After taking New Year’s Day off, we jump back in and kick off the year in style. We start by touching base with Jineane Ford from our sister stations Majik 101.7 and iTalk 106.7, swapping stories about New Year’s festivities and recapping my experience hosting the City of Show Low’s New Year’s Eve Drop.

Then it’s Fun Fact Friday: New Year’s Resolutions Edition, where we break down what people say they’re going to do—and what actually sticks once the confetti settles.

Things take a turn when we check in with a very hungover Paul from Beaumont, Texas, who may have partied a little too hard celebrating his cousin Jessie’s birthday. He shares his New Year’s Eve adventures, including attending the Kill Tony New Year’s Eve event, before we wrap things up with Are You Smarter Than a Redneck? Cat Trivia Edition in honor of Happy Mew Year for Cats Day.

It’s laughs, lessons, and a little chaos—just the right way to start the year.

Quiet New Year Moments

SPEAKER_01

From the Horn Auto Center Studios, Chris Bennett and the morning brew. Janine, you there? I am, I am. How are you, Mr. New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_00

Happy New Year. I'm doing awesome. What did you uh end up doing on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. I kind of followed those memes that said, I don't know what I'm gonna wear to the living room, but I may not even show up, you know. No, we we had a little celebration at home, very quiet, but we set off a bunch of fireworks with the grand grandkids, and we kind of uh did, you know, paid homage with to the to our Christmas tree, and we burned burned the Christmas tree. It was standing up out in the burn. It it had to go early because oh my gosh, it was just crisp. And so we burned that, looked like a giant Roman candle, and it was uh very safe and all that kind of stuff. But it's still that was what we how we celebrated New Year's Eve at our house. It was very quiet. Yeah, it was awesome.

Show Low Celebration And The Suit

SPEAKER_00

Cool, cool. I was here in Sholo for New Year's Eve.

SPEAKER_01

You know, and oh my gosh, Chris, your outfit. Oh, everybody has to go online and look at your your your suit. That was unreal.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, on uh Facebook, City of Sholo, they have uh from New Year's Eve, they have the whole Facebook Live of all the uh uh the dropping of the Deuce of Clubs card, and you could see my awesome suit that my wife helped design.

SPEAKER_01

Can't even hardly describe it. Andrea did such a beautiful job blinging that all out with all the cards and the oh my gosh, what a perfect suit.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I got the suit from Timu. Since it since we are show low and we dropped the Deuce of Clubs card at midnight, I thought I needed some type of suit uh that paid homage to that, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. And you also, you also are very, you're you're spelt. You look good. You look very good. But you were you were a little little puffy. I can see you had lots of layers because it was cold, am I right?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes, yes, I was very puffy. I think I had three layers of clothes underneath my suit. And so I looked a little bulked up, uh, but uh I did not get cold.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, and and you looked fabulous. Oh my gosh. Yeah, kudos to Andrea. Good work.

Crowd, Travel, And Mayor Shoutouts

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely, yeah. It was a lot of fun. Big shout out to uh the city of Sholo and everyone that came out. It was a lot of people, uh, obviously from here on the mountain, but a lot of people from Queen Creek, Casa Grand, uh Phoenix, Tucson.

SPEAKER_01

So and the mayor was awesome too, mayor. That was so fun.

Fun Fact Friday: Resolutions By The Numbers

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was great. So super cool. If you want to check out uh what you missed, check out the City of Sholo's Facebook page for the Facebook Live from New Year's Eve. All right, Janine, it's time for Fun Fact Friday. And with it being the second day of the new year, I thought we would do some fun facts on New Year's resolutions. Ooh, that's a good one. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Appropriate.

SPEAKER_00

Uh what percentage of people do you think uh actually make New Year's resolutions? What's your guess?

SPEAKER_01

Uh, I'm gonna guess uh 45%.

SPEAKER_00

Holy moly! That you're close. Uh but 40%. Oh, wow. Only 40% of people actually make New Year's resolutions. Most people skip them. Like when I was asking people for their resolutions at the City of Sholos event, most of them didn't have one. Or you know what was so nice? A lot of people was just be nicer and kinder. That was one of the coolest resolutions. Yeah. Uh, what do you think the number one New Year's resolution is every year?

SPEAKER_01

Has to be getting healthy, getting in shape.

SPEAKER_00

That's right. Yeah, exercising more. Yeah, and gym attendance usually spikes this month and then drops dramatically in February because when do you think most resolutions are abandoned by?

SPEAKER_01

Uh uh January 15th. You are yeah, John.

SPEAKER_00

January 12th. Like, how are you so good at this?

