The Morning Brew with Chris Bennett
Scarecrow Walk, Show Low Laughs & Small-Town Fun
It’s fall in the White Mountains, and the Morning Brew studio is packed with hometown energy! We were thrilled to welcome some of our favorite best friends from the City of Show Low — Myles Erdmann and Jacob Enfield from Show Low TV and Kevin Johnson from the City’s Parks & Recreation Department — for a fun, laughter-filled morning that proves small-town life is anything but boring.
We kick things off with all things Scarecrow Walk — the creative community event that fills the Meadow with handmade, personality-packed scarecrows starting this weekend. You’ll hear how to join, where to vote, and what makes this one of the most beloved traditions in Show Low.
Then it’s a whirlwind of Halloween fun: Trick-or-Treat Trail, the Spooky Spike volleyball tournament, the free Library Carnival, and a family-friendly Halloween night at the Turn of the Card Community Center. Whether you’re chasing candy, costumes, or community time — there’s something for everyone.
Of course, it wouldn’t be The Morning Brew without some laughs — Paul from Beaumont calls in, Myles gets his redemption shot in Are You Smarter Than a Redneck, and we learn the average person eats a pound of Halloween candy each year (no shame here!).
We also talk about Show Low TV’s new local series “Time Capsule” and “Sound & Color,” which highlight the town’s history, artists, and musicians in a fresh, binge-worthy way.
It’s a feel-good, laugh-loud, totally Show Low kind of morning — packed with fall vibes, friends, and a reminder that community spirit never goes out of season.
🎧 Listen now, follow the show, and share it with your favorite neighbor who loves a good scarecrow and a good laugh.
From the Horn Auto Center Studios, Chris Bennett and the Morning Brew. I am so excited to have some guests in studio with us this morning from the City of Sholo, Sho TV, and Sholo Parks and Recreations Department. We have Miles, Jacob, and Kevin joining us today to talk about some fun things happening in Sholow. Uh this October. First off, uh Miles, uh you were our uh, if if anyone didn't catch us on Facebook Live, make sure you watch the replay because uh Miles and the City of Sholo provided a little eye in the sky, and he was dressed like Top Gun, baby. Looking good. Thanks for that.
SPEAKER_02:Beautiful morning.
SPEAKER_04:Beautiful morning out there. And uh, Kevin, I know uh the City of Sholo has some awesome events coming up, like the uh Scarecrow Walk. Uh, tell us about some of the events uh happening in Sholo this October.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, so we have the Scarecrow Walk that's coming up. Uh, we're getting that all set up. That's gonna be at the Meadow Trail, and that'll be October 18th, all the way until November 1st. We have those, and you guys can go out there and check out the scarecrows, and you'll be able to uh vote as well on the Parks and Rec page. Uh or you can call the Aquatic Center as well to cat to cast your vote at all uh as well.
SPEAKER_04:And it's too it's too late to register for a scarecrow, right? It did end.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah. So you can't register a scarecrow, but you are more than welcome to come and join and watch it.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, and if you guys have not uh done this before, it's one of the coolest, uh, and it's a new tradition that started, I think, about three years ago up here or four years ago. Um, but uh it's just so cool. You get to uh walk the meadow, which is beautiful, and then everyone has their own idea of interpretations for like fun, different, you know, pumpkin displays. And so it's uh it's really cool. So even if you didn't get your scarecrow on the walk, you are gonna want to go and take a walk. And that starts uh uh this weekend. Yeah. Heck yeah. Years going by fast. Awesome. And then October 22nd, we have the trick or treat trail at the Sholo City Park. Uh that's uh for kids 10 and under from 6 to 8.
SPEAKER_05:Uh yes, but tickets will be sold until 7:30. Okay. So you do need a show before 7:30 if you want to check that out.
SPEAKER_04:All right, and there will be a few, a few spooks, but lots of sweet treats and perfect for the young kids. Okay. And then uh you uh you love the sports aspect of Parks and Rec, and you got the spooky spike volleyball tournament. Uh now are uh that's happening uh Saturday, October 25th. Are people still able to sign up and register for that?
SPEAKER_05:Yes, we still have spots open for that. We still have uh a few more spots for teams to join in on that, and uh that'll start at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning on the 25th.
