The Morning Brew with Chris Bennett

The Rattlesnake Waltz: Ashley Westcott Premieres Her True-Life Country Ballad

Chris Bennett Episode 102

Send us a text

Morning radio magic unfolds as Chris connects with Jineane, who shares positive news about her recovery from a horse accident. Despite needing another week before suture removal and still being on crutches, her optimism shines through—especially when talking about her adorable new baby donkey, Poppy, whom she describes as being "like a stuffed animal."

The conversation shifts to relationship territory when Chris reads a letter from a young woman distressed after her boyfriend devoured all eight homemade jalapeño poppers without saving her any. Janine's practical advice cuts through the drama: "This is not something to put your tennis shoes on and run away from." Her down-to-earth perspective reminds listeners that while consideration matters in relationships, some issues simply require better communication rather than major concern.

The highlight of the show arrives when Nashville recording artist and Taylor Snowflake resident Ashley Westcott joins to premiere her new single "Rattlesnake Waltz." Ashley reveals the chilling true story behind the song—her husband once woke up after passing out while ranching to find a rattlesnake coiled on his belt buckle. This exclusive first play gives listeners a taste before the song's official release on streaming platforms the following day. The hosts wrap things up with a superhero-themed "Boo or Cool" game celebrating International Read Comics in Public Day, proving that from serious health updates to relationship advice to musical premieres, this Morning Brew delivers the perfect blend of substance and fun to kickstart your day.

Have you experienced Ashley Westcott's music yet? Catch her performing tonight at the House in Show Low from 5:30-8:30, and don't forget to pre-save "Rattlesnake Waltz" before its release tomorrow!

Speaker 1:

From the Horn Auto Center Studios Chris Bennett and the Morning Brew, Janine, you over there?

Speaker 2:

Yes, I am. How are you Chris?

Speaker 1:

I'm doing great on this Thursday morning. You weren't here yesterday. Give us a little update on how your leg's healing up from your horse accident.

Speaker 2:

Good, good, good. You know what? I was really pleased. Everything looks good, although they didn't take my sutures out yet. He says it needs another week, so I need to run down next Wednesday, but it's okay. You know what? I'm really happy with the progress. It's been a long month, but yeah, so I just have to, because wounds are a funny thing. So, yeah, he's like nope, sutures need to wait another week.

Speaker 1:

I'm such a chicken. Are you going to need rehab to get your strength back?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, physical therapy and they said that kind of stuff. So I'm still on crutches now, but hopefully I'll be able to and the bone is healing up well. So all this stuff was good news. It's just slow and you know how impatient I am.

Speaker 1:

Chris. How's the new donkey doing? Maybe that's making lift your spirits up.

Speaker 2:

Yes, the baby donkey. Her name is Poppy.

Speaker 1:

I named her Poppy.

Speaker 2:

And she is the cutest little thing. Oh my God. She's like a stuffed animal. She's so soft and so cute.

Speaker 1:

You'll have to post some pictures for us to see.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I need to I need to she's darling.

Speaker 1:

Well, Janine, it is Thursday. You know what that?

Speaker 2:

That is always. You have no idea how funny that is.

Speaker 1:

You're our relationship advice expert. All right, janine, I'll read the story and when we come back we'll get your advice for this young lady. Last night, I, 21-year-old female, cooked dinner for my boyfriend of almost two years he's 22. Along with the main dish, I made eight jalapeno poppers as an appetizer. I hadn't had them in a long time and was really looking forward to enjoying them. We sat down to watch a movie and while I was still getting settled, he ate all eight, every single one, janine. When I reached for one, the plate was empty, and when I asked why he didn't leave me any, his response was uh, you didn't say you wanted any. I was shocked, janine, because I made the meal for both of us. I didn't think I had to claim my share.

Speaker 1:

He insists I'm overreacting, saying they're just snacks and he was hungry, but I can't shake the feeling it was inconsiderate. Am I blowing this out of proportion or is this a small sign he doesn't always consider my feelings? Janine, I need some advice.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I love your read. That is so funny okay uh, what do you think?

Speaker 1:

what's your I?

Speaker 2:

think she is blowing it up, just chill out on those hot poppers. Yeah, I understand, he's young and he was starving. He's like they're 21 and 22.

Speaker 2:

I mean, you know he's going to, he'll learn some, you know. Oh my gosh, maybe I shouldn't devour all of them, but obviously she's a good cook, so be thankful that he loves what you make. That's really cool, and just move on. Don't just make sure you just say, hey, hon, save a couple of those for me if she knows her boyfriend's ravenous. But this is not something to put your tennis shoes on and run away from. That's just. This is not that big of a deal. She needs to chill.

Speaker 1:

And she's in charge of the food. She can maybe only distribute him how many she wants him to have or just say, hey, next time leave me two, take three-fourths.

Speaker 2:

You know, take three-fourths of it, but leave me two of those. Next time she can talk to him about it. But this is not that big of a deal. It's funny though.

Speaker 1:

I love how you said she's a good cook and she's like making jalapeno poppers. Aren't those just like out of the freezer and you put them in the oven.

Speaker 2:

Well, no, if you make them homemade I'm assuming she maybe made them homemade and put the cream cheese stuff in them and wrapped them in bacon, something like that. Right, that's how I make them, but yeah, so it's one of those things where you know, be happy that you know he loves your cooking and just chill out a little bit. That's not that big of a deal.

Speaker 1:

All right, that was some relationship advice with Janine. She says put the tennis shoes away for a change.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you just need to train them a little bit, you know? Hey, save me some of those. Yeah, a little training, that sounds so bad.

Speaker 1:

Well, Janine, we love you, best friend, have a great day and we'll talk to you tomorrow.

Speaker 2:

You too, chris, have a good one, bye-bye.

Speaker 3:

Tell us what is this song we're going to play and how did this song come about.

Speaker 3:

Well, this is the very first song I ever wrote and it's a true story about when my husband was ranching and he got real sick and he slid off his horse and he passed out under a tree. He said he woke up three times and each time he could hear the ticking of a rattle, get closer and closer and the last time that he woke up a big old black rattlesnake was sitting right there on his belt buckle, just coiled up staring at him.

Speaker 1:

Oh my gosh, and then what it bit him.

Speaker 3:

No, he said, he prayed and he prayed, and it seemed like hours and hours went by and finally that black rattlesnake just slithered away.

Speaker 1:
