The Morning Brew with Chris Bennett
Snooping, Nicknames, And Big Daddy
What happens after the scroll that shouldn’t have happened? We sit with a listener’s gut-punch moment—finding old texts where her boyfriend admits he still isn’t over his ex—and chart a smarter way forward that doesn’t torch trust or self-respect. Instead of racing into a confrontation built on a privacy breach, we talk about slowing the timeline, watching for patterns, and letting people be who they are. If he’s truly present, the daily signals will show it; if he’s not, stepping back becomes the cleanest answer.
From there, we lighten the mood with the brilliant Sari Beliak, a stand-up comic whose silly-smart style has the “birthday cake with rainbow sprinkles” energy we all need. We unpack the surprisingly delicate art of flirty nicknames in a situationship—what’s playful versus premature, why terms like buttercup or hun keep it breezy, and how a well-timed “Big Daddy” can be either a fun bit or a clarity test. Then we play a Halloween edition of Would You Rather that doubles as relationship wisdom: choose the noise you can dance to, not the whisper that wears you down.
You’ll walk away with grounded relationship advice on boundaries, timing, and communication, plus a dose of humor to keep your heart soft when choices get hard. If you’ve snooped, here’s how to reset. If you’re flirting with labels, here’s how to keep it light without losing your voice. And if you’re craving a night of laughs, we’ve got show details that will make your weekend plans easy. Listen, share with a friend who needs a nudge toward clarity, and subscribe for more candid advice and comic relief.
From the Horn Auto Center Studios, Chris Bennett and the morning brew. Janine. Hi. Hi. Hola. Hola. Hola. Happy Thursday. Happy Thursday. Uh, it is Thursday, you know what that means.
SPEAKER_02:Yes, relationship advice.
SPEAKER_00:That's right, with our relationship advice expert, Janine Ford. Probably been there, done that. All right, Janine. I'm gonna read uh this relationship advice request, and when we come back, we'll get your advice for this person. You ready? Yeah, I'm ready. All right, this one's titled Snooping. Uh I, a female 26 and my boyfriend 27, I snooped through my boyfriend's phone this morning and found text from August between him and his best friend where they were talking about still having feelings for their exes. Mine specifically noted that if his ex called him, it would change everything up in his life, and that he doesn't know when he will ever truly get over her. He also oh, I know. He also mentioned that this makes him worried he's with the wrong girl. I think these texts were spurred by his ex getting engaged. I am completely in love with him, and we talk about moving in together next year and getting married. I'm 26 and he's 27. His ex and him broke up over two years ago, and I'm not sure if I should confront him about it, uh, about what I did and what I saw, or just leave it. Please help. What is your advice?
SPEAKER_02:How long have they been together?
SPEAKER_00:These two? Uh, let's see. Uh well, he broke up with his ex two years ago. It doesn't really say how long they've been together, yeah. Yeah, so uh it sounds like about a year, would be my guess.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I don't know. She she snooped, and that to me just gives me that's cringe. You know what I mean? And that's not good. And he might have been just venting to his friend and felt totally different. Like, you know, you and I were kind of chatting about this. I just it's it's one of those deals where she kind of stepped into this bad territory. Uh, you know, maybe she just ignores it, they have a new relationship, but one thing she does is slow, slow, slow it down until she really knows that he is committed and fully into her. I mean, maybe they just give it a couple years and she just slows it down and never says a word and never snoops again. Don't be a snooper.
SPEAKER_00:Don't be because if nothing good is gonna come out of it. Because one, you might find something that you don't like, and then you're gonna have to tell the person that you were snooping and you can't be trusted.
SPEAKER_02:Or you don't tell them, uh, you know, because if you're kind of prideful and you don't tell them and you just slowly work your way out of the relationship. Because the thing is, I don't uh confronting somebody and making them change for you and saying, ooh, I've snooped in your phone, that is all ugly, okay? But if you have some knowledge, maybe you just kind of slowly back off. She could slowly back off and put her running shoes on and run away if she really feels that he doesn't feel for her in the right way and he still does care for the ex strongly. But I I I don't know. To me, it's just one of those ugly situations. She snooped and she got herself in, you know, a real bad position. But let him be himself. The big thing is to let people be who they are, okay? Don't change them out of force or getting, you know what I mean, into I don't like that.
SPEAKER_00:That's great advice, dude. Let them be who they are.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, but she needs to give it more time. Watch him until she gets fully secure, also. And stop snooping. Don't be a snooper.
SPEAKER_00:Don't be a snooper. Yeah. All right. Another great relationship advice from Janine Ford. We love you, best friend. Thanks for having me.
SPEAKER_02:You too, Chris. You too. Bye-bye.
SPEAKER_00:I am so excited to have on the phone a best friend that is going to be on our best of Phoenix stand-up comedy showcase Saturday, November 1st at the Show Low Elk Slodge. And this is gonna be a good one because we have not one, but four amazing comedians joining us, and one of them is Sari Beliac. She's star of stage and page. She was a contributor for The Onion and her comedy album, Dead Dog Mom, released on Burn This Records, debuted at number one on iTunes in May of this year. Sorry Beliac, thanks for being on the Morning Brew!