SPEAKER_04:Heck yeah, and you could even dress in costume, you could even be the mascot for a team, which that sounds like something I might be interested in. And then October 30th, we have the Halloween carnival happening at the Sholo Public Library from 3:30 to 6:30, and that's free, and that's uh just all ages for that one as well, or I believe so, yes. Yeah, so all ages and some spooky treats, games, costumes, a lot of fun at the uh public library. And then October 31st, you have the uh friendly uh family Halloween event. Where is that gonna be taking place? Um, let me double check.
SPEAKER_05:I think that's on the turn of the card.
SPEAKER_04:So at the turn of the card community center, that will be from four to eight, and that's a free event, fun family, uh, friendly Halloween games, treats, and music. Yeah, it should be fun. A lot of fun stuff happening for the City of Sholo. And for more information, make sure you follow them on Facebook or check out uh them online, the City of Sholo Parks and Rec Department. All right, it is now time for MI the jerk court, and we have some special judges and jurors joining us today from the City of Sholow and Sholo TV in the City of Sholo Parks and Rec. We have Miles, Kevin, and Jacob. Miles, you're gonna be the main judge and uh and uh Jacob. Yeah, there you go.
SPEAKER_00:New phone too.
SPEAKER_04:All right, he's got his he's got his robe and wig on. He's looking good, and you two are the uh the jurors. I'll read the story, and when we come back, we'll get your ruling. Here we go. Am I the jerk for not budging on brushing my teeth in the kitchen? All right, here's the deal. I live in student apartments with three other roommates, and we share one kitchen and shower room. My room is closer to the kitchen, so I brush my teeth in the kitchen. Also, to prevent occupying the toilet room the other if the other roommates need it. One day, one of my roommates complained about it. He said it's unhygienic because the kitchen sink is where we prepare food and we should not spin in there. I told him it isn't. We also wash our utensils there, which is they have saliva and basically all the bacteria in our mouths. Also, there are four of us. If we all use the shower room in the morning, there will be congestion. Then he simply said he just doesn't feel comfortable seeing people brush teeth there. I told him that if he could find some scientific studies to support his hygienic claims, I would follow. Then I summon a roommate vote, and everyone else says it's fine to brush their teeth in the kitchen. He is now angry and accuses me of being unhygienic and even crowding him out. Am I the jerk? Uh Kevin Jacob, who wants to give their ruling first? You go first.
SPEAKER_00:Uh, I would say not the jerk. Um, there's a bunch of dirty dishes that go in there, so you know, it's it's not that different. Okay, it seems a little gross to me, but what say you, Kevin?
SPEAKER_05:I I'd have to agree, like it there's a lot worse things. I mean, when I lived with roommates, there was worse things than that. So I'd be fine with that. But uh I mean, just dirty dishes wise, but um, yeah, I mean, and especially if you've already had a vote, like, come on, vote them off the island, man.
SPEAKER_04:Right, oh, there we go. And then uh, so we heard from uh the jury deliberation now uh Judge Miles, what say you?
SPEAKER_02:I do have to ask a question. Are these all men?
SPEAKER_04:These are all men, and I do believe they're from another country because he was calling them their flatmates, and I changed it.
SPEAKER_02:Okay.
SPEAKER_04:So I don't know if that changes things.
SPEAKER_02:Oh guys, I mean, yeah, I think I think we're good. I think we're okay.
SPEAKER_04:It's okay to brush your teeth in the kitchen sink. Yes. Okay. All right. In the case of are you the jerk for not budging on brushing your teeth in the kitchen? Not a jerk. Not a jerk. That's right. I also forgot to ask uh on a scale one to ten, how would you rate my reading? Great. That was that was amazing. Yeah, that was really good.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, we're we might be calling you for some voiceovers.
SPEAKER_04:We are back with our best friends from the city of Sho Lo and Sho Lo TV and the parks and rec department. We have Miles, Kevin, and Jacob joining us this morning talking about all the fun events happening in Sho Lo this October. And one of my favorite uh new traditions that has started here in the White Mountains a few years ago is the Scarecrow Walk. It's at the uh meadow, right? Yeah, yeah, and that uh that's gonna start this weekend. It's so much fun. There's a lot of great scarecrows and a lot of great creativity because people basically come up with ideas for the scarecrows and a theme, and then they put them out there. So we're gonna play a game called Scarecrow or Scare No No. I'm gonna name a Scarecrow, and you have to tell me if that was a Scarecrow submitted uh to a Scarecrow walk or a Scare No No. Here we go. First one the Scare Rooster. The Scare Rooster, it was uh uh uh made of pumpkins and made into the shape of a rooster.