SPEAKER_01

You're like, well, I've been reading some New Year's Eve things, but I can't remember the exact percentages. But yeah, and but yeah, I think a lot of people they and they make them too big and lofty, just make little ones and kind of tackle those little goals, you know, maybe.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Yeah. A lot of people say you need to be specific. The more specific you are, the more likely you're to keep your resolutions. And if you share it with friends.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. Tell everybody. Check on me, yeah.

Make Goals Smaller And Specific

SPEAKER_00

Tell everyone. One of the fastest growing resolutions is saving money. That's a big one. Big one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And uh last one, out of let's say on a scale of um one to four people, how many do you think forget the resolution was by February?

SPEAKER_01

Just forget it? Yeah, just completely forget. Maybe one out of four. I'm hoping people aren't forgetting everything.

SPEAKER_00

Janine, you are amazing. You nailed every one of these fun facts.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, just just because I've tried this so many times every year, New Year's at resolutions. But yeah. Right. You have to be be easy on yourself. A lot of people fail at, but try. Keep trying.

SPEAKER_00

Trying, yeah. Well, the most, they say the most successful resolution, just be a little better than last year.

SPEAKER_01

I think that's doable. A little more kind, a little more. Yes, yes, understanding, patient.

SPEAKER_00

Those are my goals. We'll sweep. Well, we love you, best friend, and uh, we'll uh talk to you on Monday.

SPEAKER_01

Awesome. Have a great weekend, Chris. You too. Bye.

Cat Trivia With A Hungover Friend

SPEAKER_00

Bye-bye. Woo!

SPEAKER_02

SPEAKER_00

Your cousin Jesse. Oh, that's right. Yeah, you uh called me a few times. I got to talk to the whole crew. You guys had an amazing uh New Year's Eve. You went to Austin for your cousin's uh birthday, and what did you do on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, we went to the Jill Tony show.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's the number one podcast, at least the number one live podcast in the world, if not the number one podcast in the world. And basically they have a uh a dais of funny comedians up there, and then you put your name in the bucket, they draw a name, you get one minute uninterrupted, and then they interview you after you're set or make fun of you for not being funny. Who were some of the uh comedians that were on the dais or uh performed?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, they it was they had Rose Barr, they had Fluffy, they had uh Rob Schneider, I had Carrie Todd. Who else? Joe Rogan. Of course, he came out and gave an award. Nice. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

And so did did you put your name or Rhonda put her name in the bucket?

SPEAKER_02

No, no, you had to be like downtown on 6th Street to do that, and this was Yeah, no, we didn't know we didn't know where to do it. Yeah, I would have, but didn't know where to do it at. I'm glad I did it because many people get totally booze.

SPEAKER_00

Really? There's that would I mean doing an open mic is nerve-wracking enough. Like doing an open mic in front of 15,000 people has to be on a Netflix on a Netflix special. Yeah, yeah. And so there were some people that just totally ate it.

SPEAKER_02

Oh god, yes. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I'll have to keep an eye out. It's coming out on Netflix, you said?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, it's supposed to be coming out on Netflix. What when that January?

SPEAKER_01

January the 12th.

SPEAKER_02

Like January 12th?

SPEAKER_00

Okay, awesome. We'll keep an eye out and see if we can spot Paul in the audience. It is now time for Are You Smarter Than a Hungover Redneck? Uh today, Paul is happy. Today is happy meow year for cats, and you are a proud cat lover. So I thought we would do some cat trivia. You ready?

SPEAKER_02

Let's go.

SPEAKER_00

All right. What is the scientific name of the domestic cat? Is it Canis Lupus familiar? Is it Felice Cactus? C, Panthera Leo, or D Felice Silvestris? Paul Paul. C is it C, it is not C. I am gonna say B, Felice Cactus. It is B, Felice Cactus. Here we go. Next question. How many toes does a typical cat have in total? Is it 16, 18, 20, or 22? Chris, I'm gonna say 18 B. No, it is not 18. What's your guess, Paul? Maybe we're there again. I already forgot. A 16, uh, C20 or D22? 22. No, it's 20. All right. This last question, Paul. If you don't get it right, it's over. If you get it right, we go into sudden death. Here we go. How long do cats usually sleep per day? Is it A, six to eight hours, B, eight to ten hours, C, 10 to 12 hours, or D 12 to 16 hours? Chris. Oh. I'm gonna say D 12 to 16 hours. It is 12 to 16 hours. Meow, meow, meow. Meow. I just had a fancy feast and uh kicked your butt, buddy. I hope you feel better and uh uh rest up and we'll talk to you on Monday.

SPEAKER_02

All right, buddy. Y'all have a great week.

SPEAKER_00

All right, happy new year. Bye. Bye bye.
