Something Good Tuesday: Comedy Wins, Giving Machines & Sea Monkeys

Chris Bennett Episode 166

Send us a text

Today’s Talk About Something Good Tuesday on The Morning Brew with Chris Bennett & Best Friends is packed with heart, laughs, and community impact from start to finish.

We kick things off by giving away two tickets to Chris Bennett Comedy Presents Stand-Up Comedy at Rocky’s Cocktail Lounge this Saturday, December 20th. Lucky caller Cathryn wins by sharing her good news: her son in the military is being stationed closer to home — a moment that reminds us exactly why this segment exists. If you missed out, tickets are still available for $25 at ChrisBennettComedy.com.

Next, Andrea delivers another Hallmark Christmas Movie Review, this time tackling The Snow Must Go On. Spoiler alert: this one earns a firm “skip it” recommendation, saving you some valuable holiday viewing time.

We then check in with Jineane Ford from our sister stations Majik 101.7 and iTalk 106.7, joined by Vicki Solomon from Nexus Coalition for Drug Prevention. We talk about the incredible work they do locally and how you can support them through the Light the World Giving Machine in Snowflake, starting December 18th — where 100% of your donation goes directly to the charity.

Chris also shares a feel-good story about dogs riding in backpacks (yes, really), before wrapping up the show with Boo or Cool for Stupid Toy Day with Show Low’s Dave Ramsey. Pet rocks? Boo. Sea monkeys? Still cool.

Good news, giveaways, giving back, and just enough silliness — it’s a Tuesday worth sharing.

SPEAKER_00:

From the Horn Auto Center Studios, Chris Bennett and the Morning Brew. Good morning. It's the Morning Brew with Chris. You are the first caller. Who's this? Catherine Hunter. Chelsea Hunter? Catherine. Oh, Catherine! Heck yes! Thanks so much for calling in to win two tickets to our comedy show this Saturday. All you have to do is talk about something good. Give me some good news on this Talk About Something Good Tuesday.

SPEAKER_03:

Good news is my son is gone to the base he wants. I can't say where because he wants to tell his in-laws on Christmas Day. So I'm the only one that knows. Uh-oh. And I'm crying because he's only gonna be eight and a half hours away from me now.

SPEAKER_00:

Oh, that's wonderful. So uh he he's uh in the military?

SPEAKER_03:

Yes, he's Army captain.

SPEAKER_00:

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for his service. Uh make sure you let him know how appreciative we are. And thank you. I mean, it's it's gotta be uh uh it's gotta be hard and uh feel proud at the same time to have a Oh, it sure is. That is great. Well, that is some good news. You gave me goosebumps this morning, Catherine. Oh, I'm so glad. With everybody except me-in-laws. Well, awesome. Well, uh, you ready to laugh this Saturday? Oh, I sure am. Heck yeah, you ever been to one of our comedy shows? No, I haven't. Oh, dude, they are so much fun. This one's at Rocky's Cocktail Lounge located on the deuce above the days in. And uh doors are gonna open up at 5 p.m. on Saturday, and the shore uh show will start at 6.30 p.m. You can bring your own food, and Rocky's will take care of all the drinks for you. And uh, it's general mission, so come early and uh pick your favorite seat. What radio station hooked you up? Well, yours, of course. Do you know what do you know what station mine is? Uh 92.5. There we go, Catherine. Woo! If you weren't as if you weren't as lucky as Catherine, get your tickets at Chris Bennett Comedy.com. And now it's time for Chris's wife to give us her Christmas Hallmark movie reviews.

SPEAKER_04:

We're reviewing the snow must go on.

SPEAKER_00:

Ooh, the snow must go on. Here's what I think this one's about. I think it's about a ski resort that they haven't gotten any snow all season, so they've had to make snow, but then they ran out of uh uh water, and so this guy had the idea of hooking it up to uh the sewer system or septic tank, and he's like, the snow must go on, and everyone just got messy, and uh, but he falls in love and gets married and all that stuff. Is that what it's about?

SPEAKER_04:

No, that's not what it's about.

SPEAKER_00:

Oh, okay. What is the snow must go on about?

SPEAKER_04:

So it's about um this man that is, I don't know, I guess you could say a washed up Broadway star. It's been ten years since he was in his last family. And he just can't seem to get a break. And he loses his life until he decided. And he gets moved into doing the high school and it will get a little complicated when he realizes that one of his students is the daughter of a very famous Broadway producer. I really he was really unlikable to me. Like he cast himself as the lead in the high school musical.

SPEAKER_00:

You can't do that.

