Chris Bennett Episode 118

Fall has officially arrived at the Morning Brew, and we're celebrating with a special autumn-themed episode packed with heartwarming stories, country music updates, and the return of fan-favorite characters.

The changing seasons set the perfect backdrop for our fall edition of "This or That" where we discover preferences for apple crisp over pumpkin pie, caramel apples over candy apples, and the universal joy of stealing your partner's cozy hoodies when the temperature drops. These small moments of connection remind us why we love this time of year.

Our Taco Bout Something Good Tuesday delivers two powerful stories that might just restore your faith in humanity. First, we share how South Korean boxer Park Se-hoon traveled to Florida to personally hand over his controversial 1988 Olympic gold medal to Roy Jones Jr. after 35 years, saying through his son, "I had the medal, but it belongs to you." Then, we spotlight country star Jelly Roll's inspiring coaching of his son's flag football team, where his philosophy that "tigers don't lose, tigers learn" reminds us all that setbacks are just stepping stones to growth.

The country music world is buzzing with news that pop star Sabrina Carpenter will make her Grand Ole Opry debut, stirring conversations about tradition versus evolution in Nashville's most hallowed venue. Meanwhile, we welcome back our beloved "Paul from Beaumont," who's been missing from the show while attending truck driving school. His hilarious updates on "teaching the instructor" and his impressive 22-pound weight loss journey had us all cheering.

Join us for these stories and more, including our Hollywood Movie Connection with Jeff Reynolds calling in from the Catalina Film Institute to talk about their upcoming festival this weekend. Subscribe now to start your mornings with good news, great conversation, and the perfect blend of entertainment to kick-start your day!

Oh, my gosh, it's sad to see summer go, but I do love the changing of the seasons. Quick reminder, janine you remember our best friend, tavis McCreary, out of Pinetop? Yes, 13-year-old, he's in the running for the Sports Illustrated Youth Athlete of the Year. He's in the semifinals. He's in 16th place. Only two days left.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 1:

So, youthathleteoftheyearorg Tavis McCreary, give him a vote today. Ah, be great, janine. How about we do a little this or that? Fall edition for the second day of fall, how about that?

Speaker 2:

Let's do it.

Speaker 1:

All right, pumpkin pie or apple crisp. Ooh, apple crisp. Okay, you and I are on the same page on that one. I like it. Caramel apple or candy apple I don't really know what the difference is.

Speaker 2:

Is there a difference? I know, I know caramel, I love caramel. Yeah, I love caramel.

Speaker 1:

I love those Rocky Mountain. Did you ever have those Rocky Mountain candy apples at the mall?

Speaker 2:

back, in the day. Oh yeah, those are so amazing. Oh, so good.

Speaker 1:

Hayride or corn maze Hayride Flannel shirt or oversized sweater Flannel shirt or oversized sweater Flannel shirt. Do you steal your husband's hoodies or his sweaters to keep yourself warm?

Speaker 2:

Hoodies, I do.

Speaker 1:

Yes, I steal his hoodies a lot.

Speaker 2:

I like that he doesn't wear flannel shirts. I love a guy in a flannel shirt. I just think that's like the old Marlboro man thing. But I love a cozy-looking flannel shirt on a guy, but he doesn't like flannel shirts.

Speaker 1:

Come on, clint, let's get him a flannel shirt. All right, and last question Oktoberfest bratwurst or Thanksgiving turkey?

Speaker 2:

Oh, Thanksgiving turkey.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you got to go Thanksgiving, turkey especially. You probably spend it with your family.

Speaker 2:

Oh, of course, yes, absolutely. I love Thanksgiving and all the trimmings and I have to make all grandma's favorites. We call grandma's stuffing my, my brother's, my brother's, literally through the biggest tantrum you've ever seen If I don't make their own flat stuffing for them to take home.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah, uh. Well, that was this or that fall edition with Janine. I feel like we all got to know her A little bit better. All right, janine, it is Taco Bout Something Good Tuesday. So how about I start with today's Taco Bout Something Good news story? Yeah, sounds good. I have two, I don't know which one to pick, one or two, two. Okay, there we go. This is in the sports world, and this one proves it's never too late to make things right. Do you remember the 1988 Seoul Olympics? No, not really.

Speaker 2:

I watched it too late to make things right.

Speaker 1:

Do you remember the?

Speaker 2:

1988 Seoul Olympics. No, not really I watched it.

Speaker 1:

I'm sure I covered it Well. There was a controversial boxing match. Park Se-hoon was awarded a controversial 3-2 boxing victory over American Roy Jones Jr and most viewers believed that Jones clearly won, and even the Olympic announcers called the decision rotten and rumors of bribe judges swirled for years. But the medal stayed with Park, a result he said Park said felt like a nightmare. So Jones went on to become one of boxing's all-time greats, but that missing Olympic gold always lingered. And now, 35 years later, janine Park sought peace, surprising Joan in his hometown of Pensacola, florida, and handed him the gold medals Aw yeah, saying through his son I had the medal, but it belongs to you, oh my gosh, oh, that was that's as you were reading the story.

Speaker 2:

I remembered it. I'm like, yeah, oh, that's cool, that's very cool.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, Jones was fighting back tears and it's just a powerful reminder that integrity lasts longer than any trophy, and it's never too late to make amends.

Speaker 2:

That's too cool. Love that story Well.

Speaker 1:

I'm glad you picked number two.

Speaker 2:

Then, janine, I'm ready for your good news story, okay this one, and then you can you know you could play a Jelly Roll song after it. I just have to talk about Jelly Roll. I so love him. I don't know if you caught his thing at the Vatican oh my gosh singing a hard hallelujah. It was unbelievable, unbelievable at the Vatican. But aside from that, this one's great because Jelly Roll coaches his son's flag football team. Okay, and no one gives a motivational speech better than Jelly Roll.

Speaker 1:

No.

Speaker 2:

His son Noah's team just lost a flag football game. But Jelly had just the right words. After the kids he said hey, listen man, this is part of it, baby. You have good days, you have bad days, and you won't feel the good days unless you have the bad days. Okay, but above everything else, you have fun and you stick together. You are all winners. And the boys were yelling yes, sir, and it's super cool. You have to check it out. But, um, jelly, roll closed out with the philosophy we have from this day forward, the tigers don't lose. The tigers Learn. Tell your teammates, teammates. You love them and you're proud of them. And you're going to come back next week and kick somebody's booty. You know all that kind of stuff. And so, bunny, you know Bunny XO, his wife, she filmed the whole thing. She posted it on TikTok.

Speaker 2:

Oh, man, she goes everyone needs a jelly roll. Pep talk there you go.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you gave me goosebumps. I'm ready to run through a wall, yeah.

Speaker 2:

You need to. You really need to. I'm waiting for them to put a hard hallelujah on. He sings it with that one other guy and my brain is locking up. I can't think of his name, but oh my gosh, it's good it is so good, and he did it in front of the Vatican with all these backup singers. It was like unreal. Yeah, anyway, we'll have to check that out. Anyway, yeah, awesome.

Speaker 1:

Well, janine, thank you so much for spending some time with us on this. Talk About Something Good Tuesday and we'll check in with you tomorrow. Thank you, chris, love ya, bye, bye-bye. It is now time for some country music news. Here's some big headlines from Nashville this week.

Speaker 1:

This week the grand old Opry was stirring up some conversation and some controversy after announcing that pop star that's right, pop star Sabrina Carpenter is going to make her Opry debut October 7th. Yeah, the Expresso singer, who's 26 years old, has seven albums and some major chart hits. Has seven albums and some major chart hits. But some fans have questioned why is the pop singer stepping into the famous Opry circle? And supporters point out that she's collaborated with Dolly Parton and the Opry, I guess, has always welcomed artists beyond the strict country lines, like they've had Paramore, steven Tyler, even Pharrell. But remember, these are just guest appearances, not Opry membership, so they're not giving her an Opry membership. She's just making a guest appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. So tradition and new sounds can still mix under the legendary roof. So that's pretty cool. And we don't play a whole lot of his music on our radio station. But I love this artist, tyler Childers I think that's how you pronounce his last name. He gave 20 fans the memory of a lifetime.

Speaker 1:

After Shriners Hospital fundraiser, ten donors and their plus ones were secretly invited into a practice show at Rupp Arena in Lexington. Dited into a practice show at Rupp Arena in Lexington, and Childers played a full concert just for them and even handed each original donor $1,000 as a thank you. Two different stories, but both prove that country music keeps finding fresh ways to surprise and delight its fans. Pretty juicy country music news for you. Woo, that's my blood. Kapow boom. I said so, yee, yee, yee, yee. Holy moly, paul from Beaumont, everyone's favorite redneck, who has been missing from the morning brew because he's bettering himself, going back to school to become a better truck driver. It's so good to hear from you. Give us some feedback. What's going on?

Speaker 3:

Oh man, look, let me tell you something, man. This instructor's learning all kinds of stuff this week. This guy's learning all kinds of stuff this week.

Speaker 1:

This guy's learning all kinds of stuff. The instructor's learning stuff or you're learning stuff. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2:

No, no, no, he is, he's your teaching.

Speaker 3:

I got him on point. I got him on point.

Speaker 1:

Speaker 1:

Speaker 3:

Yeah Well tomorrow, I'll go up to the doctor's office. Let them give it to me. I'll take my test until one. Awesome, yeah, I'll go. My test until one Awesome, yeah, I'll go up there.

Speaker 1:

Speaker 1:

Speaker 3:

Hey Dave, you ready for me to teach you some more stuff? Okay, give me, okay. Yeah, just a second. Yeah, I'm going to teach you some more stuff. Yeah, just a second. Yeah, I'm basically going to teach you some more stuff.

Speaker 1:

You're not supposed to be teaching the teacher stuff. They're supposed to be teaching you stuff.

Speaker 3:
