okay, well, you already know what you told me before I came up here.

Speaker 1:

I did. I like to give the comedians kind of a lay of the land to just let them know, and I don't like politics. So that's the main thing. But I worded it in a way.

Speaker 4:

Am I able to tell them what you told me? Yeah, go ahead, you can say it. Chris told me that it was a conservative redneck town and I, being a small girl from the south side of Chicago, have no idea what a conservative redneck is. So I was Googling it all week, you know, trying to figure out what I was in for and remember what I said. When you told me that, I said do they know that I'm black?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they knew that you were on the fire. You know what you said.

Speaker 4:

What did I say?

Speaker 1:

Not yet. Oh, you said what did I say? Not yet. You said not yet. I shouldn't have texted that.

Speaker 4:

I was just being funny when you said that I was like uh-oh, and then the picture on the flyer was in black and white. I'm like this is not working. And then, but I tell you, Go ahead.

Speaker 4:

But I tell you guys, I didn't even have any expectations. I was like I'm just going to do it and just pray that it all turns out for the best. And from the moment I got there, everyone in that town that I came across was just cool. Everyone was so cool. I was just like, oh my God, this is the most chill conservative redneck town I've ever been in. And the show, the crowd, oh my God, I just had to hug every one of them. They were phenomenal. They were phenomenal. They were ready to laugh, they were ready to party, they were engaged. They were so supportive it was. I absolutely want to come back. Like I want to come back tomorrow. Yeah, come back.

Speaker 1:

You could just hang out on the morning brew with me Anytime you want. Everybody that was at the show wants you to come back. Cricket, Thank you so much for coming to our small town and I'm glad you felt the love that Show Low has here. It's a great community filled with great people and I'm so thankful you were able to come and make them laugh their socks off.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, and I hope to come back again and bring some more folks with me, some more funny folks. Absolutely, let's have a good time.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely. Make sure you follow my best friend, cricket Gill, on all socials. What's your social handle? Aliens Don't Like Hot Sauce? Aliens Don't Like Hot Sauce? Go ahead and give her a follow, show her some support and hopefully we'll have her back up here real soon with some funny friends.

Speaker 3:

All right, I her back up here real soon with some funny friends. Alright, I love you guys.

Speaker 1:

I love you Cricket. Thanks so much. Bye, ciao, bye. On the phone we have our best friend, dave Ramsey from Show Low for Boo or Cool. Dave, you were at the comedy show at the Elks Lodge this Saturday Boo or Cool, totally cool, totally cool. You know it. Speaker 3:

Speaker 1:

All right, don't watch the clock, do what it does, keep going. Sam Levison boo or cool, cool, yeah, I think that's a cool one. Will Rogers said even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there. Boo or cool Cool yeah, I think that's really cool. Be stronger than your strongest excuse Cool Cool. Oh man, you haven't had one boo yet. All right, success is 1%. Inspiration, 99% avoiding social media.

Speaker 3:

That one's boo. Everybody's avoiding social media that one's boo.

Speaker 1:

Everybody's on social media. I had to get you to just do one boo, otherwise it wouldn't be boo or cool, that was boo or cool. Motivational quote edition. What do you think our motivational quote for the week should be the second one? Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there, will Rogers.