SPEAKER_04:

But he really wanted well and then he cast the daughter as um his understudy, but he really wanted the Broadway uh producer to see him, so that was his plan. I it was almost irredeemable for me, so I struggled with it. I'm like, this guy is a piece of crap.

SPEAKER_00:

So uh how many cups of hot cocoa on a scale of one to five do you give the snow must go on?

SPEAKER_04:

I gave it two and a half. It really wasn't terrible and it ended better, but I seriously was not liking it at the beginning.

SPEAKER_00:

All right, so if you're running short on time and can't catch all the Hallmark Christmas movies, skip the snow must go on. My love, thank you so much, and we'll talk to you tomorrow.

SPEAKER_04:

All right, bye.

SPEAKER_00:

Janine, you there?

SPEAKER_02:

Yes, I am, and I have a guest this morning, Chris. Ooh, on this talk about something good Tuesday, who's your guest? Oh, best news ever. I've got Vicki Solomon with Nexus Coalition. Hi, Vicki.

SPEAKER_05:

Well, hello. Thank you guys for having me.

SPEAKER_02:

I have Vicki and you don't. I was just kidding.

SPEAKER_00:

It's okay. Well, she's on my show right now.

SPEAKER_02:

I know I'm gonna get her over on the studio too.

SPEAKER_00:

Yes. So what uh what are you guys talking good about today?

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, Vicki, the giving machine's coming, right?

SPEAKER_05:

Yes, so excited for the giving machine in Snowflake.

SPEAKER_02:

Yes, it's gonna be at the Freeman Historic Pioneer Home, and it opens up in just two days, across two days, and uh and the Nexus Coalition is one of the beneficiaries this year.

SPEAKER_00:

That's amazing. I know Nexus Coalition uh for drug prevention does so many great things. I hear their commercials. Uh what uh what are some things we can we can buy to help them out at the giving machine?

SPEAKER_05:

You bet. So we have um ten dollar um t-shirts, we have fifteen dollar hygiene kits that goes for the youth, we have fifty dollar life-saving medicine like the naloxone or narcan, and then we've got drug education tools for a hundred dollars, we've got drug prevention courses that we teach for$150, and you know the cool thing is that 100% of the donations go towards the charity, and then with our charity, 100% goes right back to the community.

SPEAKER_02:

Every penny, Chris, every penny goes to our charities.

SPEAKER_00:

Dude, I love that. And then um, Vicki, can you uh tell my audience a little bit about uh what is Nexus Coalition? What do you uh do and who do you help?

SPEAKER_05:

You bet. You know what? We are actually here to serve our community. We work off of grants, so a hundred percent of what we do is always free. We want to give back. So we are in the schools and we're teaching. We are in the faith-based organization, getting with parents and youth. We run junior leadership academies in the summertime. We have drug prevention for teen court, um, all kinds of cool things. If there's a need in the community, we try to find out what that need is and see if we can fill that gap. Yeah, they are so awesome.

SPEAKER_00:

I love that. I love that teen court program.

SPEAKER_05:

Phenomenal. Yes, Brittany uh Kintania does a fantastic job for us over here in the Sholo area. And uh, we also look for community events to attend. We're always setting up tables in various locations throughout the county, and so we try to be as active as we possibly can.

SPEAKER_00:

That is so cool. If people want more information, uh you could go to nexuscoalition.org. Uh, find out information. You could donate directly there. But don't forget they will be at the Light the World Giving Machine, and you could donate to them starting December 17th through January 2nd. And where is the uh Light the World Giving Machine located this year, Janine?

SPEAKER_02:

It is at the Freeman Historic Home, right there, the Pioneer Home, beautifully decorated right there on Main Street in Snowflake. It's it's gorgeous. And it's and what I love is open 24 hours a day. I've seen so many people late at night just walk up by themselves and do their donations. It's it's just a it's really awesome, especially to take your children and buy whatever you can. I mean, get everything from a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a t-shirt for Nexus Coalition all the way on up to a chic, you know, for for a refugee for$200. You can buy all sorts of great things.

SPEAKER_00:

Man, it's uh that's definitely something good to talk about on this Talk About Something Good Tuesday. And uh my it feels like when you go to the giving machine, I've been doing it in Snowflake the past couple of years. You literally feel like you're in a Hallmark Christmas movie. Yes, you feel the Christmas fall there. Yep. It is Talk About Something Good Tuesday. Janine, Vicky, you guys threw the gauntlet down, shared some amazing good news about the Light the World Giving Machine and Nexus Coalition for Drug Prevention. And so uh I have uh big shoes to follow. I'm not gonna be able to follow good. I just have a frilly story, Janine. Really? It's just frilly. Yeah. Just a frill. It's just a feel-good story. Uh and it starts underground in a crowded New York City subway with a corgi and a backpack. Oh cute. There's this guy named Brian uh Risberg, and he noticed that his dog, Maxine, uh, would have a magical way of brightening up people's day, and he would put his dog in a little backpack, and he would see serious faces turn into smiles when they saw his dog, and soon Maxine uh became known online as the dog in the backpack with millions of views. So Brian quits his job and starts a dog backpack brand. And uh that's when a friend asked if he could use the same magic to help sh uh adopt shelter dogs. So now once a week, Brian picks up a shelter dog, puts an adopt me tag on it, and carries it on in his backpack and takes it around the city, riding the subway, meeting people, and starring in video and uh videos and the results, Janine. Eleven dogs featured, all adopted, and over a hundred extra adoptions at the shelter this year.

SPEAKER_02:

Aw, I love this. That is a cool story. That is a very cool story. I love your story. Oh, the only thing I did picture in my mind is the dog in the backpack in the subway, looking at all these people and being terrified. Right.

SPEAKER_03:

Poor dog, I need to adopt that quick. It's in the subway.

SPEAKER_00:

It's just I gotta get him away. Very cute. Uh, but there's a video you could check out, Janine, if you uh Google Bertha, the 65-pound sweetheart from his latest video. It's a pit bull in a backpack. Uh Bertha.

SPEAKER_02:

She was a heavyweight carry right there.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, she was a heavyweight. So you could check out that video. But that is my good news. That's a good story. On this talk about something good Tuesday. Thank you so much for Janine and Vicky. I love you, best friends. Love you guys. Love you too. Bye, Chris. Bye.

SPEAKER_02:

Bye bye.

SPEAKER_00:

I am so excited to have on the phone Sholo's own Dave Ramsey for Boo or Cool. How's your talk about something good Tuesday going this morning?

SPEAKER_01:

Oh, so so. A couple surprises this morning, but nothing that.

SPEAKER_00:

Oh, your pets just love to give you little Christmas presents this time of year. Yeah, no longer light. So, uh, Dave, today is uh Stupid Toy Day. So I'm going to uh I have a list of some uh toys I consider to be stupid. You tell me if they are boo or cool. You ready? I'm ready. All right, a pet rock. Stupid. Did you ever have one of these? I guess they did have a pet rock. How dope did you have more than one pet rock? No. No, I never had one. Couldn't you just go out into the yard and get your own? You didn't have to buy one? Or what's the deal? What made these so special?

SPEAKER_01:

They were painted up with little mustaches and beards and eyeballs and glasses, and they were pretty cool. Oh. But they were stupid.

SPEAKER_00:

So, so are uh boo or cool. First you said boo, then you said cool. What's your final ruling on the pet rocks? Boo or cool? Boo. Oh, boo. Okay. That was a tough one. Uh you ever hear of the uh potato clock? It's a science kick where you power a clock with two potatoes.

SPEAKER_01:

Never heard of it. Boo.

SPEAKER_00:

Sounds sounds stupid. It sounds like it's something cool to treat uh teach your kids about science. And you could run uh a clock off uh potatoes? I think that's pretty cool. No, he doesn't. Uh what about a Barbie pooping flamingo? It's called the Gotta Go Flamingo. The flamingo eats sand and immediately poops it back out while singing.

SPEAKER_01:

That sounds pretty hilarious. Cool.

SPEAKER_00:

Uh what about the uh tickle mielmo? That's a boo. Boo? Really? I loved uh I love the tickle mielmo. All right. Uh let's see. What about the shaving fun Ken? It's a doll that comes with the razor and shaving cream so you can shave Ken's face.

SPEAKER_01:

No, boo.

SPEAKER_00:

Boo. You know what? And the kids uh agreed it was not very popular. And last one, cha-cha-cha-chia, the chia pet. Boo or cool.

SPEAKER_01:

And many of those. That was cool.

SPEAKER_00:

That was cool. Cha cha cha chia. Well, thank you so much, Dave. That was Boo or Cool on this stupid toy day. Thank you so much for having fun with us and uh uh talk to you soon, best friend. You missed one, though. What'd I miss? The sea monkey. Oh, the sea monkeys, yeah. I never had those. Did you have sea monkeys? Yeah. Yeah, what uh are those boo or cool? They were cool. I were they real? Like they they would just come in like in a powder, and then you put them in the water, and then they just come alive?

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah. Oh, all right.

SPEAKER_00:

So sea monkeys. Like uh little like little tadpoles. Uh do you want me to get you some sea monkeys for Christmas?

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, right.

SPEAKER_00:

Uh Dave, you're the best. We love you, best friend. Have a great day. You too. All right. Bye. Bye.