SPEAKER_02:I'm gonna say scarecrow.
SPEAKER_04:Scarecrow, it was, and it was actually uh first place winner last year for the scarecrow walk. Okay, there we go, Jacob. Your turn. Um we have this uh the scarecrow formerly known as Prince. Scarecrow formerly? Yeah, I'll say scarecrow. No, no, no, but it would be cool. Yeah, it would have been cool. Yeah, yeah. Who knows? There might be one this year. There's an idea. There's an idea. Okay. All right. Uh Kevin, how about Scram Crow? Scram Crow. No. No, you don't think so. It was. And it was last year. It was it was the third place winner, and it was kind of like an Oscar the Grouch type uh type one. All right, uh, so who after our first round? You're the only one that got it right? Okay. All right, we'll do one more round. Here we go. Uh, how about uh this, Miles? We have the Deadly Magician. The Deadly Magician.
SPEAKER_02:Uh Scarecrow.
SPEAKER_04:It's a second place winner last year. Yeah, yeah. There we go.
SPEAKER_02:I'm remembering all these names.
SPEAKER_04:Dude, he's up. Okay. Uh Kevin and Jacob, it looks like he hasn't won. But just uh for uh uh ceremonial purposes, we'll finish it out. Uh, what about the flannel fanny? The lumberjack lady. Flannel fanny. Not a scarecrow. Not, not, but again, another good idea. Another good idea. And Kevin, last one for you, Dr. Straw Love. Dr. Straw, how I learned to stop the birds and love the corn. Dr. Straw Love. No, no, it is not. But again, some great ideas. And I'm so excited to see what ideas people come up this year for the Scarecrow Walk. So if you're looking for something fun to do with the family, make sure you head out to the meadow this weekend and uh check out the first week at the Scarecrow Walk. And you could also go online and vote for your favorite scarecrows. It's gonna be a lot of fun. Check that out. Good morning. It's the morning brew with Chris. Who's this? Yee yeah! It's everyone's favorite redneck from Beaumont, Texas. Paul, I've been telling my friends at the city of Sholo, Miles, Kevin, and Jacob, all about you all morning. Say hi to our friends.
SPEAKER_03:How y'all doing, Paul?
SPEAKER_04:Paul. Now Miles has met you. He's played you in Are You Smarter Than Redneck? Did you win or lose, Miles? I lost. He lost. It was rigged. It was rigged. But uh, so but I don't think Kevin and Jacob know you too well. In a sentence or two, please give them a little description of who Paul from Beaumont is.
SPEAKER_03:I'm just a I I'm just a guy that likes to have a good time, drink beer, and uh make people laugh.
SPEAKER_04:Heck yeah, good description. And he's uh the only redneck I've ever met that loves to take soaks. That's like a fancy term for bath. And and he likes cats over dogs. He doesn't sound like an authentic redneck. And he puts cucumbers over his eyes and lights candles when he's taking a bath.
SPEAKER_03:True or false? No, bro. No, no, that's false.
SPEAKER_04:I don't do like shih tsus. He does, yeah. He's got a little uh little shih tzu. What uh when was the last time you took a bath? Yesterday. Yesterday, when it's nine. Do you guys take baths? Yeah, I feel like when you become a grown man, you stop taking baths. But I'm like, you know the problem with me, Paul? If I did take a bath, it would take me forever to get out of the bath because it takes me a hard time to get up.
SPEAKER_03:Not now, man. I'm lightening up a little bit.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, he started taking one of those trizepotite or a Zempic or whatever. Yeah, and he's down over 30 pounds. Oh, that's awesome. That's awesome. Heck yeah. Well, Paul, when we come back, uh, why don't we uh give Miles a chance to totally redeem himself uh with some uh uh Are You Smarter Than a Redneck?
SPEAKER_03:Okay, let's do it. Redemption, Tom.
SPEAKER_04:It is now time for Are You Smarter Than a Redneck, the Redemption Series. Last time Miles from Solo TV was on the show. You lost to Paul from Beaumont. This time we are gonna do some Halloween trivia and you have some help. You are allowed to get help from Kevin and Jacob. If you know your uh if you know the answer, say your name. That's your buzzer. And uh if you say the name and you get it wrong on Miles' behalf, I mean that's on you. That's on you. All right, Paul, uh, you ready for some Halloween trivia?
SPEAKER_03:Uh let's do it.