SPEAKER_01:Wow, thank you. That was such a nice intro. I'm happy to be here.
SPEAKER_00:I can't wait for our audience to see your stand-up. It's uh it's a lot of fun. If you had to describe your stand-up as uh maybe an ice cream flavor, what flavor would your stand-up comedy be?
SPEAKER_01:Probably one with rainbow sprinkles. Something something colorful. It's it's it's a little bit silly, a little bit, it's a little bit smart, but a little bit silly and stupid. So probably like some birthday cake with rainbow sprinkles. Maybe it's just because that's my favorite.
SPEAKER_00:Heck yeah. Would give me a couple scoops of that. And if you want a couple scoops of that, you can see sorry beliac Saturday, November 1st at the Sholo Elk Slodge. Uh sorry, it is Thursday, and we do a little thing called relationship advice. Are you able to hang on a little bit and give us some relationships advice? Yeah, let's do it.
SPEAKER_01:Let's do it.
SPEAKER_00:It is now time for relationship advice with our best friend, sorry Beliac. You are married. Do you feel you're qualified to give relationship advice?
SPEAKER_01:Um, about as much as any married person is qualified to do. We're almost five years in. We're doing pretty well though.
SPEAKER_00:Heck yeah, all right. Well, here is uh the story. This girl is looking for a nickname for her boyfriend? Question mark. Here's the deal. She's 22, he's 22, and I have a guy friend. Not a relationship, but a situation ship, but kind of blurred lines. He has nicknames for me, mainly mama, and I want to find one for him too, but I stink at it. I can't do anything like my love because we're not actually together. And obviously, I don't want to scare him away. Still, I want something sweet, kinda flirty, and not way over the top. Something that says, you're special to me, without screaming, we're a couple! I've used poppy here and there, but I want an actual nickname I can use often. This one feels a little much. Any nicknames you can give me would be helpful.
SPEAKER_01:I mean, she said she tried Poppy. I mean, there's variations of of Daddy. I think that's a see how he responds to that.
SPEAKER_00:I think that's all because she's trying not to go too over the top. I feel like calling someone Poppy is a little over the top. Like she wants something friendly but flirty, like maybe buttercup or okay.
SPEAKER_01:Or something sweet.
SPEAKER_00:What? Hun.
SPEAKER_01:Sweetie, baby. I mean, I like I like baby.
SPEAKER_00:Um from a friend or like a situation ship?
SPEAKER_01:Well, what did what did she say that he calls her?
SPEAKER_00:He calls her uh mama.
SPEAKER_01:I mean, I feel like mama is I feel like they're toe in the line.
SPEAKER_00:No, that is not like you could use mama in different ways. Like, here's a friendship mama. Hey mama! Like, that felt like friendship, but here's here's taking it spicy. Hey mama.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:So it could be both. Okay, I like that. Interchangeable.
SPEAKER_01:But is it a situation ship or she's like trying to she's not sure what it is?
SPEAKER_00:She's it sounds like she wants it to be something more, and he's kind of just being a regular 22-year-old dude.
SPEAKER_01:I think she should just call him Big Daddy and see how he responds. Maybe like while he's driving, just throw it, throw it out there.
SPEAKER_00:Heck yes, Big Daddy!
SPEAKER_01:See how he responds. Big Papa. While he's on the freeway, get his get his natural response.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, good job, Big Daddy. And then see what he does. All right, and then she'll know where she stands.
SPEAKER_01:I think so. I think communication is important.
SPEAKER_00:This is sorry Beliac with our relationship advice today. I am on the phone with sorry Beliac, one of the four comedians on our best of Phoenix stand-up comedy showcase this Saturday, November 1st at 6 30 p.m. at the Show Low Elks Lodge. Well, sorry, before I let you go, I was wondering if we could do a little Halloween themed. Would you rather? Oh, yeah, let's do it. Alright, would you rather be haunted by a ghost that constantly sings show tunes or one that uh gives you passive aggressive advice?
SPEAKER_01:Oof. Um, you know, I feel like having a Jewish mother, I feel like the passive aggressive vibes, I already get that. So I think I'm gonna go with the showtune. It would be hard to concentrate, but it could be fun. It could be kind of fun and festive.
SPEAKER_00:Would you rather spend a night in a real haunted house or babysit 20 toddlers after a Halloween candy binge?
SPEAKER_01:Uh, I'm a giant baby myself, so I'm going with babysitting the toddlers. I would be terrified to go to a haunted house.
SPEAKER_00:And last question: would you rather have to wear a clown costume every day for a year or only be able to speak in a creepy whisper?
SPEAKER_01:That's a tough one. Dang. Oof. Uh man. I guess a clown costume, maybe just for comfort. You know, it sort of has the like flowy, the flowy vibes, no constricting waistbands. So I guess I'm going with the clown outfit.
SPEAKER_00:That was Would You Rather Halloween edition with Sorry Beliac, one of our four comedians on the best of Phoenix stand-up comedy showcase this Saturday night, November 1st at 6 30 p.m. at the Show Low Elks Lodge. Doors, Alaperto's food truck, and the bar open up at 5. And the last start at 6 30. Tickets are$20.