SPEAKER_04:All right, here we go. What was candy corn originally called in the 1880s? Was it A, Chicken Feed, B, Corn Delight, C, Sugar Kernels, or D, Harvest Bites? But Paul? Paul. The sugar kernels? No, it is not sugar kernels. Miles and team. Is it chicken feed? Corn delight or harvest bites? Miles. Miles.
SPEAKER_02:Uh harvest bites.
SPEAKER_04:No, it is chicken feed. Okay. All right. All right, next question. In some U.S. cities, it's illegal to trick or treat if you're over what age? Is it A, 10, B, 12, C, 14, or D 16? Paul? Paul. 16? Is it 16? No, it's either 10, 12, or 14. Jacob. Jacob. 14? No, it's 12, and that's in parts of Virginia and North Carolina. That's lame.
SPEAKER_01:I am 12?
unknown:I know.
SPEAKER_03:So young.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah.
SPEAKER_04:Whatever. Well, don't forget about the all-age uh Halloween events offered by the city of Sholo, Parks and Rec department. All right. Uh, you guys are both tied at zero, so whoever gets the next one right is the winner. It is sudden death. The average American eats about how much candy on Halloween. Is it A, half a pound, B, a pound, C, three pounds, or D, four pounds? Paul? Paul. Half a pound. Is it half a pound? It is not half a pound. It's either one pound, three pound, or four pounds.
SPEAKER_02:Miles. Miles. I'm gonna say one pound. It is one pound and he won it.
SPEAKER_04:He won it fair. A bunch of fatties? Is that what you said? Well, yeah, good. Not everyone has taken a shot that makes them not want candy anymore, Paul.
SPEAKER_03:Come on, bro. One pound?
SPEAKER_04:How many of the little bags you gotta eat? How many of those bags? I don't know, but maybe it's just over the whole month. Is that including the rappers?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, maybe. Little mini bars. Good lord.
SPEAKER_02:Over the whole month. I could see that if it's over the whole month. Yeah, I would think over the whole month.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_05:I thought you're talking about one night.
SPEAKER_04:Well, Miles, congratulations. You totally redeemed yourself, and you are smarter than a redneck. Paul, we love you, best friend. Have a great day.
SPEAKER_03:Thanks, Paul. All right, y'all. Have a great one. Be careful. Bye.
SPEAKER_04:We've been having so much fun with the city of Sholo, Parks and Rec department, and Sholo TV is joining us. Uh, Jacob, I know uh Solo TV has a really cool new series uh going on. Tell us a little bit about that and how people can catch it.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, it's a show called Time Capsule that we do at the local historical society museum with the um the director Claire Thomas. So we get to talk with her about different uh history of Solo. She'll tell us different stories, so it's really fun to learn about all the history, and you can uh find it on the City of Solo's YouTube page or our Facebook page. It's really cool, check it out.
SPEAKER_04:And then uh Miles with Solo TV is also a local musician. His band, The Brighter Still, won the Battle of the Bands uh contest earlier this year. And uh, you have some uh cool news uh for local musicians.
SPEAKER_02:Um well yeah, so we we're always looking for uh uh artists to be on a show called Sound and Color. Um and we do have uh the leader of the Brighter Still, Ryan David Orr. Um we have a show featuring him that's gonna be coming out soon, uh probably within about a week here. Um so be looking for that. That'll be on uh on Facebook and YouTube as well. Um but yeah, if uh and and it doesn't have to be musicians. Um we've we featured uh we did feature Ryan's wife, who is an artist. Uh she does clay, she she paints, she does all kinds of neat stuff. Um we featured uh a sculptor. Um what's his name? Um that's all right, you go look it up. Then uh um yeah, any kind of art, anything, anything that's artistic, if you're a local artist, uh get a hold of me over at the city of Sholo. And uh we'd we'd love to we'd love to feature. We'd love to we've spent about five minutes talking about your art and and get to learn a little bit more about you.
SPEAKER_04:Awesome. And how uh how do they get a hold of you?
SPEAKER_02:Um my email is uh M-E-R-D-M-A-N-N at Sholoaz.gov, or uh you can uh call the front office at City of Sholo and they can get a hold of me.
SPEAKER_04:All right, awesome. Uh it has been so much fun hanging out with my best friends at the City of Sholo, talking about all the great events they have going on. If you want more information, check out the City of Sholo parts and rec page and the City of Sholo page on Facebook.
